Nikon testing D700 sequel in the wild?
Nikon might be testing its replacement for the D700 if a series of sightings are accurate. The camera on show, seen both in London and in Olympics host Vancouver, is a virtually perfect match for the full-frame DSLR's body but has the "Nikon" label taped over and the model number omitted. When realizing he was on camera, the Vancouver photographer reported by Nikon Rumors also took cover within the crowd to avoid further shots.

An alleged prototype of a 17-inch MacBook, hailing from the previous generation without an aluminum housing, has surfaced on eBay. The device allegedly integrates a 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, indicating that it may have been a prototype for the MacBook Pros released early in 2008.

Connect One intros mobile hotspot
Connect One has introduced a mobile hotspot at the Mobile World Congress show currently ongoing in Barcelona, the Wi-Reach Classic. The MiFi competitor can split the signal from a USB 3G modem to up to 10 users, and can support either WiMAX and LTE 4G networks after a firmware update. The battery-powered cradle holds the USB modem, while another USB port charges the built-in battery.

Briefly: Ave!Comics iPad app, Street Fighter IV for iPhone
Ave!Comics has announced that it is working on a iPad application, one which should become available with the tablet's launch. Users will be able to download digital comics, specially optimized for mobile viewing. Ave! is also integrating a store, set to begin with more than 300 titles, gaining new items on a weekly basis. Titles will be available in several languages, and some social networking and sharing functions should be present.

New York Times internal war over iPad edition prices
Even at $9.99/month the iPad edition of the New York Times isn't necessarily going to clean up -mostly because the free website will have almost all of the same content and will still look great on the iPad. But imagine trying to sell people on the idea of a $30/month version of the Times - the same cost as the paper edition.
According to Gawker, that is a very real possibility. If the paper group at the Times gets their way, you'll have to pay around $1/day to access the Times on the iPad. It isn't an insane price but it is a lot when compared to online editions of the Wall St. Journal for instance. Publishers skittish on iPad over lack of subscriber info
Apple's reluctance to hand over subscriber data is a major obstacle to getting magazine publishers on to the iBookstore and the iPad, according to claims by media executives talking to Apple. January Mac sales leap 36 percent year-over-year
Apple is already having a good start to 2010, notes Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. New NPD figures show that Mac retail sales rose 36 percent year-over-year for the month of January, well above a Street consensus of 18 percent for the March quarter as a whole. iPods were meanwhile up 5 percent for the month, in stark contrast to Munster's call for a drop of 17 percent.

Notion Ink lässt sein Tablet Adam scheibchenweise von der Leine: Nach dem Prototyp auf der CES gibt es jetzt einen Dummy auf dem WMC zu befingern. Als Trostpflaster für das funktionslose Vorführgerät hat Notion Ink dann wenigstens ein Video mitgebracht, das Adam in Aktion zeigt. Außerdem ließ man verlauten, dass Adam im Herbst in zwei Versionen kommen soll: 12,9 Millimeter fett mit Pixel Qis ePaper-Display 3Qi und 11,6 Millimeter schlank mit einer konventionelleren Display-Variante. Das braucht wohl noch etwas Geduld.

Lenovo's IdeaPad S10-3t gets unboxed on video, multitouch screen and all
Lenovo's aiming at a narrow niche with its IdeaPad S10-3t, but for those interested in things like "multitouch tablets of the netbook size," the video after the break would probably tickle your senses. Shortly after going on sale here in the States, the good folks over at Netbook News were able to procure one and unbox the whole thing on film. Apple offers free repair for older MacBooks
Apple is now offering a free fix for a problem affecting some of the first MacBooks. In systems sold between May 2006 and December 2007, Apple says, a "very small percentage" of hard drives can fail. Affected machines include 1.83, 2 and 2.16GHz MacBooks, all sized at 13 inches, with hard drive capacities ranging between 60 and 160GB. Hard drive failure can be discerned by a flashing question mark appearing on boot.

MSI's refreshed C-Series laptops appear to be quite boxy, but that may just be the sacrifice you make to own a seriously affordable Core i3 and i5 machine. The 15.6-inch CR620 models -- which include the CR620-030, CR620-033 and CR620-031 -- range from $650 to $750, and pack new Core i3 or Core i5 processors, Windows 7 Home Premium and six-cell batteries. Those wanting to spend even less have the $529 16-inch CR600, but despite its NVIDIA GeForce 8200M graphics it only has a Pentium Dual Core CPU. Study: 55% don't see netbooks as true laptops
Over half of users don't consider a netbook a true portable, according to a new PriceGrabber study (PDF). About 55 percent believe that only a full-size notebook can work as a primary system, and a roughly similar 63 percent see a netbook only as a extra device for carrying on the road. Only 14 percent would actually consider one of the under-11-inch systems as a main computer.

Apple today notified developers that its iPhone (iPad/iPod) Developer guide (PDF) had been updated to 5.3. Apple offers extended hard drive repair for early MacBooks with Seagate drives
Apple has finally addressed an Seagate hard drive issue dating back to 2006-2007 Black or White MacBooks which would fail with a question mark icon on startup. Apple will repair these drives until August 15th of 2010 or three years beyond purchase - whichever is longer.
Problems with the Seagate drives were first reported in 2007. We're not sure what took so long for the acknowledgment.
Apple/Seagate also offered to reimburse users who may have taken the drives to be repaired themselves previously. This would include both parts and labor.

Digicam hack simultaneously captures stills and high speed video on the cheap
When researchers at the University of Oxford needed to precisely sync high-speed video with high resolution stills, they had a hell of a time finding an off-the-shelf solution that worked with any degree of accuracy. Instead, the crazy kids hacked together a home cinema projector and a consumer-level digicam to split every frame of video captured by the camera into sixteen frames (albeit with lower resolution). Initial Aperture 3 release triggers severe memory leaks
Serious memory leaks are being caused by the newly-released Aperture 3, complaints on Apple's support forums suggest. Affected users note that virtual memory can spiral out of control, to the point that it can consume all of the free space on a Mac's hard drive. We got a few minutes today to check out the latest build on Notion Ink's Adam prototype that we first saw back at CES. Like we heard a week or so ago, there will indeed be two versions of the Adam -- one which will be 12.9 mm thick and boast the Pixel Qi 3Qi e-paper screen, and another, thinner, non-Pixel Qi screen. Schmidt: Google isn't making cellular a "dumb pipe"
Google chief Eric Schmidt at his Mobile World Congress speech today refuted claims that his company is reducing cellular networks to a "dumb pipe." After being accused of hurting carriers by promoting net neutrality and fostering platforms like Android, the executive said he fundamentally disagreed with the premise and that, by necessity, Google needed a degree of control on the network. Verizon allows unlimited Skype calls over its network on select phones
Verizon's Android and on Blackberry customers who use Skype got some huge news today. Verizon and Skype announced that they are going to let Skype work over 3G in an always-on type of mode, thus allowing their phones to act as Skype devices at all times.
The service will allow incoming and outgoing Skype calls including Skype phone number access.

Sprint: Android 2.1 update for Hero, Moment coming in early Q2
And there you have it, folks -- word straight from Sprint that the much-anticipated Android 2.1 update will be coming to the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment "early" in the second quarter of this year. As you may recall, Sprint has actually been talking about this update since December, but "early 2Q10" is at least slightly better news than the previous "1H2010" estimate the carrier's been dishing out.

Japanese probe targets false iTunes billing
Apple officials are being summoned by the Japanese government this week in order to answer questions about billing at the iTunes Store, Agence France-Presse reports. People are being charged for downloads they never made, states an official from Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency, who also notes that incidents have been on the rise since fall 2009. There are at least 95 known cases in Japan so far, spanning five credit card companies.

Verizon smartphones to carry Skype
Verizon at a joint event with Skype today unveiled a deal for Skype mobile on the US carrier's phones. The deal will give phones like the Droid, Droid Eris, Devour and most BlackBerries a specialized version of Skype that will let them make VoIP calls over Verizon's 3G. The full feature set should stay in place and will include both free voice chat between Skype users as well as IM and paid SkypeOut minutes.

RIM demos new WebKit-based BlackBerry browser at MWC -- it's fast!
We weren't expecting much out of RIM's presser here at MWC this morning, but the company managed to bust out one surprise -- a demo of the company's new WebKit-based BlackBerry browser. We're assuming this is what came out of that Torch Mobile acquisition, and the early build shown off on-screen looks pretty solid, rendering Amazon.com quickly and scoring a full 100/100 on the Acid3 test. Unfortunately, there's no word on when BlackBerry users will actually be able to get their hands on this, but rest assured we're digging for more info. Video after the break.

FCC calls for 100Mbps across most of US
FCC chairman Julius Genachowski at a conference today launched (PDF) an effort to boost the speed of Internet access in the US to 100Mbps and higher. Dubbed 100 Squared, it would provide at least 100Mbps access to 100 million homes in the US. The official didn't give a timetable for the rollout but hoped it would boost adoption of broadband from 65 percent today to 90 percent.

OpenPeak on Tuesday gave companies a white box alternative to the iPad. Adobe CS5 to include 64-bit Photoshop, Flash focus
Some major changes are planned for the Mac version of Adobe's Creative Suite 5, say sources claimed to be familiar with the pre-release software. Of these the most important may be in Photoshop CS5, which will finally make the switch to 64-bit code. The technology had been planned to go into CS4, and indeed Windows users have been operating in 64-bit mode for some time. The earlier Mac code was rooted in 32-bit Carbon architecture however, requiring an overhaul for the more modern Cocoa standard.

Nuance acquires MacSpeech
Big news today in the Speech Recognition business. MacSpeech is being acquired by Nuance. From a technology standpoint, MacSpeech moved to using Nuance's Dragon speech recognition engine last year (which was a huge improvement) so the move is likely a continuation of that.
Nuance has been consolidating speech recognition technology companies, having previously acquired ViaVoice from IBM and Dragon from its original independent developers.
MacSpeech will be folded into Nuances Dragon Naturally Speaking lineup.

As you know, the Merseyside (UK) police department finally nabbed a suspect with its £40,000 (roughly $63,000) drone recently -- an announcement that was accompanied by backslapping and hearty cheers all around. (Finally) A MacBook Repair Extension Program for Seagate (firmware 7.01) Defective HD
As we reported it several time in the past, some MacBook models equiped with Seagate HD have been facing a high frequency of crash, quickly associated with the Seagate firmware 7.01. Fora long time, Seagate denied the issue, as well as Apple. But things have changed, and Apple decided to implement and launch a MacBook Repair Extension Program dedicated to this problem.
Apple has determined that a very small percentage of hard drives that were used in MacBook systems, sold between approximately May 2006 and December 2007, may fail under certain conditions.

RIM demos BlackBerry browser based on WebKit
RIM drew attention at Mobile World Congress this morning by confirming and showing off a new web browser for the BlackBerry based on WebKit (video below). By using largely the same engine as Apple's Safari or Google's Chrome, the browser now loads pages much faster and is much more accurate. It can handle complex AJAX, CSS and HTML5, and is one of the few mobile browsers to get a perfect score on the ACID3 web standards test.

They might not have been revealed at MWC, but that doesn't mean the news flow on Microsoft's long-rumored Pink phones needs to stop. Following the FCC entries that hinted at the future character of these devices, we now have word of an industrious hacker getting hold of the firmware for both the Turtle and Pure handsets. XPAL's Solar Egg charges to 90% in four hours of mild sunlight
Unlike many solar devices that require an abundance of intense sunlight to be useful, XPAL's new Solar Egg does its thing even in "medium levels of natural light." The magic SunBoost solar conversion technology is supplied by a company called Intivation from The Netherlands, a country that's not exactly know for its tropical weather. XPAL claims that the internal 500mAh battery can be charged at over 90% capacity in just four hours of average sunlight exposure and can detect a "wide range of devices" like MP3 players and digital cameras to provide the appropriate level of power for charging. EU-Kommission genehmigt Übernahme von 3Com durch HP

Die iPhone-Hacker Sherif Hashim und "iH8Sn0w" haben via Twitter mitgeteilt, dass Apple ihren Zugang zum iTunes App Store gesperrt hat. Beim Versuch sich anzumelden, wurde beiden mitgeteilt, dass ihre Apple ID aus Sicherheitsgründen gesperrt worden sei. T-Mobile today outlined its plans for two high-end 3G devices due to reach its network next month. The webConnect Rocket will be the US carrier's first 3G modem to take advantage of its new HSPA+ network. Studie: optimale Werbewirksamkeit braucht Online u. SEO
Der Werbemarkt ist in Bewegung. Entsprechend der veränderten Mediennutzung, verschieben sich die Budgets von klassischen Kanälen wie TV, Radio oder Druck hin zu Online-Medien. Unternehmen könnten ihre Markenbekanntheit deutlich steigern, wenn sie TV-Werbung und Suchmaschinenmarketing kombinierten. Diesen Schluss zieht der Bundesverband Digitale Wirtschaft (BVDW) e.V. in seiner "BVDW TV/Search-Werbewirkungsstudie". Demnach liege die Steigerungsrate um 41 Prozent höher, als nur mit normaler Fernsehwerbung. Unternehmen würden ohne die parallele Schaltung von Kampagnen im Bereich der Suchwortvermarktung und Suchmaschinenoptimierung die Möglichkeit verschenken, sich gegenüber den Kunden stärker relevant zu präsentieren, so das Fazit der Studien-Herausgeber, das damit ganz im Sinne ihrer Geschäftstätigkeit liegt.

HTC HD mini hands-on
HTC's launch today also gives us the HD mini, and, as a result, we're starting to have a problem sticking with a favorite with each post we put up -- really, they're all that nice. Unfortunately for us we didn't have an HD2 to throw down and do a real side by side comparison, but just looking at the pic above and comparing it to any other we've posted and you'll see the difference right away. The display is bright and crisp and the OS was responsive enough -- and with the device set to ship in April, things are looking pretty posiitve to meet that date -- and while the display doesn't wow like the HTC HD2, it doesn't seems too cramped to be useable. HTC this morning made its presence felt at Mobile World Congress by launching multiple smartphones, including its new Android 2.1 flagship. Previously known as the Bravo, the Desire becomes HTC's version of the Nexus One without Google branding. HTC Legend hands-on
OK, we admit it -- we're complete HTC fanboys here today at MWC. But c'mon, can you really blame us? Today's HTC launch -- including the HD mini, Legend, and Desire -- while not surprisingly lacking a Windows Phone 7 announcement, was still full of some very, very fine hardware. The Legend is an all-metal set -- the housing is the frame of the handset -- and like the other launches, this one features the updated version of Sense, a new optical trackpad (which seemed to behave quite well) and a stunning 3.2-inch AMOLED display. Adobes Creative Suite Applikationen zu erstellen, die auf Linux-basierten Betriebssystemen für Mobiltelefone ablaufen. Centro Oberhausen bekommt einen Apple Store
Das Centro in Oberhausen, Europas größtes Shopping- und Einkaufszentrum, ist bald um eine Attraktion reicher. Apple wird dort voraussichtlich noch in diesem Jahr einen Retail Store eröffnen. Interessenten können über Apples deutsche Webseite bereits Initiativbewerbungen für einen Job im Store-Team Oberhausen einreichen.
Damit steht nach München, Hamburg und Frankfurt der vierte Standort für einen deutschen Apple Store fest, weitere Filialen sind wohl für Hamburg, Berlin und Stuttgart geplant.

MWC 2010 Noch ist Flash 10.1 für Mobiltelefone nicht verfügbar, aber Adobe zeigte Golem.de, was mit Flash 10.1 möglich ist. STMicroelectronics hat mit dem L3G4200D einen neuen 3-Achsen-Bewegenssensor vorgestellt. Dieser besteht aus einem einzigen Sensor für alle drei Ebenen und soll damit eine genauere und zuverlässigere Bestimmung der räumlichen Lage ermöglichen. HTC "Superphone" Desire: Wie Googles Nexus One mit Sense-Oberfläche und Flash

HTC hat auf dem Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona das allseits heftig erwartete Modell Desire vorgestellt und eigentlich wurde diese Vorfreude auch nicht enttäuscht: Das HTC Desire entspricht mehr oder weniger dem Google Phone Nexus One, nur dass das Desire mit der geschätzten Sense-Nutzeroberfläche und Flash-10.1-Kompatibilität kommt, außerdem wurde der Trackball durch ein Trackpad ersetzt. Unter der Haube des Desire schnurrt ein Snapdragon mit 1 GHz und auf der Vorderseite prangt ein 3,7-Zoll-AMOLED-Display. Adobe AIR: Flash u. mehr für App-Entwickler
Adobe hat auf dem MWC AIR für mobile Geräte vorgestellt, eine konsistente Laufzeitumgebung für unabhängige Anwendungen, die aus dem Open Screen Project (OSP) hervorgehen. Das OSP ist eine von Adobe angestoßene Initiative, die inzwischen fast 70 Unternehmen, Organisationen und Dienstleister umfasst. Mit der noch in diesem Jahr geplanten Unterstützung der Android-Plattform durch AIR sollen Entwickler eine leistungsfähige Umgebung für die Erstellung hochwertiger nativer Apps erhalten. AIR profitiert laut Adobe von speziellen Funktionalitäten des Flash Player 10.1, ist für hohe Performance auf mobilen Geräten optimiert und so konstruiert, dass es durch die native Nutzung vorhandener Geräteressourcen reichhaltigere und umfassendere Anwendungen ermöglicht.

Quench: Motorolas 8. Android-Streich
Motorola stellte gestern auf der MWC u.a. sein bereits achtes mit Android betriebenes Smartphone vor. In den USA als "Cliq XT" exklusiv von T-Mobile vertrieben, wird es andernorts "Quench" heissen (etwa: [Durst] löschen, aber auch abschrecken, abhärten). Es hat einen 3,1-Zoll Touchscreen mit virtueller Tastatur und bietet einen integrierten Medienplayer, 5 Megapixel-Kamera sowie die Motorola-Kreation "Motoblur" als User Interface. Dies soll Social Networks wie Facebook, MySpace, aber auch Twitter integrieren. Flash soll via Flash Lite unterstützt werden. Quench wird zunächst mit Android 1.5 ("Cupcake") ausgeliefert. MeeGo: Maemo und Intel verschmelzen
Nokia und Intel planen, ihre jeweiligen Linux-basierenden Mobilplattformen Maemo und Moblin zusammenzuführen. If you thought that machining a phone from a single block of aluminum might cause RF issues in a phone well, you can apparently think again, because HTC just went there with its freshly-introduced Legend. It seems mini versions of larger and pricier sets that still deliver the goods have become de rigeur amongst hardware manufacturers at MWC in 2010. Enter HTC's HD mini, a scaled down version of the beefy HTC HD2 with a 3.2-inch HVGA display for customers who want all the joys that device delivers without the need to actually use the beast itself -- or find somewhere to store it. The housing design is typical HTC beautiful, but in a very unique departure, the fasteners used to hold the device together are exposed and become part of its style. HTC Desire first hands-on
Well, we just got a little up close and personal with HTC's "superphone," the Desire. What you're looking at is basically the Nexus One, sans trackball (though plus an optical touch area). Certainly the specs are the same, though you've got the new Sense UI on board for good measure. At a glance the phone actually doesn't seem as snappy as we were expecting, and there are obviously a few kinks to work out with some of the new Sense concepts (Leap for instance -- the pinch-to-card view -- was giving our demo person some trouble). Still, the Desire is definitely high on our gadget lust list right now. We're obviously reserving final judgment for a later date, but until we get some more time with this guy, feast your eyes on the gallery below.

Ericsson hat auf dem GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona ein 4G-Netz mit 1 Gbit (1000 Mbit) je Sekunde vorgestellt. Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 und Zune-Integration
Der weltgrößte Software-Hersteller präsentierte gestern auf dem Mobile World Congress (MWC) das Smartphone-Betriebssystem "Windows Phone 7". Microsofts neues Mobil-OS strukturiert alle Anwendungen in Themenbereichen, sogenannten "Hubs". Laut einem Bericht der Los Angeles Times wird Apple im iBook Store sein FairPlay-DRM (Digital Rights Management) verwenden. Microsoft Pure, Turtle to be low-end but use Tegra
Microsoft's Pure and Turtle media phones have been given more tangible details thanks to the discovery of their firmware and the image creator that makes their firmware possible. The Sharp-made phones will be far from the specs needed for Windows Phone 7 and carry resolutions of 480x320 for the larger Pure and just 320x240 for the squat Turtle. Both will still be at least moderately quick using some variant of NVIDIA's Tegra, though whether this is the original or the dual-core Tegra 250 isn't known.

Walter Issacson picked to write Steve Jobs' authorized biography?
Here's something we're really glad to see. According to the NYTimes, Steve Jobs is letting former Time editor Walter Isaacson write a book covering the entire life of the Apple CEO, from his youth in the Silicon Valley through his years at NeXT, Pixar and Apple.
Mr. Jobs, who will turn 55 on Feb. 24, has invited Mr. Isaacson to tour his childhood home, one person with knowledge of the discussion said.
Isaccson is currently the chief executive and president of the Aspen Institute, a nonprofit education and policy studies organization based in Washington.

AT&T may carry 3G iPad, downplay netbooks
A contentious rumor Monday evening suggests AT&T may not only carry the iPad in its retail stores but give the Apple tablet favorable treatment. An insider at the carrier claims it will stock the 3G-capable iPad and give it display prominent enough that it would crowd out competitors. The BGR tipster understands that most stores would convert one or more of their existing netbook promo spaces into a "pretty substantial" iPad test area.
