PayPal app has huge security flaw, update rushed to Apple
You'd think by now we'd all be wary of open WiFi networks, and luckily that's the only way this could affect you, but if you use the PayPal app on an open network the Wall Street Journal is reporting a hacker could potentially nab your user account.
According to the story, the app doesn't verify your security certificate (which is kind of the point of the certificate, no?) and goes along its merry way, transmitting your data to PayPal in a way that a fortuitous ne'er do well could intercept. News Corp may axe MySpace if not turned around
News Corp might chop MySpace if it doesn't turn around within the next several months, the company's Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey said during a quarterly fiscal results call today. After a $70 million drop in revenue and plummeting traffic, the executive said the results were "not acceptable or sustainable" and implied the site would shut down if it wasn't fixed. A timetable wasn't given, but MySpace's timeframe would be measured "in quarters, not in years," Carey said.

AT&T: T-Mobile's '4G' claim is wrong, our HSPA+ is larger
AT&T today took issue with some of T-Mobile's HSPA+ claims. The carrier not only noted that its now launching network has a peak of 21Mbps, not the 14.4Mbps argued by T-Mobile. It likewise disagreed with T-Mobile's insistence that its network was the largest, since AT&T's HSPA+ was potentially reachable by 180 million users today versus T-Mobile's 140 million.

OLPC XO-3 debut delayed till February as the quest continues for an 'unbreakable' screen

New York Times iPad app gets bug fix but still somewhat flaky
The New York Times for iPad app has received a much-needed update. The first version, introduced in the middle of October, replaced the older free Editor's Choice app, which only had a small subset of Times content. This new version is free but only temporarily, as the newspaper intends to start charging sometime in 2011.
I've been using the full content version since it came out. It crashed frequently, enough to make the app unappealing, and ultimately unusable. Today's update is not plagued with the aggravating crashes of version 1, but it is still far from

Apple leak details 'acceptable' levels of stuck pixels
Apple has updated a secret policy on how many "acceptable" stuck pixels a device LCD can have before repair or replacement is authorized, a source claims in regard to a leaked document. "The Apple Confidential specifications provided here are not for release to customers," a portion of the text reads. Don't hold your breath for a Facebook iPad app
While many of us (including me) are clamoring for an official iPad Facebook app, Mark Zuckerberg pretty much dashed any hopes for one at today's Facebook Mobile Event. When asked why there wasn't an official iPad app yet, Zuckerberg replied, "The iPad isn't mobile." Uh, what?

Artist creates real-life home icon
Artist Johannes P. Osterhoff (whom you may remember from his paintings using OS X elements) has been reusing Apple's interface elements again. His latest project is a real-life construction of the Home icon from OS X, which he's made into a wearable display. The doors and shutters are actually real (if a little small), there are real curtains in the windows, and there are two straps on the back to haul the piece of art around.

Twitter for Android updated, adds speed, polish, more options
It's not just Facebook for Android that's getting an update today -- Twitter just pushed out a new version of its Android app, and while it doesn't add a ton of new features, it's gotten a big speed boost and some polish. The biggest addition is pull-to-refresh, which the iPhone client has had for a while, as an option bar that's revealed by swiping on a tweet. Free Realms now available for Mac players

iTunes 90-second 'ultimatum' aimed at indies, talks still on
Apple's 90-second iTunes sample deal has already been reached with major music labels but is simply being pushed on indies, tips from the inside revealed today. EMI, Sony, Universal and Warner have all reportedly signed off so far along with some individual publishers, while the blanket notice to smaller labels was sent without them having reached an agreement. Labels talking to CNET couldn't provide detailed comment but, in two cases, agreed Apple was using hardline tactics by making labels automatically accept the deal just by staying in the store.

Updated Facebook app released for iPhone and iPod touch
TechCrunch reports that Mark Zuckerberg showed off the new version of his company's Facebook for iPhone app at today's Mobile Event. Facebook v3.3 adds a new Groups feature and also updates the existing Places feature. Among the improvements to Places, it will now be easier to tag your friends into a venue and it will be easier to add photos alongside a check-in. The update also features a Deals function that lets you "discover great deals around you" (translation: here comes the location-based advertising).

Creative's 7- and 10-inch ZiiO Android tablets get the hands-on treatment
They're cheap, they can't access the Android Market and they're rocking resistive touchscreens. They're the two newest devices from the lairs at Creative, and the folks over at PCPro were able to spend a few quality minutes with both the 7- and 10-inch ZiiO slates. They noted that the ZiiLabs ZMS-08 processor managed to handle the Android 2.1 load quite well, and while they definitely would've preferred a capacitive, multitouch display, they managed without one. HTC seeing genuine strong demand for Windows Phone 7
HTC has had stronger sales than it expected for its Windows Phone 7 devices in the launches so far, Taiwan-area phone makers claimed on Wednesday. Phones like the HD7 and 7 Mozart were already selling out at O2 Germany and Australia's Telstra respectively. Low supply problems were a factor, but there was also surprise interest, they told Digitimes.

Lawsuit accuses Apple of crippling iPhone 3G to boost sales
A new lawsuit, filed in the Superior Court of California for San Diego, accuses Apple of intentionally crippling the iPhone 3G in order to push people into buying the iPhone 4. When iOS 4 was released it was marketed as compatible with the 3G, albeit in a form missing key features like multitasking. People began complaining of buggy and lethargic performance as well, however, issues not witnessed by owners of the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4.

News: Apple’s dead pixel policy revealed in leaked doc?

Seit gestern gibt es den Skyfire Browser für iOS-Geräte im App Store. 2,39 € kostet der Browser, dessen Entwickler sich damit rühmen, endlich das Flash-Problem gelöst zu haben. Der Code wird in Echtzeit umgemuddelt, so dass auch Videos im nicht unterstützten Flash-Standard auf iPhone und Co. abgespielt werden sollen. Das funktioniert. Aber mehr schlecht als recht. Die Aufbereitung der Daten dauerte auf dem iPhone 4 in unserem kurzen Versuch sehr lang, die starke Kompression war deutlich sichtbar, außerdem schienen Ton und Bild nicht mehr ganz synchron. Credit Card Machine 1.3 supports magnetic reader attachment
Paynet Systems has updated its credit card processing iPhone app, releasing Credit Card Machine 1.3. The app allows iPhone users to accept credit cards for payment. The new version has the ability to swipe credit cards using a secure magnetic reader attached to the user's iPhone. SnycMate 3 beta allows direct sync between Macs, Android
Eltima has launched a beta of its new SyncMate software, featuring direct sync for Android phones. The software already syncs Macs with Windows Mobile and Nokia S40 phones, and offered a workaround using Google accounts for Android users. Version 3 offers direct Android to Mac syncing, with mounting in the finder for a full view of the phone's content, over WiFi, USB and Bluetooth. Sync with a Google account is still included in v3 as an option. The software can also sync with other Macs, PCs, Sony PSPs and USB flash drives.

Some Game Center-enabled iPad games appearing on App Store already
iOS 4.2 isn't quite out yet, but 9to5Mac has already spotted some Game Center-enabled iPad games out on the App Store. Big Bad Sudoku Book is an iPad app that's apparently good to go already, presenting the Game Center icon with its listing.
Of course, without the actual firmware, there's not much to do with any leaderboards you top or achievements you earn -- for those, you'll have to wait until the actual iPad firmware to arrive (which it should soon, at some point this month). But given that Game Center is integrated with an iTunes account, achievements earned on your iPad should show up on your iPhone, and eventually vice versa.

Skyfire browser for iPhone hits the App Store, ready to play your Flash videos
It's been over two months since it was first submitted for approval, but the Skyfire 2.0 web browser for iPhone is now finally, officially available for download, complete with the ability to play Flash videos sort of. Facebook lets third-party apps update locations, adds Deals
Facebook during its special mobile event today changed some of the fundamental structure of its mobile platform to bolster third-party apps and add Foursquare-style deals. Android and iPhone apps will now have access to the write and search components of the Places location interface. The update allows apps to not only check into Places themselves but to search and take advantage of the new mobile feature set.

37Signals' Chalk, iPad-only collaborative web app
37Signals is well-known as the developer of some powerful collaboration tools for the Web like Campfire and Basecamp. It's obvious that the employees of the company know how to use a chalkboard to sketch out flow charts, scrawl UI mockups, and so on.

Table Connect for iPhone demonstrated on video, makes us want
Sure, showing an image and boasting wildly is one thing, but it's another thing entirely to see something as outlandish as this functioning on video. The gurus behind the Table Connect for iPhone have returned, using a jailbroken iPhone, a dedicated app (for now) and a freshly washed hand to demonstrate what iOS looks like on a 58-inch multitouch table. Apple grabs Edinburgh store, changes holiday retail layouts
Apple has finalized plans to build a store in Edinburgh, Scotland, according to local newspaper the Edinburgh Journal. Talks were first reported as being underway early last month. While the future outlet will definitely be located along Princes Street, Edinburgh's main shopping road, an exact address has not been revealed. Speculation has focused on construction currently taking place at 122 and 123 Princes; 121 is being demolished entirely.

Five months after the iPad’s launch in the country, Apple has finally begun offering new release titles on the Australian iBookstore. Apple iBookstore has opened in Australia
Just over six months have passed since the launch of the iPad, and today, the iBookstore has now officially opened in Australia.
Quoting an Apple spokesperson, The Age reports that the good folks down under now have access to "thousands" of new titles from a wide array of publishers including Macmillan, Hachette, HarperCollins, Hardie Grant, Murdoch Publishers and Wiley.

FTC approves Intel settlement change, will let it ship Oak Trail without PCIe support
Well, it looks like Intel's settlement with the FTC isn't quite a done deal just yet -- the FTC has now announced that it's approved a change to one key measure of the settlement following a public comment period on the matter. That specifically involves Intel's Atom-based Oak Trail platform, which Intel will now be allowed to ship without PCI Express support -- as opposed to the earlier stipulation that it be required to support PCIe in order to "not limit the performance of graphics processing chips." App Review: Neuroshima Hex is good, about to get a lot better
The new board game app that's based on the 2006 tabletop game Neuroshima Hex is a lot of things. For a cardboard hex-based game that's reproduced in your pocket, Neuroshima Hex is gorgeous. The artwork is wonderfully clear on a Retina Display, and the part-apocalyptic, part-1950s sci-fi style graphics are very fitting. The gameplay combines tricks from a miniatures-based war game with abstract strategy titles. The music and sound effects are also well done, adding to the tension and mood of the battles. AppleCare now transferable to new purchases within 30 days
According to an Apple Internal memo not yet release to the public, Apple will now allow transferring an AppleCare agreement on a product bought within the last 30 days to a another product of the same type. Previously, the policy stated that AppleCare must be canceled and then repurchased if you wanted it to cover another product you own. If you gift or sell your covered product to someone else, AppleCare could always be transferred with a simple phone call.

Mac-based autonomous rovers at MacTech Conference 2010
We're here at the MacTech conference, and as everyone checked in and got breakfast there was a demonstration of some clever Mac-based rover robots designed and built by a team at the University of Arizona. The brainchildren of Professor Wolfgang Fink, these robots are designed to be autonomous and use a Mac mini inside to provide a modicum of intelligence. For demonstration purposes, however, the robots were being controlled by iPod touches.
I spoke briefly with Professor Fink's colleague Mark Tarbell about the robots. He told me the Mac minis in these models still use platter-based hard drives, although he expressed the intention to someday use SSDs for reliability. Currently the Macs are protected in a

AOL: Gewinn steigt um 132 Prozent trotz sinkendem Umsatz

OS X Dock built using CSS 3, new iTunes style app icons
Web developer Michael Hüneburg has been experimenting recently with the new capabilities enabled by the latest version of the cascading style sheets standard, CSS3. Among other things, CSS3 now offers the ability to create animations triggered by a mouse over or click. Hüneburg used those features to code a replica of the Mac OS X dock.

comScore: Android took share from all but iPhone
Apple's record iPhone 4 sales helped keep Android from taking its US market share in the summer, comScore said today. Apple's American share stayed flat at 24.3 percent and let it keep its share where every other smartphone maker lost ground to devices using Android. Portabler Kühlschrank Koolie ist dekadent aber toll

Electrolux hat auch dieses Jahr sein "Design Lab" am Start, das traditionell bemerkenswerte Konzepte hervorbringt. 2010 wurde hier Koolie als eines der innovativsten Designs gewürdigt, wogegen man allerdings einiges einwenden kann, allem voran dass ein portabler Kühlschrank wohl höchstens eine Komfortlücke schließt und dafür ordentlich Energie verbraucht. Ganz egoistisch finden wir das Teil unterdessen einfach toll und wollen eins haben, wobei wir Koolie natürlich niemals zum Einkaufen per RFID-Check benutzen würden.

Personal shopping discontinued in Apple Stores
Apple retail stores are typically very busy places. While the staff are very helpful, customers generally have to wait around a bit before being served. Fortunately, Apple has offered a reservation system for services like the Genius Bar and training sessions. Unfortunately, one previously available service, personal shopping now seems to be gone.
With personal shopping, customers could make an appointment up to two weeks in advance to have a staff member provide personalized assistance in picking out the right ways to spend money in the store. It's not clear why the service has been discontinued but customers can still get help with selecting the right Apple products. The only difference is that they'll now need to stand in line. HP responds to Jobs about touchscreen PCs
Steve Jobs has never been averse to exaggeration or verbal misdirection when discussing features publicly. However, Hewlett-Packard's Ken Bosley has taken issue with Jobs' recent comments on touchscreen PCs.
During the recent Back to the Mac press event, Steve had this to say: "Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical. It gives great demo but after a short period of time, you start to fatigue and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off. It doesn't work; it's ergonomically terrible."

During last September's press event, representatives from Epic Games demonstrated "Project Sword," an impresive title running the Unreal Engine inside iOS. Today, that game has been re-named Infinity Blade and new screenshots have been released.

AppleCare plans now transferable between products
Apple has slightly loosened the restrictions of its AppleCare warranty plans, a leaked memo shows. Retroactive to October 28th, people who want to can now transfer any existing AppleCare plan to a new product. WiGig, VESA team up on wireless DisplayPort
The WiGig Alliance and the VESA display group today said they were working together on developing a wireless DisplayPort standard. Both groups plan to share technology that would allow for "multi-gigabit" bandwidth and display quality as good as a wired DisplayPort connection over the air. Lee Unkrich is the director behind the Toy Story series, A Bug's Life, Monsters, Inc., and Finding Nemo. Those are, of course, just a few of his accomplishments. ITC: Nokia unlikely to be violating Apple patents
Apple's ITC complaints against Nokia are unlikely to hold up, the ITC said in a pre-hearing notice. Investigators working in advance have claimed that some elements of the patents are simply invalid while others weren't violated by the Nokia phones as part of the case. While the possibility remained that the Commission could still rule in favor of Apple, it would limit bans to specific phones rather than a blanket restriction on all the phones covered in the dispute.

New Apple patent features video editing innovation and simplification
Apple is already pretty tight with the film production industry. Final Cut Pro has a big chunk of the high-end editing business, and Apple continues innovating to keep their spot secure. A 2007 survey showed that Final Cut Pro had 49 percent of the professional editing market.
A new patent granted to Apple, number 7,827,489, describes a system to make it easier for filmmakers to edit to tape. Most editing today is non-linear, with the video and audio on a hard disk that allows random access. Apple proposes that the media clips get transferred to a sequential medium (tape) for storage. Analyst: Apple's sales in China could triple in two years
Here's more good news for Apple from the Chinese front: Katy Huberty and Mathew Schneider from Morgan Stanley have released a report saying that Apple could make as much as $9 billion from China in the fiscal year of 2012, as opposed to $2.9 billion in the last fiscal year. That kind of growth would be better than the rest of the world, which means that if there are any problems with Apple's revenue in the US and Europe over the next few years, China will likely make up for them.

Bei unserem 13-Zoll MacBook Air ist soweit alles in Ordnung, aber es scheint bei diversen Leuten Ärger zu machen: laut Cult of Mac, Macworld und diversen Einträgen in Apples User-Foren kommt es wohl vermehrt zu Kernel-Panics, Grafikproblemen und anderen Symptomen, die mit defekten Logic Boards zusammenhängen dürften. It's all up there in black and white, but we'll be happy to spell it out again here -- it seems that Apple has decided to extend the length of iTunes song previews from 30 seconds to 90 seconds. Sounds just fine to us, but not to the recipients of this letter, who are told the change is happening whether they like it or not and it's for their own good. "We believe that giving potential customers more time to listen to your music will lead to more purchases," the document reads, but without giving the music labels any way to say no. We don't actually know the origin of this particular document, so we're not saying this is a done deal by any means, but if the letter's legit this you're looking at the world's largest online music store telling the labels to put up and shut up -- or else peddle their tunes somewhere else.

Jobs says iTunes extras are 'coming' to Apple TV
Steve Jobs emails tend to lie along a spectrum: at one end, they're pretty much useless (and probably often fake), and at the other end, they're interesting little glances at features we might get in the future. I'm putting this one in the second category, but of course, as usual, it's up to you what you think of it. Jobs allegedly replied to a question about iTunes LPs and iTunes Extras arriving on the new Apple TV software anytime soon, and his one word reply, sent directly from his iPhone, is supposed to be: "Coming."
So presumably we'll see those features added back in soon. We already know there's a firmware update

Apple tells labels iTunes samples growing to 90 seconds
Apple's plans to extend iTunes samples appeared to be moving forward Tuesday night as music publisher Symphonic Distribution said it had been told song samples would grow from 30 seconds to 90 seconds. Any song longer than two minutes and 30 seconds will automatically get the longer preview time. The deal for now is known only to affect the US and would be mandatory, as keeping music on the store would automatically grant permission.

iTunes song previews will be extended to 90 seconds in US store
Music site Symphonic Distortion reports Apple has sent word that song previews in the US iTunes Store will soon be extended to 90 seconds, up from the 30-second previews the store has featured until now. The only caveat is that songs must be longer than 2 minutes, 30 seconds in order to get a 90-second preview; shorter songs will stay at a 30-second preview. Makes sense.

Full Samsung Continuum specs leak out in Verizon comparison charts?
How does the as-yet-unannounced Samsung Continuum stack up against Verizon's pack of Droids, not to mention its Galaxy S brethren? Google Docs to soon get cloud printing, device sync
A buried part of the Google Docs source code has signalled Google's intentions to improve the web app, especially for mobile devices. The segment teases future plans to add "third party applications, cloud printers, and sync devices." Google has already established its own programming standard to handle the task, Cloud Print, but hasn't implemented it in a significant fashion so far.

US iPhone 4 availability finally "Within 24 Hours"
For the first time since its launch, the availability of the iPhone 4 in Apple's US Online Store has dropped to "within 24 hours." This should be welcome news to investors and analysts as it shows that Apple has successfully ramped up production enough to have good stock on hand levels going into the holiday season. T-Mobile moves up to 75 live HSPA+ markets, says it's running the largest '4G' network in the US
T-Mobile is announcing this evening that it's now got 75 live HSPA+ markets online, with coverage for roughly 200 million Americans up and running by the end of 2010. That footprint will start off at a theoretical max downlink of 21Mbps, but the carrier will be looking to scale that to 42Mbps in 2011 with the capacity to upgrade to 84 and 168Mbps down the road -- all without ever worrying about LTE. Logitech Revue gets OTA update, a cure for the framerate jitters?
Revue owners, have you been frustrated by some of the framerate issues? We hear ya, as do Google and Logitech. The latter said in an official post earlier today that an over-the-air update would arrive to fix such an issue, and like that, our Google TV box prompted us to download a 163MB file denoted update 39953. We've heard from a number of tipsters, too, who claim to have received the patch. Will this fix all the stuttering? We're hearing mostly yeas in that regard, so don't be shy, give the set-top another go -- and let us know if you see anything else that's new or improved.

App Store algorithms down and back up, probably tweaked
Regular users may not have noticed this, but I'm sure developers have -- the App Store's charts have been in a freeze for the past few days, leaving apps in exactly the same positions as they were last Thursday.
That might not seem like too big a deal, but for many developers, the App Store charts are where they make or break a profit -- not only do the charts provide a good inkling of how popular an app is compared to others, but the top 10 on the charts provides a huge amount of exposure -- just getting in the top 10 often boosts app sales just by virtue of the extra eyeballs.

Creative gets official with Android-based Zen Touch 2 PMP
Hard to say if this is the direct (or indirect) replacement to the Creative X-Fi2 we toyed with 13 months ago, but the new Zen Touch 2 has snuck out behind the cover of two ZiiO touch tablets. This here PMP sports a 3.2-inch touchscreen, Android 2.1 underneath, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, an accelerometer, inbuilt speaker, two megapixel camera, microSD card slot, GPS, digital compass, FM radio tuner and a run-of-the-mill plastic enclosure. Some owners of the latest MacBook Air notebooks have begun reporting reliability problems with displays. Several threads on Apple's discussion forums include claims of various distortions, incorrect colors, horizontal lines, vertical lines, and blank screens. MP3tunes founder Michael Robertson in an interview on Tuesday suggested that a successful defense against an EMI lawsuit would be a help to the rumored iTunes media locker and a future Google music service. If a motion for a summary judgment (found below) dismissing EMI's remaining lawsuit arguments is successful, the case would legally enshrine the right of Apple, Google and MP3tunes itself to host a user's music collection online, Robertson said. Report: Apple may have paid over $1M in iAd trademark settlement
This is interesting -- a consultant for Apple on the recent "iAd" trademark settlement accidentally disclosed some information about how much the payout was, and apparently it wasn't cheap. Consor says that it helped Innovate Media (the firm which has used the iAd trademark since 2006) pick up "a 7-figure settlement from Apple Computer [sic] in a trademark infringement case." That's probably over a million dollars, which actually sounds low, considering how solid a grip Innovate Media actually had on the mark. But when Apple comes calling, so does the big Apple wallet.
What's interesting about this is that we've seen Apple "ignore" trademarks a few times before,

Excel Software today updated their QuickLicense tool to version 5.0, adding subscription licenses, a subscription grace period, delayed activation, quick validation for plug-ins and multi-threaded software, dual licenses and more.
