Apple, Google looking to buy Boku for mobile payments

Apple and Google are both investigating the prospect of buying or dealing with the mobile payment firm Boku to ease mobile payments, a leak from near the company has discovered. The startup's top executives, including its CEO Mark Britto and its co-creator Ron Hirson, have reportedly been talking alternately to Apple's iPhone team leaders as well as Google Mobile Services' engineering director Michael Morrissey. Talks have been underway with at least Apple for the past three weeks, TechCrunch said, but it's unclear how likely a takeover prospect might be.

HTC 7 Pro going on preorder for Microsoft employees November 8th

Sprint will apparently be offering preorders of its HTC 7 Pro -- the only CDMA Windows Phone 7 device to be announced so far -- in just a few days' time on November 8th, but there's a fairly big catch: you've got to be a Microsoft employee to get in on the action. Target confirmed rumors today and said it would start carrying the iPhone as of November 7. The deal will see both the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 reach the 846 stores that have a Target Mobile section. Prices weren't mentioned but should cover the same range as for other retailers.

Optoma puts out iPhone, iPod dock with own pico projector

Optoma's pico projector line took an unusual turn on Monday as the company launched the Neo-i. The iPhone and iPod speaker dock is the first to have its own pico projector. Google sues US government for only looking at Microsoft deal

Google today sued the US Department of the Interior for alleged favoritism in picking Microsoft over others for contracts (document below). The complaint accused the government of automatically ruling out Google Apps and other products by requiring that any solution for its messaging service use the Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite, excluding Google entirely. Limiting the choices to Microsoft was "unduly restrictive" and limited competition, the search firm said.

Report: OmniVision to supply iPad image sensors

Barron's reports today that manufacturer OmniVision has been tapped to supply image sensors for the next-generation iPad. iLife '11 has a lot of goodies, but none impressed me more than GarageBand's new capabilities (although I am pretty enthralled with some of the new iMovie features). In particular Apple is reportedly claiming an issue with the conductive flanges in some Monster units, which may be causing iPads, iPhones and iPods to erratically start and stop music. Microsoft springt auf HTML5-Zug auf

Bei der Entwicklung von Web-Anwendungen setzt Microsoft künftig auf den HTML5-Standard. Die hauseigene Silverlight-Technologie, welche Microsoft als Konkurrenz zu Adobe Flash entwickelt hatte, verliert dadurch weiter an Bedeutung. Für HTML5 spricht offenbar vor allem die Kompatibilität, wobei Microsoft explizit auch Apples iOS-Geräte nennt. Für Apple ist dies zweifellos eine gute Nachricht, setzt sich der iPhone-Hersteller doch schon seit längerem vehement für die Verbreitung von HTML5 ein. Sanho, HyperMac's parent company, has agreed to change its sub-brand's name in the wake of an Apple lawsuit which forced it to stop selling products with MagSafe adapters. Android at twice iPhone's US share via BlackBerry converts

Android now has roughly twice the market share of the iPhone in the US but owes this to a rash of Americans defecting from the BlackBerry, NPD researchers learned today. Google's platform shot from just three percent last summer to 44 percent this year, but almost all of the gain was at RIM's expense as the BlackBerry collapsed from 46 percent to 22 percent in the space of a year. Apple did decline over the period, but at a far gentler decline from 29 percent to 23 percent.

Review: Reckless Racing

Mit Reckless Racing veröffentlicht EA ein Rally-Rennspiel in klassischer Top-Down-Sicht. In fünf (iPhone) bzw. acht (iPad) Kursen darf hierbei gegen lokale Gegner oder Online-Gegner gefahren werden. Auch wenn der Kursumfang mit, freundlich gezählten, sechzehn Kursen (jeder kann vorwärts und rückwärts gefahren werden), eher mau ausfällt, kommt bei Reckless Racing viel Freude auf. Das liegt zum einen am guten Sound und der guten Grafik, aber auch an den sehr detailliert und interessant gestalteten Kursen mit Brücken, Flüssen, Teichen und Gebäuden. 3D-Elemente wie Steine oder Verkehrshütchen können umgefahren werden und bleiben im Weg liegen. Auch die im Matsch hinterlassenen Fahrspuren bleiben erhalten, so dass die Strecke nach einigen Runden angenehm wüst ausschaut. Die einzelnen Fahrzeuge fahren sich übrigens deutlich anders, so dass hier pro Strecke das passende Fahrzeug gefunden werden muss (oder der

Wann die Installation von Software, die nicht über Apples Handelsplattform geht, zumindest erschwert oder wegen vorgeblicher Sicherheitsbedenken mit abschreckenden Warnmeldungen belegt wird, ist wohl nur noch eine Frage der Zeit. Die vollständige Gängelung des Käufers rückt dann nahe.» Dies ist ein Ausschnitt aus einem an sich unspektakulären Artikel, welcher letzte Woche in der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung zu lesen war. Applidiumís VLC free open-source universal iOS video player app VLC appears likely to be pulled from Appleís iTunes store. iPhone DST bug causing alarms to fail across Europe

An iPhone bug already seen when Australia switched back to Standard Time a few weeks ago has now hit Europe. Twitter is alight with reports of recurring iPhone alarms going off an hour later than usual. So even though the iOS clock changed correctly over the weekend, the alarm is still locked to Daylight Savings Time. Thing is, according to a ZDNet Australia report from more than three weeks ago, Apple acknowledged the bug with a promise to fix it with a software update. Deltenna's WiBE rural broadband device: swans and geese now free to browse

At last, progress. We've heard whispers of "rural broadband expansion" thrown from halls of politicians for months on end, but it looks like a small company across the pond is cutting through the red tape and getting down to business. Deltenna's WiBE -- described as a device to deliver fast broadband to rural areas that are far from the phone exchange -- is available starting today in the UK and Ireland. It's purpose? It connects to nearby 3G networks and creates a mobile hotspot, not unlike a MiFi. The difference is that it delivers a data throughput around 30 times greater than a 3G

Adium updates to v1.4, adds Twitter and IRC support

Multi-network instant messager client Adium have updated their self-titled free software to v1.4, adding Twitter and IRC support along with significant improvements to group chat, contact management, MSN and Jabber connections and AIM/Mobile Me connections. The update includes "hundreds" of bug fixes and improvements, and the developers are celebrating the release with a new line of Adium t-shirts and other merchandise.
