Hyper Facts for iOS: A powerful and fun database query app

It's amazing what you can find with your iOS device. With the whole internet in your hands, vast databases are yours to explore with a couple of taps. Hyper Facts is a new way to more easily manage these searches, and overall it works pretty well. You type in a search term, a name, or an event (like a historical event) and off goes the app to do a search. The app searches 4 different databases, although the ones used aren't specified, and there are also links to Wikipedia. WSJ's Mossberg: Apple products best of 2010

Technology reviewer for the Wall Street Journal, Walt Mossberg, has revealed his top picks for the best -- and worst -- technology products of 2010. Unsurprisingly, the iPad took top honors, gaining glowing reviews from Mossberg and mass acceptance from the public, with Apple selling more than 7.5 million of the devices before the holiday rush. HTC 7 Pro shows up on O2 Germany's site, promises January launch

HTC had pegged "early next year" for the 7 Pro's launch in Europe, and when you think about it, January is just about as "early" as you can get. O2's boys and girls in Germany have thrown up a teaser page for the QWERTY-equipped Windows Phone 7 handset, saying it's expected to be available next month -- a promising sign, indeed. Granted, launch dates can always slip, but considering how desperately the world needs some more landscape QWERTY options for WP7, we'd bet it's one of HTC's top priorities to get this thing pushed. Nikon patents lens with both manual and electronic zoom

Nikon has filed for a patent in Japan on for a new lens that can both zoom either manually or electronically. The functions would be controlled by a zoom button on the camera body. The intention of the lens to solve the problem faced by users of DSLR cameras when recording video footage and trying to zoom manually at the same time.

Sleipnir Mobile browser 1.0 for iPhone released

Here's an intriguing browser for the iPhone coming out of Japan just in time for Christmas. It comes to us courtesy of Fenrir Inc, the same company who brought us the Sleipnir browser for the Mac, which is currently on version 2.96 with 3.0 in development. Billed as a "web browser with highly functional tab features," Sleipnir Mobile's tabbed browsing features a couple of fun characteristics. Sony patent hints NEX-sized camera with translucent mirror

Sony may bring the translucent mirror technology from the Alpha A33 and A55 to a more compact camera that might sit between the current Alpha and NEX lines. A recent US patent filing has shown a camera with the technology, which allows faster focusing in a mirrored camera, but without an optical viewfinder like a normal Alpha camera. The mirror could even have a dynamic reflectivity that lets in more or less light to trigger the autofocus sensor in low light conditions where it might otherwise not get a lock.

Skype well on the road to recovery, group video calls restored

We almost got to see what Christmas was like before Skype, and it wasn't pleasant. Of course, VOIP and videoconferencing will never replace Grandma Pat's pizzelles, but the technology sure does make pre-holiday planning a lot easier. Our buddies at Engadget had an interesting rumor to pass along this morning. It appears that Skype will be making a major announcement about video calling from iPhone (and other devices) during CES. The first hint Engadget picked up on was that Skype will be participating in a CES panel discussion titled "Video Calling Gets Ready for Primetime." Of course, panel discussions usually include participants from a number of companies, so that's not enough to base a rumor on. An iPad and iPhone app was reported near launch today that could help children with cognitive disabilities speak through their handhelds. VirtualVictor should help those with the rare Pitt Hopkins Syndrome and similar developmental limits communicate by using audiovisual notes. Mac App Store shots reveal Parental Controls, store helper app

9to5Mac apparently snuck its way into the Mac App Store a little early (the marketplace is set to open up on January 6), and has brought back some screenshots of the app's OS X trappings. You can see the app's icon already, and the app will have a login screen very similar to what you already use in iTunes to install iOS apps. Parental controls are available in the store's preferences, and various installs will all be handled by another app called "store helper." Skype bringing video calls to iPhone, iPad at CES

Skype's plans to bring video calling to the iPhone and the iPad were given away today with a help document (may not show the same on all browsers). The page tells users how to set up video calls on the mobile platform and promises that it will work on 3G as well as with Mac and Windows clients. Online sales bounce back, Windows PCs might not follow

Online sales grew rapidly in the holiday this year but weren't necessarily matched by most computer sales, a pair of official and unofficial reports found today. Monster Cable on Thursday sued Fanny Wang for allegedly copying its headphone design. Dutch scientists develop half million euro, 'affordable' super laser

The folks at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) have lovingly referred to their latest contribution to the world of science as the "poor man's X-FEL." An X-FEL, or X-ray Free-electron Laser, is like a super strong video microscope that converts electrons to X-rays to observe high-speed molecular movement. TU/e's super laser alternative depends solely on a very specific bunching of electrons to do the same thing, allowing for a much smaller (it fits on a tabletop), much cheaper setup. Korean family sues Apple over blocked iPhone repair

A South Korean family is suing Apple citing unfair repair policies, says the Korea Herald. In October the father of the family, Lee Chul-ho, asked Apple for approximately $251 in compensation after it refused to repair his daughter's iPhone 3G. Apple is said to have blocked a free warranty repair on the basis that the phone's water sensors were tripped; the family denies causing any water damage.

China Unicom has begun selling a contract-free version of the iPhone 3GS. An 8GB model -- the only 3GS currently produced by Apple -- is priced at 3,999 yuan, or about $603. Mac App Store to be tightly integrated with Mac OS X 10.6.6

The Mac App Store will have hooks into Snow Leopard beyond just installing and removing software, reports observe. If a person attempts to open an unsupported file in build 10J537 of the forthcoming Mac OS X 10.6.6 update, a new warning prompt offers the option of searching the App Store for a compatible program. The prompt appears to borrow from one in Windows, which for some time has offered the choice of searching the web for a solution.

The FCC's leaked Comcast-NBC merger terms may host Hulu its main advantage, an early analysis brought out. Hulu's requirements for semi-exclusivity with free content, where studios can only either offer it on Hulu or on their own sites, might be challenged by an FCC mandate to syndicate video to competitors. Sony buying back Cell chip fabrication facilities from Toshiba, it's official

Sony and Toshiba just issued a press release saying that the two companies have signed a binding memorandum of understanding to transfer Tosh's fabrication facilities, operated by Nagasaki Semiconductor Manufacturing, back to Sony. The Associate Press reports that Apple is working to incorporate Cherokee language support into iOS. Cherokee tribal officials have been begun to worry about the demise of the Cherokee language as the tribe ages and its younger members increasingly use the English language -- and iPhones. Logitech freezing Revue shipments for Google TV update

Logitech has suddenly frozen shipments of its Revue box for over a month while waiting for a major Google TV revamp, insiders said Friday. It reportedly ordered its contractor Gigabyte to stop production from sometime in December through January either while Google fixes the software or else puts out a whole new revision. Production would resume when Honeycomb ships for Android tablets in February or March, Digitimes said, although the two aren't directly linked.

For years now, researchers have been exploring ways to create devices that understand the nonverbal cues that we take for granted in human-human interaction. One of the more interesting projects we've seen of late is led by Professor Peter Robinson at the Computer Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, who is working on what he calls "mind-reading machines," which can infer mental states of people from their body language. The best Mac applications I used in 2010

As the end of 2010 approaches, I started looking back over the Mac applications that I used this year to see which ones stood out. They weren't necessarily released this year (although many were), but they were apps that helped me get stuff done in 2010. I didn't try to come up with some specific number or any other predefined criteria, I just took a good hard look at my Applications folder, menu bar and System Preferences. Canada to get in-flight Wi-Fi in mid-2011

Canadians will get in-flight Wi-Fi access on national flights sometime in the middle of next year, which is a delay from late 2010, as originally intended. SkySurf Canada Communications has the license for in-flight data technology in Canada, and has been working with Air Canada on testing the in-air networking. Dell's Streak 7 tablet, new slogan confirmed in ad leak

Dell's plans for a seven-inch Streak were confirmed today as a leaked treatment for a TV ad has given away some of the details. I love my iPhone and iPad, but two slight revisions to iOS would make my holiday wishes come true. These may not be earth-shattering to you, but they would make my life much simpler. Mail It's lovely that iOS pushes mail to my my devices, but Apple just didn't go far enough with it. When mail is pushed, or fetched for that matter, the only things pushed are what belong in your inbox. I have around 20 IMAP mailboxes that mail gets filtered into using Rules in Mac Mail, and nothing gets pushed to them. I verified this with Apple.
