23-Inch NEC MultiSync EX231Wp makes desktop displays a little bit greener
If you remember last year's EX231W (note the lack of "p") then you pretty much know all you need to about the company's latest business-class 23-incher, the EX231Wp. It's got the same 14.6mm bezel, 250-nit brightness, 25,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, and 1920 x 1080 resolution. It even kept the pair of sensors for measuring ambient light and detecting meatbags sitting in front of it, which allow the screen to adjust its brightness and conserve energy. Really, the only big difference is that NEC has managed to trim the power consumption from an already respectable 31W to just 27W

Mophie launches juice pack air for iPhone 4
Mophie has released a new juice pack air, built for the iPhone 4. Like other air models the battery case is designed primarily to be thin. It has a soft rubber finish for grip and shock protection, and provides access to top ports, along with a removable bottom section for docking. Its lithium polymer battery is rated at 1500mAh and should offer an additional six hours of 3G talk time, 36 hours of audio playback, or nine hours of video.

Bungie releases free iOS app
Game developer Bungie (the folks behind the Halo series, originally scheduled for release on Mac but also the game that eventually became the keystone of Microsoft's game console) has released an official iPhone app, just in time for the company's 20th anniversary. Bungie Mobile is available for free on the App Store, and allows you to browse through your and other players' Halo information, see official Bungie news and just generally enjoy the heck out of one of the best gaming developers around.
Additionally, when you sign in to the app with a Bungie account, you can get blue flames for your helmet in Halo: Reach, a special graphical effect previously reserved only for Bungie employees. Good deal.

Shocker! Gamer behavior is actually quite predictable
Isn't it curious how you always crack open a beer before settling in for some GTA? Or how you tend to put an anxious hand over your wallet when logging onto PSN? No soldier, it is not curious. Photo service Lockerz intros first iPhone app
Photo sharing service Lockerz, formerly known as Plixi, has launched its first app for the iPhone and iPod touch. Lockerz distinguishes itself from other services by assigning "PTZ" (points) to certain actions on its network, such as signing in or uploading images. Points earned are then usable as a discount when shopping for certain brands.

Nintendo's Iwata talks about Wii U's place in the living room
Nintendo took some inspiration from the TV remote for its Wii controller, and it apparently thinks its new Wii U controller could well be the "TV remote of the future." That's just one tidbit from All Things D's sitdown with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who also talked more broadly about the Wii U's new role in the living room. CPT grafts 3D display into iPad as proof of concept
Chinese display manufacturer CPT is showing off what appears to be an iPad 2 retrofitted with a 3D screen. The company has created the 3D display as a proof of concept to show what technology could be incorporated into a device like the next generation iPad. Google launches homepage shortcuts for iOS, mobile devices
Google has released a new homepage shortcut feature for mobile devices at today's Inside Search event in San Francisco. It's available to iOS and Android customers and offers quick access to information on restaurants, coffee shops, bars and more, based on the user's location.

Apple payments to Nokia estimated at $137.6M per quarter
A Deutsche Bank analyst, Kai Korschelt, has devised a more precise estimate of how much a new patent deal with Nokia may cost Apple. Korschelt's numbers assume a 1 percent royalty on all iPhones sold through the first quarter, which is in excess of 110 million units; they also assume an average selling price of $550. With that considered, Apple's initial lump-sum payment could be worth €420 million, or about $608 million US.

Android hits 45% of UK smartphones, stalled in US by iPhone
Android has grown to represent nearly half of smartphones sold in the UK but is no longer gaining ground in the US, Kantar Worldpanel said in a rare gauge of British market share. Google's platform grew 35.1 percent from year to year to reach 44.9 percent of all smartphones sold in the country as of mid-May. Nokia in the meantime saw its own share drop 21.4 percent from year to year to hit 10.6 percent.

Apple: Samsung is harassing us with its iPhone 5 and iPad 3 request
Apple is not happy with Samsung's latest legal request to view prototype versions of the iPad 3 and the iPhone 5. The Cupertino company recently filed a response in which it called Samsung "the copyist" and claimed the Korean company is trying to harass it with these unreasonable demands.

Garmin to purchase Navigon, plans to complete acquisition by late July
News of Garmin's plans to acquire Navigon leaked out earlier this month, but we now have official word that the GPS giant will bring the smaller German company under its wing beginning in late July. Pending regulatory approval, the deal would have Navigon, one of the largest GPS brands in Europe, functioning as a subsidiary of Garmin, which has a much stronger presence in North America. Google adds search by image and voice, grows mobile search
Google at a special event on Tuesday updated both its desktop and mobile searches to speed it up and get away from typing. Desktop users running Chrome now get the option of speaking searches from any Google search box. The step helps find things where the spelling is a problem or where a multi-step search would be faster.

Adobe has updated its line of Photoshop Touch applications with camera support and enhanced Photoshop CS5.5 interaction. The three utilities, Eazel, Color Lava, and Nav, each provide a unique method for interacting with Photoshop. Hatsuden-Nabe thermoelectric cookpot keeps your iPhone battery charged
It will be difficult to charge your iPhone after the zombie apocalypse destroys the power grid, but a new product from TES NewEnergy Corporation can make topping off your battery as easy as heating up a can of SpaghettiO's over an open fire.
The company has created the Hatsuden-Nabe, a US$278 cooking pan with a built-in USB port and a thermoelectric device to turn wasted heat into power. As the company notes, the heat of a wood campfire could reach over 900°F, but water requires only 212°F to boil so a lot of the extra heat is either retained in the pot or escapes to the atmosphere, wasted. Final Cut Pro X due on Mac App Store next week?
Final Cut Pro X could arrive at the Mac App Store next week, a Japanese news site claims to have heard. In April, Apple said the software would come to the Mac App Store in June at a price of $299, but the company has been unusually quiet since. Garmin buys Navigon to get Android, iPhone GPS edge
Garmin on Tuesday confirmed earlier rumors and bought Navigon. The takeover of the German GPS designer is meant both to boost Garmin's core in-car navigation but is also aimed at bolstering Garmin's position in smartphones. Apple appears to be dropping AirPort branding for Wi-Fi
Since 1999, when Steve Jobs introduced the iBook as the first portable computer with Wi-Fi capabilities, Apple has used the term AirPort to refer to 802.11 wireless connectivity. The rest of the world knows this technology by the name Wi-Fi, and it appears that with the upcoming release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, Apple will be changing references to wireless networking from "AirPort" to "Wi-Fi" across the system.
The change resolves a common issue for Mac neophytes, who often search in vain for Wi-Fi controls on their new Macs only to find something confusingly called AirPort. Google announces Search by Image, Search by Voice for desktop
Google's done a ton of talking about search at its Inside Search event today, and two of the biggest new developments are on the desktop. It's just announced that Android-style Search by Voice is headed to desktop web browsers, and that it will be joined by a new Search by Image feature. To use that latter, you simply drag and drop an image or cut and paste an image URL in the search box, and Google tries its best to recognize it and deliver matching results -- including identifying the location in a vacation photo, for instance. Voice search is rolling out today, while Search by Image should be available over the next few days (Chrome or a Firefox extension will be required).

Retail chief Ron Johnson leaves Apple for J.C. Penney
Apple's Senior Vice President of Retail Operations, Ron Johnson, is leaving to become President and eventually CEO of J.C. Penney. Johnson will assume this role November 1, 2011 and will join J.C. Penney's board of directors on August 1.

HTC Desire tries to catch Gingerbread, can't keep up
After months attempting to bring the Desire up to speed with Android 2.3, HTC is throwing in the towel, and it doesn't have much more than a comments section full of disappointed handset owners to show for it. Apple payment to Nokia could be worth hundreds of millions
Before paying royalties, the one-time payment Apple will make in its settlement with Nokia could be worth "several hundred million," estimates UBS analyst Maynard Um. Die Jungs vom Intelligent Mechatronics Lab der Boston University haben ein ferngesteuertes Fluggerät namens Batcopter ausgetüftelt, das die Interaktion und die Koordination in Fledermausschwärmen untersuchen soll. Dazu segelt der Batcopter recht unbeholfen im Fledermausrevier umher, während drei High-Speed-Infrarot-Kameras das Geschehen vom Boden aus beobachten. Die Forscher interessiert insbesondere, wie die Flugtiere es schaffen, einander auszuweichen, weil sie genau dies autonomen Flugbots beibringen wollen. Arris' cable technology teases us with 4.5Gbps download speeds
Think your cable connection's fast? Arris thinks it could be a lot faster. At today's NCTA Cable Show in Chicago, the company will demo a new system that can support download speeds of 4.5Gbps, and upload rates of 575Mbps. To achieve this, Arris devoted more of its DOCSIS 3.0 cable channels to broadband (128 downstream, 24 upstream), sourced through a C4 cable module (pictured on the left). Samsung attempting to 'harass' in legal dispute, says Apple
A Samsung motion to see the iPad 3 and the iPhone 5 is an "improper attempt to harass Apple by demanding production of extremely sensitive trade secrets," Apple says in recently-published court documents. The Samsung initiative was a direct response to an expedited discovery request by Apple, which demanded access to Samsung products not yet released in the US at the time, such as the Galaxy S II. AMD launches A-series chips with 10.5-hour battery life
AMD on Tuesday formally launched its Fusion-based A-series chips and detailed their performance. The 32 nanometer chips make the expected leap in integrated graphics, which can have 400 visual effects cores and compete with some mainstream dedicated chips yet sit inside the processor itself. A move to a 32 nanometer manufacturing process not only keeps the chips relatively small at 228mm2 but can lead to as much as a 50 percent boost in battery life: AMD has promised as much as 10.5 hours.

New MacBook Air models to arrive late June?
A report from Taiwan's Economic Daily newspaper claims Apple is preparing to ship 380,000 new MacBook Air units along with 80,000 old models this month. The report cites industry sources with knowledge of Apple's production plans. This echoes an earlier report from Wall Street analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Apple's annual Back to School promotion for Macs -- which could start this week -- will not include a free iPod, claims 9to5Mac. AT&T has told customers that newly unlocked US iPhone 4s didn't mean it would be unlocking existing iPhones. Although it has had the option of unlocking other phones, the Apple devices couldn't be unlocked "at this time." New York Times, OpinionLab sue Lodsys in preemptive strikes
Lodsys faced the consequences of its actions again Monday after the New York Times Company and OpinionLab both sued Lodsys (below) to invalidate its patents. Similar to the lawsuit from ForeSee, both of the plaintiffs are seeking a declaratory judgment that would at least absolve them of guilt and also nullify the patents themselves. TUAW's Daily iPhone App: Hercules - Curse of the Hydra
Hercules - Curse of the Hydra isn't exactly the most polished game I've seen on the iPhone -- it's a little clumsy, in fact, with some awkwardly placed controls and graphics that aren't quite as smooth as they could be. But it's still an interesting title and a solid effort from an indie studio, and I like its ambitious nature. There are 16 different levels of platforming and 3D action to fight through here, and while the game is still a little rough, it's cool to see a small studio take on a full title like this on iOS.

Comcast invites Skype into its cable boxes, mobile apps
The latest announcement at the 2011 Cable Show comes from the seemingly unlikely pairing of Comcast and Skype, who have arranged to enable video calls through the cable box. All it takes is a camera, adapter and 'specially-designed remote' to turn HDMI-equipped Comcast boxes into Skype-on-TV machines when they start trials in the next few months. Senior Comcast VP Cathy Avgiris tells the Seattle Times that video will max out at 720p to start but will be ugraded to 1080p eventually. I met up with Halfbrick Studios again last week at E3 here in Los Angeles (while most of you were watching the goings-on at WWDC in San Francisco). I got to play an updated version of Machine Gun Jetpack, the latest game in progress from the developers of Fruit Ninja and Monster Dash. I saw this game at GDC earlier this year, but it's improved greatly since then, with a lot of placeholder graphics and music replaced with the real thing.

Erfreulich daher, dass Nerdcore noch einmal auf Matt Groenings Apple-Broschüre von 1989 hinweist und sie spiegelt, nachdem sie an anderer Stelle verloren ging. Außergerichtliche Einigung zwischen Nokia und Apple

It's over. The patent battle between Nokia and Apple just ended not with an injunction, but with a press release citing a licensing agreement and Apple payments to Espoo. While the specifics of the agreement are confidential, Nokia does say that Apple will make a one-time payment followed by on-going royalties. TiVo announces plans for updated iPad app
Do you own a TiVo Premiere or Premiere XL box? And do you use the free Tivo iPad companion app as a remote control for that box? If so, you'll be happy to hear that TiVo has announced plans for an updated version of the app.
While the update isn't available on the App Store at this time, it adds new features for cable partners who provide customers with branded TiVo boxes. The app will add the cable operator's Video on Demand service into search and browse, so TiVo users can easily pull up VoD content for viewing.
The announcement, made today at the 2011 NCTA Cable Show in Chicago, did not provide details on when the new app version would be available.

Error page reveals iCloud may mirror MobileMe web services
Although Apple has positioned iCloud as the eventual replacement of MobileMe, the company has not yet spelled out exact details on any transitions or changes from the myriad services MobileMe offered, leading to some user anxiety over the fate of individual services -- from iWeb page hosting to photo galleries. A discovery by a reader at Mac Rumors seems to indicate that some of the MobileMe services are already being mirrored on iCloud servers.

Foxconn sees financial drop after plant explosion
Foxconn saw a large drop in revenue after the explosion at its Chendgu plant last month, according to Digitimes. Foxconn's May revenues dropped 2.14% month-over-month to US$6.95 billion. The revenue fall off was a direct result of the explosion, according to the company. The explosion that killed three workers on May 20 is thought to have been set off when aluminum dust used in a polishing process was accidentally ignited.

Motorola's latest wares are on display at the 2011 Cable Show (we suspect the sluggish cable boxes actually in service right now are rarely mentioned) including this "Live Streaming Device" aka Televation. Yesterday, we reported on a rumor that Apple's website creation software, iWeb, is about a year away from obsolescence, along with MobileMe's hosting of iWeb sites. HP sees big exec shakeup in wake of PC upheaval
HP on Monday night shook up its executive structure in the wake of its tough winter quarter. The company's Chief Adminstrative Officer Peter Bocian and Chief Information Officer Randy Mott are both leaving the company immediately. Executive VP and enterprise head Ann Livermore was leaving her position but joining HP's board of directors.

Report: iTunes costs $1.3 billon per year to run
An interesting report from asymco estimates that it costs Apple US$1.3 billion per year to run the iTunes store. That sum was reached by examining known numbers, like the total number of songs, movies, TV shows and apps that have been downloaded, plus the number of iTunes accounts and how much Apple has paid out to developers. Those figures were cross-referenced with the average price of songs and apps to get a monthly "content margin."
