Nächstes großes iOS-Update soll OTA-Updates bringen
Laut 9to5Mac soll das nächste größere Update von iOS, iOS 5.0, OTA-Updates bringen, also Firmware-Updates, die vom Gerät aus geladen werden, wie auch Applikationen aus dem App Store. Der Code dazu ist bereits vorhanden, so kann das neue Apple TV Updates über bestehende WiFi-Verbindungen laden. iPhones, iPads und iPod touches dagegen müssen momentan noch über USB mit iTunes verbunden werden und können dann erst aktualisiert werden. Mobiltelefone der Konkurrenz schaffen das schon lange: Zum Beispiel webOS- oder Android-Geräte installieren Software-Updates bequem von unterwegs.Nun soll aber iOS 5 die Möglichkeit bringen, Updates mobil zu installieren. Apple closing in on Nokia as world's top smartphone vendor
Research firm IDC has published the results from its most recent survey on smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2011. There's lots of interesting insights from the data, but most interesting of all is that Apple appears to be in the last leg of its runup to overtake Nokia as the world's top smartphone vendor.
Currently Nokia sits in first place, controlling 24.3% of the smartphone market with 24.2 million phones sold. Apple holds the second spot holding 18.7% of the market with 18.7 million iPhones sold in the first quarter of 2011. That's a difference of only 5.5 million units and is bad news for Nokia as Apple's Q1 2011 iPhone sales grew 114% year over year, wh

Samsung Infuse 4G hands-on
We've seen it powered down and had it dangled in front of us and now, four months after its launch, we've finally had a chance to play with a real, working Samsung Infuse 4G. Yudu promises to help magazines evade App Store surcharges
A new service, Yudu, is promising to help magazine publishers avoid Apple's normal take of App Store revenue, according to Reuters. Apple claims 30 percent of the revenue from both general app sales and any in-app purchases. Yudu has set up a dual subscription system, though, which it says will allow people to download magazines through the App Store even when the purchase is made via the publisher.

New York Times website harvests iPhone location data
The New York Times Company Research and Development Lab has developed its own tool to take advantage of location-tracking data that caused a kerfluffle when it was discovered that Apple was collecting said data. Although the issue has been resolved, the newspaper points out that regular people can benefit from the information as well as Apple.
Openpaths is a database where anonymous users can contribute their personal location data by uploading it from their phones. The data is password-protected and contributors can only reveal who they are when they grant access to research

Samsung Infuse 4G is AT&T's first 21Mbps smartphone
AT&T has been adding a little dash (and asterisk) of 4G to all its phones as of late, but not all of those handsets are created equal -- the Motorola Atrix 4G, HTC Inspire 4G and HP Veer 4G are technically capable of only HSDPA Category 10, which equates to maximum download speeds of 14.4Mbps. Not so for the new Samsung Infuse 4G, as it's been boosted to HSDPA Category 14, which bumps its particular flavor of 4G up to 21Mbps. OWC launches 16GB RAM kits for 2011 iMac, 32GB to ship soon
Other World Computing has launched 16GB RAM upgrade options for the 2011 iMac line released earlier this week. The RAM upgrades are PC3-10600 DDR3 1333MHz rated, and available at substantial discounts compared to Apple's offerings. A 8GB kit with 2x4GB is $105, just less than half the price at Apple, and a full 16GB kit -- 4x4GB -- is $210, a 65 percent savings over Apple's $600.

IDC: Apple close to passing Nokia in smartphone share
Apple is now a large enough smartphone maker that it could soon overtake Nokia for the top spot, IDC said Wednesday. The 18.65 million iPhones it shipped in the winter were enough to give it 18.7 percent of the smartphone sphere just as Nokia's relatively stale growth, to 24.2 million, saw its share drop down to 24.3 percent from a much higher 38.8 percent just a year ago. RIM's quarters don't overlap with most of the industry, but IDC believed that RIM shipped 13.9 million BlackBerrys, leading to a drop from 19.1 percent of the field in early 2010 to just 14 percen

Apple posts iMac, MacBook Pro updates
Apple last night posted four important updates for 2011 iMacs and various MacBook Pro models. The most critical is Mac OS X 10.6.7 Update for iMac (early 2011) 1.0, a 382.56MB file that targets numerous problems. The patch should for instance improve graphics stability, and the performance of both 3D rendering and FaceTime. Some bugs eliminated include ones with Back to My Mac, the Mac App Store and transferring files to SMB servers.

Estimate: 2.5m Windows Phone 7 devices shipped in early 2011
Canalys late Wednesday provided one of the few estimates of Windows Phone 7 shipments for early 2011. The analyst team believed that Microsoft's combined partners shipped under 2.5 million phones between January and March. Each of the top five Android phone makers sold more than this number by themselves, and Samsung's in-house Bada OS also saw more shipments at 3.5 million.

Global rare earth supply deficit should turn into a surplus by 2013, Goldman Sachs says
It looks like rare earth elements are getting slightly less rare. According to a research note released by Goldman Sachs today, the world's rare earth supply deficit will probably reach its apex this year, before converting into a surplus by 2013. Goldman's analysts constructed their projections based on evidence that many Western companies have begun building their own mines, in response to China's overwhelming market dominance. MACDefender malware evolves into new forms
The MACDefender malware made public on Monday has already mutated into different versions, says security company Intego. A given example is "Mac Security," a fake antivirus program. As with MACDefender an attack begins when a person clicks on a malicious web link. This pops up a fake Windows Explorer window, claiming that a computer is infected with a prompt to remove offending code.

Dell's stylish new XPS 15z laptop surfaces
We just heard talk of a new 15.6-inch Dell laptop yesterday that was said to be thin and streamlined, and Mobile Review has now scored some pictures of what may be that very same laptop. The Daily gets 800K downloads but loses $10 million this quarter
The latest quarterly results from News Corporation say The Daily, the much-publicized iPad newspaper, has lost US$10 million. Much of the loss is associated start-up costs. News Corp. reports The Daily costs about $500,000 a week to produce, and revenues depend on advertising and subscriptions. The company has not revealed how many of the people who downloaded the free introductory subscriptions have converted to the pay model.

UK's Telegraph agrees to new Apple subscription terms
Major UK newspaper The Telegraph has released a new version of its iPad app, bringing it up to v2.0. Apple plans to make Thunderbolt, USB ports thinner, more durable
A patent uncovered by AppleInsider suggests Apple may be improving the I/O ports on its desktop and notebook Mac computers. The approved patent describes several design changes that make the USB or Thunderbolt ports slimmer and more aesthetically pleasing. The bulky shell enclosing could be removed and replaced with a single, seamless material that expands dynamically to fit the cable. The port could also be crafted so it matches the color and texture of a computer giving the sides and back of the machine a smooth profile.

Warner Brothers kauft Flixster und Rotten Tomatoes
Warner Bros Home Entertainment hat einen Kauf der Kinofilm-Site Flixster angekündigt. Der Kaufpreis wurde nicht genannt. Das Studio erklärte, dass Flixster weiterhin unabhängig arbeiten könne. Man werde das Angebot der Site aber über Filmbesprechungen hinaus erweitern. Geplant sei eine "Verwaltung digitaler Inhalte und deren Verbreitung auf alle verbundenen Digitalgeräte". Als Teil des Kaufvertrags werde Warner Bros außerdem die Kino-News- und -Kritik-Site "Rotten Tomatoes" erhalten, die zu Flixster gehört. The idea of cars preventing accidents before they happen isn't novel, but at the end of the day, collision detection systems are only as smart as the information being fed to them. Nielsen: iPad still 82% of tablets, cutting into PC use
The launch of a wave of Android-based tablets has so far done little to cut into the iPad's share, Nielsen found in a new study. Apple had a combined 82 percent share of US tablets at the start of the spring split almost evenly between 3G and Wi-Fi models. The newcomer Motorola Xoom had two percent, but even established Android tablets like the Dell Streak and Samsung Galaxy Tab had just three and four percent respectively, the study said.

Apple in talks with potential new ambient sensor maker
Apple is currently in talks with a Taiwanese firm, Capella Microsystems, that could see different ambient light sensors built into iPhones, industry sources say. Allegedly Capella has already delivered samples to Apple for verification. Apple's interest in testing them is said to stem from problems with the sensor in the iPhone 4; part orders would, however, only be made by the end of 2011 at the earliest, the sources add.

Sony Ericsson has just outed a brand new pair of compact Xperia smartphones. The new Xperia Mini will run Android Gingerbread (2.3) on a 3-inch, multitouch, scratch-resistant display, which comes with Sony's proprietary Bravia Engine with Reality Display. There's a 1GHz processor inside, access to Android Market, and home screen customization with custom shortcuts available in the four corners of the screen. A 30 percent improvement in battery life is also touted, courtesy of a larger cell. Acer believes netbooks can still have market despite iPad
Netbooks should still find a significant audience in spite of the success of the iPad and other tablets, Acer said in a group interview Wednesday. The PC builder accepted that tablets were cutting into netbook sales, but there was "still opportunity" to sell netbooks, even in the tablet-friendly US. Apple will likely reveal "major feature/function updates" at this year's WWDC in early June, says Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. Foxconn employees asked to sign 'no suicide' pledge
English tabloid newspaper the Daily Mail is reporting that employees working for Foxconn, assembler of many Apple products, are being forced to sign pledges not to commit suicide. The report from the tabloid paper points to an investigation conducted by the Centre for Research on Multinational Companies and Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (Sacom). Sacom claims it uncovered "appalling" working conditions at the Foxconn factory that include excessive overtime and public humiliation.

Future iPad models to include a 3D display
A future version of the iPad may rock a 3D display according to a dubious mix of Hollywood and industry sources. This rumor comes fresh from RCR Wireless which has secured the tantalizing tip from a Hollywood insider who claims "the fact that the iPad 3 is 3D is a dead cert."
This same source suggests Apple's decision to go 3D has thrown Hollywood into tizzy. The Apple iPad is selling millions and major motion picture producers are supposedly rushing frantically to produce 3D content for the popular tablet device.
A second RCR Wireless source with industry ties claims Foxconn has "spilled the 3D iPad beans", but the source fails to offer any details besides this idiomatic phrase.

Schweizer Verlage begraben E-Reader-Pläne
Mehrere Schweizer Verlage haben ihr Vorhaben aufgegeben, eine eigene eReading-Lösung für den Schweizer Markt einzuführen. Im November 2009 hatten Ringier, Tamedia, Edipresse, die NZZ-Gruppe und Orell Füssli angekündigt, eine geräteunabhängige eReading-Lösung zu entwickeln, um darüber Zeitungen, Zeitschriften und Bücher in elektronischer Form zu vertreiben. Die Federführung des Projektes lag bei der Swisscom, welche 2010 auch bereits einen Pilotversuch durchgeführt hatte.

The number of apps in the Android Market should surpass those in the App Store as soon as August, argues research2guidance, a German research group. The date assumes that current growth rates for both the Market and the App Store will be maintained. Microsoft ad site falsely compares MacBook Air to netbooks
Microsoft has revealed the pressure from Apple on PC market share with a newly posted Canadian page trying to steer buyers away from desktop and notebook Macs. The "Do the Math" site tries to play on stereotypes of Macs always costing more by showing Windows 7 PCs that are supposedly either cheaper or offer more features for a comparable price. Some comparisons are valid, though the comparisons ignore like real-world battery life, where Apple usually comes out on top, and the greatly reduced need to use security software.

Apple approves Canabalt clone
Late last year, the developer who created popular indie game Canabalt released the game's source code under an MIT open source license. This license lets other developers use the underlying game engine to power their own games for either private or commercial distribution. While the underlying engine is free to use, the Canabalt developer clearly states other developers cannot "distribute or redistribute our game code, art or sounds."
Unfortunately, PLD Soft appears to have violated this open source license by taking the source code, repackaging it with minimal changes and submitting it to the App Store as an app called

IDC: 13% of computers to use ARM chips by 2015
Computers using ARM processors could quickly become a large part of the computing industry in four years, IDC said in a new estimate. It expected ARM to make up 13 percent of the category by 2015. Smule has brought its popular iPad app, Magic Piano, over to the iPhone and iPod touch this week, and one of the best things about it is that it's completely free. It still features all of the various music modes that the original app offers, including that one cats like so much, and the mode that allows you to play any number of famous songs just by tapping the screen on your own rhythm and time. Glaubt man Cupertino-Besserwissern, plant Apple zukünftige Updates von iOS direkt OTA auf die Geräte zu bringen, die Verbindung mit iTunes wie noch heute Nacht würde also wegfallen. Moore's Law verlängert: Intel stellt Chips mit 3D-Transistoren her
Intel hat angekündigt, dass es die Volumenproduktion von 3D-Transistoren aufnehmen kann. Die dafür erfundene Struktur nennt es Tri-Gate. Sie kommt erstmals im 22-Nanometer-Prozessor mit dem Codenamen "Ivy Bridge" zum Einsatz. Webstatistiken April 2011: WebKit-Browser mit Plus
Laut den neusten Internet-Statistiken von NetApplications konnten im vergangenen Monat April Safari und Chrome zulegen, während Firefox, Opera und Internet Explorer weiter an Marktanteilen verloren. Obschon sowohl Microsoft mit dem Internet Explorer 9 und Mozilla mit Firefox 4 gerade erst mit neuen Versionen ihrer Browser auftrumpften, konnten beide Browser ihre Marktanteile im vergangenen Monat nicht ausbauen, sondern mussten ein leichtes Minus hinnehmen. Alle Versionen von Microsofts Internet Explorer nehmen mittlerweile noch 55.11 Prozent ein, während Firefox 21.63 Prozent innehat. IE verlor gegenüber März 2011 0.81 Prozentpunkte, Firefox gegenüber dem Vormonat 0.17 Prozent. Vor einem Jahr noch lag der Internet Explorer bei 59.95 Prozent und 2009 noch bei knapp 70 Prozent. Firefox hatte vor einem Jahr noch knapp 25 Prozent Marktanteil.

LastPass meldet möglichen Angriff
Der Online-Kennwort-Dienst LastPass berichtet in seinem Blog von einem möglichen Angriff, der zumindest zu ungewöhnlichem Datenverkehr geführt hat. Angesichts der Datenmenge könnte es allerdings sein, dass alle E-Mail-Adressen und die Daten zum Master-Kennwort übertragen wurden. Alle Nutzer müssen daher sicherheitshalber ihr Hauptkennwort ändern, da dieses von den Angreifern möglicherweise durch die erbeuteten Daten erraten werden kann.

Sony: Anonymous könnte doch hinter PSN-Angriff stecken
Sony will den Angriff auf seine Netzwerke anscheinend ein weiteres Mal dem Hackerkollektiv Anonymous in die Schuhe schieben. In einem Brief an den US-Kongress schreibt Sony, die Gruppe habe seine Server zeitgleich mit dem Diebstahl von Kundendaten angegriffen und eine Art "Bekennerdatei" auf dem Server des Multiplayer-Diensts Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) hinterlassen. Now even Intel's getting in on the act, but in a manner that sounds like it has more useful applications than the latest Sony TVs or Nintendo's 3DS. SATA-III-Fehler im MacBook Pro: Apple tauscht Geräte aus

One major complaint about iOS thus far has been the inability to apply software updates over the air. Car-service app Uber heads for NYC market
Uber is a service that connects an iOS app to a car booking network, so essentially you can use your iPhone to signal that you need a car, and then one shows up, complete with driver ready to take you to your destination. Apple has posted a new web page marking a soon-to-open new customer-feedback portal called "Apple Customer Pulse," and has begun sending out e-mail invitations for users to join, reports MacRumors. MIT Media Lab develops glasses-free HR3D, supports broad viewing angles (video)
We've already seen plenty of glasses-free 3D HDTVs and portable devices, but a promising new technology called HR3D (High-Rank 3D) has hit the prototype phase. Singular Software creates Presto for Final Cut Pro
Singular Software, best known for its PluralEyes video-synchronizing software, has leveraged that technology into a new product now available for Final Cut Pro called Presto. The program takes separately-shot videos of a slideshow presenter, along with the screen showing their slides and a copy of the original slideshow and marries them all together so that the presenter's image remains at the bottom-left of the screen, beside crisp, clear images of the slides, all in sync.

POLYRO humanoid robot can be built by you, looks more like K-9 than C-3PO
It may bear closer resemblance to an upright dog than a human (check out those ears!), but POLYRO here is the least frightening example of a do-it-yourself robot that we've seen to date. Gigwalk pays iPhone photographers to take pictures
A new startup called Gigwalk offers the opportunity for iPhone photographers to get paid for shooting nearby photos, while offering companies the ability to leverage crowd-sourced labor to record images locally on a global scale for little cost, reports TechCrunch. Barnes & Noble to release new e-reader, according to securities filing

iSuppli: Apple will snag 76% of app download market in 2011
Yesterday, iSuppli released new projections for the app download market. In those projections, iSuppli stated that Apple will snag 76% of the app download market in 2011. That market share will garner Apple $2.91 billion in revenue. iSuppli, of course, attributes Apple's app download market share to the popularity of its iOS devices.
However, as more Android phones flood the market, Apple's app download market share is expected to decline in future years. But that decline isn't enough to knock the Cupertino company out of the top spot. By 2014, Apple will still command 60% of the app download market, iSuppli estimated.

The Daily burns $10m in cash, still said in 'early days'
News Corp. during its results call on Wednesday revealed that it had chewed through $10 million in losses for The Daily's first quarter on the iPad. COO Chase Carey explained the cash outlay as the result of early development, noting that it was "real early days" for the tablet publication. Skype rumored making deals with Facebook, Google
Skype could face one of two major deals based on talk from a pair of sources. Facebook has supposedly considered either a joint venture with the VoIP pioneer or buying it outright, getting serious enough that its founder Mark Zuckerberg has been directly involved. Hearst and Apple come to terms on subscriptions
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Hearst and Apple have come to an agreement over iPad magazine subscriptions. According to the WSJ, Hearst will begin selling a range of its magazines through iTunes for US$1.99 an issue or US $19.99 for an annual subscription.
Three magazines will kick off the new subscription deal this July; Esquire, Popular Mechanics and O, The Oprah Magazine. Hearst also stated that it will begins selling newspaper subscriptions through the iPad later this year.

CRTC sets target of 5Mbps broadband for all Canadians by 2015
The FCC may be sticking with its target of 4Mbps broadband for everyone in the United States, but it looks like the CRTC thinks Canada can do one (megabit) better. The regulatory agency has just set its own target of 5Mbps download speeds and 1 Mbps upload speeds for all Canadians -- a goal that it says must be met by 2015. Those speeds, the agency notes, must be actual speeds not advertised ones, although it's not yet going as far as to declare internet access a basic service to ensure that happens. AppleCrate II parallel computer made from Apple IIe motherboards
In what's probably the coolest custom-built machine I've seen in ages, computer enthusiast Michael J. Mahon has built a parallel computer made out of 17 Apple IIe motherboards.
As you can see the "AppleCrate II" looks like a big crate of motherboards stacked on top of each other -- and that's pretty much what it is, along with some very clever networking and custom boot code.

Apple hires THX inventor to head up audio projects
Apple has reportedly hired the inventor of THX to head up all its audio projects, Leo Laporte said. Earlier today Laporte tweeted "I have it on good authority that Tomlinson Holman (of THX fame) is joining Apple to run audio. Major upgrade."
Holman is a legend in the audio industry. Among his achievements are winning an Academy Award for Technical Achievement in 2002 and inventing the first 10.2 surround sound system. However, Holman is best known for being the chief inventor of Lucasfilm's THX theater sound system. No word yet on what specific projects Holman will be working on at Apple, but I
