Apple releases Aperture 3.1.1 update

Apple has released an update to Aperture, its popular photo management and editing software. The 3.1.1 update addresses overall stability and performance issues and includes fixes over 20 bugs, including the following: Addresses compatibility with the iLife Media Browser Improves reliability when upgrading existing Aperture libraries Addresses issues with publishing photos to MobileMe, Facebook and Flickr Aperture 3.1.1 is 358MB in size and can be downloaded through Software Update or from the web here. Yet another "iPad 2" case surfaces

Hot on the heals of today's first leaked iPad 2 case comes the second leaked iPad 2 case (which I'm sure will be followed by a number of "leaked iPad 2 cases" over the next few months). Like the earlier case, this second case features a hole in the upper-left (when viewed from the back) corner. Presumably this hole is where the rear-facing camera will be located. This second case also features a much larger speaker slot. Of course, that larger speaker slot could turn out to be a combined SD card/speaker slot, or some other type of interface. Microsoft bumps up WP7 pay to January, finally adds reports

Microsoft's Todd Brix today answered developer criticism of no pay and no tools for Windows Phone 7. The company has moved up its planned initial payments a month to January and now has its first reporting tools. Developers can now see how many downloads they get per day in each country.

Gmail for Android update improves Priority Inbox, adds additional compose and send options

Hey, Google just rolled out Gmail for Android 2.3.2, which improves support for Priority Inbox and adds in a couple much-needed compose and send options. Priority Inbox gets some buffed-up views and controls to change importance settings, and Gmail can now send a notification upon receipt of an important email, which is incredibly cool. Even better, the compose screen now lets you specify any sending address you've setup in desktop Gmail, which is a slice of pure email heaven for those of us who juggle multiple accounts from one inbox. Popular ice cream chain Ben & Jerry's is giving away a set of pretty awesome iPhone cases -- but only in Singapore. Customers in that country will be able to trade in four carton tops to stores there, and pick up one of 5,000 completely free iPhone covers. You can see what the covers look like above -- there are twelve shops involved in the promotion, and each one of those shops also has one limited edition cover each to give away to extra lucky customers. Intel confirms Oregon plant will be ready to make 450 mm wafers

Intel's already boasted of its massive investment in a new 22 nanometer manufacturing process, and it's now confirmed that it's new plant in Hillsboro, Oregon, dubbed D1X will be ready to produce 450 millimeter wafers. Of course, "ready" seems to be the keyword here -- Intel will apparently stick with 300 mm wafers for a while yet, but have all the necessary preparations put in place to kick start 450 mm production when the industry is ready for it. Sprint plans multiple tablets in 2011, mum on iPad

A top Sprint executive revealed it will bring out more tablet PCs in 2011 to cater to customer demand. In an interview with Reuters published on Thursday, Sprint business markets President Paget Alves revealed these same customers are looking to replace their larger and more expensive notebooks with the smaller devices. Costco confirms plans to phase out all Apple products

Costco is ultimately phasing out all Apple products from its stores, the company's CFO has announced. Speaking during a financial conference call, Richard Galanti described the plan as a mutual agreement. The only cited reason is online sales; Galanti notes that Apple was forbidding Costco from selling products online, unlike other some other third-party vendors.

Cypress Hill backup singer sees himself in Grand Theft Auto, sues Rockstar

Parallels weirds us out with this Eminem/Avatar Mac parody

A warning: The video after the break is one of the weirdest things we've ever seen promoting the Mac OS. Sure, it's from Parallels, and sure, the virtualization software guys know how to sell a switch over to the Mac. But here they've chosen to do it in an extremely weird way, by creating a parody version of an Eminem song (that's still SFW, as far as we can tell), and combining it with some strange references to the movie Avatar. We don't really get it (eventually, Steve Ballmer and Steve Jobs fight it out, and then there's some explosions?), but some of you might find it funny. Alleged iPad 2 cases show up with some interesting cuts (video)

Looks like some Chinese manufacturers think they know what the next-generation iPad looks like -- we've seen numerous pictures today of supposed cases all with the same features: a headphone jack, a hole for a camera on the back, just one dock connector (not two), and a mysterious slit on the bottom. Analysts raise AAPL price targets based on Verizon iPhone

Two analysts have raised their price targets for Apple stock, says Fortune. Stifel Nicolaus' Doug Reid has pushed his target from $360 to $390, working on "increased confidence" of a Verizon iPhone shipping in early 2011. He predicts a mid-February release date, but only 800,000 additional iPhone sales for the year, making for an adjusted global figure of 63.3 million. Most analysts have called for Verizon to contribute millions of additional units.

Nortel patent sale may see Apple, Google snap up 3G, 4G tech

A patent selloff by struggling Canadian tech firm Nortel Networks could see Apple, Google or RIM buy patents that tip the balance in their favor, a leak asserted on Thursday. Sales of 3G and LTE-based 4G patents are due to wrap up within weeks and could see the phone makers, along with Motorola, buy at least some of the patents to use either for products or for lawsuits. The Reuters sources couldn't get confirmation except from InterDigital, which files frequent lawsuits against phone makers.

iPad already matches Linux in web market share; will represent 2.3% of total net traffic in 2011

In an interesting Chitika research note, the internet advertising firm says the iPad is currently making up 0.83% of all internet traffic. When Chitika says "all internet traffic" they mean the 100,000+ sites they serve ads to. Still, if we can extrapoloate those numbers to the entire Internet, a 0.83% share of web traffic on a device that is less than a year old is nothing short of amazing -- especially when you consider that the iPad is going head to head with every other smart phone, laptop, and desktop on the planet in these numbers. Exclusive: PlayStation Phone 'Zeus Z1' prototype benchmarked on video

We can't get enough of Sony Ericsson's PlayStation Phone (also known as Zeus Z1), and we're guessing neither can you. We were just sent a new video of the device in action, only now it's running Qualcomm's Neocore benchmark app. As you can see, the device managed 24.4 frames per second on average. That doesn't seem like much -- our Nexus S, for example, just pulled off 55.6fps -- but bear in mind, this isn't the final software (or hardware probably), so there's no conclusions at all to draw from this benchmark right now. Toshiba power outage may hurt flash supply; Apple said safe

Toshiba today said it had a power outage at its Yokkaichi plant that could affect flash memory supply. The failure at 5:21AM yesterday stopped production and won't be fixed until sometime Friday. Without the two days of production, the company said it could lose as much as 20 percent of its planned flash shipments for January and February.

MacBook Air versus PowerBook 145B video smackdown

The oldsters at TUAW (yeah, I'm one of 'em) just love it when someone does a comparison of some nice new shiny Apple technology with Michael Spindler-era Apple products. Today's example comes from TUAW reader and Duke University sociology professor Kieran Healy, who kept the PowerBook 145B that helped him throughout grad school. As he says in the blog post accompanying the video (after the break), "despite being such a seemingly underpowered dinosaur, it (the Powerbook) nevertheless cold-booted faster than any computer I've owned since." Snapstick shows off iPhone-controlled internet TV prototype

It's still not an actual product just yet, but upstart Snaptick has given Crave an early look at its eponymously-named internet TV system, which it says will challenge the likes of Google TV and Apple TV. The company's hook is that it simply delivers the "full web" to your TV, which can be controlled using either your phone or a laptop. Split second power outage may lead to drop in Toshiba chip shipments

It's more than a little crazy to think about, but a 0.07-second power disruption in Japan yesterday may have just caused as much as a 20 percent drop in chip shipments from Toshiba. The root of the problem is that the backup system at Toshiba's Yokkaichi memory chip plant failed to kick in because the brief drop in voltage was more severe than the system was designed for, which has not only forced the plant to halt production until Friday, but may have caused irreparable damage to scores of chips in production at the time of the outage. While Apple continues to line up 3rd-party retailers, discount chain Costco is bailing out. The Seattle Times reports that Costco will begin to phase out all Apple products, though a timeline was not given. The retailer has been selling iPods and pre-paid iTunes gift cards for years. New iPad case shows curves, camera hole

Shenzhen MacTop Electronics has posted (English translation) a picture of what is supposedly a case for the next-generation iPad, complete with more pronounced curvature and a hole for a rear-facing camera. Also, the speaker slot (assuming that's what it is) is much larger than what's currently on the iPad. The tiny hole that we assume is for a camera is in the upper left-hand corner, similar to where the camera lives on the iPhone and iPod touch. Bereits vor einigen Monaten gab es Spekulationen zur 90-Sekunden-iTunes-Musik-Vorschau.Heute Nacht war es dann soweit:Apple bietet im iTunes Store statt einer 30 Sekunden Songvorschau, eine 90 Sekunden Vorschau an.Dies gilt allerdings auch nur für den US-Store, so müssen wir in Deutschland noch auf dieses Feature warten.Möglich wäre auch, dass wir für immer auf der 30 Sekunden-Preview sitzen bleiben, da Apple die Plattenfirmen erstmal von dem 90-Sekunden Konzept überzeugen muss, bevor es eingeführt werden kann.Wozu ist das ganze notwendig?Vielen reichte die 30 Sekunden Vorschau nicht, da Lieder teilweise an den blödesten Stellen beginnen und enden.MIt der 90 Sekunden-Preview bekommt man also einen viel besseren Überblick über den Song.

Erweiterte Previews vorerst nur in den USAApple hat damit begonnen, die Länge der Hörproben zu Musiktiteln von 30 auf 90 Sekunden zu erweitern. Vorerst allerdings nur im U.S.-amerikanischen iTunes Store und bei Songs mit einer Spielzeit von mindestens 2:30 Minuten. Bei kürzeren Titel bleibt es bei 30-Sekunden-Proben. Zur Stunde stehen die längeren Previews nur für einen Teil des Gesamtkataloges zur Verfügung, der Rest soll demnächst folgen. Another MacBook Air EFI firmware update available

Apple has released MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.0 for the newest MacBook Airs. The update addresses "a rare issue where MacBook Air boots or wakes to a black screen or becomes unresponsive," according to Apple, and it's a 2 MB download you can find either at the link above or via Software Update.
