HTC HD2 review
When Microsoft finally launched Windows Mobile 6.5 earlier this year, there may have been lots of fanfare, but there was little honest excitement. After a tepid showing at MWC in Barcelona followed by the proper launch this October, no one was exactly up in arms over the OS, though support from the big M's partners was characteristically plentiful. Still, there was nary a ray of light to be seen in the otherwise bleak and basic landscape of handset offerings until the HD2 came along. NPD: 48% of retail desktop sales in US are Macs
Mac desktops represented nearly half of all desktops sold at US retail shops in October, the NPD Group said a new study. About 47.7 percent of desktops were iMacs, Mac minis or Mac Pros, an increase from 45 percent in April and a sharp surge from just 33 percent in October 2008. Mac notebooks also saw a sequential gain from 30 percent in April to 34 percent last month, though this was a drop from 38 percent a year earlier.

News: AT&T offering refurb iPhone 3GS units online
AT&T is now offering refurbished iPhone 3GS units through its online store. Refurbished 16GB models are priced at $149, while 32GB units are selling for $249; both prices are with a two-year contract, and both white and black units are available. In the past, AT&T’s refurbished units have been listed with a notice that they include a warranty of 90 or more and may have “minor scratches.”

Windows Mobile looks to be getting new native keyboard in 6.5.3
It's not exactly a wild accusation to say that the current native on-screen keyboard in Windows 6.5 is, well, bad, and it looks like Microsoft has now picked up on what HTC and others have been not-so-subtly hinting at. While's it's obviously still not official subject to change, that fresh new keyboard you see above has been turned up in Windows Mobile 6.5 build 28002 by the folks at XDA, and is likely similar to what should eventually hit the public in Windows Mobile 6.5.3. Our good friends at Shanzai.com have recently got their hands on what they believe to be the king of all MacBook Air KIRFs, and put it through the ringer. Expecting a laugh riot? Not so fast -- what we have here is a pretty decent netbook, apparently. Hulu jumps 47% to 856m views in October
Hulu has recorded one of the largest gains in viewers in its short history, according to new data from Comscore. In October, the multi-studio video site hosted almost 856 million viewers, its best ever result and a 47 percent jump from September. The results were well behind Google's 10.5 billion views and 37.7 percent share of web video in the US but were enough to give Hulu second place with 3.1 percent, about twice as much as its next-best challengers.

The plug-in automates color, contrast and dynamic range adjustments, while helping to detect and correct red eye in photographs. MAPublisher 8.2 updates geospatial PDF export
Avenza has updated its mapping software for Adobe Illustrator, MAPublisher 8.2. The software produces maps from GIS data for both electronic and print distribution, including GIS data format shapefile, with all attributes and georeferencing intact. It can also handle ESRI, MapInfo, MicroStation, AutoCAD, Google and U.S. Government files, preserving all GIS data attributes and geographic parameters. MAPublisher exports data in a variety of standard GIS formats and exports documents to geospatial PDF.

It still won't sell you one, but Carmangi has just launched the official website for its Android-based WebStation tablet / MID, and cleared up a few remaining details in the process. AT&T promos bring free BlackBerry, no iPhone deals
AT&T dipped into Black Friday deals with word today of its Thanksgiving promo. The cell carrier promises unspecified deals on Friday itself starting from midnight but plans a major promo for each day of the weekend as well as Monday. Saturday will focus exclusively on BlackBerries and will give away the Curve 8310 or Pearl 8110 for free on a smartphone contract. Price drops are also due for the Curve 8320, which will cost $50, and the Curve 8900 at $100.

Apple sues company for producing knockoff MagSafe adapters
Apple has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Media Solutions Holdings, a company that has allegedly been producing and distributing knockoff MagSafe power adapters. The Apple patent, No. D478,310, was initially issued in 2003. The defendant sells the AC adapters, including the 60W and 85W variants, on several websites such as laptopsforless.com, ereplacements.com and laptopacadpater.com.

To think, it's been over five years since we last tackled how to get music off your iPod, as opposed to the other way around. Back then, the classic model had only recently added the infamous click wheel (while still rocking the monochrome screen, mind you), iPod nano was still called the mini, and viewing photos was a brand new feature worthy of having its own line. It's time to take another look at how to transfer media of all sorts -- audio, video, and pictures -- from a variety of iPods and iPhones back to your Windows or Mac OS X machine.

Norway's Statkraft kick-starts world's first osmotic power plant
It may only produce enough power to heat an electric kettle at the moment, but Norway's Statkraft says that its new, first-of-its-kind osmotic power plant could be producing as much energy as a small wind farm by 2015, and continue to grow from there on out. To do that, the company guides fresh water and salt water into separate chambers that are divided by an artificial membrane, and when the process of osmosis takes place -- salt molecules pulling freshwater through the membrane -- the pressure is increased on the sea water side. Normalerweise machen eher Nachrichten über Anbieter die Runde, deren Patente angeblich durch Apple verletzt werden. Im aktuellen Fall bezichtigt allerdings Apple einen Hersteller der Patentrechtverletzung. EU formally adopts file sharing rights
The European Parliament late yesterday officially approved a final key rule in its telecoms package that will require legal rights for those threatened with losing Internet access in piracy cases. The measure will only allow EU member states to cut off access if it's deemed "appropriate, proportionate and necessary within a democratic society." Any decision will require an objective procedure that allows the accused to defend themselves as well as presumptions of innocence and a right to privacy.

BKA gelingt Schlag gegen Internetkriminelle
Mit einer groß angelegten Razzia im Auftrag der Staatsanwaltschaft Bonn sind das Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) und Polizisten der Bundesländer am 24. November gegen Internetbetrüger in Deutschland und Österreich vorgegangen. Mehr als 200 Polizeibeamte durchsuchten nach Angaben des BKA in den Nachmittags- und Abendstunden 46 Wohnungen im gesamten Bundesgebiet. Auch in Österreich gab es vier Durchsuchungen. Insgesamt wurden vier Personen vorläufig festgenommen.

Future RED cameras delayed by chip problems
RED this week warned that its EPIC-X camera program would be delayed by 30 days due to a problem with its app-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips. Droid helps Motorola overtake Apple in brand loyalty
The launch of the Motorola Droid and Verizon's ad campaign have pushed Motorola's brand loyalty for the first time in recent memory, YouGov reported in its BrandIndex late last week. The Android phone maker passed Apple one week ago and, as of Friday the 20th, had a loyalty score among men of 29.3. By comparison, Apple has fallen from a recent high of 48.1 on the 9th, shortly after the Droid launch, to 22 on the 20th.

UK supermarket chain Tesco will soon begin carrying the iPhone, according to an announcement. Sales will be conducted by Tesco Mobile, a joint venture with O2, and provided not only via regular Tesco locations but on the web and through the company's nearly 100 dedicated Phone Shops. Infineon today said it would work with Nokia to develop chipsets for 4G mobile Internet based on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard. The deal won't be exclusive and will primarily ensure that Infineon 4G hardware will support Nokia's technology licenses. Ganz Europa profitiert davon, dass in mehr und mehr Ländern (mal abgesehen von diesem hier) das iPhone nicht mehr an einen Provider gebunden ist, in England bekommt man das iPhone jetzt sogar bei Lidl, äh Tesco, gleich neben den Billigsocken. Rechtzeitig zur Weihnachtszeit soll es losgehen, wann genau ist noch unbekannt. Für 30 £ (ca. 33 Euro) im Monat soll es eine Komplettflatrate geben, inklusive Websurfen, SMS und Telefoniere. Looks like there’s going to be a new breed of Apple down local UK supermarkets, with news giant UK retailer Tesco plans to begin offering the device in its larger shops.Meanwhile, Orange has applied significant discounts on iPhones it is selling - though only in Slovakia, where the Dream plan starting at a monthly fee of €38, customers can get the iPhone for 99, which is €220 cheaper than normal. With a 3G programme, customers can save up to €100 when buying an iPhone. The Tesco deal has been enabled by a deal between the supermarket giant and original UK iPhone carrier, O2. The BlackBerry Curve line fended off the iPhone 3GS to claim the title of top-selling phone in the US, the NPD Group said this week. Tja, Pech gehabt, falls ihr einen Original-Kindle der ersten Generation habt, dann bringt euch nämlich das gestern angekündigte Firmware-Update für den Kindle nichts, das jetzt auch über die Amazonseite verfügbar ist (siehe Quelle-Link). Für alle anderen Kindle User (die mit Kindle DX oder Kindle 2) hat das Update neben der Verlängerung der Batterielaufzeit um 85 % auch den nativen PDF-Reader an Bord. Der hat allerdings ein großes Problem: er kommt ohne Zoom, so dass diverse PDFs nach wie vor auf dem Kindle unlesbar sind

Das World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) hat den Entwurf eines Standards vorgestellt, der eine Browserschnittstelle für Dateien spezifiziert. iPhone to go on sale at UK's biggest supermarket chain, Tesco
Looks like there’s going to be a new breed of Apple down local UK supermarkets, with news giant UK retailer Tesco plans to begin offering the device in its larger shops.Meanwhile, Orange has applied significant discounts on iPhones it is selling - though only in Slovakia, where the Dream plan starting at a monthly fee of €38, customers can get the iPhone for 99, which is €220 cheaper than normal. With a 3G programme, customers can save up to €100 when buying an iPhone. The Tesco deal has been enabled by a deal between the supermarket giant and original UK iPhone carrier, O2. Firmware Update für Kindle: hält demnächst bis zu 85 % länger durch

Amazon hat ein Firmware-Upgrade für den Kindle angekündigt, das ihm im Wireless-Betrieb eine auf sieben Tage (von bisher vier) verlängerte Batterielaufzeit bescheren soll. Ausserdem bringt es einen nativen PDF-Reader mit. Das Firmware-Update soll bei allen neu ausgelieferten Kindles schon drauf sein und allen "neuen Modellen" demnächst via Whispernet zuteil werden. Besitzer von nicht näher bezeichneten "älteren Modellen" bekommen nur den PDF-Reader, der PDFs auch ins Kindle-eigene Format wandeln kann.

Wir haben ja schon so ein paar Hackintoshs geshen, aber der von Will Urbina namens OS Xbox Pro ist definitiv einer der am perfektesten gemachten. Wills Job ist eigentlich Video Editor, deswegen hat er sich mit einem EFI-X Dongle eine Kiste gebaut, auf der Final Cut Pro läuft: 2,93 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q950S, eine NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT Grafikkarte, 8 GB RAM, 16 GB SSD und vier normale Festplatten: je eine für Windows 7 und OS X und zwei weitere in einem RAID0 fürs Video-Editing. Hands-On: Emblaze ELSE

Das Teil mit seiner futuristischen Oberfläche lässt heutige Smartphones doch ein wenig altbacken aussehn: ELSE, die früher mal Emblaze Mobile hiessen haben in London ihr ein bisschen verwirrend bezeichnetes Smartphone First Else vorgestellt. Von Grund auf neu aufgebaut in den letzten zwei Jahren läuft es nun unter Access Linux Platform (ALP) 3.0, ein Mobile OS, was wir eigentlich schon seit Februar für ausgestorben hielten. Das First Else kommt im zweiten Quartal 2010. Im ersten Hands-On waren die Kollegen von Engadget Mobile auf jeden Fall schonmal von der Bedienungsfreundlichkeit schwer begeistert, mal sehen, ob sich das OS auch durchsetzen kann.

Intel: New 32-nm Desktop Core i3 and i5 Unveiled
Intel officially unveiled the list of new CPUs Core i3 and i5, engraved at 32-nm and dedicated to desktop computer. They all should be available in large volume in January 2010.
There are different than the Core i5 found in the iMac. First, they only have 2 cores instead of four in the iMacs. However, they sport an embedded GPU which will allow Pc manufacturers to offer entry-level computer at lower price, however one should not expect amazing 3D rendering performance for those graphical solutions. After the first reported problem identified with iMac Core i7 (unstable and flashing display), a new issues are arising. Some users could not boot their iMac, the computer remained inactive, even though in some cases one could have heard the classical 'bong' before a definitive silence. Sprint finalizes Virgin Mobile USA acquisition, rushes out to snag some cranberry sauce
It's hard to say if these guys were just looking to get this whole thing finalized before the holiday break, but either way, all the requisite i's have been dotted and t's crossed. As of today, Sprint Nextel has acquired Virgin Mobile USA -- a process that began back in late July -- and frankly, there's nothing you can do about it. The move will obviously position Sprint as a bigger player in the prepaid space, but outside of that presumably true assumption, it's tough to say what else the newfound lovers will do together. New iPhone/AT&T information offered by analyst
Stock Analyst Turley Miller offers some of his research as it refutes many of the claims made by analyst Brian Marshall (video) yesterday. Among them:
AT&T's subsidy for the iPhone is $400, not $450 as Marshall states. Best Buy buys 16GB iPhones from Apple for $542, and sells it for $199 with a 24 month service contract. AT&T reimburses Best Buy $400. Therefore, Best Buy's margin is $57/iPhone.
That subsidy wouldn't change if other carriers offered the iPhone as Marshal states. Tim Cook stated at a earnings call that it hadn't in other countries where they went from exclusive to multiple carriers that the subsidies didn't change.

Verizon goes after Sprint's 'most dependable 3G network' ad claim
Looks like Verizon's addicted to the sweet taste of success: following its victory over AT&T regarding the Map For That ads, Big Red's complaining to the The National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus about Sprint's "America's most dependable 3G network" tagline. Verizon says that a recent Nielsen survey shows its network drops fewer calls than Sprint's, and for now the bureaucrats agree -- the board's asked Sprint to stop airing the ads. iPhones Use 50% of the Worldwide 3G Mobile Network Traffic
A recent study conducted by AdMob indicates that iPhones capture 50% of the worldwide 3G network bandwidth. In addition, this figure keeps growing as it increased by 7 points during he last month. Other mobile phone OS are far behind, Symbian collecting 25% (-4% for the last month) and Android 11% (+1% for the last month). If one looks at RAIM Blackberry OS and Windows Mobile they respectively obtain 7% and 3% respectively.If those figures illustrate the usage associated with the OS (and not necessarily the number of units being used), it demonstrates that the iPhone is definitely the true communicating mobile handheld device expected by most users. Its online services, AppStore and iTunes Store as well as all iPhone-dedicated services developed by third-parties are further increasing the bandwidth usage too. iPhoto-Update verbessert iPod touch-Kompatibilität
Gerade veröffentlicht, bringt das über die Mac-Softwareaktualisierung zu beziehende, 13MB große iPhoto-Update eine Hand voll Fehlerbehebungen für Apples Foto-Verwaltung. Version 8.1.1 optimiert die Genauigkeit und die Leistungsfähigkeit der Gesichtserkennungsfunktionen und behebt zudem kleinere Probleme bei der Buchbestellung und bei der iPod touch-Unterstützung. In Sachen Gesichtserkennung gibt Apple einen wichtigen Hinweis: "Wenn Sie mit iPhoto 8.1 Fotos von Personen importiert haben, sollten Sie nach dem Installieren des Updates 8.1.1 einen zusätzlichen Schritt ausführen. Wählen Sie alle betroffenen Fotos aus, klicken Sie Sie mit gedrückter ctrl-Taste darauf, und wählen Sie im angezeigten Kontextmenü die Funktion "Fehlende Gesichter erkennen". Auf diese Weise werden die Gesichter auf den Fotos erkannt und sämtliche in iPhoto 8.
