Apple releases WWDC 2011 videos
WWDC 2011 session videos are now available in iTunes. These HD videos can be downloaded and viewed for your developing pleasure but require paid program credentials to access.
All material in the sessions remains under Apple's confidential information NDA.

PCI Express 4.0 und Konkurrenz für Thunderbolt
PCI Express 3.0 ist noch nicht richtig angekommen, da arbeitet die PCI Special Interest Group bereits an PCI Express 4.0. Eine Gruppe mit Mitarbeitern von AMD, Hewlett-Packard, IBM und Intel lotet bereits die technischen Möglichkeiten aus. Erstes Ergebnis: Zumindest die nächste Generation wird noch auf Kupferleitungen setzen.

Japan creates frankenstein pop idol, sells candy
Sure, Japan's had its fair share of holographic and robotic pop idols, but they always seem to wander a bit too far into the uncanny valley. Might an amalgam composite pop-star fare better? Nope, still creepy -- but at least its a new kind of creepy. Eguchi Aimi, a fictional idol girl created for a Glico candy ad, is comprised of the eyes, ears, nose, and other facial elements of girls from AKB48, a massive (over 50 members) all-female pop group from Tokyo. Aimi herself looks pretty convincing, but the way she never looks away from the camera makes our skin crawl

Powerslide Penguin für iPhone und iPad zu haben
Chillingo und Entwickler Cobra Mobile haben ein neues Gelegenheitsspiel namens Powerslide Penguin in den App Store gebracht. Das Spiel wird in zwei unterschiedlichen Versionen feilgeboten, einer für Apples Handhelds und einer für Apples Tablets.

Study finds Macs account for 11 percent of corporate computers, Windows XP dominates
After 27 years of existence, the Mac may finally be getting some respect in corporations. According to a study by research firm Forrester, Macs have jumped from 9.1% of all computers in enterprises in April, 2010 to 11% in March of 2011. The study looked at 400,000 computers from 2,500 companies that accessed the Forrester.com website.
Why the big leap in acceptance? Forrester's Ben Gray noted that some companies are yielding to pressure from employees who want to use their own machines at work. This trend is referred to as the "consumerization" of the enterprise, and Gray mentioned that "Empowered workers attracted to BYO [bring your own] device programs are quickly coming to expect Mac and iOS

Google Sites simplifies iOS and Android viewing with automatic mobile rendering
Do you use Google Sites to publish to the web? The search giant just added automatic mobile rendering to make your website more mobile-friendly when viewed on an iOS 3.0 or Android 2.2+ device. A new setting to "Automatically adjust site for mobile phones" can be activated in the site management page, at which point pages designed for desktop viewing will be displayed in a much simpler web format, so readers won't need to pinch-to-zoom just to see a page's content. Hacker pleads guilty to role in AT&T iPad user data theft
A 26-year-old man from San Francisco, Daniel Spitler, has plead guilty to charges of identity theft and a conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to computers, according to the Wall Street Journal. Spitler, along with Andrew Auernheimer, was arrested in January for creating software used to attack AT&T servers in June 2010 and steal the email addresses of iPad owners. Auernheimer is in the middle of plea negotiations; Spitler could face up to five years in prison on each charge, and will be sentenced on September 28th.

Twitter may introduce promoted tweets in feeds
New leaks Thursday have hinted Twitter was stepping up the level of advertising in its feeds. Along with its existing promoted trends, the social site is also looking at introducing promoted tweets that would slip into regular streams, not just special searches. The FT was told the ads would be pushed up even if they were hours old.

Apple posts Mac OS X 10.6.8, Leopard security updates
Apple has posted Mac OS X 10.6.8, what may be the final major update of Snow Leopard. One of the key features of the code is in fact preparation of the Mac App Store for Mac OS X Lion, which will launch sometime in July. The update is also designed to close several security holes, scrub "known variants" of Mac Defender, and improve VPN reliability as well as support for IPv6 networking.

Briefly: Sonnet outs Transposer, Enterprise License App
Sonnet Technologies has released a new universal 2.5-inch SSD to 3.5-inch drive tray adapter. Called the Transposer, the new device secures the smaller SSD drive to a heat-sinking aluminum frame, allowing for installation in any 3.5-inch drive tray. The Transposer is compatible with 3GBps and 6GBps SATA drives. All connections touch a pass-through circuit board, bypassing the need for a bridge chip which can often lead to a loss in data transfer speeds. Mac OS X 10.6.8 update now available
It looks like Apple's getting another fix in before Lion slinks on to the scene. Mac OS X 10.6.8 is now available for download, and brings with it a number of "general operating system fixes," including further support for IPv6, improved VPN reliability, and removal of known variants of Mac Defender. It also promises to fix a glitch that has Preview randomly shutting down, and will get the App Store ready to roar for when Lion lands on the scene. We're getting it going on our laptop at home. Archos zeigt Android-3.1-Tablets

Scoble talks rich Nanosys LCD tech, iPad 3 Retina Displays
Nanosys in a fresh set of tours, one with Robert Scoble, has shown a new display technology that could dramatically improve the color accuracy of LCDs, particularly in mobile. A quantum dot film layer, made of iridium phosphide, eliminates the bias towards blue on usual LED backlighting and expands the color range by as much as 50 percent by shifting more of the emphasis to red and green. The approach has a print-like process and, along with its passive nature, means it won't raise the price of a display or take away from the battery life.

FTC confirms Apple clear to bid on Nortel patents
The FTC on Thursday gave the go-ahead to Apple participating in a Nortel patent auction. Confirming recent rumors, it determined that Apple's bids wouldn't pose a competitive threat. Concerns had existed that Apple might over-aggressively pursue lawsuits with the patents in tow, particularly against Android phone makers.

Dutch parliament passes strict new law regulating cookies -- the non-edible variety
Well, it's certainly been an interesting month for those interested in all things technology-related in the Netherlands. News: Hacker pleads guilty to AT&T iPad data breach
Daniel Spitler, one of the hackers responsible for the exposure of email addresses and SIM ICC-ID numbers for 114,000 iPad 3G users last June, has pleaded guilty to one charge of conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to computers and one count of identity theft. Reuters reports that Spitler made his plea before U.S. District Judge Susan Wigenton in Newark, New Jersey federal court, and that each count carries a maximum sentence of up to five years…

Hands on with BubCap: The Home button cover for iDevices
Recently, Rob Mitchell of Paperclip Robot asked me to try out a new product called BubCap. It's a sticker you place onto your iPhone, iPod, or iPad that covers the Home Button, making it harder to click. It's available three levels of rigidify and does its job well.
Why would you want to do this? There are several compelling use-cases. For example, Paperclip Robot sells many BupCaps to parents who want prevent toddlers from exiting a certain app and wandering over to Daddy's e-mail account or Mommy's home finance program. The covering material is stiff enough to limit toddler access without hindering adult use.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings joins Facebook's Board of Directors
News that Netflix's CEO Reed Hastings is joining the Board of Directors for Facebook should make for an interesting note in the next movie, but beyond that it's unclear what it means for either company. Hastings successfully navigated Netflix through the process of going public which many assume will be a next step for the social media giant, so his experience could come in handy, and also serves on the board of Microsoft, which owns a stake in Facebook. Viacom sues Cablevision over claimed iPad streaming rights
Viacom sued Cablevision in a Manhattan court on Thursday over claims that the Cablevision iPad app was violating its broadcast rights. The Comedy Central owner claimed the tablet app was breaking terms that restricted showing Viacom content only on cable TV. The studio wanted both a ban on the iPad streaming as well as $2 million for every purported breach and other possible damages.

comScore: iPad is 89% of tablet data traffic worldwide
The iPad represents the vast majority of Internet traffic from tablets, comScore found Thursday. Worldwide, Apple's tablet made up over 89 percent of use on average during this past May. Android made up almost all of the remaining 11 percent, with the BlackBerry PlayBook possibly accounting for some share in Canada and the US.

Apple enlarges 'app store' cease-and-desist campaign
Apple is targeting multiple organizations in its bid to claim the "app store" trademark, reports say. In addition to pursuing Amahi, the company has turned its attention to The PC App Store, which describes itself as "an information source about software applications to make your PC do the things that you want it to do." Archos leaps into Android 3.1 tablets with 9th-gen 80, 101
Archos took its turn at entering the full Android tablet category Thursday with the formal unveiling of its ninth-generation slates. The eight-inch and 10-inch 80 G9 and 101 G9 will both run Android 3.1 from the start and are unique in depending on spinning hard drives rather than flash. Either uses Seagate's Momentus Thin drives to fit as much as 250GB of storage.

iOS 5 legal disclaimer lists new third-party mapping companies
A recent discovery in the legal disclaimer section of iOS 5 suggests Apple may be looking beyond Google Maps in future versions of the mobile OS. The legal section references a variety of mapping companies in its map data section, including CoreLogic, Getchee, Localeze and Urban Mapping. Most of these new services provide local point-of-interest information, demographics and traffic data. One notable company also included on this list is Tom Tom whose name needs no explanation.

Pointy styluses (stylii?) are a no-go because they don't provide enough contact with the screen. Google tells Auntie that your fingers register on capacitive screens because they distort the screen's electrostatic field. A pointy stylus with such a small tip does not.

HP expands AirPrint support to eight more LaserJets
HP is distributing a new firmware update which substantially augments the number of AirPrint-compatible printers. Eight more LaserJet models have been added; these include the P1102w and P1606dn, as well as six Pro models: the CP1025nw, M1212nf, M1213nf, M1214nfh, M1216nfh and M1217nfw. Prior to today only five LaserJets supported AirPrint, all of which were Pro devices.

FTC on verge of formally launching Google antitrust case
The FTC will soon formally subpoena Google in a large antitrust investigation, insiders uncovered Thursday morning. Requests for information should go out in the next several days, first to Google and then to its partners. The investigation outlined at the WSJ would determine whether Google's search business was illegally steering ads and users to its platforms while denying rivals a fair chance.

Angling for a new Android 3.1 tablet, are ya? If so, Archos has a new pair emerging from Paris today, the 80 G9 and 101 G9. Predictably, the biggest differentiator between the two is the screen size, with the former offering an 8-inch panel with a 1024 x 768 screen resolution and the latter stepping up to a 10.1-incher (1280 x 800). Both of 'em are proudly using Seagate's 7mm Momentus Thin in order to scale to 250GB, but of course, only time will tell how a power-hungry HDD will do in tablet form factor.

Apple's lithium-polymer battery purchases hindering other manufacturers
Apple supposedly has a lock on the touch panel market and now it seems the Cupertino company is doing the same thing in the Lithium-polymer battery market. According to Digitimes, Apple has bought up most of the available supply of Lithium-polymer batteries used in notebook computers and mobile devices. This is causing other manufacturers like HP and Acer to scramble to find new suppliers.

Japan's Double Research & Development Co. is showing off the Amenbo, a new input device that doesn't waste a single finger. LCD shipments hint Apple moving 14.4m iPads in summer
An investment note from CLSA on Thursday made the prediction that Apple would see its iPad shipments soar to 14.4 million in the summer. Understanding from internal checks that 4.8 million of the 5.38 million 9.7-inch LCDs shipped in May would be headed to Apple, he tripled the figure to reach an amount for an entire quarter. The figure would be significantly above the 10 million to 12 million of the market consensus and about 50 percent more than the roughly eight million many expect for the spring.

T-Mobile now home to 1 million iPhones
When talking to 9 to 5 Mac, a T-Mobile spokesperson offered up a tidbit of information that suggests the #4 wireless carrier, which does not sell the popular Apple smartphone, is home to over one million iPhones. Most of the devices are older iPhone models, though a fair amount of customers have reportedly trimmed down their T-mobile SIM to fit in the microSIM slot of the iPhone 4.

Nevada prepares itself for the imminent rise of driverless cars
Driverless cars are still a way's away from hitting the mainstream, but when they do, the glorious state of Nevada will be ready for 'em. This week, the state passed a new law that will require its Department of Transportation to "adopt regulations authorizing the operation of autonomous vehicles on highways within the State of Nevada." More specifically, the DOT will have to cook up a set of safety standards for self-driving vehicles, and designate specific areas in which they can be tested. Invisible drivers immediately hailed the decision as a watershed victory in their ongoing struggle for civil rights.

Earlier this month, TUAW's Samuel Gibbs introduced a lot of new readers to CloudApp as one of his continuing series of Daily Mac Apps. If you've become smitten with CloudApp on your Mac, or sending screenshots to your development partners through the CloudApp web app, then you'll be absolutely in love with Stratus (free) -- it brings CloudApp to your iPhone and iPad.

Hitachi G-Technology G-Connect: Mehr WiFi Festplatten braucht die Welt

Die neue G-Connect Festplatte macht weiter im Trend der WiFi Platten. Mit 500GB lässt sich die Platte über Gigabit Ethernet als WiFi Hotspot nutzen, und kann auch sonst als WiFi-Festplatte nutzen. Natürlich gibt es neben DLNA auch gleich eine iPhone und iPad App dazu und ein paar Sicherheitsfunktionen für private Ordner. Google code reveals inner Circles, a social secret weapon?
Nothing livens the day like a blurry screen grab of some Javascript, especially when it hints at the ghostly form of a social networking tool that doesn't officially exist. iOS devices popular on surveyed restaurant Wi-Fi networks
Meraki is a networking company that installs Wi-Fi networks in places like Starbucks and Burger King. They company looked at the devices that connect to its network and discovered the top device is the iPhone.
Unlike many metrics, this number is not based on a small sampling. Meraki has a network that reaches 40 million users in 140 countries around the world. The iPhone accounts for 32% of the devices connected to this vast network. It is followed by Windows machines (23%) and Mac OS X (13%). The iPod touch and Android are tied at 11% and the iPad grabs a surprisingly small 4%.

US ISPs close to colluding with MPAA, RIAA on 3-strike rules
American Internet service providers were reported late Wednesday as near giving into pressure from the MPAA and RIAA into adopting a graduated response system to alleged piracy. AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, and others are believed to be near deals that could be made public in July that would toughen responses with each successive discovery. The beta firmware has a set of new "Map Data" disclaimers, separate from those belonging to Google. Apple squeezing PC rivals trying to use lith-poly batteries
Apple's heavy use of lithium-polymer batteries in MacBooks is making it difficult for other notebook makers to get supply of their own, battery suppliers claimed Thursday. The Mac maker has supposedly secured so much supply that companies hoping to get into ultraportable notebooks in earnest, such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, and HP, are scrambling to find alternate sources. We were strolling around the Metropolitan Pavilion, enjoying the sights and sounds of Digital Experience, when, lo and behold, we spotted a pair of unfamiliar laptops gracing the thick black tablecloth at the Samsung booth. What you see above is just one member, the 11.6-inch model to be specific, of the as yet unannounced Series 3 line. These budget friendly lappies are anything but cheap looking or feeling. The entire lineup has followed in the footsteps of the Series 9, opting for soft brushed finishes that are, at the very least, metal-esque. In fact, we didn't believe the images until a video just surfaced showing Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop, foolishly asking a crowd of people to "put away their cameras" for the unveiling of something "super confidential," codenamed "Sea Ray." Naturally, a few people ignored the plea for "no pictures please" and, indeed, leaked the new device out to the blogosphere. It's Nokia's first Windows Phone. I actually played Tiny Tower for the first time back at GDC this year -- the guys at NimbleBit kindly showed me an early version of it while they were in the middle of designing the game. Foursquare makes permanent check-in deal with AmEx
Foursquare Labs, the makers of the popular social networking and geo-location entertainment smartphone app Foursquare, has announced a national deal with American Express. OnLive and Juniper team up on cloud-based services for enterprise

"CNBC Titans" Steve Jobs biography airs Thursday
CNBC will air an unauthorized biography of Steve Jobs on its "CNBC Titans" show this Thursday. The season premiere of the Titans show will explore "the undisputed king of Silicon Valley for the better part of three decades."
Being an unauthorized documentary, there's probably not that much new information on Jobs that people can't find elsewhere. However, any show about the man who brought us the Mac, iPod, and iPhone is sure to be interesting -- at least if you're a tech geek like me.

PCI Express group crafting 32Gbps rival to Thunderbolt
The PCI Special Interest Group has started a plan to develop a variant on PCI Express 3.0 that would challenge the Thunderbolt format from Apple and Intel. Its as yet unnamed format would be more than three times faster at 32Gbps, and eight billion transfers per second, with the same peak four lanes of data at distances of up to 10 feet. It too would carry power on copper wires, up to as much as 20W, and would have a flatter cable than the small but round Thunderbolt wire.

Business news cable network CNBC will kick off their season premiere of "CNBC Titans" with an unauthorized biography of Apple's Steve Jobs, AppleInsider reports. Apple removes pro-violence Palestinian app
Apple has dropped the app ThirdIntifada from the App Store following complaints that it encouraged violence against Israel and violated developer guidelines "by being offensive to large groups of people," according to Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr. T-Mobile carrying 1m unlocked iPhones, working on micro SIMs
T-Mobile on Wednesday night revealed that there were more than one million unlocked iPhones on its network. Most were iPhone 3GS or earlier models due to the regular SIM card slots. Chrome 14 blocks unencrypted scripts on secure sites
Google appears to have revamped the security features in Chrome 14, an update to the company's browser that is still in beta development. The build currently blocks secure sites from using unencrypted scripts on pages that are supposed to be protected via HTTPS protocols. Tim Cook spotted at China Mobile's headquarters
Apple's acting CEO Tim Cook was spotted at the headquarters of China Mobile today, lending credence to recent rumors that Apple is in talks to bring the iPhone to the carrier. China Mobile is the largest mobile phone operator in the world, with over 600 million subscribers, so bringing the iPhone to the carrier is seen as an important step for Apple's growth in the Asian market.

iPad display stand adds Apple Store charm
This is cute. The iPad 2 display dock is a new product by a company called New PC Gadgets that's basically a dock for your iPad 2 that looks just like the ones holding the devices in Apple Stores. Sure, it'll hold your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad 2 with panache and allow you to use it at an angle, but more importantly, it looks just like the real thing! You, too, can pretend you live in an Apple Store, but without all of the employees and customers around.
The stand is $74.95, which is obviously pricy for a display dock of any kind, much less one with as little functionality as this one. But, and we're repeating ourselves here, it looks like an Apple Store stand. That's worth it, right?

Judge "likely" to deny Apple's bid to halt Amazon's "appstore" name
At a hearing in Oakland, California today, U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton said she will "probably" deny Apple's motion to halt Amazon's use of "app store" in its Android software development program and Android application store. Viacom, Time Warner attempt to settle iPad streaming lawsuit
Viacom and Time Warner are reportedly attempting to privately settle their ongoing legal battle over content streaming on Apple's iPad and similar devices. DeNA bringing Infinity Blade X to Japan's Mobage platform
DeNA's been on the iOS hunt for about a year now -- I saw them at GDC Online last fall asking developers to create games for their Mobage mobile platform in Japan, and then they outright purchased popular iOS developer ngmoco not long after that. Now they've put together plans to bring another big iOS game to the Mobage platform -- along with Epic Games and developers Chair Entertainment, DeNA will be bringing a version of the popular iOS game, called Infinity Blade X to Japan.

PopCap Games to be acquired by unnamed buyer
Popular casual game-maker PopCap Games, known for its hits such as Plants Vs Zombies, Bejeweled and Zuma, is to be acquired by an as-yet-unnamed buyer for $1 billion or more, TechCrunch is reporting. Judge Phyllis Hamilton at a Wednesday court hearing cast doubt on Apple's ability to win its lawsuit against Amazon over the Amazon Appstore name. DisplayPort 1.2 gets active cable support
VESA, the body that oversees the DisplayPort standard, has extended that standard to support active cables. Active cables can allow runs of up to 100 feet, five times greater than the maximum length of a passive cable. Hulu takes on Morgan Stanley for sale, Yahoo not involved
The recent surprise buyout offer for Hulu grew serious late Wednesday after CNBC host Julia Boorstin stated that Hulu had taken on Morgan Stanley and Guggenheim to field offers. Anti-trust complaint against Apple filed in India
Apple's practice of selecting one or two "exclusive" carriers in a country to sell the iPhone -- at least for a period following the launch -- has come under scrutiny in India, where a complaint has been filed with that country's Competition Commission, The Wall Street Journal reports. Not allowing all compatible carriers equal access to the popular phone immediately gives those who have it an unfair market advantage and is anti-competitive, the complaint alleges.

New Apple Store planned in El Paso
ifoAppleStore says that Apple's retail team is bringing a new location to El Paso, Texas, right on the border to Mexico down there. The store will sit on the ground floor of the local Cielo Vista Mall, just three miles from the border, where Mexican customers make up 16% of retail sales in the city itself. This is an interesting choice -- there's another mall that's marketing itself as a more upscale destination nearby, but apparently Apple wants to open this store before waiting for that place to open in 2012.
