Red to show working EPIC camera at NAB
Red founder Jim Jannard announced on the Red User forum that a working model of the long awaited and delayed EPIC camera will be displayed at the NAB show in mid April. The high-end camera, according to specs first released nearly two years ago, is expected to be capable of capturing images at near 5K resolution thanks to a full-frame sensor the same size as traditional 35mm film while still retaining the benefits of a digital sensor.

Apple slighting educational iPad market for consumer sales?
Apple may be intentionally pushing educational iPad orders to the side in favor of general consumers, a complaint received by MacNN suggests. The reader notes that on March 15th, he placed an order through the Apple online store's educational section, consisting of a 32GB iPad, a case and a VGA connector. While the latter two have been assigned a specific shipping date, the iPad has been given only a general "April" timeframe. In an initial phone call, an Apple representative claimed that only 16GB iPads were shipping at that point.

Yamaha enters in-ear headphones
Yamaha has dipped into in-ear headphones for the first time with the late Friday launch of its EPH line. The EPH-50 is considered the pseudo-audiophile model with 13.6mm (0.53in) drivers, tougher construction and a quarter-inch adapter for home stereos. The EPH-30 is the mainstream entry with 9mm (0.35in) drivers and a more conventional build, and the EPH-20 caters to entry-level listeners with slightly larger drivers (10.7mm or 0.42in) but low-cost sound and five color choices.

Of all days for this thing to arrive it had to be today. Yes folks, as you can see in our gallery below, the JooJoo is not only real, but we've got one. We're not going to go into details right now, as we've got our hands kind of full this week, but we suggest you hang tight until our review hits (probably early next week) so you can make the final decision if it's going to be this thing or, you know, some other tablet. First iPad apps arrive at App Store
The first iPad apps have become available at the App Store, despite not being useful to most of the public, observers note. Some of these include Bento, Brushes, Things, Reuters News Pro, Twitterific and Scrabble. Notably, search results now include a separate "iPad Apps" section, reflecting the different purposes and capabilities of iPad titles.

iPhone sales hit 400K in Korea, keep pace with Omnia II
South Korean sales of the iPhone are moving as quickly as Samsung's flagship Omnia II, separate statments. KT on Thursday said it had sold about 400,000 iPhones in the past four months, or about 100,000 per month since January. The rate was enough to come on par with Samsung's Omnia II, which Samsung earlier this week said had sold 600,000 units so far in six months of being in subscribers' hands.

PU_PA EV concept is cute, light, and deadly
Of all the wacky EV concepts we've seen lately, this is certainly one of them! PU_PA EV is a car developed by Teijin Ltd, a Japanese textile manufacturer that among other things recently teamed up with Mazda to produce Biofront bio-plastic. Meant to highlight the firm's materials and technologies, the vehicle weighs less than half a ton (437kg, to be exact) and will shuttle you around at speeds of roughly 40 MPH for up to 60 miles on a single charge. Motorola patent application offers new option for 3D cellphones
Flip phones may be somewhat on the outs these days (at least among those demanding the latest and greatest), but they may well be the key to future 3D cellphones -- at least if this Motorola patent application is any indication. The basic idea is actually a fairly simple one: you'd see a regular 2D image on the screen when the cover is open, but when it's closed you'd be able to look through the transparent lid and see the images with a "three dimensional appearance." As you can probably figure out, that screen would be a touchscreen that takes the place of a keypad, and another illustration also shows that the same idea could be applied to a slider phone. US court refuses Microsoft appeal on i4i patent suit
Microsoft in a US federal court today was denied an appeal against the $290 million verdict against it following i4i's patent lawsuit. The decision forces Microsoft to either pay the promised damages or else take its case to the Supreme Court. Representatives haven't said if the company plans to follow this route.

Proposed headset display would extend iPhone functions
Glasses proposed in a newly-revealed Apple patent application would allow better hands-free use of an iPhone, and potentially other Apple handhelds. The headset would merge with an iPhone, putting a screen directly in front of a person's eyes so that it doesn't have to be carried. The two components would share data wirelessly, and adjust images appropriately for such a short viewing distance.

Fujitsu debuts thin-and-light LifeBook MH330 netbook
We just got a chance to check out Fujitsu's MH380 netbook in February, but the company has now already followed it up with a new, thinner and lighter model: the LifeBook MH330. In addition to getting the weight down to 2.4 pounds (with a three-cell battery), the netbook sports a slightly more angular design than its counterpart, but remains mostly unchanged when it comes to specs, That includes the same 10-inch screen as before (albeit WSVGA instead of WXGA), along with an Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and the usual niceties like built-in Bluetooth and an integrated memory card reader. Analyst: Amazon should drop Kindle to $149 to survive
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster today called for Amazon to drop the Kindle's price to $149 to avoid a collision with the iPad. He told TTD that trying to compete directly with Apple would almost certainly fail and that the best choice would be to avoid it as much as possible. A major price gap, in this view, would calm nervous investors.

GPS pioneer Roger L. Easton inducted into National Inventors Hall of Fame
Well, it looks like it's the season for pioneering inventors to be honored, with Chuck Thacker's recent Turing Award win now followed up by Roger L. Easton's induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Apple taunts Adobe with "iPad ready" HTML5 sites
Apple fired a shot at Adobe on Thursday by posting a list of iPad ready sites. All of the pages support HTML5 for video when seen on the iPad and either show a special site without Adobe Flash or have already dropped Flash in favor of the plugin-free option. In addition to known sites like Vimeo and Virgin America, it also confirms that CNN, Flickr, the New York Times and several other major sites have made the switch.

Motorola adds H17txt headset with text-to-speech
Motorola on Thursday introduced its H17txt Bluetooth headset. While it works as a normal earpiece, it can read out text messages when combined with a MotoSpeak text-to-speech app from multiple stores, including the Android Market. The headset reads out text messages automatically every time it's turned on, and will also announce the name of the sender if the number is saved in the user's phone book.

Apple resellers to carry iPads after all
Contrary to most reports, at least some Apple resellers will have iPads in stock on launch, according to the Macintosh Resellers Association. Officially, the tablet is only being sold in the US through Apple and Best Buy. Some members of the MRA's Apple Specialist network, however, will be carrying the product on April 3rd, just without the benefit of high publicity, or large quantities in stock.

First Looks: Brenthaven Bill-Fold Sleeve for iPad
It's one of the more unusual iPad cases we've yet seen: Brenthaven's Bill-Fold Sleeve ($35) is pitched as a product with 100% recycled billboard material on the outside, a soft faux suede interior, and a white-on-black color scheme. Both sides of the sleeve are open by default, using Velcro to fold closed on each side as you prefer, creating what looks like a bulging pouch when completely sealed. Looking for another reason to wear a Bluetooth headset all the time? Then you might want to consider admitting you have a problem, or you might want to get Motorola's new H17txt model, which can be paired with the company's new MotoSpeak text-to-speech application to read text messages aloud as they come in. Apple Stores, Best Buys not the only places to get an iPad on Saturday
It turns out that "select" Apple Specialist locations -- independently-owned stores authorized by Apple to sell and service its products -- will be getting iPad stock to sell on Saturday. In our experience it's hit-or-miss; we've called a few locations around the country this morning and have been given answers ranging from "no" to "we'll have display units, not retail units" to a straight-up "yes," so we recommend that you call the Specialist near you if you're looking for a stealth way to avoid the bedlam that's likely going to be brewing at proper Apple Stores. ITC agrees to look into Apple's case against HTC
The International Trade Commission on Thursday said it would look into Apple's complaint against HTC. It agreed to see whether HTC's phones might violate iPhone patents relating to hardware and software. A decision against HTC could see some or all of its phones blocked from import into the US until it resolved the dispute with Apple.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 reaches iPhone, iPod touch
Activision has published an iPhone/iPod touch version of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, first released for the Sony PlayStation console in 2000. The port attempts to carry over most of the original game's elements, including a progression mechanism by which virtual cash is used to unlock new moves and skateboards. LG announces LD950 passive shutter 3DTV for UK market

Microsoft hiring for Denver, San Diego retail stores
Microsoft has finally opted to expand its retail stores beyond its two trial areas, a pair of job listings have confirmed. Apple hires security agency to track, guard iPad shipments
iPad shipments have moved beyond US Customs and UPS' main Louisville hub, but are still under tight security, a follow-up report notes. iPhone widens edge over BlackBerry in JD Power rankings
Apple's lead in smartphone customer satisfaction has only grown in the past few months, JD Power discovered in its latest Smartphone Customer Satisfaction study. Dell, HP may be turning backs on 10-inch netbooks
The top two US netbook builders are scaling back or even exiting 10-inch netbooks in the near future, tips from within the industry. Australian researchers unveil bionic eye prototype, implants coming in 2013
We've been hearing about things like bionic eyeballs -- specifically cameras which are implantable into human eyes -- for quite some time now. But it looks like Bionic Vision Australia has actually developed a real, working prototype. BVA, along with researchers at the University of New South Wales, have shown off their advanced prototype of the "eye," which boasts a pair of glasses mounted with a camera, a pocket-mounted CPU, and a wireless electrode chip which must be surgically implanted in the eye. Supply problems, demand may push sellout of launch iPads
Whether it wants to or not, Apple should sell out of all the iPads it has produced for launch weekend, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Apple is believed to have at least 200,000 to 300,000 iPads en route to stores and customers, likely more, and for some time new pre-order delivery dates have moved to April 12th or later. Tegra 2 faults may delay Android tablets
The ICD Ultra, Notion Ink Adam and other Android-based tablets have been pushed back due to flaws in the NVIDIA Tegra processor they use, a rumor claimed today. The dual-core Tegra 250 at the heart of these and a Compal 7-inch tablet allegedly has "serious issues" of reliability and has pushed back launches until August at the earliest. A SlashGear tipster claimed Compal wouldn't ship its reference design until mid-September, while ICD and Notion Ink wouldn't ship until the fall; ICD's Ultra and Vega wouldn't arrive until October.

University of Washington's Prefab tool promises to 'unlock the desktop'
The University of Washington may be overstating things a just a tad with a headline like "what if all software was open source," but the so-called "Prefab" software tool developed by some researchers at the university does indeed manage to pull of some fairly impressive tricks. The short of it is that the tool promises to you let you (or developers) modify any application without actually modifying it. To do that, the software constantly looks for easily identifiable elements of an application (dialog boxes, scroll bars, buttons, etc.) and then "alters their behavior" by effectively taking over your display, leaving the actual program running in the background and displaying the augmented version instead. IMHO: Android und Windows Mobile haben den gleichen Fehler
Als Google Android vorstellte, war nicht abzusehen, dass die Gerätebesitzer das gleiche Schicksal ereilen würde wie Käufer von Windows-Mobile-Smartphones. Doch genau das ist eingetreten. YouTube erscheint ab sofort in neuem Design
Nach einer Testphase hat YouTube ein neues Design seiner Website eingeführt. Ähnlich wie bei dem im Dezember vorgestellten Projekt Feather, einer Light-Version der Videosite, verfolgt die Google-Tochter mit der Neugestaltung das Ziel, die Videoclips wieder mehr in den Mittelpunkt zu rücken. Im Gegensatz zu Feather wurden allerdings keine Funktionen entfernt, sondern lediglich neu positioniert oder ausgeblendet.

Motorola Backflip: Ab April bei Amazon für 440 Euro

Angekündigt: Das iPad naht – Eine Spieleübersicht
Das iPad naht mit großen Schritten und die letzten Wochen haben die Hersteller fieberhaft damit verbracht, ihre Spiele und sonstigen Apps für das iPad vorzubereiten. Große Entwickler konnte dabei Vorabversionen des Geräts erhalten, wogegen kleine Entwickler “blind” im Simulator entwickeln mussten und sich teils Papp-iPads nachgebaut haben, um die beste Position für die Steuerung abwägen zu können.
Erscheint das iPad in Deutschland erst Ende April in Versionen für WLAN und WLAN+UMTS, so werden die USA schon am 03. April in den Genuss der WLAN-Version kommen, mitsamt 1.000 Apps. Look, we're not sure what appadvice is using to back its claims, but it's been pumping out supposed iPad app leaks for a few weeks now with screenshots and videos that tell a convincing story. Now they've linked us to a host of new iPad apps with Netflix and ABC player being two of the most notable. The free Neflix app is said to be launching along side Apple's slate on April 3rd letting Netflix subscribers browse and manage their queues. WebOS 1.4.1 bringt Bezahlfunktion für deutschen App Catalog
WebOS 1.4.1 für das Palm Pre wurde veröffentlicht. Damit erhält Palms App Catalog auch die eigentlich für März 2010 versprochene Bezahlfunktion, so dass Kunden WebOS-Software darüber kaufen können. iPad-Gerüchte: Europastart, Preise & Bestellungen
Geht es nach den Informationen des kanadischen Blog "iPad in Canada, könnte der Europastart des iPads zum 24. April geplant sein. Eine Konzern-weite Urlaubssperre scheint auf das noch gut drei Wochen entfernte Datum hinzuweisen und könnte demnach auch den Deutschland-Start des Tablets voraussagen. Hierzulande scheint das Interesse am iPad übrigens besonders groß zu sein. Laut Gizmodo sollen bereits 250,000 Modelle vorbestellt worden sein - wer sich diese Zahl aus der Luft gegriffen hat, bleibt uns Jesus Diaz in seinem Artikel jedoch schuldig. Offiziell bietet Apple hierzulande noch keine Vorbestellungen an - der Ausrutscher des T-Online Shops währte nur gut zwei Tage.

iPad-Rezensionen: Die ersten Videos landen
Wie üblich vor dem Markt-Start neuer Produkte, hat Apple auch das iPad an ausgewählte, ausschließlich amerikanische Tech-Journallisten verteilt und scheint die Freigabe der Besprechungen auf den ersten April gelegt zu haben. So liegt die Anzahl der aktuell verfügbaren Test-Artikel bereits jetzt im zweistelligen Bereich - im Laufe des Tages dürften weitere Artikel folgen. Soweit überschaubar, kann sich das iPad bislang über ausschließlich positive Rezensionen freuen - auch wenn diese immer mit dem Verweis auf die angesprochene Zielgruppe (eher Consumer als Heavy-User) des Tablets gespickt sind:

PS3 firmware 3.21 is out: say goodbye to 'install other OS'
Just a tad ahead of schedules -- perhaps as a macabre assurance this isn't some April 1st joke -- firmware 3.21 for the PS3 is now being seeded to anyone who tries to log onto the PlayStation Network. As far as we can tell, all the update seems to do is remove the "install other OS" option and kill access to anyone who does have another platform dual-booted. Just a friendly reminder, if you fall into that category, be sure to either backup your partition or wait for Geohot to find a workaround.

AT&T getting 'practice' Pre Pluses tomorrow?
It looks like AT&T will start taking delivery tomorrow of Pre Plus units that are being specifically designated as high-security, SKU-less "practice devices" that are only to be used off the sales floor for training purposes, though when training is complete, they can be moved to a live store display. That certainly lends weight to a launch happening sooner rather than later, counter to rumors earlier in the month that we might not see them on shelves until the peak of Summer. Of course, we don't know how long the training sessions are going to run -- our leak here gives no indication of that, nor of a retail release date -- but considering that we first saw this form factor back in January of '09,

First iPad reviews come in: a "winner"
Apple's frequently preferred journalists provided their first early reviews of the iPad tonight and provided an almost uniformly positive outlook on the tablet, including some minor revelations about the device. Ed Baig of USA Today in his review called the iPad a "winner" and said that Apple had "pretty much nailed it" on the first try at the device. He also confirmed that most bestselling books will cost $13 at the iBookstore, although some will cost $10.

NYT: Hulu planning iPad app, might be subscription based
We've been hearing whispers about a Hulu app for the iPad since the day Apple's tablet was announced, and things are starting to pick up steam: the New York Times says four different people familiar with Hulu's plans have said the app is coming, and that it will potentially require a subscription fee. That either makes a lot of sense (if you're a TV network exec looking to keep the Aston padding on your paycheck) or absolutely none at all (if you're everyone else), but it certainly seems like it's happening -- especially since Hulu CEO Jason Kilar told the Times that he's "open to subscriptions as a complement to the ad-supported model." Germans show strong demand for iPad; Apple refunds shipping
As the US iPad launch quickly approaches, additional details of international demand and domestic shipping terms have surfaced. Apple has notified early buyers that the devices will be delivered on April 3rd, but only in areas where UPS offers Saturday delivery. The company is also automatically refunding the additional payments for any customers that originally paid for expedited shipping.

RIM's earnings just shy of expectations, expects boost next quarter
The latest quarter of earnings reported by RIM today was a bevy of pretty good news sprinkled in around one moderately negative piece -- quarterly revenue -- which missed the consensus estimate of $4.31 billion by about $230 million. Otherwise, though, the company set a new record for quarterly BlackBerry activations, raking in 4.9 million new accounts to bring the total to 41 million, and annual revenue grew 35 percent to $15 billion versus the year prior. Notably, co-CEO Jim Balsillie chimed in to say that the company is "off to a great start in fiscal 2011 and expect strong shipments, revenue, subscriber and earnings growth in Q1" to the tune of somewhere between $1.31 and $1.38 a share, which beats analyst estimates, so these gu

Amazon cuts Apple-like deals with Harper, Simon & Schuster
Amazon today bowed to pressure ahead of the iPad launch by striking new Kindle book deals with HarperCollins and Simon & Schuster. Similar to the terms for Macmillan, the change will let both publishers use an agency model that gives them control over prices. Some bestseller e-books will now cost between $13 to $15; others will still cost the usual $10, but others should be priced below Amazon's average.

Reports of webOS 1.4.1 update now coming in
It doesn't appear to do anything groundbreaking like overclock your Pre, but it looks like the webOS 1.4.1 update is now starting to trickle out to at least a few lucky users. According to PreCentral, one of the first reports to come in was from a Pre user who also happened to be one of the first to get the webOS 1.4 update while he was in Vietnam, and has now managed to snag the 1.4.1 update while residing in Holland. BlackBerry Curve 8500 demand triggers rare shortages
Sales of the BlackBerry Curve 8500 line have been so strong that they're creating shortages, RIM said during a call discussing its latest fiscal results. A disproportionately large number of the 10.5 million BlackBerries shipped were the entry level phone and have left the company struggling to keep up. The shortages are sustained enough that RIM expects a limit to the number of phones it can ship in the spring and warned that its inventory would be "extremely low."
