Apple files for patents on avatars, ink-based handshakes

A series of new patent applications shows Apple interest in avatars, as well as unusual digital handshakes, reports say. In the latter concept, invisible inks and optical coatings would be integrated into a part of a device such as a glass bezel or an Apple logo. Properly-equipped cameras in another device could then detect the special material, interpreting it as a key for use in sharing data, establishing secure connections, or even identification at retailers. Mozilla ponders ending Firefox support for Leopard

"iPhone" was the top search term on Yahoo during 2011, the company has announced. Most of the top 10 list consists of celebrities, the second- and third-place spots in fact belonging to Casey Anthony and Kim Kardashian. Yahoo remarks that a piece of electronics hasn't dominated the list since 2002, when Sony's PlayStation 2 occupied the top spot. Exactly one day after the terms of Apple's rental deal for its new Grand Central Terminal retail store became public, New York State investigators are looking into whether the Metropolitan Transit Authority gave "overly generous terms" to Apple for the space. Mophie, Best Buy recalls overheating cases

A couple of recall notices went out earlier today for Mophie and Rocketfish battery cases. Mophie is recalling the Juice Pack Air for the fourth-generation iPod touch. Affected models will have the first five digits of the serial number be between TR113 and TR120. Mophie said a small number of those units might overheat, causing the plastic to deform and damage the iPod touch. BBC iPlayer reaches Canada, still missing in US

The BBC has expanded its Global iPlayer service for the iPad to Canada, says The Hollywood Reporter. Users can access BBC TV shows on demand, something normally reserved for UK license fee payers, who can tap various forms of iPlayer for free. The iPhone 4S has been out for about six weeks, and owners have had time to learn the ins and outs of the device. ChangeWave wanted to find out what these people thought and asked 215 iPhone 4S owners about their new handset. If you're a long-time iPhone owner, you won't be surprised by the results. The survey reveals an overwhelming number (77 percent) of 4S owners are very satisfied with their handset. This is slightly higher than the 73 percent who said they were very satisfied with the iPhone 4 right after launch. The feature 4S owners liked the most about their handset was Siri. Almost half (49 percent) of those surveyed ranked Siri as the number one feature of the phone.

The South African branch of Vodacom is launching the iPhone 4S on December 16th, a Twitter post confirms. Clearwire avoids default, gets debt, LTE funding from Sprint

Clearwire got a last-minute reprieve Thursday after Sprint confirmed a rumored last-minute financing deal. The 4G service is getting both debt assistance to pay off its $237 million owed on Thursday as well as up to $350 million to help Clearwire transition over to LTE. Under the new terms, most of the payments will come during 2012, although Sprint now also has to guarantee use of Clearwire's outgoing WiMAX network through 2015 or later.

JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz has raised his estimates of iPhone shipments for the December quarter from 25.3 million units to 28 million. Zweiter Vorfall in einer Woche: iPhone geht in Flammen auf

Binnen weniger Tage kam es zum zweiten beunruhigenden Vorfall mit einem neuem Smartphone von Apple. Nachdem ein erstes Derivat im Flugzeug plötzlich in Funken und Rauch aufging, entzündete sich ein weiteres Gerät über Nacht in einem Wohnhaus. Zu Schaden kam in beiden Fällen zum Glück niemand.

UBS: Apple now the major client for Gorilla Glass

Weaker than forecast non-iPad tablet demand, along with the completion of orders for the holiday season iPad buildup, have pushed Corning to lower its guidance for CY4Q, now down 25 percent from the previous quarter, reports UBS analyst Maynard Um in a note to investors. He estimates that Apple bought around 80 percent of the glass company's Gorilla Glass output through early December, making the company the major client for Corning and a leading indicator of iPad demand.

Carrier IQ references found in iOS 5, probably benign

The Interwebs have been abuzz over the last 24 hours about Carrier IQ on Android smart phones, allegedly logging user activity including keystrokes. TUAW can confirm that Carrier IQ appears to be included on iOS 5, but that its purpose is most likely benign. iOS virtuoso chpwn discovered Carrier IQ support in firmware as recent as iOS 3.x on Apple's devices. TUAW confirmed Carrier IQ references in iOS 5 after reading this post on the MacRumors forum and evaluating the /usr/bin/awd_ic3 file found in the installed OS.

Activision releasing Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies December 1

Activision's been relatively quiet on iOS, especially when compared to other big game publishers like EA. But the company has always had a hit with its original Call of Duty Zombies app, and now it's looking to replicate that success with a new version, based on the Zombies Mode in last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops. Carrier IQ traces seen on iPhone, may be much less intrusive

The circumstances surrounding Carrier IQ's device tracking code spread partly to Apple on Wednesday night after jailbreaker Grant Paul found references to it in iOS. In iOS (iPhone OS) 3.1.3, users can find both an IQAgent log and references to collector.sky.carrieriq.com, presumably a server that takes logs from the phones. It still exists as of iOS 5, although the collector site address been moved to within the /usr/bin/awd_ice# series of files rather than an IQAgent.

Foursquare lets users save web locations to mobile

Foursquare has announced that its services have been expanded to allow users to save locations that are posted on many websites. A "save to Foursquare" button has been added to participating websites, providing a way to bookmark the map location for future reference without leaving the browser. Saved locations are then automatically added to the Foursquare To-Do List.

Acer sees $499 ultrabooks by 2013 as Gigabyte, MSI bow out

Acer President Jim Wong has continued a string of comments on mobile late Wednesday with remarks expecting steep price drops in ultrabooks. Although they were sitting at $1,000 at the end of the year, the notebooks could get to between $799 and $899 by spring next year, he said with Digitimes in attendance. When eHarmony first brought its iPad app to us a couple of months ago, I had the great idea (I thought) to put together a feature for TUAW around the idea of only the iPad app to access the very popular Internet dating service, find a date, and then review both the app and the date itself. So eHarmony kindly provided me with a couple months of membership, and I set to work using the iPad app to craft my profile, find some nice women to date in Los Angeles, and eventually go out with one of them. We've heard some really good music come out of an iPad before, but to me it's all basically sounded like yeah, it came from a tablet. This remix of Jason Derulo's "It Girl," however, which you can watch below, sounds like the real thing to me. Acer's 27-inch HR274H monitor promises to do 2D-to-3D conversion on the fly

It likely won't win over anyone who isn't too fond of 3D to begin with, but those looking for some additional quasi-3D content beyond the standard fare now have a new option to consider in the form of Acer's 27-inch HT274H monitor. It not only includes a set of passive, polarized 3D glasses, but what Acer describes as its own "chip-based solution" that promises to convert all 2D content to 3D in real time (it can be switched on and off on the monitor itself). Hungary issues Steve Jobs memorial stamps

Magyar Posta, the postal service of Hungary, has issued a numbered commemorative sheet honoring Apple co-founder Steve Jobs that incorporates a stamp-sized image in memory of Jobs, who died in October.
