Google Latitude app shows up, disappears from Japanese App Store
An app for Google Latitude briefly appeared on the Japanese iOS App Store yesterday, only to disappear a few hours later. Latitude is of course Google's persistent location-based service, allowing you to see where your friends are at on a map, and share your own location in real time. EU-Kommission verhängt Strafe gegen Display-Hersteller

App Store: Promo Codes können jetzt weltweit eingelöst werden

Verizon sucks at Photoshop: the Continuum definitely can't do this, we checked
Notice something missing from that Continuum there on Big Red's home page? App promo codes become usable worldwide
Promo codes for iOS apps now apply to all App Stores, a Spanish-language website notes. "Your promo code distribution is no longer limited to US customers," an iTunes Connect message informs. "Promo codes in iTunes Connect can now be redeemed by all App Store customers worldwide. Your Team Agent can request 50 codes per version of your app in iTunes Connect and your customers can redeem these codes in any App Store."

Study: Android users chew much more data than iPhone owners
Android users are much more data hungry than their iPhone counterparts, Arieso said in a new study. Using the iPhone 3G as the baseline, Android was often more demanding for traffic in both directions. The Samsung Galaxy S would upload as much as 126 percent more data where an HTC Desire would often download 41 percent more.

Marketwatch names Steve Jobs CEO of the decade calling him the rock star of corporate America
Well, that's hard to disagree with. Apple was one of the early inventors of the personal computer industry, but when Jobs left Apple fortunes began to diminish. In the mid nineties, Apple was becoming all but irrelevant. Then Jobs returned, and the hits started appearing. The iMac, the iPod, now the iPhone, the iPad and the MacBook Air. Apple has set the pace in an industry that was dominated by Microsoft, and Jobs has carved out a leading space in the home and personal mobile devices.
MarketWatch describes Jobs as "a meticulous micromanager who can drive his employees to distraction - and one of the most important figures in American industry in the past half-century."

Internet Explorer 9 privacy measures to include Tracking Protection
In a nod to future FTC mandates regarding web privacy, Microsoft has announced that among its many charms, Internet Explorer 9 will introduce something called a Tracking Protective List. In essence, the TPL looks at third party elements of whichever page you may be viewing (for instance, when you're at msnbc.com and it contains elements that are hosted by another domain) and allows you to block those which track your movements. Apple wins patents on multi-touch, other technologies
Apple has won some 16 new patents from the US Patent and Trademark Office, says Patently Apple. The most important relates to multi-touch, specifically the concept of two or more controllers operating in a "master/slave" configuration. The win could strengthen Apple's position in future lawsuits, which have become common in relation to multi-touch. Apple notes that the concept could be extended to products outside of its specialties, such as ATMs and ticket terminals.

iTunes adds international promo codes, push notification security upgraded
A couple of big changes occurred today in the iOS ecosystem. First, application promo codes may now be used internationally, instead of being limited to US store customers only. Second, the push notification system has been upgraded to use more secure 2048-bit TLS/SSL certificates.
International promo code distribution will greatly help those developers whose products are meant primarily for use outside the United States. This particularly affects applications where English is not the primary language for use or US customers are not the central audience. Pitchfork gets a custom iPod touch page-topper ad
Apple has developed a custom ad for indie music review site Pitchfork. You can go over and see it right now in any WebKit-based browser (so Safari or Chrome) -- an iPod touch pops up in front of the menu bars, and everything gets swept away in the games being played.
This ad is notable for a few reasons. First of all, Pitchfork, unlike some of Apple's other custom ad targets, is a completely online publication, so Apple is now targeting blog readers as well as traditional newspaper readers. Euro carriers try again to have Apple, Facebook share costs

Infinity Blade for iOS now available in NZ App Store, coming to US soon
Epic Games' Infinity Blade, a graphically rich role playing game for iOS, is currently available in the New Zealand App Store and will presumably be coming to the US and other countries' stores later today. Infinity Blade is a universal app that will run on 'current + 1 older' generation iDevices, meaning the iPod touch 3rd/4th Gen, the iPhone 3GS + iPhone 4, and the iPad.
The game costs NZ$8.29 in the New Zealand App Store, which means that it should cost US$5.99 when it comes out on the US App Store. That's a much lower price than we'd expected for a game that looks this good, and the fact that it's a universal app (no "HD" version for the iPad) is even better. AMD, Intel, PC builders plan to drop VGA by 2015
AMD, Dell, Intel, Lenovo, Samsung and LG on Wednesday said they plan on focusing on putting digital DisplayPort and HDMI connections into their computer products. They hope to drop analog VGA and LVDS connections in AMD- and Intel-based products by 2015, the chipmakers said. SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft successfully launches, returns from orbit (video)
It may have hit a few snags earlier this week, but SpaceX's slightly-delayed launch of its Dragon spacecraft looks to have gone off as well as anyone could have possibly hoped for. The craft blasted off from Cape Canaveral atop a Falcon 9 rocket earlier today, entered a "100 percent successful" low-earth orbit, and returned to Earth to make an on-target soft landing in the Pacific Ocean just a short while ago. Intel Atom in smartphones pushed back to late 2011
Intel chief Paul Otellini on Wednesday revealed that smartphones running its processors won't arrive until the second half of 2011. News: Apple lowers prices on refurb iPads, adds 3G models
Apple has lowered its prices on its refurbished iPad Wi-Fi units while adding 3G offerings. Compared to the prior discount of $50 off retail for Wi-Fi models, the 16GB model is now $429, or $70 lower than retail units, while the 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi models have seen their prices slashed to $499 and $599, respectively, a discount of $100 off retail. HD Movies hit iTunes UK
Good news for Apple fans in the UK: Apple has finally added HD movies to the iTunes store. The selection seems to be rather limited for now. MacRumors notes that Twilight is among the more high-profile selections. Pricing works like this: movies that sell for £9.99 in standard definition are £12.99 in HD, while those priced at £6.99 for SD are selling for £7.99 in HD.
Until now, HD movies were only available to rent in the UK. The Japanese market only received movies in iTunes last month (SD and HD) while in the U.S., Apple added HD movies to the iTunes Store in March of 2009.

Dev Team makes progress on untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak
Success has been reached with an improved iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak, according to iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd. Patents for multi-touch, iPad dock and MacBook Air awarded to Apple
Apple has been awarded several patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, one of which could be valuable ammunition in the flood of intellectual property lawsuits that has been swirling around the company lately.

Intel quietly forms netbook and tablet group to fend off competition
There wasn't even so much as a press release announcing this one, but The New York Times has confirmed with Intel that the chip maker recently formed a new business unit dubbed simply the "netbook and tablet group." Apple deepens price cuts on refurbished iPads
Apple has further lowered some prices on refurbished iPads. Classified as a "special limited time" offer, the deal also applies only to Wi-Fi models, not ones with 3G. A 16GB Wi-Fi tablet is now $429, for instance, $20 less than the usual refurbished cost. The greatest discounts apply to 32 and 64GB iPads, which are each $100 less than retail at $499 and $599.

Intel starts netbook, tablet group to fend off iPad, Android
Intel today confirmed that it has started up a dedicated network and tablet group in what's likely an attempt to counter the iPad and a slew of other ARM tablets. The group will be lead by the leader of the company's embedded chip and communications team, Doug Davis. It should help "sharpen our focus [at Intel]" on the newer categories, company spokesman Bill Kircos told the New York Times.

First, I'll be using a new HP Photosmart C310a e-All-in-One printer to demonstrate how printing from an iPad or iPhone running iOS 4.2 is supposed to work. This printer is one of a handful that supports ePrint and zero-configuration printing, so you can literally set up the printer to work with Macs, PCs and iDevices without installing a driver anywhere, or print anything that you can email. European carriers want providers like Apple, Facebook and Google to help finance the billions of dollars worth of network investments that their data-hungry devices and services demand. France Telecom SA, Telecom Italia SpA and Vodafone Group Plc are among those requesting that Apple and the others start paying a usage-based fee.
The carriers note that the ever-increasing pool of mobile users requires significant upgrades to their networks. Eventually, they fear, the cost of keeping up will outpace revenue growth. The People's Republic of Berkeley is getting a new Apple Store.
ifoAppleStore has all of the details and images of the 15 pound pack of Apple Store blueprints that were recently dropped off at the Berkeley, CA city planning department. Hacksugar: Twisting your browser
This morning, we posted a simple little trick for slowing down OS X animations by depressing the shift key. In the comments on that post, TUAW reader Rafe H reminded me about this sweet little trick that allows you to retain a warped (but still usable) browser window in your workspace.
By slowing the animation during minimization and killing the dock mid-transition (enter "killall Dock" in a Terminal window), the window retains the Core Animation changes at the point that the OS X dock is terminated. That produces a seriously eyecatching result that will please your aesthetics for well, probably at least for seconds.

iPad display supplier reportedly identified
DigiTimes has reportedly identified another iPad parts supplier. This time, Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Coretronic has been pegged to deliver backlighting units (BLUs), starting in the beginning of 2011. Specifically, Coretronic will deliver the units to vendors Chimei Innolux and LG Display.
This rumor suggests that the next-generation iPad will not have an OLED display, and will be fundamentally similar to the backlit, IPS-style LCD it currently uses.

TI's OMAP4440 processor brings two blazing Cortex-A9 cores to the table
Phones and tablets based on TI's first production OMAP4 processor -- the OMAP4430 -- won't even be on the market until early next year, but TI's already planning ahead with the announcement of an upgraded chip that promises a 50 percent boost in overall performance. The new OMAP4440 can send its two Cortex-A9-based cores as high as 1.5GHz, while the 4430 tops out at 1GHz; TI says that means we should expect a 1.25x improvement in graphics performance, a 30 percent decline in webpage load time, and 1080p playback performance that doubles the slowpoke (comparably speaking, anyway) 4430. Google Latitude for iPhone briefly tips up on App Store
Google today briefly posted an iPhone version of Latitude on iTunes in Japan (App Store, since pulled) that hinted the native app would finally reach Apple devices. Chinese customs arrests group of iPad smugglers
Customs officials in Shenzhen, China have arrested a group of 14 housewives caught smuggling iPads into the mainland from Hong Kong, according to local paper Guangzhou Daily. Together the women were reportedly carrying 88 iPads, along with 340 cellphones. One of the women is said to have had 65 phones strapped to her waist, and over 20 more stashed in a handbag.

Thumbstar Games aus Großbritannien haben ihr Jump and Rund Dynamo Kid touch im App Store veröffentlicht. Es soll wegen seiner Grafik und des Gameplays an die Granden der 8- und 16-Bit-Ära erinnern.
Eigentlich war ich davon ausgegangen, dass es Dynamo Kid touch (Affiliate) schon eine Weile länger im App Store gibt. Dort steht als Veröffentlichungsdatum

iPadLock protects your iPad from thieves
Travelers with iPads have a bit of a dilemma. There's no way to lock the iPad to a heavy piece of furniture to keep it from walking off when you leave the room and somebody else decides to pick it up.
Maclocks.com has a new way to resolve the problem. They've just introduced the iPadLock, which is a combination of a special case and a traditional laptop cable lock. The case is made of very hard plastic and holds the iPad. On the side is a standard security slot into which a cable lock can be introduced. The result? It's easy to lock down your iPad. According to Maclocks, once the lock and the case are joined together, thieves can't remove the case without damaging the iPad.

Netflix licenses even more TV for streaming from ABC/Disney
\We're not sure if Netflix ended up paying the $100,000 per episode it was rumored to be offering to put new TV shows on Watch Instantly, but it has reached a new deal with Disney-ABC Television Group that keeps episodes of shows like Lost on the streaming service while also adding new ones. Netflix scores access to ABC, Disney TV with 15-day gap
Netflix landed another major content deal today as it reached a new deal with Disney and ABC. In exchange for a minimum 15-day delay between a first TV appearance and the online version, Netflix will get a much deeper catalog that includes prior-season access to current shows like Grey's Anatomy and full seasons of past shows like Lost and Scrubs. Coretronic pegged to supply second-gen iPad backlights
Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Coretronic has joined the supply chain for the second-generation iPad, a local report says. The company will allegedly be supplying BLUs -- backlighting units -- to two companies, Chimei Innolux and LG Display. Apple bekam vom US-Patentamt mehrere Patente zugesprochen: Das Design für ein iPad Dock, ähnlich der Halterung für das iPhone, sowie ein iPod-Armband. Mac 101: The wonderful magical Shift key
Oh that Shift key. So normal, so overlooked, so simple and yet so magical. TUAW reader Karan recently dropped us a note, reminding us about its slow-speed enchantment. "I don't think a lot of Mac users know this," she wrote, "but the Shift key has a very cool (although obviously just for extra eye-candy) feature on the Mac."
When depressed, the Shift key will slow down certain on-screen animations, giving an extra long visual boost to window transitions. For example, you can shift in the following scenarios:

Nokia praises iPhone, warns of 'Cupertino distortion field'
Nokia Design Strategy Director Marko Ahtisaari had mixed views of Apple's work at his speech at the LeWeb conference in Paris on Wednesday. TUAW's Daily App: Scrambleface
Scrambleface is a simple app that does one thing pretty darn well. All it does is take live feed from an iPhone or latest-gen iPod touch's camera (and it does require iOS 4.0 or higher), then it turns that into a sliding puzzle for you to unscramble. It's not flashy or crazy, but it is kind of fun, and the fact that it uses the live camera feed gives it a nice twist that will appeal to kids or anyone you happen to be demonstrating the iPhone to. There are 21 randomly generated levels that can be done as time challenges if you so choose, and there's an update coming soon with Game Center integration and leaderboards.

Handheld gamers leaving DS and PSP for their phones
A new report on the digital media industry from a firm named Interpret says that mobile phone gaming is rising at an incredible rate, even while traditional handheld gaming (such as games on handheld consoles like Nintendo's DS or Sony's PSP) is falling off. 43.8 percent of the gaming market plays games on phones like the iPhone according to the report, a sizable total that represents a jump of more than double the total last year. During the same period, DS and PSP gaming has dropped by 13 percent, and 27.2 percent of users say they own a DS or PSP, but only play games on their phones.

Bild sperrt iPad User aus!
Die neue Bild App für da iPad ist soeben im AppStore erschienen.
Soweit so gut - doch gleichzeitig sperrt Bild ab sofort den Browser-Zugriff auf Ihre Webseite für iPad Nutzer.
Geht man auf die Seite erhält man den Hinweis, dass Bild.de nicht mehr auf dem iPad verfügbar sei, da es nun die spezielle iPad App gibt

Laut Digitimes hat Apple bereits die Hintergrundbeleuchtung für das kommende iPad 2 gekauft. Diese sollen voraussichtlich in Verbindung mit LCD-Displays eingesetzt werden – nicht, wie bisher gedacht AMOLED-Varianten.

Nexus S will drop Super AMOLED in favor of Super Clear LCD in Russia, maybe other territories too

Nokia X7 wartet auf sein Preview

Gerade neulich war das eher nicht so geschmackssicher gestaltete Nokia X7 mit Video und beim Need for Speed-Spielen aufgetaucht, nun hat es Eldar Murtazin in der Mangel und bereitet eines seiner gnadenlosen Previews vor. Das letzte Nokia Gerät das von ihm getestet wurde fand keine Gnade und das war immerhin das N8. Die Google-Translate Version für den Teaser zum X7-Preview spricht allerdings Bände: "Ich mag nicht dieses Gerät" lautet gleich der erste Satz. Nun ja, ein weiteres Bild gibt es nach dem Break.

BlueSLR turns iOS devices into dSLR remote controls
XEquals has released blueSLR, a Bluetooth accessory and accompanying app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad that allows them to remotely control certain models of digital SLR cameras from up to 300 feet away. 28 days. It's more than an unappreciated flick from the turn of the millennium, it's also driving the executives at Redbox, Netflix and a smattering of other unorthodox rental companies mad. We know there's a lot to digest after Google's Chrome OS event today, but following the shindig we caught a few minutes with Google VP of Product Management Sundar Pichai. Spotify still planning to launch in the US... sometime
Wondering about the state of Spotify in the United States? You're not the only one, and Spotify CEO and co-found Daniel Ek was once again asked that key question at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference today. His response? Google delays netbook plans for Chrome OS to mid 2011
Google's plan to bring a web-centric, open operating system to netbooks has been delayed until the first half of 2011 as the company continues to work on Chrome OS, originally expected to launch this summer. LG invents imaginary 1GHz processor requirement to say Optimus One won't get Gingerbread
So here's the story: dude asks LG's US mobile team on Facebook when the Optimus One -- the basis for the various Optimus devices that have launched recently on American carriers -- will be getting Android 2.3. LG responds saying that "the minimum requirements for Gingerbread require 1 GHz processor," hence, no update's in the cards. Danish newspaper protests App Store censorship
According to The Mac Observer, Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet isn't too happy with Apple's App Store policies regarding nudity. QuickTime 7.6.9 brings long list of security fixes

Alleged Steve Jobs email: MobileMe to get a lot better
MacRumors is reporting on an email, which it believes to be authentic, that one of its readers received from Steve Jobs. The reader sent the email to Jobs after the frustrations over his MobileMe experiences mounted. The reader told Jobs that while he's a huge fan of Apple and "wants to stay inside the Apple ecosystem," MobileMe is making it hard to do so.
The reader goes on to tell Jobs that MobileMe is almost "unusable" and cites "unreliable/unpredictable syncing" and "creating duplicate entries" as two examples of the shortcomings of MobileMe. He then asks Jobs to tell him that it will get better soon. Jobs' reply:

Apple updates VoiceOver Kit for shuffle, 5th-gen Nanos
Apple has updated it's VoiceOver Kit for fifth-generation iPod nanos and third- and fourth-generation iPod shuffles to v1.4, available through the Software Update utility. The new version improves pronunciations for artists and song names; improves voices in Korean, German and Russian, and adds Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak and Thai language support to the fourth-generation iPod Shuffle.

Comcast intros Android app, says no usage-based pricing
Comcast today posted an Android version of its Xfinity Mobile mobile app. Less advanced than Xfinity TV for iOS, the app can remotely schedule a DVR and check listings but can't remote control live programming. The app serves as a catch-all for other Comcast services and will take in VoIP voicemail as well as check Comcast mail.

If you agree with Consumer Reports' take on AT&T's terrible wireless service, the good news is that you might not have that much longer to wait. "Exclusive arrangements end," AT&T's CFO Richard Lindner told the UBS Media and Communications Conference earlier this week.

AT&T not worried 'at all' about Verizon iPhone
AT&T's Emerging Devices lead Glenn Lurie in a talk today provided an extra view of the company's attitude towards the increasingly likely Verizon iPhone as well as some insight into the carrier's relationship with Apple. After being grilled repeatedly by Walt Mossberg at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference, he dismissed the multiple leaks as "rumor" but was confident it wasn't an issue. Blast is a great way to keep track of what you use and where it is on your Mac
Mac OS X has buckets of really neat features, many of which aren't always obvious. One of the things I use frequently in OS X is the 'Recent Items' menu, which is invoked from the Apple menu. It shows recently used apps and documents.
Blast (US $9.95 for a single user) is kind of Recent Items on steroids. It resides on the menu bar, and keeps track of every item that was recently used or changed. Take an incoming download, for example. Sure, I can go to my download folder, but I often have more than a hundred items in there. Yes, I can then search by date, and come up with it, but with Blast it's instantly found with a click. It's something the Apple Recent Items menu doesn't do.
Even better, I can then drag the item somewhere else, like to an email, or to a program icon to launch it. Of course,
