Is the iPad hurting netbook sales?

It's starting to look like it. DigiTimes, which covers IT news in and around Taiwan and China, notes that both Hewlett-Packard and Acer are getting deliveries on hardware that are smaller than expected. Component makers say that "vendors are clearing inventories, which were high partly due to competition from tablet PCs." HP originally was expected to take 4 million netbook deliveries, and instead the company is getting 3.7 million. Hertz to start renting all-electric Smart Fortwo EDs next week

RIM shows newer PlayBook UI, talks iPad and 4G

RIM's David Neale at the same event that detailed Rogers' PlayBook plans also showed a demo of the device itself (video below) and took several shots at Apple in the process. Running a daily build of the BlackBerry Tablet OS, the slate was shown using swipe gestures to manage its multitasking interface much like the card system in HP's webOS. Danish tabloid takes Jobs, Apple to task for prudish rules

A Danish tabloid, Ekstra Bladet, has taken to pillorying Apple and its CEO over the rejection of an iOS app, Fortune writes. The Danish newspaper has a regular feature called "Side 9," depicting a topless or fully naked woman. Google Books finally went live in App Store and we here at TUAW couldn't wait to give it a try. Unfortunately, we should have. Fring adds Dynamic Video Quality to its video calling apps

iOS 4.2 said to be blocking iPad Camera Kit from supporting some USB devices

It seems that folks hoping for the Apple's Camera Connection Kit to solve all their USB-related iPad problems just can't catch a break. Cisco intros WebEx for iPad 2.0

Cisco has released v2.0 of WebEx for iPad. The app lets users participate in online WebEx meetings, which allow for audio and data communication. The title now also supports video, with up to four separate streams selectable through a carousel. Apple's iBooks e-reading app is a flawed, early generation application with GUI and organization issues that fail to match the way that I read books. It has no folders (yet), no way of marking "I've finished reading this book so put it away" (a la the Kindle with its archive feature). Its store is understocked and overpriced. Those are hardly unique criticisms, though -- these flaws permeate throughout the new and under-developed book reader world. So when push comes to shove, I'm sticking with iBooks. White iPhone 4 reportedly due spring of 2011

If you have been holding out for a white iPhone 4, you might only have another three or four months to wait. We reported last month that the white iPhone had been delayed until spring, and now we have confirmation of sorts from Apple. A number of our readers pinged TUAW over the weekend with news of the new iPhone signage at Apple Stores, which (if you read the fine print) notes that "The White iPhone will be available spring 2011." In case you've forgotten when spring begins, that date in 2011 is March 20, with the season stretching until June 21. Apple could theoretically wait until June 21 to release the white iPhone 4, thus keeping their word while driving hordes of potential buyers stark raving mad.

Apple Store shoplifting incident helps solve rash of thefts

The arrest of two men following an incident at an Apple Store in Tampa, Florida appears to have solved a series of thefts in the area, a local Fox affiliate says. At the International Plaza Apple outlet, a customer spotted two men grabbing iPads from a stack on wall display. After reporting the theft, a mall security guard is said to have confronted the shoplifters in the parking lot, who sped away in a vehicle after dropping the stolen iPads.

Sehr rarer transparenter Apple Mac SE sucht Abnehmer

Apple-Devotionalien stehen hoch im Kurs. Nachdem vor kurzem noch der Proto-Mac Apple I versteigert wurde, gibt es nun diesen sehr seltenen Mac SE im transparenten Gehäuse. Insgesamt 10 Stück gab es überhaupt davon und wurden damals für Apple-Mitarbeiter der R&D-Abteilung gebaut. Nun gab es auf eBay eines dieser SEs zum Einstiegspreis von 25.000 Dollar. Tired of having his iPhone run out of juice halfway through the day, Dutch designer Tjeerd Veenhoven has created the iFan charging case. Acer, HP still facing dip in notebooks due to iPad

Both Acer and HP are still seeing drops in notebook shipment numbers owed in part to an ongoing iPad effect, PC component firms claimed on Monday. The companies were originally slated to have shipped 3.6 million and four million notebooks each in November but have reportedly had to scale back to maximums of three million and 3.4 million, a reduction of 600,000 below what each had originally thought.
