100 Cameras in 1 latest non-game app to use Game Center on iOS
Back when Apple first introduced Game Center, one of the first big questions was if apps that weren't actually games could use the service to share achievements and even leaderboards from user to user. Since then, there have been a few examples of this poking around, but this is probably the most blatant: a new app called 100 Cameras in 1 offers not only over 100 Instagram style "effects" for your iPhone 4's camera, but full Game Center integration as well. Exclusive: Barnes & Noble phasing out the Nook 3G, cites lack of bulk demand
Barnes & Noble may be selling millions of Nook products, but it's sounding like the 3G variant hasn't really done its part to help those figures. We've received hard evidence from within B&N that the Nook is being discontinued, with sales to seemingly continue until stock is exhausted. The outfit is encouraging retail partners to not send out any "bulk requests" for the Nook 3G, as there simply "will not be sufficient quantities to fulfill those orders." Of course, we're told that the company never actually received a huge amount of Nook 3G bulk orders to begin with, so maybe WiFi really is everywhere these days.

Report shows early glimpse at Creative Suite 6 features
"Independent sources" have confirmed information from an Adobe survey hinting at the features of Creative Suite 6, according to AppleInsider. Included are several new components, such as Maestro, which will allegedly let people "sync, store, share and review" projects across multiple computers and users. Users will be able to keep up to 100GB of material on Adobe servers, and send sketches to Maestro via the Ideas mobile app. Built-in format conversion should make it easier to share files.

Verizon dropping 150MB smartphone data plan
A leaked document shows Verizon's newly revised wireless data prices, Engadget reported on Monday. Compared to the old pricing scheme for smartphones and feature phones, the $15, 150MB monthly plan is no longer on offer, leaving only the pay-per-use option or a $30-per-month, unlimited data plan. Also changed is the data plan for feature phones, now priced at $10 for 75MB rather than the same for 25MB. The overage fee here is also changed from $0.20/MB to $10 for 75MB.

Microsoft slides hope to spook companies away from iPads
A recently uncovered presentation from Microsoft has revealed that the company has been encouraging its partners to scare enterprises away from the iPad. It argues that corporate buyers would get weaker enterprise security, app support and device variety. The pitch found by ZDNet is targeted at those with or without iPads and tries to get those companies with iPads to keep using Windows on tablets, either through a virtual desktop to "reduce risk" or by adding extra tablets.

Samsung hopes to overtake Apple in notebooks this year
Samsung is planning a major 60 percent spike in its notebook shipments in a bid to overtake Apple in the worldwide notebook arena, part suppliers said Monday. It had shipped 10 million portables in 2010 but hoped to move 16 million to 17 million this year. Both companies were nearly tied through the first nine months of 2010 and saw Apple move just 150,000 more systems, according to Digitimes' IDC numbers, or enough that Samsung was within striking distance.

iPad to come to India on January 28th
The iPad will be launching in India on January 28th, the Telegraph reports. Because Apple lacks online or retail stores in the country, people will primarily have to turn to authorized resellers to get the tablet, such as Imagine in Calcutta. Wi-Fi models should cost between 26,000 and 37,000 rupees, or about $569 and $810. 3G versions should sell for between 33,000 and 44,000 rupees, or roughly $723 and $964.

Tim Cook in NYT, says joining Apple was 'best decision I ever made'
The New York Times has written a nice profile of Tim Cook, who is once again sliding into the driver's seat at Apple while Steve Jobs takes medical leave. To hear the paper tell it, Cook is both a man well-prepared to fill Jobs' role if needed, and yet not exactly the creative visionary Jobs has become. While Jobs runs the company with a wide-ranging vision for products and how they're used, Cook is the details man -- a master of spreadsheets, factory dealings, supply chains and efficiency.

Dell Venue review
Yes, it's the Dell Venue, and no, you still can't buy one outside Hong Kong or South Korea just yet. All we can speculate is that this Android phone is facing the same manufacturing issues as its WP7 cousin, but hopefully we're wrong. Google, Mozilla post 'do not track' browser extensions
Mozilla and Google have taken the FTC's advice and give users a Do Not Track option when browsing. The former's Firefox and the latter's Chrome browsers will let users click a box that will then disable the browser's ability to track browsing history that is then used to send out targeted ads. Mozilla will take a header-based approach that its makers believe is more universal and clearer than cookies or blacklists. Users won't need to load ad networks and advertiser lists for this to work, either.

webOS tablet interface leak suggests new gesture controls, same old good looks
What, a full spec sheet for the Topaz not good enough for you? Fine, Pre Central has managed to dig up another little document from HP's 2010 archives, this one delving into tablet-specific UI elements in webOS. The first notable thing is the inclusion of more sophisticated gesture and tap controls, with double-tap, tap-and-hold, and even two-finger tap-and-drag actions serving some unspecified functions in the tablet version of the software. Verizon tweaking low-end data plans, using '3G' distinction to upcharge for LTE
Well, that didn't last very long at all: looks like Verizon is killing off its $15 150MB data plan for smartphones altogether, instead corralling folks into the $30 unlimited option. Of course, with the proliferation of data-hungry smartphone apps on Android (and soon, the iPhone), 250MB per month of usage is becoming less and less reasonable by the day, so we can't say we're terribly surprised. Meanwhile, the $9.99 25MB feature phone data option is getting a bump up to 75MB with $10 per 75MB overage, a slight drop from the 20 cent / MB overage that those customers deal

Google Cloud Print reaches Android, iOS
Google on Monday brought its Cloud Print plans to a wider audience today with its first mobile option. Android, iOS and other HTML5-capable phone platforms can now print common documents from Gmail or Google Docs to any printer associated with a Google account, whether or not it's on the local network. The option appears both in the usual drop-down menu but also direct links in e-mail.

Viber VIOP app for iPhone updated and improved
An update to Viber has hit the app store today. I was impressed with the original release of this free VOIP client when it came out early last month. I especially liked the voice quality, and the notifications. Since the review, Skype with video finally made it to the iPhone and attracted a lot of attention, but I still prefer the audio quality of Viber, and unlike Skype, it doesn't have to be running to get a call notification. Of course everyone you want to call must be running Viber, but that is the only requirement.

Chrome and Firefox adding new opt-out features to prevent third-party cookies from snooping on you
Ever been freaked out by an online ad that seemed to know you that little bit too well? It's the result of good old advertisers tracking your net-navigating habits and delivering targeted commercials to your eyeballs, but it can be prevented. Electric Mazda2 coming to Japan in 2012, no you can't drive it
Mazda has been toying with an electrified version of its Demio compact (known as the Mazda2 'round these parts) since at least last year, and now it's announcing plans to start some serious production of the 200 kilometer (125mile) range autos, putting them up for lease by spring of 2012. There are a couple of catches, though: these are only for the Japanese market and, if that weren't bad enough, they'll only be available for fleet sales. So, unless you're looking to buy a couple-dozen for Bob's Heavy Industries you're out of luck. For now, at least.

News: KT touts 2 million iPhones sold in South Korea
South Korean iPhone carrier KT has announced that it has sold more than two million of the devices since its November 2009 launch in the country. The Korea Times reports that two million iPhones were activated in South Korea as of January 20, and that 1.03 million were iPhone 4s, while 977,000 were iPhone 3GS units. South Korean iPhone sales reach 2 million
South Korean wireless carrier KT confirmed that it has sold over two million iPhones since the handset launched in the country a little over a year ago. After regulatory wrangling, the iPhone finally made its debut in late 2009 and various versions of the handset have been sold exclusively by KT. The iPhone 4 made its debut in September 2010 and KT broke the one million iPhones sold mark in October. According to the latest figures, over one in every 25 South Koreans own an iPhone and over 50% of these are iPhone 4s.

Fast Company ranks potential replacements for Jobs
Financial publication Fast Company has published a new ranking of possible replacements for Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The magazine notes that even if Jobs does return from his current medical leave, the company will eventually have to find a replacement. Sparrow for Mac coming to Mac App Store
The developers behind the up and coming Sparrow email client confirmed that version 1.0 is almost completed. A successful private beta trial is almost over and the last reported bugs are being fixed. Sparrow is on track to be submitted to the Mac App Store by the end of the week. Apple patent suggests multi-touch keyboards might be in the future
A new Apple patent uncovered by Macrumors showcases the work of FingerWorks, which Apple purchased in 2005. FingerWorks, best known now for being the base of today's gesture-recognition technology, produced the TouchStream multi-touch keyboard early last decade. Unofficial count has 100 iPad clones shown at CES, more soon
An unofficial tracker from Shawn Dubrovac has revealed the sheer extent to which companies leapt on the tablet market following the early success of the iPad. The list shows at least 100 tablets and crossover e-readers having shipped, including not just major entries such as the BlackBerry PlayBook and Motorola Xoom but also relative newcomers such as Enspert's Identity Tab line and Notion Ink Adam. Ticonderoga: Apple stock drop an investment opportunity
A fall in Apple stock price triggered by Steve Jobs' poor health is an opportunity for investors, says Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White. Robo-guitar shocker! Gibson opening Firebird X platform to third party developers, app store imminent
We've seen the future of guitars, and it's an app store. At least that's what Gibson would have us believe, as it announces that it's opening the Pure-Analog Engine and the whole Firebird X platform to third party devs. Didn't know it was a platform, did you? Thought that it was an over-priced guitar with features that we didn't need (and a headstock we didn't particularly care for)? Same here. Windows Phone 7 jailbreak devs 'genuinely excited' by Microsoft's roadmap
Microsoft's been playing it really cool with the nascent Windows Phone 7 hacker community so far, which is winning them friends in all sorts of important places -- not the least of which is the ChevronWP7 team itself. The first guys to split the platform open for homebrew apps were recently invited up to Redmond for a powwow with the guys in charge, and it seems the meetings were fruitful to say the least; though much of what they saw was under NDA, they say they're "genuinely excited" by what Microsoft has in the works. Mythical white iPhone 4 appears on AT&T's account management system
Like the sightings of Bigfoot, Elvis, and leprechauns, the white iPhone 4 has a life of its own. Mentions of it keep popping up, yet nobody really ever seems to get a picture that's more than a blur or a fantastic PhotoShopped fake.
The latest sighting emerged on BGR, where it was reported that two entries appeared in AT&T's Online Account Management system. One was for the little unicorn, the 16 GB White model, and the other was for the full-sized 32 GB unicorn.
The online account tool doesn't supply any information about when the bleached iPhone 4 will actually be found on store shelves. BGR conjectured that it might be just in time for iPhone users to jump to the white model, get locked

iPad high resolution display rumored for 3rd generation
According to IDC research manager Tom Mainelli, the iPad 3 and not the iPad 2 will be the lucky recipient of a high-resolution display. Previous rumors have repeatedly suggested the iPad 2 will sport a high-resolution "retina" display. Most of these rumors came from Asian sources and was cautiously repeated with skepticism that Apple could pack a retina display into the iPad 2 and keep the price competitive.

South Korean iPhone sales hit 2 million
Over 2 million iPhones have now been sold in South Korea, local carrier KT has announced. Various versions of the phone have been available in the country for little over a year. The iPhone 4 launched in the country on September 10th, and the 1 million mark was achieved a little over 10 days later.

Neue Patentanmeldung von Apple
MacRumors hat wieder einmal von einem neuen Apple-Patent erfahren. You may have heard that iPad or iPhone/iPod touch devices don't do Flash. It's been mentioned a few times, and it's clearly the feature Android device makers are targetting when trying to answer the question "Why should I buy your device instead of an iPad or iPhone/iPod touch?"

Ein Spionage-Diktiergerät in Standard-USB-Stickform. 2GB WAV-Files zeichnet er auf (4,5 Stunden) und lässt sich, der aufwendigen Produktarchitektur sei Dank, sofort an den Rechner anschließen, um die hochbrisanten Daten auf schwedische Server abzulegen. Report calls for iPad 2 production in Feb., iPhone 5 in May
Second-generation iPad production should begin in February, while the fifth-generation iPhone will start assembly in May, says China's Commercial Times. iPad production is only expected to begin with a "small pilot," which might once again put a crunch on early availability. Second-quarter shipments however are forecast to grow dramatically, potentially exceeding the quantity of first-gen devices delivered in the last quarter of 2010.

Leak shows NVIDIA Tegra 3 first with quad-core in tablets
NVIDIA may be first to have a shipping quad-core processor in a tablet. A new copy of the same slide that showed the Tegra 2 3D has listed the Tegra 3. The design would closely follow Qualcomm's own ambitions and see a 1.5GHz, quad-core design that would be more than twice as fast as any Tegra 2. BSON heard that triple the graphics power would be onboard to decode Blu-ray video and to power a 1920x1200 main display.

Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK was the winner of Apple's 10 billion App Store download contest. Apple countersues S3 Graphics in patent dispute
AppleInsider is reporting that Apple has countersued S3 Graphics after the company, a maker of graphics-visualization technologies for the notebook and desktop markets, originally sued Apple last June for patent infringement related to a number of Apple's devices, including the iPhone, iPod touch and MacBook computers. Ein Nokia-Tablet mit MeeGo?
Gut, es ist natürlich nur ein Foto, aber ein bisschen stutzig wird man schon, wenn man ein so ein Tablet-förmiges Gerät mit MeeGo und dickem Nokia-Logo sieht. Untypisch ist der zentrierte Schriftzug, der bei N97 und N900 an den Seiten zu finden ist. Ist es ein internes Testgerät oder ein Prototyp? Wahrscheinlich von beidem ein bisschen. Phase One today pushed the limits of medium format cameras on Monday by launching its new IQ series digital backs. The trio moves the baseline for resolution and starts at 40 megapixels for the IQ140, moving up to 60.5 megapixels for the IQ160 and an unprecedented 80 megapixels for the IQ180. I would say that this Canabalt-like game is good for kids (and it is), but I don't suppose there are too many kids around nowadays who remember the early days of Inspector Gadget like I did in my generation. We 80s babies can fondly look back on Gadget, Penny, Brain and the mysterious Dr. Claw with nostalgia, so while this one is more or less a licensed tie-in game, it's still good to see the old gang kicking around.

IDC: Auflösung von 2.048 x 1.536 für iPad 2 nicht machbar
In den letzten Wochen war aus der Gerüchteküche mehrfach zu hören, Apple werde die Auflösung des iPads erheblich erhöhen. We've seen some electronic devices that promise to cure migraines in the past, but NuPathe's Zelrix patch certainly seems to be among the most practical, and it's just gotten one step closer to the US market. HTC Arrive and Kyocera Echo bow for Sprint?
Okay, armchair sleuths, this one's for you -- we've got two very legit-looking logos here, but not a lot of proof. Our tipster tells us that both of these high-quality vector graphics are the names of upcoming devices for Sprint, with the HTC Arrive (née Ruby) allegedly an upcoming Windows Phone 7 device, while Kyocera Echo is apparently the retail name for the phone internally known as the Sanyo Orange. It just so happens that the trademark for "HTC Arrive" was registered the very same day we received this logo, so we think we're onto something here, but the truth of the matter is that all of these codenames are falling on virgin ears.

LG, Motorola, more sharing 'copied' Oracle code via Android
Further investigation by Florian Mueller has found that key Android phone manufacturers are sharing the allegedly copied Oracle code from Java. Online source code distributions for Motorola's Droid Pro and other Droid models, LG's Ally and Optimus models, and Samsung's Galaxy devices (including the Galaxy Tab) all have at least some of the code. The devices don't necessarily include the potentially patent infringing code in the on-device version, but their existence on the phone designers' respective sites may by itself be enough for legal trouble, Mueller said.
