Ngmoco hires Ben Cousins, creates Ngmoco Sweden
Ngmoco has picked up former EA developer Ben Cousins, the man behind much of that company's free-to-play services at the EAsy division. He will establish a new studio under ngmoco called ngmoco Sweden, which will create games and content using ngmoco's (and parent company DeNA's) services and platforms.
At EA, Cousins was instrumental in setting up the free-to-play shooter Battlefield Heroes, as well as the more hardcore spinoff, Battlefield Play4Free, so it's likely that in his new position at EA, he'll be heading up some free-to-play projects more tailored to a traditional gaming audience than ngmoco's current social

Vizio Tablet gets detailed, we go hands-on (video)
Way back in January at CES, we managed to sneak in a little bit of hands-on time with the Vizio tablet, the TV manufacturer's straightforwardly-name foray into the ever-popular space. The tablet runs Gingerbread at present, though Vizio has said that it's willing to make the leap over to the tablet-optimized Honeycomb, as soon as that operating system is deemed sufficiently stable by the company. BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.6 update brings Flash 10.3 and AIR 2.7 to PlayBook
Nah, it ain't the update that'll bring a standalone email client to your BlackBerry PlayBook, but at least it's some positive news in an otherwise gloomy arena surrounding RIM. Version 1.0.6 of the BlackBerry Tablet OS was just cut loose today, bringing support for Adobe's Flash 10.3 and AIR 2.7 software. AMD resigns from BAPCo consortium, denounces SYSmark 2012 benchmark
It's not uncommon for a company to make a public endorsement from time to time, but AMD today drafted a press release to announce that it's not endorsing a product -- BAPCo's SYSmark 2012 benchmark -- going so far as to drop out of the non-profit org to drive its point home. AMD claims that it attempted to work with BAPCo to focus testing on real-world usage, rather than traditional benchmarks that don't necessarily represent how we use computers today. Nigel Dessau, AMD's CMO, explains the decision on AMD's blog:

Analyst expects iCloud to attract 150 million iPhone users
A survey conducted by RBC Capital Markets suggests more than 150 million iPhone users may be ready to take advantage of Apple's iCloud services. Of the 1500 current iPhone owners polled in the RBC survey, 76 percent of respondents indicated they intend to use iCloud. Analysts appear to have extrapolated the larger total based on the estimated number of iPhone users overall.

Nexus S hacked and tweaked to slaughter benchmarks, reality be damned
It's always a good idea to take benchmarks with a grain of salt -- their synthetic tests don't always match up with real-world performance. But, we wouldn't blame you if your wrote them off completely after spying these results from Android Community forum member Simms22. Simms took his Nexus S, blessed it with a little Cyanogen Mod 7 pixie dust, overclocked it to 1.544GHz, and made a few other tweaks for good measure. The results? Mac OS X Lion clean install may need Snow Leopard disc
Apple chief Steve Jobs in a reported message to a Mac user claimed that Mac OS X Lion might need a Snow Leopard disc for a clean install. On those systems that don't ship with Lion media, he said a user can "can clean install Snow Leopaard [sic] first." He didn't explicitly rule out the option of starting from scratch with Lion for the MacRumors reader but implied it might not always be supported.

Apple recommends Mac OS X 10.6.8 for Final Cut Pro X
Shortly after Apple formally introduced Final Cut Pro X, the company posted a note on its support site urging users to update their systems to Mac OS X 10.6.8 when running the new video editing software. The latest Snow Leopard release, v10.6.7, is listed as a minimum requirement, however the v10.6.8 build is currently still in beta development.

Leica rolls out M9-P rangefinder for pro photographers
Leica on Tuesday introduced an uncommon camera tailored to the pro side of its audience. Compared to the original M9, the M9-P has a scratch-resistant and also anti-reflective sapphire coating on the LCD to protect it outside. The iconic red Leica logo has also been pulled off to reduce distractions and make it less of a target for thieves.

LogMeIn goes disk -- and saves my weekend
Ages ago, we posted about LogMeIn's new file management and transfer capability. It wasn't until this weekend that it sunk in how utterly brilliant this feature is.
Look at me. I'm a parent to a teenager. (Yes, there's proof.) When visiting Fort Collins over the weekend, disaster struck. I'd copied over the new "9 Lives of Chloe Whatsherface" to the iPad but I'd forgotten to transfer that all-essential "Teen Wolf".

Carnegie Mellon researchers develop world's smallest biological fuel cell
Cars and other vehicles may be the first thing that springs to mind at the mention of fuel cells, but the technology can of course also be used for plenty of other devices big and small, and a team of researchers at Carnegie Mellon University are now looking to take them to a few new places that haven't been possible so far. To that end, they've developed what they claim is the world's smallest biological fuel cell, which is the size of a single human hair and "generates energy from the metabolism of bacteria on thin gold plates in micro-manufactured channels." Microsoft upgrades SkyDrive, reminds us of its place in the cloud (video)
Microsoft is sending out a subtle reminder this week that, despite all of the fanfare surrounding its newly announced service, Apple isn't the only game in the cloud. Redmond has unveiled updates to SkyDrive, including speed boosts, a revamped UI, and improvements to photo viewing. The latest version of the almost four-year-old service has cut wait time on actions like clicking folders, from six to nine seconds down to 100 to 300 milliseconds. Analysts chime in on Apple's iPhone sales, educational promo
A number of analysts have released reports focusing on Apple's range of products. Peter Misek of Jefferies & Co. suggests component makers are already receiving orders for the next version of Apple's smartphone, which he calls the "iPhone 4S." The handset is said to be ready to begin mass production sometime in July, with 5 million to 10 million units finished by the end of September.

Sling sends some users offline with PRO-HD update, issues fix
"Having difficulty with your PRO-HD this week?" That announcement headlining the Slingbox Answers Forum sums it up: a software update pushed last week "caused some Slingbox PRO-HD models to appear unavailable for TV streaming" -- a fairly significant issue, considering TV streaming is what these things do. Impression 10 tablet claims to get near iPad specs for $350
Leader on Tuesday set out to thrust itself into the tablet field in earnest by launching the Impression 10. While running on an older 1GHz Samsung chip and using Android 2.2, it remains one of the few in its class to have a 9.7-inch, capacitive, IPS-based touchscreen. Apple, Nordic join Bluetooth's board of directors
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group on Tuesday marked unusual additions as it brought both Apple and Nordic Semiconductor to its board of directors. The move gave the two greater control over how the short-range wireless standard works. Apple would be there to help with "platform development" for technologies like Bluetooth 4.0 while Nordic would help refine sensor chips.

Wer gerade ein Understatement-Statement-Gadget sucht und dafür auch 2,88 Millionen Yen aka 25.000 Euro locker machen kann und will, sei der DuraVision FDH3601 von Eizo empfohlen: Eckig, grau und dezent von Plastefuß bis Oberkante. Und ein feines Bild sollte der 36,4-Zoll-LED-backlit-Monitor mit einer Auflösung von 4.096 mal 2.160 Pixeln auch haben. Eigentlich ist das Teil natürlich für Profis mit besonderen Ansprüchen gemacht, laut Eizo eignet sich der Trumm ganz besonders fürs Flulotsengeschäft.

Video App Demo: Meeting Spot
We spoke to Nilay Patel of Selligy at WWDC, and he was kind enough to show us Meeting Spot, an app for visitors in San Francisco attending events near Moscone Center. Selligy's backend technology sounds promising, as it goes beyond mere location-based data or simple keyword matches, and tries to bring you better information. In essence, they want you to get recommendations as though you had a resident there telling you all the cool, somewhat hidden places to check out. 1Password 3.6 adds Lion support, drops Leopard/PowerPCs
1Password 3.6 is out now with a plethora of changes. Most notably, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is now supported while OS X 10.5 Leopard and PowerPC support has been dropped.
David Chartier writes that the number of 1Password customers who are using Leopard or a PowerPC-based Mac has fallen into the single digits. Dropping Leopard/PowerPC support enables developers to shrink 1Password's size by 12 percent.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 hitting Sprint on June 24th, bring your own 4G

Sprint claims AT&T could boost capacity 6X without T-Mobile
Sprint chose an unusual strategy in its opposition to AT&T's proposed buyout of T-Mobile by offering a solution to AT&T's claimed spectrum crisis. An FCC filing (below) claimed AT&T could increase its network capacity 600 percent by 2015 simply by making better use of the network resources it has. Using its large resource of unused spectrum for 4G could improve capacity by 250 percent alone; introducing a mixed-size network with both large and small cells could boost it by 300 percent, Sprint argued.

Seesmic Twitter app drops BlackBerry support, RIM's frown sags even lower
The third-party app experience has always seemed like an afterthought for RIM. Lousy selection and a half-baked install process are just some of the issues plaguing BlackBerry owners and developers, but there's no blow stronger in the app world than when a dev drops support for a platform, after dedicating the resources necessary to bring a product to market in the first place. That's exactly what Seesmic has done with its popular social media app -- effective June 30th, the company will drop support for BlackBerry, "in order to focus development efforts on (its) most popular mobile platforms."

Schwaches Wachstum bei Halbleitern erwartet

Briefly: SquareTrade tests tablet durability, Yazsoft hiring
SquareTrade, an alternative warranty supplier for popular electronics, has posted a new video that compares the damage inflicted when dropping three popular tablets from waist height. The company tested the iPad 2, Motorola Xoom, and Samsung Galaxy, dropping each from waist height in succession. SquareTrade found that the iPad 2 and Xoom fared the worst of the three, while the lighter Samsung Galaxy survived with minimal screen damage. All three of the devices still ran after the drops; however, the glass damage on each made touching potentially dangerous.

Final Cut Pro X woes include App Store issues, support gaps
The Mac App Store is actively blocking some Mac Pro users from downloading Final Cut Pro X, according to complaints. One person notes that his two-year-old Mac Pro is being blocked based on system requirements, even though it has a 2.8GHz quad-core Xeon processor and 6GB of RAM. The weak link may be video, in this case an ATI Radeon HD 2600 card.

Senior iOS product manager John Herbold leaves Apple
A senior iOS product manager at Apple, John Herbold, has left the company to become a product VP at a company called HealthTeacher. According to the latter firm Herbold played a "key role" in developing and launching iCloud, and led efforts in developing and marketing iCloud's Photo Stream image sync technology. Prior to those efforts Herbold was a senior product manager on MobileMe, and was involved in the development of web and iOS apps as well as services.

76% of iPhone users will adopt iCloud
A survey by RBC Capital Markets states the obvious: a majority of iPhone owners will use Apple's new free iCloud service when it launches this fall.
According to the survey, 76% of iPhone owners will use the free iCloud service and another 30% will use the US$25 monthly iTunes Match service. iMessage may be as popular as iCloud with 73% of iPhone users looking forward to using iOS-specific messaging service.
This high rate of adoption is not surprising. Who wouldn't use a free service that is bundled into the OS and makes life easier by seamlessly syncing information across devices?

USB-IF releases extensions to USB video class 1.1, offloading compression is a go
For those unaware, a USB video class describes a device that's capable of streaming video -- you know, things like webcams, camcorders, TV tuners and even still-image cameras. For the longest time, you needed to rely on your machine to do the grunt work associated with encoding video, but new extensions to the USB video class 1.1 have enabled those very devices to support H.264. Firefox 5 for Mac is available, brings updated UI and new privacy feature
Firefox 5 has landed and is now available to the public. The latest version of the popular web browser includes over 1,000 improvements, the most notable of which is a new Do Not Track privacy feature. This feature is found in the preferences and lets you easily opt-out of online tracking found on some websites.
Other new features include support for CSS animations, improved HTML 5 support and a new Add-ON SDK for web developers. The familiar Awesome bar sits at the top of the browser along with App tabs for common apps and Panorama tabs that can be organized into groups.

The iPhone 4 is now the most popular camera on Flickr, with a caveat. More on that in a minute. The smartphone's 5-megapixel shooter has finally surpassed the Nikon D90 as the top camera on the photo hosting and sharing service. It's been a slow and steady rise for the iPhone 4 since its debut in June 2010. The cameraphone now sits above the powerhouse D90, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi and the EOS Rebel T1i.

LG Electronics has partnered with Memjet to produce the Machjet JPP6010N, which they claim is the world's fastest A4-size color desktop printer. The Machjet is capable of up to 60 ppm speed at 1600x800 dpi resolution, comparable to color laser printers. The key component is Memjet's ink handling technology, which puts 70,000 nozzles on a single printhead. This enables resolution rivaling color laser printers but with a fraction of the energy use. Apple's retail improvement and expansion continues in both Hawaii and Florida. The Ala Moana store in Hawaii is slated for a complete overhaul starting soon. The retail outlet will be moving several doors down to a temporary location that will house the Apple Store until construction on its permanent home is completed. The project will cost US$250,000 but it's money well spent as the Ala Moana store is located in one of the top U.S. malls for foot traffic and per-purchase totals.

MacBook Air could hit 48 percent of MacBooks in 2011
The MacBook Air could account for 48 percent of Apple's MacBook sales by the end of 2011, according to a Gleacher & Company estimate. Analyst Doug Freedman notes that while the Air accounted for only 8 percent of Apple notebook sales in 2008 and 9 percent in 2009, its share jumped to 17 percent in 2010. Apple's iOS 5 now tops at HTML5 speed test
Last April, Microsoft posted a demo showing the then-experimental Windows Phone Mango and its Internet Explorer 9 Mobile boasting a significantly higher score on a custom-made HTML5 test than either Android or iPhone. New AirPort Extreme shows at FCC, gets part numbers
Apple's plans for new AirPort hardware were cemented Tuesday after an FCC filing showed a new AirPort Extreme station. Known just as the A1408, few details are available beyond that it would have a 3X3 antenna layout, likely to get 450Mbps peak speeds. Taiwan suppliers' iPhone 4 orders drop before new model
New leaks Tuesday morning hinted at Apple ramping down production of the iPhone 4 ahead of the future model. PCB (circuit board) suppliers were told to cut their orders by about 10 percent for the spring. Olympus June 30 event to unveil E-PM1, E-PL3, E-P3 cameras
Olympus has quietly sent out invitations to a special event in Taiwan on June 30 that should bring out three new cameras. Along with the E-PM1, the camera builder is expected to introduce the E-PL3, a replacement for the E-PL2 that would add a tilting LCD, as well as an E-P3 that would keep the built-in flash and build quality of the E-P2. Their signature trick is expected to be much faster autofocus that would not only compete with Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds cameras but some DSLRs.

Apple hat die Time Capsule im amerikanischen Appel Store aktualisiert. Das Update ist bisher aber nur auf der amerikanischen Apple Seite einzusehen. Dem ersten optischen Eindruck nach hat sich äußerlich nicht viel verändert. Die Time Capsule steht nun mit 2TB und 3TB Kapazität zur Verfügung, nicht mehr nur in 1TB und 2TB. Die Time Capsule arbeitet per WiFi mit allen Macs in einem Netzwerk zusammen, die dann ihre Time Machine-Sicherungen automatisch und drahtlos auf die Time Capsule übertragen können.
Dateien auf der Festplatte lassen sich von allen Macs und PCs im Netzwerk betrachten und editieren. Interessant ist auch die Funktion, dass auf der Platte enthaltenes Videomaterial über das Netzwerk gestreamt werden kann.

Diversion may not look like much, but it makes up for any shortage in graphical quality (yes, the characters do look that goofy) with a solid bunch of gameplay that's surprisingly fun despite the simple premise. The pitch here is "a platformer on rails," so you play as a 3D character who's always running forward through a world, and it's just up to you to jump at the right times. Again, that sounds simple, but it's surprisingly interesting with lots of strange jumps to make and figure out across over 100 levels.

Um der Geschichte einen Extra-Twist zu geben, gibt es auch noch einen Brief, in dem Connery vermeintlich Steve Jobs in recht groben Worten erklärt, dass er F*** James Bond sei und mitnichten für Apple werben wolle. Unsere US-Kollegen haben Nokias erstes MeeGo Handy N9 aka Lankku schon in den Händen und haben - im Sinne des finnischen Konzerns - Erfreuliches zu berichten. Das Gerät liegt gut in der Hand, der AMOLED-Bildschirm ist crisp und farbsatt, aber vor allem scheint Nokia der lange überfällige UI-Sprung gelungen zu sein: Die Harmattan-Oberfläche auf MeeGo 1.2 sorgt demnach für ein verblüffend flüssiges und flottes Navigieren durchs intuitiv gemachte Menu. Mobile ad company Flurry has released a new analysis on its official blog stating that customers are making the transition lately from using the mobile web to spending more of their daily time in mobile apps. In the early days of smartphone prominence (and by "early days," we mean about three years ago), the main feature on mobile phones was the web. You could check email, look up web pages, or browse the web on your smartphone, and that's how most people used them.

Neue Mac Pro und Mac mini Ende Juli?

Confirmed: Verizon to end unlimited data plans next month
Verizon today made good on its promise to eliminate the "unlimited" data plan for smartphones like the iPhone 4, announcing on All Things D that the offer would end in July, to be replaced with tiered usage. The report quotes enthusiast site Droid Life as saying the new plans will be in effect as of July 7th. The $30 per month charge for unlimited data will then be capped at 2GB.

Leak: lntel Ivy Bridge moved to March 2012 due to iPad
Intel's decision to move its Ivy Bridge platform to March 2012 was supported by a rumor late Monday that suggested the iPad may have played a role. It was to have started production in November this year but moved it to March or later in the wake of not just the 6 series chipset bug but notebook PC sales slumps owing to the iPad and other tablets, Digitimes said. The combination reportedly led Intel to "slow down its pace and re-organize its lineup" with the four-month span.

Nokia N9 official: MeeGo, NFC, button-free
Nokia at its Singapore event unveiled its most anticipated phone in years through the N9. The just-leaked design is the first MeeGo smartphone and centers on a rare, truly buttonless design: swipe gestures control switching apps from a pane-based interface and even include an iOS 5-style swipe to launch apps from individual notifications. Nokia's N9 official: a plastic slab of MeeGo coming later this year
Stephen Elop said that Nokia would unveil its first MeeGo device this year, and he just made good on his word with the N9 (also known as Lankku). Dropbox security bug temporarily allowed logins without authentication
Earlier today, a code update to Dropbox introduced a bug that temporarily allowed access to users' accounts and files without authentication via the company's web interface. For approximately four hours, from the time that Dropbox made the changes until the service's developers were able to correct the error, user accounts were accessible by merely typing in the email address associated with the account.

Hulu adheres to Apple's revised in-app subscription rules, others to fall in line?
A mere eleven days have passed since Apple relaxed its in-app subscription rules, and now All Things D has stumbled upon screenshots of the first major subscription program to comply. A forthcoming update to the Hulu Plus iOS app will nix all references that previously pointed towards Hulu's own website for signing up new users, allowing Hulu to skirt around implementing Apple's in-app subscription mechanism (and the thirty percent cut that goes along with it). Samsung denies being in talks with Apple
The Apple/Samsung legal feud continues. This week a US district judge suggested to the two companies that they should try to settle their patent infringement suits out of court, citing the companies' close business relationships. Apple's and its legal council seemed to agree and Apple's lawyer told the judge that executives "at the highest levels" of two companies were actively meeting to work things out. However, Samsung denies those talks are even happening.

MacBook Air could sport new Intel ULV processors
The rumored revision of the MacBook Air, which is expected to go on sale by the end of July, could sport Intel's new ULV chipsets, according to Cnet. "ULV" stands for "ultra-low voltage" -- something that is very important for ultra-slim laptops like the MacBook Air.

Intel plans exascale computing by 2018, wants to make petaflops passé
Sure, Fujitsu has a right to be proud of its K supercomputer -- performing over 8 petaflops with just under 70,000 Venus CPUs is nothing to sneeze at. Nuance buys Noterize, removes it from App Store
Back in March, voice software company Nuance bought the source code for an iOS note-taking app called Noterize, but the change wasn't noticed until recently, when the Noterize app was removed from the iTunes App Store, All Things D reports. Intel has quietly begun shipping the faster ultra-low voltage processors in the Sandy Bridge family that may be destined for Apple. The 1.7GHz Core i5 2557M, the similarly clocked Core i7 2637M, and the 1.8GHz Core i7 2677M should all be reaching notebook manufacturers. An email sent from Apple to a MobileMe member reveals some details about Apple's upcoming storage allocation in iCloud. When users sign up for a free iCloud account they will receive 5 GB of cloud storage. However, when users near their 5 GB limit they'll receive an email from Apple like the one this MobileMe member received today, as MacRumors reported. The email reveals what happens if you hit your 5 GB limit.

Five ways for iOS developers to deal with Apple's new subscription guidelines

1Password for Mac updated to v3.6, adds Firefox 5 support
AgileBits, the developers of popular password repository and manager 1Password for Mac, have updated the program to v3.6 to add support for Firefox 5, Fluid 1.0, the new configuration used by Dropbox 1.2.4, and add support for the forthcoming Lion (Mac OS X 10.7). The new release also drops support for Leopard (OS X 10.5) and Firefox 3, so users of such older browsers (along with Camino 2 or Flock) will need to stay with v3.5.9.

Mac Pro may get special processor, Mac mini price may drop
