Today at Apple's online store save on refurbished iPads, iPods and iMacs. A wide selection of refurb. iPads are now available starting at $399 for the 16GB first generation iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G. Verizon appeals net neutrality rules, let the legal wrangling begin
We told you it was only a matter of time and, honestly, it took a bit longer than expected. Verizon has officially filed an appeal to the FCC's net neutrality rules, which are set to take effect on Novemeber 20th. It wasn't until the regulations were published in the Federal Register on September 23rd that they became fair game for legal challenges -- a technicality that resulted in Verizon's previous attempt to block the rules

Facebook may have snubbed HP's TouchPad to court Apple
Facebook may have short-changed the HP TouchPad's Facebook app to patch up relations with Apple. An exposé on Friday alleged that Apple's then-CEO Steve Jobs was "livid" when he learned of the webOS app's full extent and wanted it gone, considering it a betrayal of a promise the iPad would get first crack at a tablet app. According to Mashable, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg agreed to pull the app, but when opposed by HP's mobile head Jon Rubinstein simply pulled access to Facebook programming interfaces, rendering the app mostly ineffective.

Apple axes iPod click wheel games in iTunes, is the 'classic' model next?

Pre-event AAPL trading bucks trend
Andy Zaty of the Bullish Cross blog has done some interesting analysis on the AAPL stock price around Apple's keynote events, and he found that for next week's event, the pattern seems to have fallen apart. iPhone 5 Assistant corroborated, mocked up in video
The iPhone 5's Siri-based Assistant feature has been supported by separate, follow-up tips. Going so far as to contract out a concept video (below), MacRumors understands that the advanced voice command system can be invoked from nearly anywhere by a long press of the home button. News: Unions, supporters plan iWon’t campaign against Verizon iPhone 5
Several unions and lobbying groups plan to use the iPhone 5 launch to publicize a union contract dispute with Verizon Wireless. AT&T tries to dismiss Sprint, Cellular South lawsuits
AT&T on Friday motioned to dismiss the lawsuits of both Sprint and Cellular South attempting to block its merger with T-Mobile. The carrier giant cited lack of standing, or that it wasn't a valid plaintiff, for claimed bias. As a carrier, it couldn't claim to "wrap itself in the cloak" of the public's interest since it had a clear competitive incentive to block the deal, AT&T said.

Amazon Kindle first based on BlackBerry, shifts to iPad
Amazon first based the design of the Kindle on the BlackBerry, an early designer divulged Friday. The angular design and scroll wheel were reported by the NY Times as inspired by CEO Jeff Bezos' own BlackBerry at the time, likely an 8700. Dragon Go! for iOS gets support for Netflix, Spotify, others
Nuance has released a major update of Dragon Go!, its voice-driven search utility for iOS. After opening the software a person can use voice to quickly navigate through a range of curated services, such as Fandango and AccuWeather. Clearly, this one's geared at schools, businesses and IT professionals, and it's a wonder there aren't more of these on the market. Monitoring, syncing and charging 10 iPads (or more) is a time-consuming hassle.
The MultiDock comes with some nifty features, including LEDs to indicate the charging status of each iPad and auto-off charging, which automatically stops sending power to a device once it's charged.

EA Sports has released a mobile version of its popular soccer game, FIFA 12, for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. HTC Flyer drops to $300 at Best Buy in sign of shakeout
The struggle for non-iPad tablets continued on Friday after Best Buy said it would permanently drop the price of the HTC Flyer down to $300. The cut is a steep $200 drop from its original price and will be permanent. Both online and retail stores should see the cut take effect October 1.

AT&T confirms iPhone insurance hike on October 4th
Insurance costs will indeed be going up for AT&T iPhone owners on October 4th, as rumored, a page on the carrier's website reveals. On that date insurance rates are scheduled to jump from $5 to $7, affecting new and existing customers alike. The hike is happening in conjunction with the creation of a new device tier, covering the iPhone and "other devices" for which a $199 non-refundable deductible will apply.

In very tight timing, Apple on Friday posted iTunes 10.5 beta 9 to its developer center. The update is the first since an iTunes Match reset and appears primarily focused on checking the environment. No matching iOS or Lion updates have arrived at the same time.

Using the iPhone and iPad cameras to capture external guitar oscillations
Remember the video of guitar strings oscillating, caught by an iPhone sitting inside a guitar? Turns out you can capture this outside a guitar if you just apply a ton of lights. It makes sense, as you're monkeying with the rolling shutter, which can then capture the oscillations of the guitar strings as they are plucked.
It's great fun to watch, and tipster Mike Salovich tells us he wound up using 2600 watts of industrial light to capture this effect. He also points out how important camera orientation is, as it will maximize the rolling shutter effect. Check out the video to see what he's talking about.

ZTE N860 heading to Sprint, granted FCC and BlueTooth SIG approval
It's not often that a phone swings through the FCC with its carrier branding already in place, but here is the ZTE N860 with a nice big Sprint logo emblazoned across its regulatory label. Interestingly, it doesn't appear that the N860 (which we hope picks up a catchier name on its way to market) packs a WiMAX radio. Instead this Android smartphone only has test entries for its EVDO connection, but we wouldn't rule out a 4G hiding in some of the unreleased documents. Samsung reportedly offers Apple deal to end dispute
The Wall Street Journal claims Samsung has offered a deal to Apple that would let the tablet maker sell its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia. Terms of the deal were not released, but it supposedly will "comfort" Apple. Other details suggest it won't stop the litigation, but will temporarily avoid an injunction. The isn't exactly what Samsung wanted, but it will get the Galaxy Tab on retail shelves during the holiday shopping season.

Man kann ja kaum noch einen Eierbecher ohne iPhone-Dock kaufen, aber Griffin hat wirklich die Krone verdient für ihre Multidock, das 10 iPhones oder iPads gleichzeitig laden und synchronisieren kann, und mit zwei weiteren Multidocks gekoppelt sogar 30. Ausnahmsweise ist das mal kein Consumer-Produkt, sondern natürlich für Sysads in Firmen gedacht, in denen iPads oder iPhones aus irgendeinem Grund zur bestehenden Infrastruktur gehören. Die Dinger kosten in den USA stolze 700 Dollar.

iTunes 10.5 beta 9 now available to developers
Apple has released a ninth beta build of iTunes 10.5 to developers. The interesting thing about this build is that it includes iTunes Match, which could be an indication that development on the next version of iTunes is nearing completion.
This is the second time that a beta build of iTunes 10.5 has been released separately from the routine updates to the builds of iOS 5, which has been at beta 7 since August 31st.

RIM had an large internal rift over how it would pitch the BlackBerry PlayBook, executives slipped out on Friday. Apple removes click-wheel iPod games from iTunes
Coinciding with what we've heard about Apple making a product transition in the iPod line -- namely that the iPod classic and shuffle are to be discontinued, -- AppleInsider has pointed out that click-wheel iPod games are no longer available from the iTunes store. Previously, by clicking on the App Store menu in iTunes, there was an iPod Click Wheel Games option which has now been removed.

Apple TV seen reaching seven more European nations on Tues.
Apple will finally bring the Apple TV to seven more European countries on Tuesday, a MacRumors report says. The company has allegedly informed resellers of the plan, which should specifically see the set-top come to Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. Reminder: AT&T data throttling begins Oct. 1
Just a reminder that starting Saturday, AT&T will begin throttling customers who use excessive data on their unlimited plans. Customers identified as bandwidth hogs will have their speeds reduced for the remainder of their billing cycle. Once a new cycle starts, full service will be restored.
AT&T says these changes should affect only 5 percent of its customers. It will send out notices and give customers a grace period before it throttles an account. AT&T is not the only carrier with a throttle policy. Both

Elon Musk's space ferries will one day require nothing so prosaic as parachutes to soften their landings. Instead, SpaceX's latest 'Dragon' design will rely totally on rocket boosters for the final leg of its descent. Kodak rolls out Playfull Waterproof rugged pocket video cam
Kodak picked Friday to show a different take on its pocket camcorders. The Playfull Waterproof is a cousin to the original Playfull that trades some performance for hardening against conditions. Although it drops from 1080p down to 720p, it can survive underwater depths of up to 10 feet for two hours, or enough to fill much of the sometimes bundled 4GB SDHC card.

Patent-Unsinn: LG versucht BMW und Audi in Korea zu stoppen, Schuld ist Osram

Als Frage formuliert wären wir nicht darauf gekommen. Aber es scheint so als wäre LG wirklich ernsthaft damit beschäftigt Apple im Patentwahn der letzten Monate den Rang abzulaufen. Sie versuchen nämlich in Korea (Süd, logischerweise) den Verkauf von Audis und BMWs zu verbieten, da die mit Osram LEDs arbeiten, deren LED-Patente in Korea von LG angefochten werden. Skurril? Wir glauben das ist erst der Anfang einer in den kommenden Jahren immer größer werdenden Patentkonsumwahnwelle.

AT&T is set to begin throttling the speed of the top five percent of heaviest data users beginning Saturday, October 1st. Even users with grandfathered "unlimted" data plans will experience reduced speeds once their usage puts them in the top five percent, but the throttling will end at the end of the billing cycle until the user once again uses too much data, said the company. In case you weren't watching, Intel's Elements 2011 Keynote slipped in a sly acquisition announcement: the firm recently signed a deal to absorb Telmap, an Israel-based outfit whose location platform is the backbone of countless navigation apps. Intel's Peter Biddle says the navigation firm is to become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel, and will help AppUp developers pack their apps with unique location capabilities via Telmap's standardized APIs. Study finds strong link between travel, iPad use
Mobile advertising network Greystripe surveyed iPad and smartphone users this summer about their travel habits and how their mobile devices help them with travelling -- either through setting up travel bookings for transportation and hotels or as a GPS unit or method to pass the time while in transit. The results show a strong link between travel activities and iPad usage, with 93 percent of users engaging with their devices while travelling, and 91 percent using it for a travel-related activity.

Microsoft may make $444m on Android licenses, HTC is 30% WP7
Microsoft could be making nearly half a billion in license deals like that with Samsung for its claimed Android-related patents. Goldman Sachs analysts estimated that, at between $3 to $6 for each device, Microsoft's combined deals could lead to it making $444 million in its fiscal 2012 year, which ends next June. The deals range from majors like HTC and Samsung through to more niche firms like Onkyo and Velocity Micro.

Double Fine releases Psychonauts app
The great game developer Double Fine has released an app for the App Store, and it's related to their very popular game Psychonauts (which recently arrived on the Mac App Store itself), but it's not, unfortunately, a port of the game. The Psychonauts Vault Viewer is instead sort of an ancillary add-on to the title, a compendium of all of the game's "memory vault" animations, along with new commentary from the game's creators Scott Campbell and Tim Schafer. Griffin debuts MultiDock iDevice charging station
Accessory maker Griffin Technology has announced a rolling cart-style, scaleable power, syncing and storage solution for multiple iOS devices called the MultiDock. Based on a steel enclosure with a footprint smaller than a laptop, the unit delivers charging ability in each of its 10 charging bays and features a single USB port at the base to connect the entire stand to a computer for syncing. HP gives Meg Whitman Jobs-like $1 salary, Apotheker $13m
HP in an SEC filing late Thursday outlined the payments for incoming CEO Meg Whitman and recently fired CEO Leo Apotheker. Hoping to tie Whitman's pay to performance, the company is emulating former chief Steve Jobs' model and paying her a base $1 per year. While she will get a company-standard $2.4 million bonus every year, her real pay will depend on how much HP's share value has grown over time.

iPhone 4S appears in Apple's inventory
We really don't know for sure what kind of new iPhone Apple will announce next week, but here's another vote for a revision of the iPhone 4 rather than an all-new iPhone 5. 9to5Mac is reporting that the iPhone 4S has popped up as an entry in Apple's own inventory systems, which seems (if true) like a pretty good indication that Apple will indeed offer a tweaked version of the current iPhone 4.

India caps text messages to curb telemarketing, Desi teens plot mutiny

LG intros IPS5-series monitors with IPS panels
LG has announced a new monitor series, labeled IPS5, that is built using in-plane switching (IPS) panels. The technology, which is utilized by smaller products such as the iPad and iPhone, offers a much wider viewing angle when compared to standard LCDs. Psystar loses appeal in battle with Apple, told to ditch Mac clones for-ev-ver
We're sure Psystar, its lawyers and its tens of fans, didn't really expect to win the appeal it filed following the permanent injunction handed down against its commercial hackintoshes, but you can't blame the company for trying. Game creator Double Fine has ported its popular action / adventure platform game Psychonauts to the Mac, making it available via Steam or the Mac App Store. The updated version features cloud saving, a slightly easier "Meat Circus," and -- for the first time -- achievements. To celebrate, the company has released a free promotional iOS app called Psychonauts Vault Viewer that takes users through a collection of character artwork -- the "Memory Vaults" from the original game.

iOS game revenue survey: 50% of App Store games make less than $3k
