NOX Audio Scout headset review
Earbuds: love 'em or hate 'em it's hard to argue with their eminent practicality if you're the sort who finds him or herself going from point A to point B on a regular basis. They fit comfortably in a pocket, don't screw up your 'do and, if you get a decent pair, offer some surprisingly good sound. The $80 Scout headset from NOX Audio promises to do all that and act as a hands-free microphone for your phone. EA Mobile puts games on sale, debuts five new titles
Electronic Arts' mobile division has debuted five new games for iOS devices on the App Store, and launched a sale of more than 70 popular titles which will be priced at $1 for a limited time. The new titles now available include Scrabble Free and Cause of Death Free, The Game of Life for iPad, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Foursquare hints at photo sharing, iPhone revamp due soon
Foursquare mentioned late Thursday that a significant new version of its self-titled app had been approved for the App Store. The company didn't say what features it would bring but expected the update to arrive early next week. Founders Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai have both been leaving clues that it would have major features as part of a "hot new app."

Apple's iMac spurs demand for all-in-one PCs
When demand for an electronic product goes through the roof, you can be sure that suppliers will start talking. Taiwan-based Digitimes is reporting that demand for all-in-one computers like the iMac has been climbing lately. That's a little odd in this current economy, since all-in-one devices tend to be more expensive than traditional "box and monitor" PCs.
Of all of the suppliers of all-in-one personal computers, Apple's iMac is leading the pack with about 40% of sales for 2010. Updated iMacs, which currently feature Intel's powerful Core i3, i5, and i7 CPUs, were responsible for a huge year-over-year increase in sales of desktop Macs in 2009, and the addition of faster RAM and processors

How to pronounce ASUS (video)
A-suh-ss? Ah-sue-ss? As-ses? Nope, all wrong. We've been informed by ASUS that its head honcho has recently set a new rule in an attempt to rid our frustration, so what used to be "Ah-seuss" is now "A-seuss" (or "Eh-SUS" according to Taiwanese phonetics, as pictured). The logic behind this? Apparently it's a direct chop from the pronunciation of "pegasus" -- the origin of the company's name -- which ironically seems to favor the former diction. Sharp spends $1.2 billion on LCD production plant, Apple alleged client
Some more scuttlebutt out of the Japan's Nikkei Daily suggests Apple may be investing in a Sharp-owned LCD facility. The Japanese LCD facility was built in 2004 for the production of television LCDs. It has recently been re-purposed for small to mid-size LCDs after Sharp sold off its TV production equipment. Sharp is reportedly expanding this plant to meet increasing demand for mobile-sized LCDs. Construction is expected to begin in 2011 and the plant should be ready for production in 2012. This build-out will cost about 100 billion yen ($1.2 billion) and Apple is allegedly shouldering the lion's share of this cost.
This rumor should sound familiar as earlier speculation suggested

Galaxy Tab hits new low on US Cellular: $200 with 5GB data agreement

Just 48 hours after T-Mobile USA reduced the financial barrier surrounding the Galaxy Tab to just $350 on contract, the suddenly boisterous US Cellular is doing 'em one better. Dropbox hits 1.0 with selective sync
Dropbox today ended a long beta phase and posted Dropbox 1.0 with new features in tow. The cloud storage app now has selective sync and can share just certain photos with the Internet service. Performance has also been given a lift both in response and efficiency, as it only uses half as much memory as it did before.

Rare Apple Lisa 1 goes up for auction
One of Apple's earliest computers, the Lisa 1, has appeared for auction on eBay. A single $7,500 bid has been made so far; the model in question is said to be functional and largely intact, for instance including original floppy drives and ROMs as well as a keyboard. Absent from the auction are a mouse, battery and the Lisa system software.

L.A. Noire's amazing MotionScan facial capture system demonstrated (video)
In gaming, 3D graphics get more powerful, environments get more expansive, enemies get more intelligent, but still facial animations haven't progressed much since Pac-Man chomped his first power pellet in 1980. Palm's tablet is codenamed 'Topaz,' keyboard accessory leaks out
Okay, it's not exactly the new webOS hardware we've been waiting for, but we just got this shot of a Palm Bluetooth keyboard from a trusted source -- we're told it's an accessory for Palm's upcoming tablet, which is codenamed "Topaz." Interestingly, we're told the keyboard features a Windows key in addition to some webOS-specific keys -- we'd guess that HP will sell it for general use as well. Level 3 asks FCC to slap terms on Comcast-NBC deal
Level 3 has tried to bring the FCC more directly into its net neutrality dispute with Comcast with a letter sent later on Thursday. The message to FCC chairman Julius Genachowski and the Department of Justice's Assistant Attorney General Christine Varney to impose conditions on the proposed Comcast-NBC merger to keep it fair. Comcast's insistence on higher rates for Level 3 to reach its network "adversely changes the nature of the Internet" and, buy implication, might get worse if it owned a TV network.

USB 3.0 for Mac review and benchmarks (with a LaCie 2big USB 3.0)
It took LaCie nearly a full year to ship the 2big USB 3.0 RAID drive -- a device that was announced in the fall of 2009 -- but now that it's here, it's being accompanied by a concept that actually far outshines the unit itself: USB 3.0 on a Mac. Apple owns 66% of online music market, Amazon a distant second place
As if Apple's share of the online music world wasn't big enough, financial research firm NPD Group is reporting that iTunes is now responsible for 66.2% of the market for online music purchases. That's up from 63.2% earlier in the year, despite intense competition from Amazon, which is way behind in second place at 13.3%. Remarkably enough, Amazon also saw growth this year, raising its share from around 11% earlier in 2010.
The online retailer has been promoting "daily deal" albums that are priced much lower than the same music on the iTunes store, actually selling many of the albums below cost in order to attract new customers. Microsoft rolls out updated Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac
It's still technically in beta, but Microsoft has just rolled out a fairly significant update to its Windows Phone 7 Connector software for Mac. Among other things, the software now has a new device setup process, support for manual file imports from the device, and the ability to sync content purchased on your phone back to your Mac -- not to mention a slew of bug fixes and other more minor tweaks. Apple hiring iOS navigation software experts
Four new job board listings suggest Apple may be looking for engineers to help build navigation software for iOS. Each position is looking for someone to "deliver the next generation of Apple products" and asks for "experience developing navigation software." All four job listings are identical, suggesting Apple may be building a development team dedicated to mapping and navigation.

Skyfire browser headed for iPad
Skyfire, the internet browser that transcodes Flash video content into HTML5 so that it can be viewed on Apple's iOS devices (which, in case you didn't already know, don't support Flash), is coming to the iPad.
Alongside its main function, Skyfire for iPad will introduce some additional social networking features directly into the browser -- most notably for Facebook users, but Twitter and Google Reader users are included, too. Basically, you're now able to view feeds in pop-up windows while you are browsing the web. Sharing websites with your Facebook buddies is also made really simple and it's super easy to "Like" a website you're visiting by making a couple taps; there's no need to go directly to the Facebook website.

Lacie Float Konzept kombiniert Festplatte und Multitouchpad

Die Lacie Float ist noch ein Hirngespinst des Designers André Silva. Aber die Zusammenführung von Festplatte und Trackpad klingt an und für sich sehr vielversprechend und verlockend. Die Oberfläche besteht aus Kohlefaser und die Basis aus Glas. Immer ein größeres Trackpad parat, mit Multitouch natürlich und dazu die Daten, die man sonst immer bei sich trägt. Müsste man sich ggf. erst dran gewöhnen, dürfte aber bei diversen SetUps durchaus Sinn machen.

Shortages may be guaranteeing no AMOLED for next-gen iPad
Supplies may be an overriding reason why Apple is sticking with LCDs for the second-generation iPad, rather than switching to AMOLED technology, a Taiwanese report suggests. Panel makers claim that AMOLED is, at present, unsuited to mass production of 7- to 11-inch screens, and would be too expensive relative to LCD regardless. Samsung Mobile Display is in fact said to be unable to produce enough AMOLEDs for cellphones like the Galaxy S and Nexus S, much less a tablet as large as the iPad.

iPad and Kinect: two fastest-selling gadgets of all time
Apple and Microsoft have been competing for decades in the desktop market, so it is only natural to compare their success in other markets. Though the Microsoft Kinect and the Apple iPad are vastly different devices, the pair are the two fastest selling gadgets this year. The Next Web put together an interesting iPad versus Kinect infographic that compares the number of units sold and the estimated revenue for each device.

Honeycomb may just be Android 2.4, ship in February
Google may try to dial back some of the expectations for its tablet version of Android on at least a superficial level if a claim from a developer source is accurate. iPads used by House of Representatives officially
Hot on the heels iPad's recent appearance in the U.S. House of Representatives, thanks to congressman Henry Cuellar, Politico reports that the iPad may soon gain formal access to Congress. As it stands, no electronic devices are allowed on the House floor.
A tech-savvy group of incoming group of lawmakers are keen to see the formal rules changed, allowing them to use electronic devices on the House floor, though, according to a House leadership aide, no official decision has been made on the iPad.
House Parliamentarian John Sullivan said, "I would advise the speaker that if an iPad is not being used to play sound oras a transmitting device, it is allowed."

Researchers find weak point in lithium-ion batteries, suggest better nanowires could be the answer
We've seen countless attempts to build a better lithium-ion battery, but there's been far fewer research efforts devoted solely to figuring out why lithium-ion batteries don't last longer. A team of scientists at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have been doing just that, however, and they're now sharing some of their findings. The main culprit, they say, are the nano-sized wires made of bulk tin oxide used in the batteries, which can expand and deform considerably over time, eventually rendering the battery useless. The Swiss Broadcasting Corporation launched its iPad app last week with a short video boiling the history of Switzerland down to a tongue-in-cheek story of William Tell, chocolate, a potato field and a Super Mario-like rescue of a princess.

Sharp investing $1.2b in expanding smartphone LCD production, Apple fingered as the major client

Blockbuster kiosks face same 28-day wait as Netflix, others
Blockbuster on Friday said that its Express kiosks would have to wait 28 days before getting new movies from Warner Bros. to rent. Despite having trialed same-day launches as recently as the past few weeks, such as Fox's Knight and Day, the company has agreed to stall the $1 DVDs in return for closer contact with Warner Bros. as well as a lower distribution cost and healthier supply. Apple expected to lead tablet market through at least 2011
Apple should have the majority of the tablet market for at least all of 2011, JPMorgan analyst Mark Moskowitz said on Friday. Starting from an estimated 83.3 percent of the market this fall, the iPad would drop but still hold on to 61.7 percent in 2011. Most of the drop would only come in the summer, when Android 3.0 tablets would ship in earnest.

Yes, the new Tron Legacy movie is out this weekend, and if you haven't heard about it yet, you probably will soon. There has been a free promotional app out for a while now (and it actually has a few little games to play with), but Disney has also released an official Tron Legacy game, now available on the App Store. This one's a full-fledged 3D game, featuring a Light Cycle racing mode along with an on-rails shooting mode that puts you behind a "Recognizer" (one of the big ships they fly around in the movie).

Chip implanted in spinal cord could help sufferers of chronic pain (video)
Researchers at Sydney's National ICT Australia (NICTA) have spent the past two years developing an incredibly futuristic invention which could bring relief to those who suffer from chronic pain. What it amounts to is a series of 'smart' chips inserted into biocompatible devices and strung together. Apps kauft man im App Store. Richtig? Wenn es nach diesem Patent von Apple geht, nicht mehr lange. Die Idee ist, dass man als Entwickler, oder auch aus User, Apps direkt an andere schicken kann. Und so eine Art viraler Kette auslöst, die vor allem StartUps im App Business etwas bringen könnte. Application Seed nennt sich das hier. Einfach über WiFi oder Bluetooth rüberbeamen, und dann bekommt man eine Trial-Version der App für Freunde. Wir sind gespannt ob ähnliche Funktionalitäten bald auftauchen werden. Es könnte die App Welt jedenfalls um einiges verändern.

Dropbox 1.0 available with performance enhancements, Selective Sync
Dropbox, the multi-platform file syncing application that frankly puts Apple's own iDisk to shame, has been updated to version 1.0. The application has been in public beta for over two years, and an iOS version of Dropbox came out about a year after the public beta began.

Word Lens is one of those apps that grabs your attention the first time you see it in action. Created by Quest Visual, It is an iPhone-based optical character recognition (OCR) application used for language translation. In real-world usage, it will translate a foreign language sign in an instant using your camera. Word Lens uses OCR to single out the letters in an image captured by your camera. It identifies letters, builds the words and looks them up in its built-in dictionary. Once the words are identified, translation from one language to another is easy.

Gestern hat Apple diverse Updates veröffentlicht. iTunes 10.1.1 bringt in gut 93 MB ‘wichtige Fehlerbehebungen’. Ein knapp 1 MB grosses Firmware-Update für das 27-Zoll-LED-Cinema Display soll dessen sporadischen Ton-Probleme beheben. Ein 12.3 MB grosses AirPort-Dienstprogramm (5.5.2) enthält Fehlerbehebungen und Verbesserungen während das RAW-Kompatibilitätsupdate 3.5 Mac OS X die RAW-Formate der folgenden Kameras beibringt: Canon PowerShot G12, Leica D-Lux 5, Leica V-Lux 2, Nikon D7000, Nikon COOLPIX P7000, Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2, Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2. BlackBerry PlayBook will ship in March, assuming inertial momentum
RIM dropped an intriguing hint about a likely release date for the BlackBerry PlayBook during its Q3 earnings call this week -- namely, that the company expects the first revenue from the dual-core tablet to arrive in the first quarter of the company's fiscal year. HTC Aria gets Android 2.2 update... but not on AT&T yet
We know this isn't exactly the news you wanted to hear, AT&T customers, but it's comforting to know that the diminutive Aria has been upgraded to Froyo somewhere, isn't it? Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac beta 2 fixes AAC music
Microsoft has quietly posted beta 2 of Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac that addresses some of its major bugs. The app primarily tackles music and now fixes playback for the AAC files synced from iTunes that wouldn't play. It can further reverse sync MP3s bought from the WP7 phone, properly sync from remote iTunes installs, and transfers bookmarks, ratings, release dates that were previously left out.

Tango updated to support iPod touch
This is going to be a great holiday gift for many of our readers. Tango Video Calls, the app that lets you do free video chats with friends over 3G as well as Wi-Fi, has been updated to work on the 4th generation iPod touch. Rather than use the app for registration, you can register via email.
The update, which also applies to the iPhone 4, gives the contact list a new look and feel and also has improved resolution on the Retina Display.

iTunes at 66.2% of digital; Amazon MP3 sold at a loss
iTunes is continuing to increase its share of the digital music market in the US even in spite of Amazon MP3, the NPD Group found on Thursday. Amazon moved up 2.3 points from year-to-year to 13.2 percent of the American download market in the summer, but Apple climbed by an even higher amount, up three points to 66.2 percent. As a result, all of Amazon's gain came at the expense of smaller rivals, which combined were just 20.5 percent.

Google Fiber's 1Gbps ISP 'test community' selection delayed until 2011
As you can imagine, the call for a community to be the recipient of Google Fiber's 1Gbps network was met by an overwhelming response. Indeed, the response was so great that while the recipient of all that bandwidth was to be announced at the end of this year, it looks like they won't have a decision until early 2011. In the meantime, the project will continue to offer insanely high download speeds to Google's campus and an 850 home beta network in Stanford.

Apple updates Airport, Time Capsule firmware and software
Apple has posted a firmware update for all 802.11n-capable Airport base stations and Time Capsules, as well as new versions of Airport Utility for Mac and Windows. The firmware update, labelled 7.5.2, closes several security holes as well as bolsters stability under IPv6. It also fixes issues with Airplay streaming, USB connectivity, addresses some issues with NAT port mapping and disables TKIP security for 802.11n in accordance with the Wi-Fi Alliance specifications.

Apple posts RAW compatibility, Windows MobileMe updates
Apple today posted updates to improve the calendar-syncing experience for Windows Outlook users of the company's MobileMe service, as well as expand the ability of iPhoto '11 and Aperture v3 to recognize RAW files from recent digital cameras. RIM claims companies delaying 'other tablets' for PlayBook
RIM during the call discussing its fall 2010 results claimed that companies were delaying their iPad plans to test the BlackBerry PlayBook. Co-CEO Jim Balsillie said that existing BlackBerry customers were stalling plans for "other tablets" to see if the PlayBook was worth the expense. 32 GB versus 32GB: Almost everyone is writing it wrong
Fair warning, dear reader: this may be the most pedantic post in the history of TUAW. Maybe in history, period. But I can't help it: someone is wrong on the internet.
Here's a fun trick. Go to the Apple menu on your Mac and select "About This Mac." A little window will come up listing your processor and RAM specs. Mine describes a 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of RAM. If I click "More Info" to open System Profiler, I'll also learn that I have a 250 GB hard drive.
Now go to Apple's product page for the MacBook Pro and click on "Buy Now" to see descriptions of tech specs. The 17-inch model is currently listed with a 2.53GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. Other than the obvious differences in specs, did you notice anything different? All the spaces disappeared.
