Twitter's in-line media goes live with iTunes, Instagram
Twitter today switched on its promised integration of in-line media playback. The feature now enables iTunes previews on Twitter from those sharing links as well as from 19 other partners, including others previously limited to native apps. Instagram will leave its iOS app for the first time and show photos shared with Twitter sharing turned on.

Samsung LC11 pocket LTE router hits FCC, may see Verizon
Samsung may be the first to provide a portable router for Verizon's just-launched 4G network based on a newly discovered FCC filing. The SCH-LC11 would support LTE on the 750MHz band that should fit in Verizon's range, making it a prime candidate. It would also have an EVDO fallback for the majority of the network still using 3G.

QuickTime 7.6.9 out now, fixes a number of security issues
Apple has updated QuickTime to version 7.6.9, bringing out a whole slew of security fixes protecting against various "maliciously crafted" file formats. Apple has been working closely with security experts to hammer these out, and as a result, the software is much better protected against opening files designed to cause problems.

LG LU3000 taking its 1080p talents to South Korea in a week's time
Ah, LG's LU3000, the sprightly young thing that made the iPhone 4 and Galaxy S look a wee bit aged in some YouTube tests has now become official over in South Korea. It boasts a 1GHz TI OMAP3630 chip, allowing it to jot down 1080p video playback on its spec sheet, which in turn goes very nicely with the built-in HDMI port and DLNA wireless capabilities. A 3.8-inch screen offers an 800 x 480 resolution, there's a 5 megapixel camera around the back, and a mildly skinned Android 2.2 performs the OS duties. Skitch leaps out of beta, 1.0 available now
Since it debuted at Macworld in 2007, Skitch has become a favorite for many, many people. It's great at grabbing screenshots, adding annotations and notes, and sharing them on Skitch.com, Flickr, Mobile.me or even your own server. Bing's detailed mall directory maps improve Paul Blart's livelihood, should be on mobile
Mall maps integrated into an online mapping system? It's not exactly a minty fresh concept, but Microsoft has managed to seriously up the game with its Bingified mall directory maps. These zoomable, highly detailed maps help you see the layout and store count at a glance, with each click inside of a store yielding an exact address, phone number and links to 'Directions' / 'Send to Mobile.' Verizon chief says 4G could replace some land internet, TV
Verizon Chief Executive Ivan Seidenberg has said that he believes that the new Verizon 4G network could become a replacement for cable internet and TV services, according to a report. With speeds comparable to landline services, Seidenberg believes that ìcable cuttingî will become increasingly popular, especially in the medium to long term. Chrome 9 browser gets instant address bar, WebGL

OnLive iPad app now available, but doesn't support gameplay streaming yet
OnLive has finally released an iPad app called OnLive Viewer -- but it probably doesn't do what you want it to quite yet. The cloud gaming service OnLive has been making a name for itself since it went online recently, by streaming live gameplay out to Macs, PCs, and the company's official console box. A full iPad app from OnLive would be pretty amazing -- presumably, it would allow you to control and play any PC game directly on your iPad.

Crankshaft for Chrome gives dramatic leap to JavaScript
Google on Tuesday announced a new compilation infrastructure for V8, the JavaSript engine in Google Chrome. Called Crankshaft, it is said to more than double the speed of JavaScript apps in most cases, such as when loading web pages and applications created with complex JavaScript. FiOS TV coming to Mac, iOS in 2011
FiOS TV is coming to a Mac/iOS device near you. Sometime. In the future. We're not sure when.
From the More Of The Same Department comes a tease from Verizon's director of consumer product development, Joe Ambeault. In a brief video (after the break; apologies for Flash), Joe notes that his company is working on a FiOS app for the iPad, iPhone and Mac with a probable release date in early 2011. It's believed that the iPad app at least will require a Verizon Internet connection, and that Verizon is working on a video-on-demand service.

Google outs Cr-48 Chrome OS netbook; most pushed to mid-2011
Google at its Chrome event today unveiled Cr-48, a testbed netbook for Chrome OS. The 12-inch system is designed for early adopters willing to use Chrome OS in its beta state. It comes completely unbranded and has design touches rare on other netbooks, including an Apple-style clickable trackpad and a full keyboard that omits some traditional keys, such as Caps Lock and function keys.

FontXChange 3.0 for Mac expands support for web fonts
FontGear today launched FontXChange 3.0 for the Mac. The new version adds extended conversion support for emerging web standards like WOFF, SVG and EOT. Google launches Chrome Web Store, shows full Kindle for Web
Google today formally launched the Chrome Web Store, its portal for web apps on both the Chrome browser and Chrome OS. The section lets users buy apps that they can access from a central launcher and which behave more like traditional apps, in some cases working offline. Macworld reveals Editors' Choice Award winners
For the 26th consecutive year, Macworld has announced the winners of the Editors' Choice Awards. While the online article announcing the winners makes it sound like the awards are for Mac hardware and software only, it's open to just about any product that works with Macs or other Apple devices.

Google unveils Cr-48, the first Chrome OS laptop
We've had plenty of pre-knowledge on this, but surprisingly this is our first actual glimpse of Google's new unbranded "Cr-48," the very first Chrome OS laptop. Google will distribute the laptop through its Chrome OS Pilot Program, in a sort of public beta. Yoomi and Duo create unique iPad game
Yoomi is an iPad game (free) which, when combined with the Duo hardware, offers a unique tabletop gaming experience. It looks like a fun combination of software and hardware, and it's something we haven't seen before as it requires no dock connector link. Here's how it works.
Yoomi is a simple guessing game for three or four players. Each player receives a pile of colored chips, and the Duo is placed on the iPad's screen. The game begins when the iPad displays two pictures. One player selects a picture in secret, as the Duo hides their fingers, and the remaining players try to guess his/her choice by placing a chip on the Duo near the corresponding image.

Google just demoed Chrome OS running on a piece of reference hardware at its event in SF. It just takes four steps and less than a minute to set up a brand-new Chrome OS machine -- it pulls all your Chrome themes and settings from the cloud, so it's ready to go almost right away, and changes can propagate in less than a second in some cases. The reference machine demoed was able to come back up from sleep almost instantly -- Google says the limiting factor is actually how fast the user can move their hand. Spotify backtracks on 2010 plans, denies Apple influence
Spotify chief Daniel Ek in his interview at D: Dive Into Mobile dropped his aims of a US launch in 2010. He was still hopeful for a US deal but now "canít commit to a specific date." App Review: Let's Catch The Lion! is cute, strategic fun
The new Let's Catch The Lion! board game app looks cute as all get out, and to be fair, it is designed as a kids' game. But this Shogi (Japanese Chess) variant is a worthwhile download from the App Store even for board gamers who don't have a child in the house. Google spruces up Chrome with Instant Search from the Omnibox, other nerdy things
It's a big Chrome day for Google today, and they're kicking things off with new features for the browser itself. The real highlight is the addition of Instant Search to Chrome's famed "Omnibox." It works about as you'd expect: as you type a Google search you still get your regular suggestions, but you also get a full search results page loading and refreshing live as you type. It hasn't been that long since we first saw Google's web store -- mid-May, to be exact. An updated version is currently being showcased on stage at the Chrome event. Kehrtwende: Hetzner erlaubt nun doch Wikileaks-Mirrors
Der Webhoster Hetzner korrigiert seine Position zum Hosten von Mirror-Servern, die Wikileaks-Material verbreiten. Apple ousts Nokia as top Australian smartphone vendor
Apple has displaced Nokia as the top smartphone vendor in Australia, says the Sydney Morning Herald. New IDC figures indicate that the iPhone represents roughly 36.5 percent of the local market. Nokia has slipped to second place with 30.5 percent of smartphones, though the company still leads in overall cellphone sales with 37.6 percent.

A new petition has been started following Apple's rejection of several non-profit donation applications. The petition, which is being hosted on Care2, has gained quick support seeing over 1,000 signatures added in only a few days. According to the creators of the petition, Apple claims that it does not want to be help responsible for making sure donations reach the proper location. OnLive expands to apps, shows Maya 'running' on an iPad
OnLive at the D: Dive Into Mobile show today expanded its scope beyond just gaming with plans to stream regular apps and websites to other devices. The company targeted it at mobile users and showed apps and features running through the OnLive Viewer iPad client (free, App Store) that wouldn't have been possible otherwise. Users could run an instance of Internet Explorer with Flash on Apple's tablet, or even a high-end professional rendering app like Autodesk's Maya, chief executive Steve Perlman proved on stage.

U.S. government hits snag printing new $100 bills, prints old ones instead
The U.S. Treasury Department may have been eager to open the doors to its money printing factory back in July to show off its brand new $100 bills, but it looks to be a decidedly different story today. As CNBC reports, all of the added security measures have apparently been harder to print than expected, and have resulted in a creasing problem that has left some bills with a blank portion on the face. Combined sales of smartphones and tablets to surpass the humble PC in 18 months, says IDC
Our supply checks say that 10 out of 10 analysts are insanely bullish about tablets -- despite the fact that there are only 2.5 competitive products on the market, and one of them only came out a month ago. Early mistakes hurt iPhone's potential, says analyst
Apple has committed two "meaningful errors" since launching the iPhone in 2007, argues Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. He notes that at first, Apple did not get subsidies for the iPhone, keeping the cost as high as $599 for an 8GB model. That price soon dropped to $399 however, and an 8GB iPhone 3GS can now be bought for $99. The most expensive current model, a 32GB version of the iPhone 4, is still only $299. Apple is third-largest portable maker with iPad included
Merging the iPad with Apple's notebook shipment numbers would make it the third-largest portable computer maker in the world, DisplaySearch said in a new study. Adding the 4.2 million tablets would give Apple 6.3 million shipments, it said, pushing it above Dell (6.1 million) and Toshiba (4.3 million). The result was actually low as it was based on preliminary figures; Apple's official results saw it ship over 2.6 million MacBooks and nearly 4.2 million iPads, or 6.8 million portables in total.

Apple beats Nokia as top smartphone maker in Australia
The world domination of the iPhone continues as Apple has overtaken Nokia to be the number one smartphone vendor in Australia. According to analysts reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, Apple accounts for 36.5 percent of the smartphone market versus Nokia's 30.5 percent share.
Nokia became the top dog of Australian smartphones in 2002 when it beat out Palm. Nokia is still the top overall mobile phone maker with 37.6 percent of the total market, but Apple has supplanted Nokia in smartphones three years after the iPhone's Australian release.

Artist David Hockney displays art made with iPhone, iPad in Paris
David Hockney's art created by iPhone and iPad is currently on display at the Pierre Berge-Yves St. Laurent Foundation in Paris. When Hockney first got his iPhone a few years ago, he immediately recognized its capability to create art. Each day, Hockney paints flowers and sunsets with his device and sends those images to friends. Those paintings are now hanging in a show called "Fresh Flowers," displayed on 20 iPhones and 20 iPads.

FiOS TV coming to Mac, iOS in early 2011
FiOS TV access should reach Mac and iOS devices sometime in early 2011, says Verizon's director of consumer product development, Joe Ambeault. The technology is meant for existing FiOS TV subscribers, and for the iPad app, at least, will require home Verizon Internet access to authenticate a device. AT&T today reiterated increasing clues that the iPhone's US exclusivity deal was coming to an end. iTunes sending free TV rentals to some users
9to5 Mac is reporting today that some iTunes users received promotional codes good for 1 free TV rental from iTunes. As far as anyone can tell, there's no obvious rhyme or reason as to how they were distributed.
Perhaps they want to stress test their iTunes streaming services a bit. You'll remember that Apple said the North Carolina data center should be operational by "year's end." Peel 520 maker looks to legitimize case with Apple seal
The maker of the Peel 520, GoSolarUSA, has announced that it is now looking for Apple's approval. The case lets iPod touch owners make voice calls and send text messages, mimicking some of the functionality of the iPhone, although Internet access is still limited to Wi-Fi. NVIDIA rolls out GeForce GTX 570 at lower $350 price tag
NVIDIA today confirmed its second-ever GeForce 500 series chipset in a push to bring its new graphics to the mainstream. The GTX 570 has the exact same 480 cores as the old GTX 480 but, through the refined architecture, runs at a higher 732MHz main clock speed, 1.46GHz clock for each core and a 1.9GHz memory clock. It uses a narrower 320-bit memory interface (down from 384 bits) but, due to the combined improvements, has a higher texture fill rate bumped up from 42 billion to 43.9 billion pixels per second.

iPhone 4 in scarce supply in China, says analyst
The iPhone 4 is perhaps the most difficult Apple product to find in China, claims a Ticonderoga Securities analyst, Brian White. Continuing a tour of the country, White notes that local wait times for the iPhone 4 are now closer to two months; he suggests that official carrier China Unicom is unable to fill roughly a third of pre-orders. Samsung may ship 18 percent more phones in 2011, rival Nokia
Samsung could jump ahead of estimates and possibly the phone industry in 2011, a company official was reported as saying on Tuesday. South Korea's ET News quoted an unnamed official who said the company had an "internal goal" to ship 330 million cellphones next year, or an 18 percent jump over this year's estimated 280 million. Digitimes berichtet davon, dass Foxconn kürzlich von Apple die Order bekommen hat, innerhalb der nächsten 100 Tage das iPad 2 zu liefern, die erste Lieferung soll zwischen 400 000 und 600 000 Einheiten umfassen. Schlachtroboter HAMDAS-R entbeint Schinken, erhöht Produktivität um Alb-Faktor 10

Man wünscht sich unwillkürlich, dass der Roboter HAMDAS-R ein Fake ist, aber dem scheint nicht so zu sein: Der Bot fürs Ausbeinen von Hinterschinken soll die Produktivität beim Schlachten verdoppeln und wird nebenbei für neue Albtraumszenarien sorgen. Entwickelt wurde der Schlachterbot von der japanischen Firma Mayekawa Electric, deren Sprecher im Video nach dem Break stolz erklärt, welchen Durchbruch HAMDAS-R bedeutet, denn unregelmäßig gewachsenes Fleisch wechselnder Konsistenz hat sich bislang vielen automatischen Verarbeitungsschritten frech widersetzt. Ein Nerd mit dem Instructables-Nick uiproductions hat eine Star-Trek-Tür für den Hausgebrauch ausgetüftelt, die ziemlich solide und ausgefuchst wirkt, sogar an die Luftzirkulation zwischen den Räumen wurde hier gedacht, damit die Pneumatik keine Druckunterschiede zwischen den Zimmern erzeugt. Und falls man die Tür einfach geöffnet haben will, kann sie mittels Schlüssel neben dem Tür-auf-Knopf auch festgestellt werden. Das beste an der Konstruktion ist allerdings der satte Luftdruck-Sound. Netflix caused a lot of head scratching in October when it started rolling out its new, disc-free Netflix experience for the PS3. Warm up your credit cards: Digitimes reports that the next-generation iPad may start shipping as early as late February of 2011. Digitimes' Taiwanese sources claim that Foxconn, Apple's leading product manufacturer, will ship the next-gen iPad within the next 100 days, with an initial shipment run of 400,000-600,000 units.
The current iPad, announced in late January, was not available for sale in the US until early April (WiFi-only) and late April (3G). Adobe updates Lightroom to v3.3, Camera Raw to v6.3
Adobe today updated its high-end image-management and editing application Lightroom to v3.3, correcting numerous bugs but mainly adding support for lens profiles created by the user community. A companion application, Lens Profile Downloader v1, offers 300 lens correction profiles and the ability to create and share new ones. The company also updated its Camera Raw plug-in to v6.3 with support for 15 new models and 60 new lenses.

iPad 2 begins shipping from Foxconn in February?
The source is DigiTimes so take this rumor for what you will. Nevertheless, the Taiwanese tattle house is citing sources at local component makers claiming that Foxconn has been notified that it must ship Apple's "iPad 2" within the next 100 days or as early as the end of February. DigiTimes says that Apple's plan to start mass production in January has been delayed. DIY Star-Trek style air powered sliding doors are something from the future that you can have at home right now
So, we don't mind a small home renovation project every now and then, and this is one we're seriously considering. Instructables has posted a step-by-step guide on installing sliding doors which are powered by an air compressor, and which look super cool. As you'll see in the video which is after the break, it's a pretty simple idea, which requires a pretty fair amount of work, but the results are very impressive. iOS 4.2 prevents some USB devices from working via Camera Connection Kit
According to 9to5Mac, changes introduced in iOS 4.2 have caused Apple's Camera Connection Kit to become a lot less useful for iPad owners. As of iOS 4.2, the amount of electricity the iPad's 30-pin dock connector can put out has apparently been slashed from 100mA to 20mA. Android 2.3 Gingerbread in pictures
You may not be able to get Android 2.3 loaded in any official capacity on your Nexus One yet -- or any other phone, for that matter -- but Google's 2.3 SDK is now available, which means there's an emulator attached, too. Rubin shows prototype MotoPad, promises 3D Google Maps
Google VP Andy Rubin as part of his talk at D: Dive Into Mobile tonight showed off a prototype of Motorola's MotoPad. He used the likely seven-inch device to show off an upcoming version of Google Maps and confirmed some of the suspected details, including the use of a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and a front-facing camera for video chat. It would use Honeycomb (Android 3.0), which will have tablet optimizations such as splitting the display into multiple views.

Sure, Google might have just dropped Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the Nexus S just today, but that's old news -- Andy Rubin just took the stage at D: Dive Into Mobile and announced that Honeycomb is due "next year" with support for tablets. Rubin: craplets are a 'feature' of Android, iPhone is open
Unwanted, preloaded carrier software is an advantage for Android, the company's engineering VP Andy Rubin said Monday night at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference. When asked about Google's refusal to ban "craplets," or apps dictated by the carrier, Rubin considered it a plus. Foxconn said shipping next iPad in February for April launch
Foxconn is due to start shipping finished iPads in late February for a launch less than two months later, part suppliers said Monday night. The company reportedly has an initial order of 400,000 to 600,000 of Apple's tablets at its main Shenzhen factory to deliver them for a release in early April, one year after the original debut. Production would have started in January, but Apple is still said by Digitimes to be testing new firmware and to have postponed production to ensure it was ready.

iPad accounts for 8 percent of global mobile PC shipments
Apple is the number one mobile PC manufacturer in North America and third overall in the world, according to published results from research company DisplaySearch. While these rankings account for all of Apple's mobile computers combined, the iPad accounted for 8 percent of mobile computer shipments in the third quarter alone, a decent percentage of the 55 million mobile PC units shipped for the three month period. With the majority of these iPad sales going just to North America, Apple should increase that percentage once it pushes further into up-and-coming markets in Asia and the Middle East.

Apple is e-mailing iTunes users a coupon good for a free movie rental -- apparently at random, 9to5 Mac reports. Apple Stores now selling iPad gift cards
Apple has begun selling their signature silver gift cards inside "iPad Gift Card" packaging just in time for the holiday rush. iLounge says that although the cards themselves aren't anything different than the ones I normally get from family as Christmas gifts, they can now be used to purchase an iPad. When I bought my current iPhone I tried to use gift cards and wasn't allowed to do so -- Apple mandated that customers had to use a debit or a credit card -- but I guess this is a change in company policy.

Google's really been big today on emphasizing that Gingerbread is better than ever for game development, and that's already bearing itself out thanks to a page culled from the Android 2.3 SDK where we see a handful of new keycodes in the system clearly targeted for gaming: L1, L2, R1, R2, Select, Start, and so on. Does it have anything to do with the Sony Ericsson Zeus Z1 and all the PlayStation phone noise, though? Swarm Light is an $180k LED chandelier controlled by an iPhone
This thing you see in the video on the next page (and in the picture above) is called the "Swarm Light." It's a series of little LEDs hung in sequence along three clusters of grids, lit up in order by a computer to display simulated collective movement, like a swarm of bees. It's very interesting, both as a display for a programmed algorithm, and just as an art project. All together, the display costs $180,000 -- no small chunk of change.

FCC white space wireless rules take effect January 5
The Federal Register (PDF) today revealed that the FCC's white space wireless rules would take effect on January 5. The milestone will clear companies to start using the frequencies between channels and will also require the promised white space database to tell companies and users which airwaves are free. One company is expected to manage the database, but the FCC's Hugh Van Tuyl said that the agency was still determining who would be responsible and wasn't tied to the January 5 date.

AT&T rated worst cellphone provider by Consumer Reports
Remember when Consumer Reports couldn't recommend the iPhone 4? Well, now Consumer Reports has released the results of a satisfaction survey which shows that according to over 50,000 of their readers, AT&T is the lowest-scoring cell-phone carrier in the United States. RIM gives lengthy PlayBook demo at Rogers conference, confirms 4G is on tap

A2 Smart Pen digitizes writing on standard paper
Apen has expanded its series of Smart Pens with the A2, a new model that works with Mac and Windows computers. The pen digitizes and records writing and drawing on standard paper, rather than requiring users to purchase special paper. LiveCode for iOS deployment pack released
Runtime Revolution have formally released its LiveCode Deployment Pack for iOS devices, allowing users of the LiveCode cross-platform development environment to rapidly build either custom in-house apps or commercial projects. Although a pre-release version was included with LiveCode 4.5.1, this new update is the final finished version. Android activations level at 214K per day, hint at slowdown
Google's Android sales rate may have leveled off, according to details the company gave out with the Nexus S launch on Monday. It reported that it was activating about 1.5 million Android devices of all kinds each week, or just over 214,000 devices each day. The figure is just a small step up from 200,000 per day in August and a much smaller increase than with its previous growth rate.
