IE9 demoed on Ion-based Eee PC with full GPU acceleration
Although we were a little more focused on Windows Phone 7 Series when we went to MIX 10, Microsoft's other big announcement at the conference was Internet Explorer 9, which offers HTML5 support and support for GPU acceleration throughout the browsing experience. We saw a few demos of the system in action at MIX, but this video from NVIDIA does a little better job showing how helpful that extra GPU boost can be -- IE9 running on the Ion 2-base

Apple updates AirPort Utility, Time Capsule firmware
Apple on Wednesday released updates to its AirPort utilities for Mac and Windows systems, along with a firmware update for Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme Base Station devices. AirPort Utility 5.5.1 has been improved with a number of bug fixes, helping to prevent problems when importing settings or propagating MAC address control lists using an extended network.

RIM ships 10.5 million BlackBerries, sees iPhone close gap
BlackBerry creator RIM today claimed another record quarter of smartphone sales in the winter. It shipped a total 10.5 million BlackBerries, slightly more than its already record 10.2 million in the summer and a new all-time high. Of those, 4.9 million were new to the BlackBerry and marked another best-ever result.

Droid mercifully gets a manual 2.1 update option
As is pleasantly often the case with Android devices, it turns out there's already a quick, easy, nearly painless way to circumvent the phased rollout of Android 2.1 to Verizon's Droids out in the field. Anyone who's already been through this will feel right at home with the process: grab the binary straight from Google (so you know it's legit, which is always nice), rename the file, transfer it to your microSD card, and reboot to the recovery mode screen. Kleiner Perkins is "doubling down" on investment for iPhone

Leak has cloud-based iTunes delayed until summer
Apple's rumored streaming iTunes locker won't be ready until the summer at the earliest, music business contacts claimed on Wednesday. A service for storing a user's music online had once been pegged for the spring but now reportedly has been pushed back until at least a season later. Apple said it expects the iPad to be a "second gold rush" of app development as consumers rush to add content to their new devices, and it looks like Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers agrees: the venture capital firm just announced that it's expanding the iFund to $200 million to invest in iPad app development. More plan to buy Android phones than iPhones this spring
Android may have overtaken the iPhone as the most sought-after smartphone platform in the US, ChangeWave found in its latest study. Of those planning to get a smartphone in the next 90 days, the most -- 30 percent -- expect it to be an Android device. Simmtronics, IBM and Canonical bring $190 Simmbook to emerging markets
Simmtronics' Simmbook netbook has been floating around for a few months now, but it's just gotten a considerable boost thanks to a partnership with IBM and Canonical, who have teamed up with the company in an effort to bring the netbook to emerging markets. That confluence of companies means the netbook will run on Ubuntu Netbook Remix and come pre-loaded with IBM's Client for Smart Work, which includes Lotus Symphony and access to various cloud-based services. The multitasking support believed to be in iPhone 4.0 will be based on Mac OS X's Expose feature, a new report hints. Proposed interfaces for the option have so far been a mystery, in part because the firmware remains deep in development. An unknown Chinese company has made a knock-off MacBook Pro notebook that is powered by an Intel Atom processor. Other specs of the lookalike include a 14.1-inch screen with a 1366x768 resolution, a touchpad with integrated buttons and the second-generation of NVIDIA's Ion graphics chipset working in conjunction with a 1.6GHz Atom. Ford bringing Microsoft Hohm energy management to Focus Electric next year
It won't be among the first devices to use Microsoft's cleverly-named Hohm energy management system, but Ford has just announced that it will be incorporating the technology into its upcoming Focus Electric car. That makes it the first automaker to hop on board, and Ford even goes so far as to call the move a "needed step in the development of the infrastructure that will make electric vehicles viable." Microsoft confirms 64GB Zune HD at $350
Microsoft at mid-day confirmed the existence of a 64GB version of the Zune HD. The new player can hold about 16,000 songs (6,400 at the Zune Marketplace's 320Kbps) and is treated as an HD video specialist with about 20 hours of 720p. doubleTwist for Mac adds iTunes-like Android Market
Sync app specialist doubleTwist today added an Android equivalent to the App Store in the Mac version of its software. Apple sends out customized iPad pickup reminders
Apple is now sending reminders to people who opted for in-store pickup of pre-ordered iPads. The e-mails, which began going out Wednesday morning, mention that iPads will be "ready and waiting" for customers between 9AM and 3PM local time on April 3rd. After the 3PM deadline, Apple warns, iPads will no longer be held, and instead become available on "first-come, first served basis while supplies last."

Android catches up to iPhone in dev interest as iPad cools
A new Appcelerator study (PDF) shows that Android has almost completely caught up with the iPhone in developer interest. Those "very interested" in Google's mobile OS shot from 68 percent in January to 81 percent this month and are just a short distance away from the iPhone's 87 percent, which hardly moved in the last three months. The sudden equality likely came from many developers settling on Android as the "second platform" they write for, although researchers noted that the iPhone still had a safe lead.

Much akin to the iTunes Store for apps, doubleTwist lets you browse Android apps in a beautified, desktop interface, but the "twist" is that you can't actually download and sync apps with your phone. Any possible Verizon iPhone would be much more likely to damage Android sales at the carrier than BlackBerry, Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu told investors today. He suspects that Apple might target Verizon just to undermine Google and that the search firm, HTC and Motorola would suffer the most with an iPhone on the same network. AT&T, Apple working on lessening iPhone's network strain
AT&T is working directly with Apple to reduce the iPhone's impact on cellular networks, says the Wall Street Journal. Cisco revamps routers with easy-setup Valet, more
Cisco completely overhauled its router lineup on Wednesday with seven new models, including its first purely Cisco-branded routers for the home. The 100Mbps Ethernet and 802.11n-equipped Valet and the gigabit-toting Valet Plus both avoid the network setup process entirely through their namesake valet key: a small USB adapter plugs into a Mac or PC and cuts the setup process down to three steps. OpenGL 3.0 nur teilweise in Mac OS X 10.6.3 implementiert
Mit Mac OS X 10.6.3 hat Apple auch zahlreiche Komponenten des Grafiksystems aktualisiert. So wurde unter anderem die 3D-Schnittstelle OpenGL in Version 3.0 integriert. Allerdings zeigt sich hier mit Hilfe des OpenGL Extensions Viewer, dass Apple einige Bestandteile von OpenGL 3.0 mit der finalen Version von Mac OS X 10.6.3 wieder herausgenommen hat. Glove Mouse project gives 'pinch to zoom' a new meaning (video)
We never cease to be amazed by the number of projects spawned from that one scene in Minority Report where Tom Cruise goes massively multitouch, but we'll also never tire of seeing those projects in action. The latest is the Glove Mouse from Tony Hyun Kim and Nevada Sanchez at MIT and, while they've been on the project for some time (winning the school's George C. Newton Project Prize in 2009 for their work), they've recently made the gloves wireless and posted some photos and videos. Nuovations' Iris + Reflex brings ambient light sensing to Macs of all stripes
It may not be of much use to anyone with a recent iMac or MacBook, but folks with a Mac that doesn't have a built-in ambient light sensor will soon be able to get their fix courtesy of Nuovation's new Iris + Reflex combo. That includes the Iris USB light sensor, which is small enough to not obstruct any nearby ports, and works in conjunction with the company's Reflex software to dial down your display's brightness to suit your surroundings. In fact, it even bests Apple's standard offering when it comes to advanced settings, although we're still trying to figure out why you'd want to have two of the sensors connected. Seit der iTunes-Store-Schweiz-Petition sind 5.5 Jahre verstrichen, aber die heutige Situation ist vergleichbar mit jener damals: Wir Schweiz warten auf ein iTunes-Angebot, welches dem nahen Ausland und/oder durch andere CH-Anbieter bereits seit längerer Zeit bereits zur Verfügung steht — nicht aber im iTunes Store Schweiz. Konkret ist die Sprache von den Filmen und TV-Serien, welche es in den USA bereits seit 3.5 Jahren (Filme) bzw. gar 4.5 Jahren (TV-Serien) gibt.
In einer neuen Petition gehen wir auf diesem Umstand ein. Unzählige Mails und Bitten haben uns in den letzten Monaten und Jahren erreicht, in denen macprime.ch-Leser uns genau um diesen im Schweizer iTunes Store herrschen

Google integriert Flash in Chrome OS und Browser

Intel hat seine ersten Prozessoren vorgestellt, die acht Kerne auf einem Die vereinen. Die CPUs der Produktreihe Xeon 7500 bieten nach Herstellerangaben mit einer durchschnittlichen Leistungssteigerung um Faktor drei den größten Performanceschub in der Geschichte der Xeon-Prozessoren. Picasa spricht jetzt 35 Sprachen
Google hat eine neue Version 3.6.5 seiner Bildverwaltungssoftware Picasa veröffentlicht. Die Software bietet eine direkte Anbindung an das gleichnamige Online-Foto-Portal. Die neue Version liegt in 35 verschiedenen Sprachen vor.
Mit dem Update spricht Picasa neben Englisch auch Deutsch, Französisch sowie weitere europäische und auch asiatische Sprachen. Im Vergleich zur Windows-Version fehlen nur Hindi, Thai und Vietnamnesisch.

Gerichtsurteil: SCO besitzt keine Rechte an Unix
Die scheinbar unendliche Geschichte von SCO gegen Linux um aus Unix gestohlenen Source-Code nähert sich nun wohl doch allmählich dem Ende. Wie The Salt Lake Tribune berichtet hat eine Jury in Salt Lake City, Utah, nun entschieden, dass SCO keine Rechte an Unix hält. Bekanntlich ist das iPad ab kommenden Samstag in den USA verfügbar, bis zur Einführung in weiteren wichtigen Märkten wird es laut Apple Ende April. Navigon-Update: MyRoutes, 3D-Panoramaansicht und Anbindung an soziale Netzwerke
Navigon hat eine neue Version 1.5 seiner iPhone-Navigationssoftware MobileNavigator veröffentlicht. Das Update integriert das von Navigationsgeräten bekannte MyRoutes-Feature, eine Anbindung an Facebook und Twitter und als In-App Purchase eine 3D-Panoramaansicht. Bis zum 12. April verkauft Navigon die Software außerdem vergünstigt.

Clues point to international iPad launching April 24th
A new leak Apple may have already fenced off April 24th for its Canadian, and possibly international, launches for the iPad. Some Apple store workers in Canada have reportedly been told that the 24th and 25th are "blackout periods," or days when they can't voluntarily book the day off. Since Apple in the past has used these blackouts to prepare for the iPhone 3G and other major launches, it's believed that the company has already reserved the 24th as launch day and wants to guarantee staffing levels.

SCO loses again over Unix patents
The SCO Group faces yet another loss in its legal battle involving a number of Unix patents, according to a blog post on Novell's website. A District Corut of Utah jury on Tuesday issued a verdict confirming Novell's ownership of the Unix copyrights. Seit dem Update auf Version 9.1 sucht iTunes auch nach Fernbedienungen in Form eines iPad. Nicht überraschend, lässt sich die Apple-App Remote doch garantiert auch auf einem iPad betreiben. ASUS preps two tablets with Google OS, Windows
ASUS' tablet plans will include "at least two" tablets this year, company CEO Jonney Shih told an interviewer today. He made clear that one would run a Google platform of some sort, either Android or Chrome OS, but that the other would run a variant of Windows. iTunes 9.1: Die neue E-Book-Verwaltung
Aus Hörbüchern werden Bücher: Apple hat aus dem Eintrag "Hörbücher" nun einfach nur "Bücher" gemacht. Hinter diesem Punkt in der Quellenliste verstecken sich fortan neben den altbekannten Hörbüchern auch E-Books im EPUB-Format, die sich auf dem iPad und - davon gehen wir aus - mit der in Kürze erhältlichne App iBooks auch auf dem iPod touch und dem iPhone lesen lassen.
Bislang lassen sich nur Hörbücher ohne Kopierschutz über iTunes verwalten, auf kurz oder lang wird Apple den kommerziellen iBookstore auch nach Europa bringen. Dort lassen sich dann E-Books direkt erwerben und wie wir es jetzt bereits von Musik, Videos und Apps kennen in die iTunes-Mediathek laden.

JooJoo tablet gets just 90 pre-orders
PayPal documents discovered today as part of the ongoing TechCrunch lawsuit against Fusion Garage have revealed that just 90 pre-orders were submitted before the JooJoo tablet began shipping last week. A motion in court for a preliminary injunction shows that, as of about February 22nd, the company took just 90 pre-orders for the $499 device, amounting to just $44,555 of revenue.
