Apple testet MacBook Air mit A5-Prozessor

Laut Macotakara, einem japanischen Blog, der bereits einige Details des aktuellen iPads wahrheitsgemäß voraussagte, testet Apple momentan MacBook Airs mit A5-Prozessoren und Thunderbolt. Das nächste Update des MacBook Air soll voraussichtlich im Juni oder Juli erscheinen, ab dann wird auch Sandy Bridge verbaut werden. Natürlich müsste man dafür auch OS X umschreiben, um A5-Prozessoren zu unterstützen, und Entwickler müssten ihre Applikationen aktualisieren. Vermutlich wird Apple dazu auch Konvertierungs-Programme und andere Hilfsmittel bereit stellen. Laut der Quelle soll das Testgerät besser als erwartet funktioniert haben, dennoch bleiben Zweifel, ob der A5-Prozessor genug Leistung für ein MacBook Air bringt.[via]

Lawsuit allowed against Google, Facebook on mobile social

Wireless Ink on Friday won a ruling clearing it to sue Google and Facebook over creating mobile-optimized websites for social aims. The two web powerhouses had tried to dismiss the suit on the grounds that there wasn't a reasonable claims. Insiders: notebook growth still scaling back due to tablets

Reported industry estimates on Friday hinted at significantly lowered expectations for notebooks owing to the iPad and other tablets. Foxconn worker from Chengdu factory commits suicide

Transportation Department to propose mandatory black boxes in passenger vehicles?

A few years back, the Department of Transportation recommended that auto makers give car owners a heads up when they slip event data recorders -- also known as "black boxes" -- into new models. Brothers John and Sam Shahidi are living the classic American dream. The pair developed RunPee, a small iPhone application that lets you find the right time to take a bathroom break during a movie. Foxconn Chengdu worker commits suicide

A man working at Foxconn's plant in Chengdu, China has committed suicide, reports say. Although few other details are available, the person is remarked to have jumped off the roof of his apartment building. The fall is the 16th by a Foxconn worker since January 2010, and the 14th resulting in death. Smartphones threaten TV advertising

Hollywood is afraid of online video streaming, but a recent study suggests their biggest threat is the smartphone. IPG Media Lab and YuMe looked at people's behaviors when they watched TV. They discovered participants had the TV on, but were not always actively engaged. About 94% of the study's 48 participants were distracted during the 30 minutes of watching. The smartphone was the biggest culprit and accounted for 60% of these distractions. The researchers also compared DVRs with the smartphone and found that turning your head to look at your phone had a greater impact than fast forwarding through a commercial. Sony rumored cutting NGP specs to compete with 3DS, iPod

Sony might be stripping down the performance of the NGP to better take on the Nintendo 3DS and Apple's iPod touch. A rumor late Thursday from France's 01net claimed that developers had been told the NGP would have half the main RAM, 256MB, and a similar cut to 128MB of video RAM. Distimo: Android still struggling versus iOS in paid apps

A new Distimo study on Friday has revealed that Android is still much more difficult to survive for developers of paid apps than iOS. Research found that 79.3 percent of paid apps on Google's platform have been downloaded fewer than 100 times, and even 19.6 percent of free apps were just as marginal. Paid apps were also much less likely to be popular than in Apple's shop: where only two paid Android apps had passed 500,000 downloads worldwide for their whole lifespan, there were six iPhone apps that had managed that amount just in two months of US sales.

USA verabschieden "Todesstrafe"-Gesetz für Piraterie-Sites

Der Rechtsausschuss des US-Senats hat wie erwartet einen Gesetzentwurf verabschiedet, der eine Art "Todesstrafe" für Piraterie-Websites vorsieht. Der Protect IP Act ermöglicht es dem Justizministerium, Gerichtsbeschlüsse gegen Sitebetreiber durchzusetzen, die mutmaßlich das Urheberrecht verletzen - und ihre IP-Adressen zu löschen. The Nielsen Norman Group did a usability study on iPad apps not long after the device's debut in 2010. A year later, they've done a followup study to see how things fare today. While most apps have made big strides in overall usability in the year since the iPad's debut, many of the apps covered in the study still had suboptimal user interfaces that in many cases seem to sacrifice ease of use in favor of good looks. More details emerge about Apple's iCloud music service

Businessweek cites sources who claim Apple's new digital music service, which many expect to be called iCloud, will quickly scan a user's iTunes library and mirror those songs on the cloud. Users will then be able to stream and listen to those songs on any devices. Interestingly, the sources say that if a user's song isn't encoded in an acceptable quality, Apple will replace the lower-quality song with one that is encoded at a higher quality. OmniVision in its quarterly results call Thursday night dropped clues as to its possible iPhone production plans as well as a key console deal.
