One of the great features of the Mac App Store is the notification system that tells you when there is an update to one of you apps. Ballmer: Kinect support for PCís on the horizon

Microsoft CEO has revealed that Microsoft plans to bring official support for its 8 million plus selling Kinect peripheral to Windows. In an the BBC interview footage (below), Ballmer states that Microsoft will make a formal announcement about the integration ìin a formal way in the right time.î An example of the Kinect hacked to work with Mac OS X has recently been posted by a developer highlighting the potential for the technology.

Viliv X7 and X10 Android tablets hands-on

Viliv had its new Android tablets on display for us to get our grubby hands on, and the company continues to impress us with its sleek designs and attractive feature sets. The X10's claim to fame is its monstrous 8300 mAh battery which should yield over ten hours of use even with its 10.2-inch display. What we saw was only a prototype, but it doesn't seem that the battery added any additional bulk to the svelte design. You know about Kno right? Yep, it's that giant dual-screen tablet up there that's meant for students, and while we had seen an early version of it and its single-screen brother about six months ago, we figured we'd take a closer look at the shipping versions here at CES. SQ Blaster Pro is a WiFi, Z-Wave, and IR blaster home automation powerhouse

We've seen plenty of IR blasters around the Engadget trailer but few, if any, include WiFi and Z-Wave home automation radios. But that's exactly what the boys over at Square Connect have planned as a followup to their existing SQ Blaster product. Panasonic took a break from its usual CES business this afternoon to host the inaugural directors' panel at the show (in conjunction with 20th Century Fox), where the unexpected trio of Oliver Stone, Michael Mann and Baz Luhrmann showed up to talk about technology in Hollywood, and Blu-ray in particular. You can't have all this 3D stuff happening on the home entertainment front without it trickling down to smartphones, right? Sharp's already planning to bring its autostereoscopic wares to US shores at some point during 2011 and today LG's busy showing off a prototype of its own, right here at CES. It's a 4.3-inch panel, pumping out glasses-free 3D (using the parallax barrier method) and is presently embedded in an enormous demo box, but the ultimate goal is to have it in media-centric handsets. Lady Gaga's Polaroid digital camera, printer, and glasses hands-on

Bad news, folks, Polaroid's GL20 camera glasses aren't wearable yet. The Haus of Gaga-designed Grey Label product is indeed coming out, but the prototype at the company's CES booth lacked the ability for the wearer to see anything out of it -- then again, it's not clear we're ever supposed to, even after its release later this year. The GL30 digital camera was also non-functional, so all we can say right now is it's a design great for making a big, conspicuous statement. We just got a chance to meet iRobot's AVA and talk to iRobot's CEO Colin Angle about his plans for this intriguing new bot. Just two days ago, we brought you word of a Texas Instruments powered pico projector by ViewSonic. We found the 0.9-pounder and snapped some pics of an (unfortunately) non-functioning unit. It features a 4-in-1 card reader, mini USB cable, and adapter for an included dongle that supports VGA and composite cables. With a 1280 x 800 WXGA resolution, the 200 lumen bulb is LED-based and has a lamp life of 20 to 30 thousand hours. Just a few days ago we told you how the U.S. Senate rules had been opened up to allow Macs into Senate offices with official permission. Well, it turns out that Macs are quite popular in the House as well. Our example: the newly named House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA). Pandora founder and chief strategy officer Tim Westergren just rolled up to our CES trailer in the new Mini Cooper Countryman with Mini Connected, which features integration with Pandora's iOS app when an IPhone is plugged in. Once you plug the phone in and switch to the app, Connected takes over and you navigate and control Pandora using the Mini's rotary jog dial -- BMW doesn't want you to mess with the phone while driving, so the iPhone essentially serves as a 3G modem. Filed under: Tablet PC Auf den Notion Ink Adam haben wir sehr lange gewartet. Das Display mit 10-Zoll PixelQi wurde ja schon auf der letzten CES angekündigt, und erst jetzt kann man es ernsthaft in den Händen halten. Die Hardware wirkt - auch wenn sie größtenteils aus Plastik ist - sehr solide, und ist mit HDMI und USB durchaus anschlussfreudig, und mit 1,5 Pfund auch durchaus leicht. ViewSonic's taking tablets to great new lows here at CES, calling its new 4.1-inch ViewPad 4 a "tablet device with smartphone functionality." Whatever the description, though, this is a pretty handsome, angular Froyo handset with an 800 x 480 resolution, 5 megapixel camera that can record 1080p video, a front-facing imager, 2GB of ROM, and either 512MB or 1GB of RAM. Apple opposes shareholder proposal for succession plan

Apple is opposing a shareholder measure asking for the company to adopt a CEO succession plan, text in the company's 2011 proxy statement reveals. "The Company recognizes that a highly talented and experienced management team, not just the CEO, is critical to Appleís success," part of the SEC filing reads. "Accordingly, the Board already implements many of the proposed actions and maintains a comprehensive succession plan throughout the organization. Verizon iPhone rumored to launch on February 3

Over the past few months, the rumors of a Verizon CDMA-based iPhone have reached a fever pitch. Now the folks over at BGR think that they've come up with the exact date that the fabled VZW iPhone will hit the streets -- February 3, 2011. Why the day after Groundhog Day? LG G-Slate makes its FCC debut?

Considering the size of the label here relative to the size of the device itself, this certainly seems like a tablet (rather than a phone) that hit the FCC's filing system this week from LG -- and when you add in the fact that it's got certification on T-Mobile's AWS 3G band, that pretty much seals the deal. RIM gives us PlayBook hands-on, alludes to sync with iPhone

We had the opportunity to try the BlackBerry PlayBook at CES on Friday and discovered that it may have sync with more than just the BlackBerry. A representative on the show floor told Electronista that there might be plans to sync some services with the iPhone or other platforms. Viliv X70 Windows 7 slate with Oak Trail hands-on

You may remember Viliv from last year's CES, but it's back again this year with a smattering new of tablets. The X70 Slate is powered by Intel's upcoming 1.5 GHz Oak Trail processor, and has a 7-inch 1024 x 600-resolution capacitive multitouch display. That new silicon is supposed to simultaneously speed up Windows 7 performance (both Starter and Home Premium are available), and improve battery life (they claim 6.5 hours, which is better than the Galaxy Tab). Verizon's 4G non-phones: MiFi, upgraded Galaxy Tab, more

The 10 LTE-aware devices Verizon launched at CES on Thursday included six non-phone devices, including a pair of firsts. Novatel's MiFi 4510L is its first LTE mobile router and makes a direct upgrade in speed that can reach about 5-12Mbps downstream and 2-5Mbps upstream in regular conditions. Bloomberg: Apple's net income rose 47 percent

Samsung shows off Google TV companion box and Blu-ray player

So, the word is that Samsung was planning on showing off Google TV at its presser, but switched things up at the last minute and stuck to its first party Smart TV offering. Are these next-generation iPhone drawings?

TW.Apple.pro has posted drawings of what's suggested to be the next-generation iPhone. There's little more here than sketches of iPhone parts, but they do seem to line up with images from a YouTube video of suspected "iPhone 5" parts. That video was recently pulled from YouTube at Apple's request, suggesting validity. One point of note is that the break in the external band that forms the antenna has been moved. We can only assume that means a new design will be in place on the next iPhone. We couldn't glean any other major revisions from these sketches, but you're welcome to take a crack at it. CES 2011: Notion In Adam Hands-On

Filed under: Tablet PC Auf den Notion Ink Adam haben wir sehr lange gewartet. Das Display mit 10-Zoll PixelQi wurde ja schon auf der letzten CES angekündigt, und erst jetzt kann man es ernsthaft in den Händen halten. Das Start-Up aus Indien hat aber dennoch ganze Arbeit geleistet. Die Hardware wirkt - auch wenn sie größtenteils aus Plastik ist - sehr solide, und ist mit HDMI und USB durchaus anschlussfreudig, und mit 1,5 Pfund auch durchaus leicht. Das PixelQi Display kommt mit einer Auflösung von 1024x600 und sieht selbst in vollem Sonnenlicht sehr gut aus. iHome's big announcement here at CES is the AirPlay-enabled iW1 wireless speakers, but the company also gave us a quick sneak peek at the iW2 and iW3, two new smaller systems that are due to be released sometime. Cricket offered us a chance at a deeper look and demo of its Muve music service this week at CES, and of course we just couldn't pass it up. Ask any real gamer about gaming on a touchscreen, and the first thing you'll hear is he or she lamenting over the lack of physical buttons. Ten One Design aims to remedy this legitimate complaint with its Fling joystick add-ons for the iPad. Tim Cook reaps $59 million after 2010 bonuses, stock grants

Apple COO Tim Cook pulled in $59.1 million in total compensation during 2010, including bonuses and stock options, official SEC filings show. A source described as "close to Apple" informs that the company is specifically blocking vacations between February 3rd and the 6th, according to Boy Genius Report. The stretch, lasting between a Thursday and a Sunday, is said to be off-limits to Apple workers in at least several parts of the US. It may not be universal however, meaning that a reported three-week blackout could well be in effect in some places.

We just saw how you can now add an Install Package Files option to the PS3 using some custom firmware, but that darn hacker George "Geohot" Hotz has taken it a step further by demonstrating homebrew in a quick, Mr. Blurrycam-approved video. Let's say it's off to a good start. Apple has announced that users downloaded over 1 million apps from the Mac App Store since its launch just over 24 hours ago. That's a truly incredible number. The fact that millions of iOS users instantly knew how to use the Mac App Store certainly helped. "We're amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting," Steve Jobs said in a press release. "Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is." One of my TUAW colleagues who shall remain nameless revealed to us yesterday that he doesn't use Time Machine. "Don't talk to me about Time Machine," he said. "I hate it!" My goodness, I thought. Is that even possible? I cannot recount the number of times that Time Machine has saved me from thoughtless text edits or file deletions that I later regretted. Surely that has happened to you too -- you edit something in-place without saving an unmodified original. That's the way most people work. If you try to open a file in the Finder and it doesn't recognize the extension, it will now offer to search the Mac App Store for applications that can open that filetype. Before the Mac App Store's launch, the alert panel you see above would simply say, "There is no default application specified to open the document 'foo.bar' " and offered only "Cancel" or "Choose Application" as choices. Sure the world of digital printing might not catch many people's eye, but there's something otherworldly about just how fast this thing spits out pages. Memjet's office reference printer is fast. How fast? 60 pages a minute, fast. Print quality looks fine at 1600 dots per inch and reportedly half the cost of ownership of other color printers. The trick behind the speed are the 70,000 nozzles firing more than 700 million drops of ink per second that print the page in one pass rather than the several passes of traditional inkjets -- or enough for a page a second. Dell Venue announced for the US, will be sold unlocked

We knew the Dell Venue was coming stateside, but now we know it. Dell has announced the phone for our fine country at its CES 2011 press conference, although it failed to mention a price, a release date, or anything else very helpful. Right now Dell doesn't have a carrier partner, so they're planning on selling the handset unlocked from Dell.com. Apparently they're flirting with the idea of a T-Mobile version, but the unlocked model won't have the T-Mobile 3G bands -- basically, it's an unlocked AT&T phone that AT&T hasn't blessed. Apple puts the freeze on retail employee vacations

AppleInsider reports that Apple Retail has issued a freeze on employee vacations beginning the last week of this month. The freeze reportedly bars any Apple Retail employee without seniority from taking vacation during a three-week period. iRobot's first attempt at a telepresence robot, a modified Roomba, was a false start, but now they're back with an all-new bot called AVA which should right all wrongs. Mac App Store devs need careful code validation, otherwise downloads can be copied

John Gruber of Daring Fireball reports that Mac apps whose developers didn't follow Apple's advice on validating apps (link for registered Apple developers) can easily be copied by users. Gruber notes if Mac App Store developers are following Apple's advice, the technique for using a copied app won't work, but many apps aren't following that advice. He suggests Apple test for this in their review process and reject apps that are vulnerable. Boxee's unreleased Vudu and iPad apps (hands-on)

Boxee is here at CES showing off two unreleased products to eager Boxee fans and novices alike. We were sufficiently bummed when both Netflix and Vudu were delayed for the box, but we can report that they're definitely getting close to primetime. The Vudu app we saw was incredibly polished, quick, and had nice video quality even on the overcongested and questionable internet connection. It actually does a network test the first time you launch the app, but after that you can manually select to watch each program in either SD or HD. Mere hours after the opening of the Mac App Store, software crackers have already found a method that could lead to pirating of Mac App Store software. The method involves copying some package resources from a free app and implanting them into a copy of a paid app obtained from some other source (such as the developer's own web site). The Engadget Podcast Show livestream extravaganza starts at 8PM PST / 11PM EST!

Alright, the past two days have been insanity, meaning our live Engadget Podcast Shows have happened at an ungodly hour, no matter which end of the US you happen to live. Today is totally insane too, but we're going to take a break from the insanity to do an insane live show at 8PM Vegas Local Time (VLT), or 11PM EST, if that's more your bag. Verbatim outs two new USB3 drives, one for Mac users

Verbatim has introduced two brand-new portable external hard drives that utilize the USB3 connector, including a model specifically for Mac users. The Titan XS SuperSpeed USB 3 is touted as the smallest such hard drive available, while the Store 'n' Go SuperSpeed USB3/FW800 caters to the Mac market with the addition of a Firewire 800 connector and being pre-formatted for Macs (a USB2-only version of the drive is also available).

GE gets official with 2011 camera lineup: X500 bridge camera, point-and-shoots aplenty

General Imaging is mixing some of the old in with the new here at CES, but it does look to be slowly but steadily improving its game when it comes to its GE-branded cameras. One of the standouts is the X500 bridge camera (pictured above), which packs 16 megapixels, a 15x optical zoom, an electronic viewfinder, and plenty of manual controls to go along with the usual point-and-shoot features -- all for $150 (actual image quality is another matter, of course). It's joined by the E1680W, E1450W, J1470S, A1456W, and C1433 point-and-shoots, which all pack 14 or 16 megapixels, 3x to 8x optical zooms, and varying degrees of thinness for between $80 and $160 dollars. Avatar Kinect in action: prepare to be mildly diverted

iDapt launches charging stations for iDevices

Spanish mobile accessory developer iDapt has unveiled two new charging solutions that can use either a USB charging port or an interchangeable "tip" system that allows it to be compatible with nearly 4,000 electronic devices. Apple forces changes to @CeoSteveJobs Twitter parody

Apple pressure is forcing changes to a popular Twitter parody of Steve Jobs, @ceoSteveJobs, the account's holder informs. Twitter is noted to have received a "valid impersonation report" about the account, and passed word along, demanding changes more clearly identifying @ceoSteveJobs as a parody. "Valid" has a narrow meaning according to Twitter rules, in this case "the user being impersonated or someone legally authorized to act on behalf of that user/entity."

View NBC's The Cape premiere via iPad app (or not)

NBC's new superhero-themed show The Cape officially debuts its two-hour premiere on TV this coming Sunday night (9 PM EST), but there's at least one way you can get a look at its first hour, legally.
