Daily iPad App: Cars
Cars.com launched a free iPad app called Cars to help you find your next car with your iPad.
The app features reviews from the Cars.com editors and side-by-side comparisons of up to three vehicles along with videos, specs, and costs. When you select a car, a section on the right shows similar cars.
After your price the car you like, you can see what's in stock near your zip code and ask for a quote. The app also lets you find used cars.
The app was stable, but not every car had full reviews. There was a like/dislike section, but it wasn't the depth I'd like to see. Videos sometimes were slow coming up, but as they say in the auto biz, your mileage might vary. The app also works only one way in l

Ice Cream Sandwich gets a two-minute tour, courtesy of a lucky eBay shopper (video)
The one Android update to rule them all -- better known as Ice Cream Sandwich -- is penciled in for an official launch sometime in the next two months, so it's only natural for some shots to leak out. We just weren't expecting a two-minute video showing off a few of the new features. AMD bestätigt Probleme mit 32 nm, senkt Prognose

Flickr for Android one-ups iPhone port with live capture
Yahoo devoted a rare amount of attention to Android first by launching Flickr for Android (free, Android Market) with new features the iPhone app doesn't have. The new app takes most of its direction from apps like Instagram or Picplz and lets users take shots directly from the app with post-shot filters. Users can cross-post to multiple social services at the same time, and recent uploads are organized in a stream that includes both the shots and comments side by side.

Humble Frozen Synapse Bundle collects for EFF, Child's Play
The group responsible for the Humble Bundle series of charity software collections has launched a new effort, this time known as the Humble Frozen Synapse Bundle. Frozen Synapse is a turn-based strategy game from Mode 7 in which players fight top-down gun battles. The twist is that each side runs its turns simultaneously, forcing players to take a best guess at where their opponents will be.

Travel ads doing especially well on the iPad
AllThingsD has an interesting report on the boom of travel ads in the last year. Mobile ad network Greystripe has seen travel-related mobile ad campaigns grow by 50% this past year. While researching why, they found the iPad has a lot to do with it. Greystripe found that a whopping 91% of iPad owners use their iPads for travel-related tasks, like booking flights and hotels, or planning trips.

Zeo sleep tracking system now available as an app
Zeo this week has introduced its Mobile Sleep System, which has the potential to help millions of Americans with sleep issues. Its system can monitor sleep phases including Light, Deep and REM sleep and send that data to user's iOS devices, with an Android app due soon. The data is synced with a user's online Zeo account and then used to come up with a ZQ sleep score. Before, users had to manually upload data stored on an memory card.

HTC Hero S coming to US Cellular next month alongside Wildfire S and Flyer

Free Press: FCC net neutrality rules don't go far enough
Public advocacy group Free Press put forward a formal petition for review (below) of the FCC's net neutrality rules before they take effect November 20. The group said the rules were too light on the mobile Internet as they only included a basic no-block rule and transparency on monitoring, not a guarantee that all legal traffic should be treated fairly. With cellular gaining ground, the argument that wireless was too new didn't work.

iFixit busts Apple's Thunderbolt Display wide open, no creamy center inside
It's been more than two months since Apple unveiled its Thunderbolt Display, and the gadget sadists over at iFixit are just getting around to picking the thing apart -- quite literally. So what has this dive into the 27-incher revealed? Lion still just third most popular version of OS X
Lion is still only the third most popular version of OS X, according to Chitika. New weekly data produced by the analytics firm puts Lion at just 14.18 percent of the market, compared with Snow Leopard, which remains dominant at 55.54 percent. iFixit tears down Apple's Thunderbolt display
iFixit has gone all destructo on Apple's new Thunderbolt display, and the gory details are now available over on their site. They ripped the beautiful monitor apart so you didn't have to, and inside they found the same display seen in the iMac Intel 27" from a couple of years ago, as well as a 49 watt, 2-speaker sound system, a big brushless fan, and a bunch of other impressive digital junk. It sounds like iFixit had a great time -- they say the disassembly didn't require any special tools (just a few suction cups and a couple of Torx screwdrivers) and rated the display 8 out of 10 for repairability.

Skype update for iOS adds anti-shake, Bluetooth connectivity and ads for freeloaders
Skype's latest app upgrade brings a few substantial features, some good, one not so. Alongside a new anti-shake video call function (limited to the iPhone's back-facing camera), you can now pair Bluetooth headsets with the VoIP calling service, something apparently "long requested" from Skype fans. However, users will now have to fork out for credit to avoid seeing advertising that's also baked into the new version. The update's now up for grabs on both the iPhone and iPad, though there are reports of a few teething troubles, including missing credit and account details. Swiss iBookstore starts selling books

InMobi: 41% of North America allegedly ready to buy iPhone 5
InMobi in a tentative study Wednesday claimed that a full 41 percent of North American cellphone owners planned to buy an iPhone 5. The interest, including Canada, Mexico, and the US, would have just over 50 percent of interested people buying within half a year. That number was built on assumptions of a new model and might drop to 15 percent if it turned out to be a mild update.

Amazon: new Kindle prices are with ads, 10-inch Fire hinted
Amazon in a follow-up to its Kindle overhaul revealed that its e-paper reader prices came with certain conditions. Analyst claims iPad 3 launch sped up to late January
Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek raised curiosity Wednesday with a research note claiming an accelerated iPad 3 launch. New iPhone 4s, iPod touches appear in Apple inventory system
Entries for slightly modified iPhone 4s and iPod touches are showing up in Apple's inventory system, an anonymous source says. The new iPhone models are reportedly identified with the codename N90A, linking them to the regular iPhone 4, the N90. The association may mean that the new SKUs are simply cheaper, 8GB iPhone 4s, rather than rumored iPhone 4S models, which would theoretically have the same amount of storage but a few upgrades, like faster processors.

Twitter prepares for iOS 5 launch
The launch of iOS 5 is right around the corner and Twitter is gearing up for an onslaught now that the social network will be integrated into iOS. So how is Twitter preparing to avoid a day-long fail whale when iOS launches?
According to Twitter's engineering VP Michael Abbott, the social network is not panicking about the upcoming increase in traffic. It's been slowly beefing up its servers and infrastructure over the past year. "During the last nine months, there's been more infrastructure changes at Twitter than there had been in the previous five years at the company," says Abbott in an interview with GigaOM.

Needham ups Apple estimates on Mac sales, influx of iPads
Needham & Co. analyst Charlie Wolf has raised his earnings-per-share forecasts for Apple. For the September quarter EPS is now predicted to come in at $7.37, rather than just $6.38; FY2011 has been tweaked by a dollar to sit at $28, and an early FY2012 outlook has been adjusted from $31 to $33. Wolf's stock target is unchanged at $540.

Nachdem feststeht, dass am 4. Oktober das neue iPhone von Apple vorgestellt wird, drängt sich natürlich gleich die nächste Frage auf: Wann kann man das iPhone 5 in Deutschland kaufen? Angeblich schon am 14. Oktober! Das Gerücht könnte stimmen.

Apple preparing to expand iTunes music, movies across Europe
Ten more European Union countries should soon be getting access to the iTunes Music Store, according to a music industry source in touch with Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita. Only Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic are mentioned by name. Apple though is said to be essentially ready to go with the expansion; a separate source suggests an October launch, which could in theory coincide with the company's October 4th press event or follow sometime thereafter.

Google wants Android info kept secret in DOJ's AT&T lawsuit
Google late Tuesday filed a motion asking US District Judge Ellen Huvelle to keep confidential Android details in the DOJ lawsuit over the AT&T merger. It was concerned that AT&T, T-Mobile, or the DOJ might reveal "competitively sensitive" detals, such as when new versions of Android or devices might ship. The filing seen by Bloomberg showed Google worried that the media or a rival like Apple would get information without Google knowing it would be made public.

Apple opposes Verizon's timing in Samsung case
Late last week, Verizon Wireless stepped into the heated battle between Apple and Samsung. The wireless carrier asked the federal court if it could file a brief in support of Samsung. In its brief. Verizon said an injection against Samsung would be harmful to US wireless customers and could stunt the growth of Verizon's 4G network. Apple responded to this filing on Tuesday and asked the court to either throw out the brief or allow Apple until October 6 to respond.

Trick: Windows Phone Mango-Update erzwingen

Falls ihr auch zu den Windows Phone 7-Usern gehört, die noch auf ihr Mango-Update warten (das unter Umständen noch einen Monat auf sich warten lassen kann): euch kann geholfen werden. Wie? Mit einem denkbar einfachen Trick kann man das Update via Zune-Software erzwingen, nämlich indem man man während des Update-Vorgangs ganz schnell die Verbindung zum Netz (Ethernet-Kabel oder WiFi) unterbricht. Beim nächsten Update-Versuch sollte es dann klappen, wenn nicht, das Ganze wiederholen.

Microsoft, Samsung cross-license patents, skip Android suit
Microsoft and Samsung on Wednesday confirmed rumors of patent licensing talks by striking a cross-licensing deal for patents. The agreement works almost uniformly in Microsoft's favor and will see Samsung both pay royalties for allegedly using Microsoft patents in Android as well as help develop and market Windows Phone hardware. Daily iPhone App: Emissary of War
Emissary of War is a new title from Cedar Hill Games, a studio run by a former Bioware developer who's gotten into mobile development. The game is an action RPG title, and while it is a little short, there's quite a bit of polish here, some fun humor, and a good chunk of intriguing gameplay. You can point and click your hero around the game while hacking and slashing through various enemies, and he has a potion-throwing buddy that will help out both in battle and by healing at the correct times. There's a Rage mechanic for extra attacks, and lots of upgrades and collectibles to find as well. There's Game Center integration for achievements, too, which adds a little extra replayability to the affair.

Disney bringt interaktives Spielzeug Appmates fürs iPad

Disney plant eine neue Spielzeugklasse, die mit dem iPad interagieren soll. Zuerst kommen dabei im Oktober Spielzeugautos aus dem Pixar-Film Cars, die mit dem iPad irgendwo zwischen Brettspiel und Videogame interagieren werden. In Großbritannien soll eines der neuartigen Spielzeugautos 13 Pfund aka 15 Euro kosten, ein Paket mit zwei Comicautos wird mit 20 Pfund aka 23 Euro zu Buche schlagen. Die entsprechende App ist unterdessen gratis und hat auch einen Modus für Nutzer, die kein Extraspielzeug erworben haben.

Mozilla Firefox 7 offiziell erschienen, soll Speicherbedarf verbessern
Mozilla hat kürzlich die siebte Version des freien Browsers Firefox veröffentlicht. Als die größte neue Funktion wird die Implementierung der aus dem MemShrink-Projekt gewonnenen Erkenntnisse genannt. California to begin collected sales tax from online retailer
Beginning next year, California will require large online retailers to begin collecting sales tax from state residents, a move that will likely cause other states to do the same, ending a prolonged era of relatively light taxation for internet purchases. Governor Jerry Brown signed the measure into law, replacing an earlier regulation that had counted affiliates as "physical presences" for tax purposes, causing web merchants to sever affiliate links in the state.

T-Mobile posts letter to customers about the iPhone
T-Mobile has posted an open letter to their customers, summarizing earlier remarks made by Chief Marketing Officer Cole Brodman, acknowledging in unusually candid terms that it was aware of "many" customers who were disappointed that the company does not carry the iPhone. Apple opposes Verizon step-in over Samsung on technicalities
Apple on Tuesday opposed Verizon's amicus brief resisting a preliminary ban on Samsung. The iPhone maker hoped to dismiss or otherwise delay Verizon's response on technical grounds, arguing that federal court rules prevented a non-party from making such a statement in a district court. If the court didn't reject it outright, Apple wanted until October 6 to respond so that it could keep preparing for the October 13 hearing on the possible ban.

Rumor: Apple may axe iPod classic, shuffle soon
A rumor with a potentially far-ranging impact has alleged that Apple might drop the iPod classic and iPod shuffle. The two remaining non-touch iPods would disappear "this year," TUAW heard from its lone source. Only the iPod nano and iPod touch would remain, although it's not clear if Apple would slash their prices or deliver upgrades.

It's pronounced "twerp," but don't mistake TeamWin's Recovery Project for a run-of-the-mill chump. The software is intended as a touchscreen replacement for ROM managers such as TWRP 1.0 and ClockworkMod Recovery. In addition to the all-important backup, restore and install functions, the utility now provides a full GUI for touch input that's fully customizable with XML themes. We've been sitting on a tip for a while until things came into greater focus, but now that the speculation meter has exploded (see this CNet story), it's a good time to tell you all what we've heard. It seems that the "product transition" Apple mentioned on the last earnings call could very well be within the iPod line. Specifically, if you want to buy an iPod shuffle or iPod classic from Apple, you should do it sooner rather than later. We've heard those two iPods are getting the axe this year.

Semi Secret publishing Aquaria for iPad
Developer Semi Secret (the folks behind the popular game Canabalt) posted on its blog the company will be publishing Aquaria, a very popular indie game from a few years ago, on the iPad. Aquaria is a really beautiful underwater exploration title, and as you can see by the teaser video released by the team, it looks to be adapted quite well for the iPad, making solid use of the touch interface and the tablet itself, along with a few other new gameplay improvements.

Toshiba intros Thrive 7-inch tablet, says it's 'done right'
Toshiba in an evening unveiling unveiled the Thrive 7" tablet. The Android 3.2 slate still carries a dual-core Tegra 2 and even a 1280x800 display like its 10-inch cousin, but it shrinks ports to fit the same expansion in a smaller profile. A microSDHC card slot, micro HDMI, and micro USB let it get expansion through either adapters or direct connections, including with a Toshiba-written file transfer app to let users shuffle files.

Twitter: iOS 5 integration will generate more traffic
Twitter has already grown by 82 percent in just the last nine months, ZDNet reports, but the company behind the social-networking phenom is expecting Apple's integration of Twitter functionality throughout iOS 5 to spark massive mobile growth, Twitter Vice-President of Engineering Michael Abbott told an audience at GigaOM's Mobilize conference in San Francisco earlier today. It looks like the AT200 isn't the only Toshiba tablet poised to land in time for the holidays. The company just announced the Thrive 7", a (surprise!) 7-inch version of the original. Study: iPad cornered 80% of North American tablets in Q2 11
Apple had a full 80 percent of the North American tablet market this past spring, Strategy Analytics said in a study Tuesday. Minecraft Pocket Edition headed to iOS later this year
We've been waiting awhile for an official Minecraft client for iOS, and it looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer. Penclic Mouse pointing device set to roll out in US and Canada
The Swedish-designed Penclic Mouse has already been making the rounds in Europe for a little while, but it looks like it's now finally ready to make the jump to North America. ITC to look into HTC's September dispute with Apple
The US International Trade Commission on Wednesday determined that it would look into the trade dispute accompanying HTC's latest lawsuit versus Apple. The agreement doesn't condemn Apple but does consider HTC's case serious enough to merit an investigation. If the ITC rules in favor of HTC, it could lead to bans primarily on iOS device sales.

French group calls for remote deletion of 'Jew or Not Jew'
In a strange twist on an ongoing drama in France, a Jewish developer who created an iOS app that identifies public figures who are Jewish has drawn the ire of a group fighting against anti-Semitism, saying compiling such a file (even for heritage purposes) is against French law. The group, which has already convinced Apple to pull the app from the French App Store, is now arguing in court that Apple should remotely delete all copies of the app, French news site MacGeneration reports.

Facebook mobile VP wants iOS 5 link, allows for own phone
Facebook's mobile lead Erick Tseng at the Mobilize conference pressed for the possibility of iOS 5 integration while at the same time leaving doors open for more. Auch Mozillas Thunderbird bekommt die 7.0
Erst gestern hat Mozilla das siebte Major Release des beliebten Firefox-Browsers offiziell herausgegeben. Praktisch direkt im Anschluss folgt nun die Aktualisierung des kostenlosen E-Mail-Clients Thunderbird aus gleichem Hause. Die finale Version 7.0 ist ab sofort zum freien Download verfügbar.

Hearst cracks 300,000 tablet magazine downloads per month
Hearst on Tuesday said it had passed getting 300,000 paid mobile magazine downloads per month. The growth is a rapid acceleration from past months and comes purely from those buying through an iPad, Nook Color, or the Zinio Reader app on multiple platforms. It didn't say how many of these were subscriptions versus single-issue sales.
