Spotify users get a 'private listening' mode, Facebook account still required
It may not be addressing complaints from those bemoaning the need for a Facebook account in the first place, but Spotify is now at least giving folks an easy way to listen to what they like without broadcasting it to their friends. That comes in the form of a new "private listening" mode, which can easily be turned on and off at will -- the other option is to unlink your Facebook account completely. Case-Mate iPhone 5 cases slip into AT&T invetory
Case-Mate's early iPhone 5 cases have surfaced again, this time in a leak from AT&T's inventory system. A screen snapshot showed BGR three adaptations of existing cases, the Barely There, Pop! Case, and Tough Case, all listed for the "iPhone 5." The trio wasn't in stock and didn't have a ship date.

Apple awarded key win over Psystar
It's been a long time since we've heard anything from Psystar, the company responsible for making unauthorized Mac clones in 2008. Apple sued the company into the bedrock due to it selling PC hardware with OS X pre-installed, a violation of Apple's OS X licensing agreement. Psystar has made numerous appeals against the permanent injunction slapped on them, with their latest appeal being filed over a year ago.

Seven-inch Huawei tablet headed to T-Mobile, priced at $200 on contract?
It looks like T-Mobile is getting a seven-inch stablemate for the incoming Galaxy Tab 10.1. According to these shots from TmoNews, Huawei's dual-core MediaPad will arrive in magenta clothing, though branding is limited to a few apps and an additional press shot, included after the break. Aside from a 1280 x 800 IPS display and 4G goodness, details remain sketchy, though pricing is expected to be around $200 with a two-year agreement. Brazil's iPad production deal is 'in doubt'
Tech product manufacturer Foxconn has been in talks with Brazil to open a factory in that country for some time now, but apparently talks have begun to break down. Reuters now says the proposed US$12 billion deal is "in doubt" because Brazil lacks skilled labor and isn't meeting Foxconn's expectations for tax breaks.
Foxconn operates factories in several countries, with its most (in)famous operations in Shenzhen, China, where the manufacturer builds products for Apple and most other major tech companies. The proposed factory in Brazil likely would have supplemented iPad and iPhone-building operations in

HTC Holiday spotted sunning itself on Australian shores
Australian carrier Telstra has revealed this 4.5-inch colossus from HTC, and the above picture from CNET shows it's likely to arrive under its Holiday moniker. This is the first LTE smartphone announced for Australia, while something similarly tall, dark and Android recently arrived in Korea as the HTC Raider 4G. CNET reports specs that tally with that other model: the big screen is qHD and the power comes from a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU coupled with 1GB of RAM. Shazam switches back to free model for iOS apps
Music ID service Shazam says it is switching back to a completely free model for iOS. In November 2009 the company introduced an app called Encore, which required a $5 annual subscription but let people create an unlimited number of tags, unlike the suddenly restricted free software. The free app is once again allowing unlimited tagging as a result of an ad deal with Capital One.

Dell XPS 14z coming: 'world's thinnest' full-feature laptop
Dell once again staked out a position against Apple Thursday with word that it would launch the XPS 14z. A 14-inch version of the XPS 15z we reviewed earlier, it will stay under an inch thick with the screen size. Microsoft announces new $10 Zune Music Pass, expands service to Canada
It may not enjoy quite the same level of buzz that the likes of Spotify, Rdio and MOG have been basking in lately, but Microsoft's Zune service is still kicking, and the company's now working to make it a bit more appealing and more widely available. For folks in the US, the big change today is a new $10 per month Zune Music Pass, which is identical to the existing $15 service with the notable exception that you no longer get to keep ten free MP3s each month (that $15 option remains available to existing subscribers, though).

Psystar loses appeal to Apple on attempt to sell Mac clones
The US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday rejected Psystar's appeal over its loss to Apple. The decision upheld an earlier verdict that the Florida PC builder was violating Apple's copyrights for Mac OS X through its promotions and violating the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) through hacks that got Mac OS X to load on generic Intel hardware. Psystar's lone win was a right to public access of court records, denying Apple's request to seal them after the court procedure was finished.

Gericht weist Psystars Einspruch ab

ZTE Smart Tab 10 makes its way through FCC with Vodafone branding
Just three days ago, the ZTE Smart Tab 7 strolled through the FCC, flashing a Google-branded tramp stamp, and now its older sibling, the Smart Tab 10, is following suit. The probable 10-incher isn't revealing a whole lot, but it does have the same Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G logos riding on its lower back. It's also sporting what looks to be a back-facing camera in the upper-right corner, just like little sis. Shazam offers unlimited free tagging to iPhone app
Users of Shazam, the popular iOS app that allows people to discover what song is playing on the radio, television, or almost anywhere, will be happy to hear that Shazam is offering unlimited free tagging in its iPhone app. Shazam allows users to simply hold up their iPhone while a song is playing, which the app will then identify, or tag.

Dell confirms XPS 14z will go on sale in the US in the 'coming weeks'
Remember that XPS 14z Dell teased at IFA? Yeah, well, it's coming soon. As in, "the coming weeks" soon. The company just confirmed it's on the cusp of shipping here in the states, and while the outfit stopped short of giving a starting price, it's good and ready to talk specs. As we reported last month, it has the same industrial design as its big brother, the XPS 15z, and we're told it, too, measures less than an inch thick (0.9 inches, to be precise). Steve Jobs reportedly tried to defuse the Samsung issue in 2010
Apple and Samsung butted heads in a Sydney, Australia courtroom on Thursday; arguing over an injunction that could ban the sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet. During the proceedings, Apple executive Richard Lutton revealed that Steve Jobs contacted Samsung back in 2010. The Apple CEO reached out to the Korean manufacturer because of the "deep relationship" between the two companies. Jobs tried to head off any legal action by giving Samsung a "chance to do the right thing."

Kobo's Vox Android tablet appears online briefly, gets Canadian release date and pricing
A day after another little-known e-reader manufacturer announced a tablet, a new Android slate from Kobo made a brief online appearance on Future Shop's site, only to be quickly taken down. According to the Canadian retailer, the FCC-approved tablet will offer up a 7-inch display with a 1024 x 600 resolution, WiFi, a speaker (perhaps the reason behind the Vox name) and 8GB of storage. The tablet is apparently set for an October 17th release in that country, priced at $250 Canadian.

Apple cuts off boxed software for educational stores
Apple is halting almost all sales of boxed software to campus resellers, a circulating email memo indicates. The message was recently sent to customers at a "major academic institution," ZDNet reports. "Apple confirmed today that, with limited exception, they will cease to ship boxed software to campus resellers," the notice reads. "This includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife, iWork, Apple Remote Desktop, and Aperture, among others.

Amazon CEO: if just building a tablet, you won't succeed
Most of those who have failed at tablets and other home electronics were too focused on the hardware alone, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in an interview following the launch of the Kindle Fire tablet. He explained to TechCrunch that Amazon would do well with the Kindle Fire because it treated the Android slate as an "end-to-end service," not just an isolated design. Apple issues update to fix flickering with 24" Cinema Display and Thunderbolt
Buyers of the 24-inch Apple LED Cinema Display who connected the device to Thunderbolt-equipped Macs were dismayed to find that the screen exhibited a flickering problem. The issue first came to light in February after the first Thunderbolt Mac, the early 2011 MacBook Pro, was released. Now AppleInsider is reporting Apple has released a firmware update to resolve the flickering issue.
The update notes state that the fix will only install when the display is connected to a Mac with the Thunderbol

Microsoft reportedly adding video from Comcast, Verizon, HBO Go and others to Xbox Live

Berichte über erste Samples der Kepler-GPU von Nvidia
Bereits in der letzten Woche berichtete SemiAccurate darüber, dass zwei Nvidia-GPUs auf Basis der in 28 nm gefertigten „Kepler“-Architektur ihr Tape-Out hinter sich haben. Scosche just revealed two new earphone sets under its Realm brand. The high-end over-the-ear headphones are made up of the RH1056md in either black or white as well as the IEM856m in-ear headphones in the same color choices. Zune Pass gets $10 plan, Canada to rekindle Windows Phone
Microsoft in an update Thursday recommitted itself to music by launching a new, lower cost Zune Pass. The new option will cost the same $10 per month as competing services but drop the 10 free permanent MP3 tracks from the $15 original. Listeners will also sync to fewer computers and devices, down from six to four, when the plan goes live October 3.

Capacitive touch brush stylus made from conductive thread
Artist Margarita Benitez really wanted a Nomad Brush for her iPad but didn't have the cash for the actual thing, so she did the next best: she made one herself. Analyst rumor: RIM stops BlackBerry PlayBook production [U]
(Update: denied) Collins Stewart analyst John Vinh in a research note put forward a controversial claim that RIM was stopping BlackBerry PlayBook production. iPhone 5 to have 21Mbps HSPA+ data? China Unicom says so
We know that Apple won't be unveiling its next superphone for a few more days, but we may have a tasty tidbit about the iPhone 5 ahead of schedule. So the story goes, China Unicom's Deputy Director Huang Wenlian was making a presentation at Macworld Asia, and stated that the new iPhone would utilize the company's HSPA+ 21Mbps network. Brazilian bank could pull funding for Foxconn tablet factory
Brazil's national development bank, BNDES, could withdraw support for Foxconn's efforts to start iPad production in the country, reports say. Contrary to earlier reports Foxconn has yet to actually begin production in Brazil, although the country's president, Dilma Rousseff, has previously suggested that tablets could roll off the assembly line by the end of the year. Talks are stalling, a local publication claims.

Police break up fake iPhone ring in China
Chinese police have arrested five members of an organized gang that was making and selling fake iPhones. The members would buy components, some of them genuine, on the black market and assemble the phones in rented Shanghai apartments. The police seized about 200 iPhones in the raid. Each iPhone had an estimated build cost of 2,000 yuan (US$313 as of this writing) and sold for almost twice that on the black market. These dupes were so well done that many people had a hard time distinguishing the fake iPhones from the real ones.

LEGO Life of George game combines iPhone and real LEGOs
It was only a matter of time before toy companies began to develop interactive toys that use the iPhone and iPad. Earlier this week, Disney unveiled Appmates, a series of physical toy cars that you can drive on the screen of the iPad.
And today, Lego unveiled its new Life of George game that includes an EyeCue-enabled iOS app. The iOS app contains George's photos and it's your job to recreate these photographs using the game's 144 Legos and gaming mat. When you are done, you use the camera to take a photo of your model. Points will be awarded for the building speed and accuracy of the model.

China Unicom Deputy Director Huang Wenliang may have inadvertently spoiled Apple's plans for a big leap in 3G performance on GSM-based iPhones in a presentation on Wednesday. Pointing out network evolution over time at Macworld Beijing, he matter-of-factly claimed that the iPhone 5 would use 21Mbps HSPA+ data that China Unicom had been adding since 2010. T-Mobile joins Verizon to support Samsung in Apple patent lawsuit
Verizon was the first carrier to come to Samsung's defense in the company's patent dispute with Apple, but it's not the last. As if going to the movies wasn't getting expensive enough, now theater owners and studios are fighting over the cost of 3D glasses -- again. Sony Pictures sent out a letter indicating that starting in May 2012, it won't foot the bill for moviegoer's 3D glasses anymore, pushing the charge onto the theater instead. How to enable the FTP server (ftpd) in Lion
Apple decided to remove the GUI for enabling and disabling FTP from Mac OS X Lion. Generally speaking, that's not a bad move, because most times SFTP is available anywhere FTP is, and SFTP is far superior in terms of security. No one should be using FTP over the Internet.
However, there are some cases when using FTP is perfectly fine. For instance, transferring large files over your own LAN. I do this all the time when transferring DVD rips from one machine to another. Others have mentioned that they have some devices which only support FTP so SFTP isn't an option.
Personally, I prefer FTP on my LAN because, since it is unencrypted, there's no extra processing time needed to encrypt and decrypt the transfer. I'm also willing to admit that there may not be much practical difference in most cases -- that is, I don't know that SFTP is much slower than FTP, but when you're talking about "8

Apple: Steve Jobs told Samsung to 'do the right thing' first
Apple's then-CEO Steve Jobs personally got in touch with Samsung last year to try and head off a protracted legal battle, patent council senior director Richard Lutton claimed in an Australian court hearing on a possible preliminary ban. Supposedly trying to head off legal action, Jobs made some of the initial contact, giving Samsung a "chance to do the right thing," the WSJ heard. It was the "deep relationship" Apple had with Samsung as one of its most important suppliers that led him to make the gesture, according to the testimony.

Facebook's reported plans to launch its iPad app next week might be joined by Project Spartan. New claims early Thursday had the social network planning to roll out both next week. Daily iPhone App: Shadowgun
I was a pretty big fan of Madfinger Games' Samurai II: Vengeance -- it had some solid gameplay, but the really amazing thing about the title was the way it looked. Samurai II offered great art and smart graphics programming. Now, Madfinger has turned their graphical expertise to the third-person shooter genre, and the impressive result is Shadowgun, now available on the App Store.

Apple has added a firmware update specific to the 24-inch LED Cinema Display that addresses an issue that can cause intermittent flickering when connected to a Thunderbolt-enabled Mac. WSJ: Jobs, Cook get largest equity grants in tech industry
Silicon Valley companies have long used restricted-stock units and other "equity grants" either as rewards and compensation or as incentive to improve the value of a company. During the dot-com boom of the late 90s, stock options and other similar perks were common. Acer hopes ultrabooks will slow down iPad, save PCs
Acer VP Scott Lin in remarks captured Wednesday was adamant that Intel's MacBook Air-inspired ultrabook concept would help rescue the PC industry. Tablets like the iPad were mostly popular because they were light, thin, and had good battery life while focused on entertainment, he said with Digitimes in earshot. Samsung intros Exynos 4212, fast 64GB flash, mobile cameras
Samsung used its self-run Mobile Solutions Forum to show a slew of new chip and memory technology. The headliner was its Exynos 4212. The dual-core chip is primarily a clock speed boost and jumps from 1.2GHz to 1.5GHz, helped in part by a new 32 nanometer process. T-Mobile joins Verizon in opposing Apple ban on Samsung gear
T-Mobile on Wednesday joined Verizon's opposition to a ban on Samsung by filing its own amicus brief in the Northern District of California court handling Apple's lawsuit. The carrier contended that it would "unnecessarily harm" T-Mobile to impose a preliminary ban on Samsung's phones and tablets, and was especially badly timed. With a hearing on October 13, a ban would mean it "could not find comparable replacement products" during the holidays, it said.

Follow-up: Polish iTunes Store now live
After a bit of a false start in the initial hour, the Polish iTunes Store -- at least the music portion -- now appears to be operational, according to a MacNN reader report. Reader Adam S. was able to purchase a copy of the Black-Eyed Peas' latest album from the store, which uses Euro pricing of .99 € (approximately $1.35 US) per song and around 10€ ($13.50) per album, according to a report from Polish site MyApple.

Sprint drops 1-year contract, BTA ahead of likely iPhone 5
Sprint is planning more subscriber policy changes in what's increasingly seen as preparation for the iPhone 5 next week. Report suggests iTunes store coming to additional European countries
A report from Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita claims Apple is preparing to launch its iTunes music store in ten new countries throughout Europe. These new additions may include Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and seven other unnamed locations.

Vodafone starts carrying generic micro SIMs
Vodafone will begin selling non-Apple branded Micro SIM cards. The wireless carrier has confirmed to Pocket-lint that it will begin offering the miniature SIM cards in the "not too distant future." Will new iPhone designs include Europe's common charger?
Way back in 2009, the European Commission reached a voluntary agreement with 10 mobile phone manufacturers to adopt a standard Micro-USB charge and sync interface. Apple, with its proprietary Dock connector design, was one of the parties that signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) stating that they'd comply. Could the new iPhone(s) expected next week finally move to the standard connector? There are some compelling arguments why Apple won't and will stick with the 30-pin dock connector design for the foreseeable future.
On one hand, this isn't legislation, so Apple is under no obligation to comply with the new standard. On the other hand, the company did sign the MoU, and to keep in the good graces of the EU at a time when Apple is locked in a number of patent-infringement battles, the company should

Star Trek: The Next Generation is coming to Blu-ray, starting in 2012 (video)
It's official, Star Trek: The Next Generation will follow the lead of the original series and be released in remastered HD form next year. The official site reveals 2012 will actually see two TNG releases on Blu-ray in honor of its 25th anniversary. A single disc preview package consisting of the pilot Encounter at Farpoint, and episodes Sins of the Father and The Inner Light called The Next Level arrives first in January with a $21.99 MSRP, followed by season one later in the year and subsequent seasons after that. The Daily musters just 120,000 weekly readers half a year on
The Daily's readership figures are less than a quarter of what they need to be to break even, Publicis Groupe executive VP John Nitti revealed in a discussion Wednesday.
