Listen to the Engadget Mobile Podcast, live at 5:15PM ET!
We've recovered from the grueling week of CES sort of. As you probably already know, technology doesn't seem to take time off after the big show, and neither do we. Plenty of news has been making the rounds since our star-studded vidcast last week (and by star-studded, we mean Sean Cooper and some nifty handsets, at the same time), so Myriam Joire and Brad Molen are taking to the mics to discuss it, rant about it and -- in some rare cases -- praise it. So tune in live to join in the online chat and listen to some grade-A mobile talk. January 20, 2012 5:15 PM EST

M1 begins offering camera-free iPhone 4, 4S
M1, a cellphone operator in Singapore, is now offering a selection of iPhone 4 and 4S handsets that have had both of their cameras removed. This process was necessary in order for army personnel to keep the phones while on base. The modification voids Apple's original warranty, though one from a third party is offered for S$321 (about $252). It will reportedly have similar warranty terms and coverage to Apple.

Review: Adonit Writer 2 Plus for iPad 2
Most iPad keyboard cases are either leather or faux leather folios, usually with a somewhat ill-fitting frame that holds the tablet on the right while a rubber or plastic keyboard sits on the opposite side. The original Writer was different that it has a hard plastic frame to hold the iPad, a nice but obviously plastic fabric covering the outside, and a scissor action keyboard inside with comparatively great tactile feedback. Because the keyboard…

Apple cleared on one of seven Samsung patents in Germany
A German judge presiding over one of Samsung's seven patent infringement cases against Apple ruled in favor of the Cupertino company. The patent infringement case involves one of several 3G/UMTS patents held by the Korean manufacturer. The ruling did not give the reason why the judge rejected Samsung's argument. According to FOSS Patents, the judge either believes Apple did not infringe on the patent or that Samsung exhausted its patent right and Apple, by default, has a license. The reason behind this decision could affect the outcome of Samsung's remaining claims. If Samsung has exhausted its rights to this patent, it could also see its other 3G/UMTS-ba

Luxa2 showed off a handful of its iPhone 4/4S cases at the 2012 International CES, and of the bunch, Carbon Camber ($53) and Lille ($25) both stuck out. Daily iPhone App: Async Corp
Async Corp. is about as charming as a puzzle game gets. There are a few flaws with it (most notably that the game does a terrible job of actually telling you how to play, but I'll fix that in a second), but it's just so cute and so charmingly devised that it's hard to put down. The idea is that you've got two grids of colored blocks next to each other, and it's your job (in an almost literal sense, as the game's premise casts you as a worker at a fictional corporation) to "pass packets" back and forth by touching one grid and then the other. The trick is that you can only pass packets when they combine up into a rectangular box of four or more, at which point they create cute little boxes with faces on them, which can then be tapped away for poin

Amazon Kindle Fire orders reportedly cut in half to 3m
Amazon's hot sales of the Kindle Fire during the holidays may not have been sustainable if industry rumors are accurate. Part suppliers claimed to Digitimes Friday that, after shipping six million of the Android tablets in the fall, orders were now down to three million for the winter. The drop was "in line" with anticipation of a post-holiday drop, the insiders claimed, although such a decline would still be steep.

Public evidence shows Apple, Adobe had no-poaching pact
Newly publicized evidence in the wake of an agreement to stop no-poaching deals among Silicon Valley technology companies has shown that several firms did ultimately have deals but stopped short of colluding on a larger level. Although short on details of the supposed Apple-Google agreement, an e-mail message from Adobe Senior VP of human resources Theresa Townsley confirmed that Adobe and Apple had an informal rule against hiring each other's staff. At least in 2005, Adobe chief Bruce Chizen and Apple's Steve Jobs had blocked attempts to get each other's staff.

Apple Stores coming to India, government official hints
Apple could open retail stores in India following a change in local ownership rules, says a senior official with the country's Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion. Apple has been in talks with the department for "some time," according to local business publication Mint, and is allegedly eager to retry the Indian market after having failed to make headway in 2006. Under previous rules, single-brand retailers like Apple would have had to have had at least a 49 percent domestic investment; now they can claim full ownership.

Friday Favorite: After the Deadline
I spend a lot of time in the web browser, so much that I use web apps more than their standalone counterparts. I use twitter.com to compose a tweet, gmail.com to check my email and so on. As a result, I use several plug-ins and extensions to improve the efficiency of my online work. In a previous Friday Favorite, I covered Lazarus, a form recovery tool. Today, I'm going to tell you about After The Deadline, an extension for Firefox or Chrome that'll spell and grammar check your writing.
After the Deadline works with most text fields in a web browser. It appears as a small ABC icon in the bottom right corner of a text box. When you're done typing

Twitter buys Summify, helps you automatically turn off the noise
Summify is a beloved little news-curation platform that works out (based on your reading habits and those of your friends) what news is most relevant to you. Yesterday the Vancouver-based start-up announced that it had been snapped up by Twitter and will commence shutting down in the next week. Fortunately, the team is relocating down to the micro-blogging site's San Francisco base, ostensibly to bake the service into forthcoming variations of the site -- which might be enough to stop us complaining about losing our retweets panel. Hopefully this means that we can dial out all the noise about Lindsay Lohan without having to ask

Nachbau des Erstehilfekastens aus Halo ist ein Erstehilfekasten
Filed under: Haushaltstechnik

German court shoots down Samsung's 3G patent lawsuit against Apple
Germany's Mannheim Regional Court has just issued a decision on one front of the ongoing dispute between Apple and Samsung, ruling against one of the Korean manufacturer's several patent infringement claims. At issue is a Samsung patent pertaining to the 3G / UMTS standard -- one of seven that Apple has been accused of infringing. Today, Judge Andreas Voss rejected Samsung's claim, though the reasoning behind this decision remains somewhat murky. According to

Canadian customers get lumps of clay instead of iPads
Vancouver, B.C. resident Mark Sandhu bought a new iPad 2 for his wife for Christmas, but when she opened the box, she found a tablet of another kind: a big chunk of clay. Sandhu took his purchase back to Canadian retailer Future Shop and complained, but the store initially thought he was trying to run a scam on them.
It's only after Sandhu contacted CTV, and after more cases of "clayPads" started showing up in Vancouver-area Future Shops and Best Buys, that Sandhu finally got compensation in the form of a full refund and a replacement iPad 2.
This isn't the first time we've heard of a scam like this, unfortunately. Cases involving bricks or other items inserted into iPod boxes and then ret

ZTE pays Microsoft around $27 for each Windows Phone made
How much does it cost to license Microsoft's latest and greatest mobile OS? A fair bit it seems. Pegged at $27 per ZTE smartphone, TrustedReviews managed to get those licensing beans spilled at the glitzy London launch of the company's first Windows Phone ZTE Tania. The fee flies in the face of open-source Android, which requires no price to install on handsets. Microsoft, however, is still keeping an eye on its Google rival, collecting pat

iBooks Author: Under the hood
I spent a good bit of time this morning taking a peek under the hood at iBooks Author and the files it builds. By request, here is a quick summary of some of the information I gathered on the topic. I warn you that this is going to be a non-generalist post, so do feel free to skip ahead on the site if this kind of info isn't really your thing.
The iBooks format appears to be an EPUB-like variant specific to Apple. Like EPUB, it's a zipped up file that contains an archive of the materials that make up the book. Inside, you find an Open Packaging folder and a META-INF Open Container Format folder, with its container.xml file. Unlike EPUB with its application/xhtml+xml mimetype, .ibooks uses application/x-ibooks+zip.

Editorial: Don't call it an ultrabook
Every year at CES, the tech-watching masses engage in a bit of trendspotting -- an attempt to identify the one or two big themes of the show that may or may not come to define the year in technology. Some years those are easy to spot (tablets and 3D TV were two big ones recently), and other times they involve a bit of guesswork. This year, one of the most oft-cited trends is the "ultrabook." Judging from the companies' announcements at the show and some of the coverage they've received, you might think that's a new sort of device or a radically new type of laptop. But, really, they're just laptops. Small, thin laptops -- but laptops. It's actually Ultrabook, with a capital "U," and a (TM). The n
