Crapgadget CES, round five: iPhone 4 and iPad wed in unholy KIRF matrimony
Yes, this is what happens when the iPhone 4 and the iPad mingle in the back alleys of Shenzhen and bring mutant KIRF-y children to CES. The EYO T8100 is a dumbphone boasting a (likely resistive) 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, quad-band GSM radio, dual SIM slots, two megapixel rear camera (with flash), VGA front camera, analog TV tuner, Java support, and WiFi, all wrapped in a silver / black, white, or pink package. InfiniTV 4 USB CableCARD tuner hands-on
We ran into the Hammers from Ceton Corp at CES and they revealed their latest products to us; the InfiniTV 4 USB and the internal InfiniTV 6. The InfiniTV 6 is basically the six tuner version of the InfiniTV 4 that we like so much, what we don't like is that there's no mention of price or availability -- we'd guess $500 or $600 and sometime during the middle of 2011. Wireless Media Stick hands-on: stream your content to anything with a USB port
The Wireless Media Stick is an interesting little product that aims to bring media streaming to pretty much anything with a USB port. If the concept sounds familiar, that's because it kind of is -- we reviewed the Infinitec Infinite USB Memory Drive late last year. This USB stick has built-in WiFi, so you connect it to your network and can plug it into pretty much anything with a USB port that can read a mass storage device. Editorial: Windows on ARM is a big deal, but it's not enough to win at tablets
While "Windows runs on ARM now" is a really easy thing to say, it's an extremely complicated subject, fraught with industry drama, technical accomplishment, and a hint of Microsoft's vision for the future. Microsoft is saying loud and clear that x86 isn't enough (sorry, Intel and AMD), that current Windows form factors aren't sufficient (sorry, netbooks), and that it's still a nimble enough company to respond to changes in the market and consumer frustrations (sorry, Clippy). VideoEFx box transforms your 2D content into 3D (hands-on)
3DTV is "cool and all," but one of the biggest challenges to its adoption is a lack of substantial content. VideoEFx is a small company with a nondescript booth situated somewhere in the ginormous Las Vegas Convention Center, but what it's showing off is quite remarkable. Identity Tab coming to US, we go hands-on at CES

WSJ: Verizon iPhone due out near the end of January
Okay, so the general assumption at this point is that Tuesday's big Verizon announcement will be the oft-rumored CDMA iPhone. But as for when it comes out, well the Wall Street Journal is saying (by way of its long-standing sources) near the end of the month. Mad Catz rolls out Mac-compatible Tritton See2 series USB video cards, See2 Xtreme for Windows
It's been quite a while since Tritton last cropped up on our radar, but the company was acquired by Mad Catz last summer, and it's now announced a new range of Mac-compatible, 720p-supporting external video cards. That includes updated versions of its existing SEE2 UV150 external VGA video card and SEE2 XD300 Xpress Docking Station (with VGA, Ethernet, four USB ports, and mic and speaker ports), along with the all new SEE2 Xtreme UV250 external video card, which packs both VGA and DVI ports and supports resolutions up to 1920 x 1200, but is apparently only compatible with Windows. T-Pain stops by CES 2011 to plug patently ridiculous, amazing I Am T-Pain microphone (video)
It's Vegas, so it's not completely unsurprising to see folks like Lady Gaga and T-Pain stopping by unannounced. But seeing the latter over at a Jakks Pacific booth at CES? Windows Phone 7 using lots of 3G data while idle, even on WiFi?
Complaints seem to be growing among some users that Windows Phone 7 is consuming an abnormally plump quantity of data when you're not doing anything. Granted, there's lots of stuff on the platform that might need data continuously -- email accounts and live tiles, for example -- but folks are reporting consumption measuring in multiple megabytes per hour, which can add up pretty quickly: 2MB per hour over a month is nearly 1.5GB, which can be a bummer for anyone with a 2GB data plan. The real issue, though, is that at least some of the data seems to be ignoring available WiFi networks and choosing 3G instead, so there's no great way to definitively avoid the leak even when you're in the comf

HTC Evo's battery deflects a bullet, earns 'Life Saver' badge (video)
We knew the HTC EVO 4G was a pretty super phone, but we didn't know it was an actual superhero. A nightclub valet in Atlanta was recently the victim of two disgruntled patrons' wrath, falling in the middle of a five-shot bullet volley, but luckily for him, he had his EVO in his chest pocket. While the phone's glass shattered on impact, its battery did not and absorbed much of the impact of the one bullet intent on ridding him from this mortal coil. The fortunate chap is still with us, uninjured but stupefied by the event, and he promises he'll never buy another brand's phone again. See the video report after the break.

Sony DSC-TX100V and the rest of the Cyber-shot posse hands-on
Sony announced a heap of new Cyber-shot cameras earlier this week, and after spying the entire line posing Miss America-style at Sony's CES booth, we decided to go hands on. Microsoft suggests Windows Phone Live will get more Kin Studio-like features
Microsoft's Kin may have been a failure of spectacular proportions, but it did introduce a few interesting ideas -- namely, the Kin Studio web-backup service. Apple pulls VLC from the iTunes store
Looks like VLC's role as champion of open-source legal rights is no more -- rather than lawyer up, Apple's taken the easy way out, and simply removing the VLC media player from the App Store. Skullcandy is hitting CES with a characteristically bold claim: its new Fix in-ear headphones are touted as the first to never fall out of your ears, irrespective of the intensity of your physical activity. We've matched them up against the Yurbuds Ironman Series, a rather larger pair of in-ear speakers, which makes the exact same claim. Novatel Wireless 4G MiFi LTE and WiMAX hands-on
Novatel Wireless just keeps pumping out the MiFis, and this year's CES offerings didn't disappoint with both a WiMAX and an LTE version on offer. So first up is the Sprint WiMAX version of the MiFi that replaces the previous MiFi 2200 with a tenfold increase in speed -- of course there is an asterisk next to that figure -- an external electronic ink display for signal strength, battery, and number of connected devices, and the balance of the features pretty much jibe with what we've already seen in the past. Android 2.3 gets ported to the iPhone 3G, breaks hearts left and right
Android getting ported to the iPhone may be old news by now, but Android 2.3 (a.k.a. Gingerbread) getting ported to the iPhone? Well, that's something new, if entirely expected. Samsung made a lot of noise about its first-party Smart TV initiative yesterday, so we had to stop by and check things out -- especially that new WiFi-based RMC30D Smart Touch Remote, which comes bundled with all new 8000-series TVs and above. Kombinierter Micro-USB/HDMI-Anschluss noch dieses Jahr
Schon im September 2009 wurden die Pläne zur Verschmelzung des Micro-USB- und HDMI-Anschlusses bekannt. Logitech Revue hack brings Android Market, requires brute force
It's not exactly what we'd call a easy jailbreak, seeing as how it requires a soldering iron, a NAND format procedure, and a Logitech Revue that's never even been powered on, but it looks like it is possible to root a Google TV box after all. Garmin GTU 10 GPS locator hands-on
Among tons of generic GPS devices at its booth, Garmin had the new GTU 10 GPS locator out for the world to see on the CES floor. If you need a refresher, this little tracker connects to AT&T's network and and lets you keep tabs on anything you choose to hook it onto. The signage showed the compact locator on a dog collar, though there's also a carabiner attachment so you can attach it to pretty much anything. We spotted the tracking app running on a Galaxy Tab, so it looks like Android support is definitely on the table -- we're still in the dark on compatibility with other mobile operating systems. The Mac App Store is off to a great start, but it's not all sweetness and light. Users have been confused by how some third party apps bought elsewhere show as "installed" in the store UI whilst others don't -- and in fairness, it is confusingly inconsistent. Meanwhile, developers are struggling to deal with the lack of upgrade pricing, and what that means for their existing customers.

Die Scannermaus von LG tut haargenau das, was man erwartet - sie scannt und funktioniert gleichzeitig auch als Maus. Auf ihrer Unterseite beleuchten fünf LEDs das zu scannende Bild, gestartet wird der Vorgang einfach per Knopfdruck. Die Software - für Mac und Windows - lässt sich kinderleicht bedienen, JPEGs, TIFFs, PDFs und PNGs können in beliebige Social Networks exportiert und die Scanns weiter bearbeitet werden. Looked at your stash of USB 3.0 cables lately? Chances are that each and every one of 'em are three meters or shorter, and there's good reason for that. Signal degradation over long distances is a problem that the world at large has been dealing with since the early days of human life, but somehow or another, Icron Technologies has figured out how to bend physics. The company has just announced a partnership with Intersil Corporation, and the two are linking up in order to produce a 20 meter USB 3.0 cable. Logitech intros $30 Wireless Speaker Adapter for WiDi-enabled laptops
A WiDi adapter, but only for music? It's true. Up until now, Intel's Wireless Display technology has been marketed as a means for transmitting video wirelessly from a PC to an HDTV, but apparently it's good for audio, too. Logitech has chosen CES 2011 to launch the box you see above, the Wireless Speaker Adapter for Intel WiDi-enabled laptops. The idea is fairly simple: place the box near your sound system, and connect it up via a 3.5mm auxiliary jack or using standard analog RCA jacks. VLC aus App Store entfernt

Last year at Macworld 2010, I got to see the SHOWWX pico projector in action. Back then it was just a prototype, and the company was still shopping around the technology to try and get a unit into production. MicroVision has released the SHOWWX projector at a unit price of US$299. The iPhone 3G now does something not even all Android phones can claim: it runs Android's current version, 2.3 "Gingerbread." iDroid developer Nick Pack posted a video of a jailbroken iPhone 3G successfully running Android 2.3. Naturally the older iPhone was huffing and puffing a bit as it tried to run the latest Android interface, but to my eyes it looked like the iPhone 3G was at least running better than it initially was under iOS 4.2.

VLC app removed from App Store
Not long after a version of multi-format video player VLC hit the App Store, speculation swirled surrounding its possible removal because of licensing issues. A few months later, it appears that everyone's fears were true: VLC has been removed from the App Store.
Before anyone grabs a pitchfork and/or torch and starts marching toward Cupertino, it's worth noting that VLC's removal from the App Store has nothing to do with Apple's preferences. Rather, it's a direct result of one man's misguided crusade a man who, (perhaps) coincidentally, is an employee of Nokia, one of Apple's competitors in the mobile space.

Iogear GW3DKIT wireless 3D media kit banishes your components to the closet
We went hands-on with Iogear's wireless HD system last year at CES, and now we've managed to do the same with a prototype of the boutique brand's new GW3DKIT 3D wireless streamer. The kit consists of a 3D transmitter and receiver that each feature four HDMI inputs as well as one component, composite, VGA, and USB input. Each box also features one HDMI and USB output. Together the system is designed to stream full 1080p 60Hz HD video / 5.1 audio along with 3D content over WiFi (802.11n) from as far as 100 feet away with supposedly little latency or wireless interference. Toshiba outs Quantum Black panel 3D TVs, more for CES
Toshiba has introduced its latest line of 3D TVs led by the UL610 Cinema Series and the TL515 Series. The UL610 is available in 46-, 55- and 65-inch models and incorporate Toshibaís new CEVO Engine, a derivative of the Cell processor. In this application it delivers 2D to 3D content conversion and mitigates image cross-talk. Audessy processing is utilized to deliver optimal sound performance. Die neue Display-Technologie von Mirasol hat uns schon von Anfang an ziemlich Eindruck gemacht. Obwohl PocketBook USA eigentlich versprochen hatte, auf der CES das erste Produkt damit zu präsentieren, haben sie uns nun auf die CeBit vertröstet. Blieb also nur ein weiteres Referenz-Tablet von Qualcomm, was aber auch nicht schlecht ist und sich seit dem letzten Prototyp deutlich verbessert und den damals noch vorhandenen Gelbstich verloren hat. VLC für iOS aus App Store entfernt
Am 1. November berichteten wir darüber, dass VLC für iOS aus dem App Store verschwinden könne, die App Store-Richtlinien sind mit der VLC zugrunde liegenden GPL nicht vereinbar. Die GPL verlangt, dass ihr unterliegende Programme frei kopierbar sind. Jetzt hat Apple ernst gemacht und VLC aus dem App Store entfernt. Little Marauder challenges iCal with Caliander
A developer who was dissatisfied with iCal and some of the alternatives has created his own vision of how a personal calendar should work, named it Caliander and put it on the Mac App Store. It uses a refreshing "timeline" type interface that allows panning and zooming, a perceptual mode, faster event creation using plain English and a global keyboard shortcut to allow adding events while in other applications.

Samsung made a lot of noise about its first-party Smart TV initiative yesterday, so we had to stop by and check things out -- especially that new WiFi-based RMC30D Smart Touch Remote, which comes bundled with all new 8000-series TVs and above. (It also works with the 7000 series, but you have to buy it separately.) ProVue Development has announced a new database application aimed at spreadsheet users called Panorama Sheets that uses Panorama's technique of loading all operations into RAM, resulting in extraordinarily rapid sorting, analysis and data manipulation. Panorama Sheets uses a familiar spreadsheet interface, and data or results can be easily imported or exported to or from text files and spreadsheets, or printed in tabular format. Nintendo's just unveiled its best-case scenario figures for the 3DS' battery life, and compared with its predecessors, it ain't pretty. Control a car's interior via a dashboard-mounted iPad from Visteon
Visteon doesn't have the first idea for integrating an iPad into an automobile in some way, but it has arguably the most ambitious one so far.

We just made our way to the LG booth here at the Consumer Electronics Show and found this multifaceted gizmo that the company is dubbing the Scanner Mouse. Mistubishi's 92- and 155-inch screens are bigger, biggest
After hearing about Mitsubishi's 92-inch DLP we just had to get our eyes on it and sure enough, we spotted models lurking around CES, along with the 155-inch display made up of OLED panels. There's not much to say about the DLP that we didn't cover during our 3D roundup, it's just bigger, with other changes and details still TBA -- we're waiting for 'em to cross the 100-inch mark -- while the OLED seemed suited to its potential purpose of lighting up stadiums and other similar areas, with rather impressive viewing angles although the seams in the panels were quite apparent up close.

MSI Butterfly and Angelow all-in-one PC concepts, eyes-on
MSI's new tablets felt like prototypes, but the device pictured above is truly far out -- it's the MSI Butterfly, one of several whimsical concepts the company teased about a week ago. We actually ducked into MSI's booth right before it covered the whole display with a giant plexiglass box and got some reasonable snapshots, but nothing remotely resembling a proper hands-on, so you'll have to make do with the gallery below and whatever dreams may come.

GoDAP amplifies your mobile audio and provides optical output for iPhone 4
Most of the gadgets we're seeing here at CES 2011 this year aren't too big a surprise -- we set up meetings even before we walked into the convention center, and the surprise is in seeing the new gadgets we've only read about before. But the GoDAP was a surprise, found just by walking around the show floor and checking out the booths. It's made a Japanese company named VentureCraft, and it's a clip-on unit for the iPhone that not only works as a rechargeable battery, but also serves as a headphone amp, spiking up the output audio on your iPhone 3GS or 4.
The current model for the 3GS isn't quite as impressive as the new model -- it's just basically got a volume control (though the audio heard through headphones does sound really clear and loud). B

Samsung NX11 hands-on
It's always a shame we don't have more time to play with every gadget at monstrous trade shows, and that goes double for cameras. So while we can't give you more in-depth discussion on the image and video quality, we will say that Samsung's NX11's inclusion of the i-Function lens is a decided victory. For those who don't know, it's a special lens with a ring and i-Fn button you can use to manually adjust various settings (exposure, ISO, shutter speed, etc.), and it works like a charm. Looking at pictures of a picture-taking device is some form of awesome, right? Right.

Clear bullish on LTE trial results, says WiMAX is 'best for the customer' right now
Clearwire's talking more about some of the glorious numbers it's seeing as it drives around the greater Phoenix area testing its trial LTE network, and we think one specific quote pretty much sums it up: "this isn't your grandfather's LTE." When the Philips' 56-inch 21:9 3D TV was released in Europe with no US ship date in sight, darkness fell over our home theater world. We stopped by the iFrogz booth at this week's CES 2011 here in Las Vegas to see the company's line of cases and headphones for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. We also got to hear some interesting behind-the-scenes information about the business of selling accessories for Apple's devices. The best-selling case color of all time? We heard from multiple companies, including iFrogz, that you can always bet on black. But iFrogz' cases come in a bevy of colors -- "you need something to attract the eye," iFrogz told us. Verizon and Panasonic demo broadcast Full HD 3D at CES
Currently the only way to feed your 3DTV full HD 3D (1080p per eye) is to watch a Blu-ray disc, which is great and all unless you're a sports fan, than not so much. Seen at CES: iDevices through the years
We saw these displays over in the actual iLounge booth (they also have a deal to sponsor some of the iPhone-related displays here at CES), and thought you readers would enjoy a look. Basically iLounge went back and obtained a version of every single iDevice out there (with the exception of the two iPad models currently out), and mounted them all on the wall lined up from oldest to newest.
It's a pretty cool look at Apple's most recent history. BT 'Content Connect' lets ISPs charge content providers for high-speed video delivery
We haven't heard a ton of talk about net neutrality here at CES, but the issue has now cropped up in a fairly big way across the pond -- British Telecom's wholesale division has just rolled out a service it calls "Content Connect," which basically allows ISPs relying on BT's network to charge content providers like YouTube for high-speed delivery of video within the UK. That naturally means that anyone who doesn't pay will have to deal with slower video delivery, which would in a very real sense create a two-tier internet. Motu's popular 828mk3 audio interface has finally gone dual-platform, adding USB2 to the familiar Firewire (FW400) connections. Hands-on with Qualcomm's 30FPS mirasol, we talk tablets

UnityRemote brings a universal, customizable remote to iOS devices
Ever since Apple killed the Griffin IR remote on the original iPod I've been wanting to consolidate my iPod with a home theater remote. The iPhone seems perfect for this; with an infinitely variable canvas available, you could theoretically do anything with your remote.
The trouble is getting an IR signal to your components. The UnityRemote from Gear4 solves this problem by connecting your iPhone to a small cylindrical IR beamer via Bluetooth. Dish Network's Sling Receiver lives
Originally shown at CES last year, the Sling Receiver promises to bring HD content from your Sling enabled Dish Network box to another TV in your home, as well as the rest of the DVR's UI. What we hope is the big difference this year is that the device actually ships to Dish Network customers and brings the dream of multi-room viewing -- like the other satellite TV provider has. No word on exactly when it will be available or how much it'll cost, but for all those that are delaying upgrading to the ViP 922 because of the lack of TV2, you will finally be able to stop waiting.

Clamcase iPad keyboard case hands-on
The folks from Clamcase stopped by our trailer this afternoon with some of the first finished products to roll off the assembly lines, and while we didn't get to spend as much time as we would've liked, we got to take a ton of photos of this intriguing accessory that essentially converts your iPad into a netbook. In our few moments actually using the thing, we can say that it's got a sturdy build quality and a decent keyboard; although there's a fair amount of travel, it just feels a bit cheap. It's also a bit cramped, but as the company rep pointed out to us, it's as large as they could've made it without adding to the iPad's already large bezel. iPhone confirmed for Verizon event, Jobs likely to show
Verizon's January 11 event will indeed have the iPhone and could have Steve Jobs around for part of the gathering, a pair of leaks corroborated Friday night. The handset would be fundamentally similar to the iPhone 4 but run on the needed CDMA technology. Passive 3D seems to be the new home entertainment hotness at CES this year, but that doesn't mean the industry has given up on active shutter. ShopKeep releases iPad POS for retail
ShopKeep.com, a cloud-based POS developer that offers Windows and Mac based cash-register hardware and software, is launching a beta of a iPad-based POS system to compete directly with existing bulkier, more expensive touch-screen systems aimed at small retail businesses (such as bakeries, coffee shops or other outlets where there are fewer than 150 items for sale). The pilot program will debut at popular Grand Central Station coffee shop Joe in New York City on January 18th.

Audiovox to buy Klipsch, we can't help but worry
It's true. Audiovox, a relative no-name in terms of consumer end products in the music industry, has just signed a non-binding term sheet to purchase all of the shares of Klipsch Group and its worldwide subsidiaries. We're told that the transaction is subject to a number of contingencies, "including satisfactory completion of due diligence, negotiation and signing of definitive agreements and requisite approvals," but we can't imagine anything popping up to stop the inevitable. No hard financial terms were revealed, and there's no estimated closing date for the deal. Oddly enough, Klipsch was here at CES

MSI WindPad 100W and 100A tablets hit CES 2011, we go hands-on
The more things change, the more they stay the same at MSI, as the company's two tablets -- due to ship within three months -- still feel like early prototypes. MSI showed off both its Windows 7 and Android 10-inch slates at CES 2011, now known as the WindPad 100W and WindPad 100A, and both sport last-gen tablet specs. Despite pitching the Windows device as an Oak Trail device, the WindPad 100W's still got a 1.66GHz Atom Menlow Z530 CPU here, and Windows 7 is seriously laggy and unresponsive despite the presence of a 32GB SSD and 2GB of RAM. The Sling Player coming to the Google TV
Wrap your head around this one, you have your Google TV connected to your TV and your DVR, and now you'll soon be able to connect to a Sling Box in other room, house, city, country, and watch that content too. This Flash app optimized for Google TV was on display at CES and reminds us more of the Sling Player app on a portable than a Google TV app. No word on when it might be available or how much it'll cost -- you didn't think it'd be free did you? -- but it did seem to work pretty well in our short time with it.

Wall Street Journal confirms iPhone coming to Verizon
Rumors of the iPhone coming to Verizon are almost as old as the iPhone itself, and earlier today we heard about a Verizon event next week, cleverly timed for 11 AM on 1/1/11.
That set off speculation across the Internet, but we paid special attention to when the Wall Street Journal confirmed the rumor, citing "a person familiar with the matter." The WSJ has a solid history and isn't prone to confirming without good sources, so it seems a sure thing at this point.
While Apple has not been involved in this announcement (the WSJ says Apple declined to comment), many people have noted that Apple has generally not been involved in

Intel's next CPU refresh will include DirectX 11 graphics support
Tick, the CPU and GPU get integrated into the same 32nm die, tock, they both go down to 22nm with the latter gaining DirectX 11 support. Intel's only just unveiled its Sandy Bridge processors, but the next update to the company's desktop and laptop hardware has already gained an important detail. Mooly Eden, general manager for the PC Client Group, has disclosed the news that Ivy Bridge -- the die shrink of the Sandy Bridge microarchitecture -- will include DX 11 graphical capabilities when it arrives late in 2011. We're inclined to agree with Intel that DirectX 11 really wasn't a necessary implementation for Sandy Bridge given its humble gaming
