OS Xbox Pro casemod build video is mesmerizing
We've certainly seen plenty of hackintoshes in our time, but Will Urbina's OS Xbox Pro is also one of the cleanest casemods we've ever seen. Built so that Will can run Final Cut Pro for his job as a video editor, the machine is based on an EFI-X hackintosh dongle, and inside it sports an 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550s paired with an NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT card, 8GB of RAM, an 16GB SSD, and four traditional hard drives: one each to boot Windows 7 and OS X, and two 500GB 7,200rpm drives in a RAID0 array for video editing. New iPhone/AT&T information
Stock Analyst Turley Miller offers some of his research as it refutes many of the claims made by analyst Brian Marshall (video) yesterday. Among them:
AT&T's subsidy for the iPhone is $400, not $450 as Marshall states. Best Buy buys 16GB iPhones from Apple for $542, and sells it for $199 with a 24 month service contract. AT&T reimburses Best Buy $400. Therefore, Best Buy's margin is $57/iPhone.
That subsidy wouldn't change if other carriers offered the iPhone as Marshal states. Tim Cook stated at a earnings call that it hadn't in other countries where they went from exclusive to multiple carriers.

Chrome OS like lightning from a USB key: we could get used to this
We finally got around to prepping a USB key so we could boot to Chrome OS natively, and let us tell you: it's a world of difference. Of course, running something natively instead of virtualized is always going to be a treat, but what we're seeing with Chrome OS is actually on par performance-wise with our crazy expectations for a stripped-down OS. It boots in mere seconds and loads websites with the best of them. LG's Monaco (IQ) spotted in Telus garb, rocking WinMo 6.5 and Snapdragon

Apple calls for permanent injunction against Psystar
Following a recent legal victory, Apple is now calling for a permanent injunction against Psystar's operations. If granted the injunction would prevent Psystar from doing anything which might violate Apple copyrights, including bypassing controls in Mac OS X which prevent it from being freely installed on any Intel system. The company would similarly be banned from sharing the necessary decryption technology with others.

Palm phones face serious backup failures
Owners of Palm's newer phones have encountered a flaw in its online backup system that has wiped out contacts and calendars. A portion of users note that backups sent to Palm's Profile cloud service from a Pre (and now Pixi) are being corrupted and blank out any synchronized data when the phone has to be reset or restored. Those without a local backup, such as through an app like Missing Sync, have no choice but to recreate the data from scratch.

Kindle firmware update promises 85 percent battery boost, native PDF reader
We're not quite sure what sort of black magic it's worked to make it happen, but it looks like Amazon is really taking the art of firmware updates to a new level with the latest upgrade for the Kindle. Not only does it finally add native PDF support (which would have gotten folks rightly excited on its own), but it promises to boost battery life by a full 85 percent. That translates to about seven days of use with the wireless on, and is apparently the result of a six month firmware improvement and testing program -- can we get these folks working on other devices? Kindle 2 gets native PDFs, 85% longer battery life
Amazon today gave its regular-size Kindle a lift through a firmware upgrade. It now has the same native PDF support as the larger Kindle DX and no longer needs a conversion through e-mail. Active battery life is also a large 85 percent longer and should last for about a full week with 3G turned on versus four days with the previous firmware.

Continued problems for new iMacs
As we noted in an article soon after the new iMacs were released, they seem to be shipping with many problems. Then, it was Flash and system resource corruption. Now, it seems as though the Core i7 iMacs are shipping DOA or with cracked screens.

Apple, Live Nation pair on exclusive iTunes content
Apple has signed a deal with concert promoter Live Nation, in a deal that should see a number of recordings sold exclusively through iTunes. Both audio and video offerings are planned, which will be taken from concerts recorded in 80-plus venues equipped for capturing the material. Live Nation stages over 22,000 concerts annually, though it is likely that only a fraction will become available online.

News: iPhone users complain of ‘searching for service’ bug
A number of iPhone users are voicing their displeasure over a bug in iPhone software 3.1.2 that sees the phone randomly start searching for service. Wartungsarbeiten beendet
Die Wartungsarbeiten an den MTN-Servern sind abgeschlossen und der Hardwaretausch wurde vorgenommen. Aus diesem Grund kam es zu einer Auszeit von ca. zwei Stunden. Schon vor einigen Wochen kamen Gerüchte auf, dass Apple den iTunes Store angeblich um Inhalte von Verlagen erweitern will. Magazine publishers said to be 'very close' to digital distribution deal
Rumors of magazine publishers striking a deal to make their content available for digital devices -- even a certain tablet -- have been around for quite a while now, but it looks like something may finally be close to really happening. iTunes continues to move toward presenting us with immediate musical experiences, this morning announcing a deal with Live Nation under which live gig recordings from venues across the USA will be offered exclusively for sale through the Apple music service.Distorted Loop reports the scheme will see Live Nation Studios offering exclusive recorded and filmed concerts from its network of "wired" venues for purchase and download only on iTunes. VUDU updates keep rolling by integrating Wikipedia
The VUDU web based architecture is evidently really paying off, because this makes the third VUDU update in the last month. The company tells us that since its UI is pulled from the web like any other website, it can continue to easily roll out updates. This week's addition is a welcomed one, as we'll no longer have to reach for our computer or handheld just to look up the details of a movie on Wikipedia. But what's even more useful is the fact that you can browse beyond the movie's Wikipedia entry to the actor's pages, etc., and links are even added so you can quickly get back to actor's list of movies available on VUDU. iPhone continues to encounter 'searching for service' bug
Some iPhone owners are still suffering from an issue preventing any kind of cellular connection, posters on Apple's support forums say. After entering an area with no carrier service, or simply at random, an iPhone may launch into a "searching for service" mode from which it does not return, even when back in a known coverage area. The only way of temporarily fixing the problem is said to be rebooting a phone.

Nein, Desktop-PC müssen nicht beweglich sein, aber gleich so immobil wie bei diesem PC Mod, das muss wohl der Macher selber beantworten. Der lässt nämlich seinen Schreibtisch, leider auch nicht die allerstylishste Variante, mit einem wassergekühlten PC fusionieren und herauskommt einer der sperrigsten Mods überhaupt. Sony VAIO X ultraportable gets the Hackintosh treatment
The Vaio X, aside from being thin and light, is notoriously difficult to mod -- simply put, there's not much room in there to play around! Besides, when you've spent well over a grand for a machine, you're not necessarily going to be gung-ho about digging in with your soldering gun. Still, when InsanelyMac forum member Asama was struck by inspiration (in the form of a Vaio P OS X image) he followed his heart -- and, much to the world's amusement, it installed on the Vaio X with few complications. Sure, it wasn't a flawless operation: the WiFi card is unsupported (as you probably guessed) but, that said, this is definitely an item of note for all the Hackintosh freaks in attendance. Mit dem inMotion Classic hat Altec Lansing einen würdigen Nachfolger für das inzwischen etwas angestaubte, aber von uns stets empfohlene iM600 im Programm, der sich nicht mehr nur mit iPods, sondern auch mit dem iPhone bestens versteht. Über Design lässt sich natürlich immer streiten, wir finden die 1970er Retro-Optik jedoch sehr gelungen.
Dank eines integrierten Akkus lässt sich das inMotion Classic auch unterwegs verwenden, der Standbügel des Geräts lässt sich hier alternativ auch als Tragegriff einsetzen oder für den Transport kompakt andocken. Einzig das Display ist etwas klein; dies ist zwar bei den meist kurzen Namen unserer Radiosender normalerweise kein Problem, das Classic kann allerdings auch die ID-Tags der vom iPod gespielten Musiktitel anzeigen und dies geschieht dann wenig effektiv in einer Art Laufschrift. Mac-User haben ja bekanntlich ihre Extratasse Tee, so wundert es nicht, dass das im Speakerbereich natürlich genauso ist. Mäuse zum Reisen sind nicht immer die schicksten Angelegenheiten. Süß und klein sind sie irgendwie alle, aber stylish? Selten. Elecoms neueste Maus hört auf den Namen Like a Spoon und könnte das bislang nicht eingelöste Versprechen einlösen, wobei dir Form weniger Löffel als Seife ist, aber Alleinstellungsmerkmale muss man sich manchmal selber schaffen. Gibt es erstmal nur in Japan für 8000 Yen (60 Euro) und wird wohl aber leider auch so bleiben, was uns die Erfahrung der letzten Jahre gelehrt hat.

Sony Ericsson already working on second version of Xperia Pureness, possibly Xperia Pureness 2?
Electric Pig is reporting that Sony Ericsson's already working on a followup to the Xperia Pureness. The designer of the original handset, Daniel Mauritzson, says that the second version of the Pureness will pack even less "features" than its predecessor, to hone in even further on the contrast between the handset and available smartphones. There's also been some murmuring of removing the buttons, apparently -- which makes us wonder if the next Pureness might not just be a four-inch long piece of black plastic we'll only be able to pretend to make calls on. Publishers closer to 'iTunes for magazines'
A coalition of magazine publishers is getting close to producing a digital storefront of its own that would produce a centralized portal for their titles, a leak hinted late Tuesday. Anonymous sources for the New York Observer claim Condé Nast, Hearst and Time are within weeks of a deal for a store that would offer both digital versions of their publications as well as physical copies. Time executive VP John Squires would leave his company to head up the new venture and is believed to be the originator.

Nintendo DSi LL sells 103k in two days, ripped open in two minutes
The newer, embiggened Nintendo DSi LL (as it's known in Tokyo Town) has been available to the kids in Japan since the beginning of the week, and Enterbrain, Inc. is reporting that Nintendo has pushed 103,524 units in its first two days. To perspectivize things, the DSi was snatched up to the tune of about 170,000 units in the same time period, while the PSPgo sold around 28,000 units. Core i7-based iMacs suffer cracked screens, DOA failures
Some buyers of the 27-inch Core i7 iMac are receiving unusuable systems, threads on Apple's support forums indicate. In a collection of cases the systems are failing to even turn on properly, at best sounding the Mac startup chime, always failing to display anything more. Apple is reportedly offering replacement iMacs for affected customers, but this may involve a shipping time of two weeks, as Core i7 is an upgrade option not normally sold at retail.

Symbian-based N97, Satio pulled from shops
Symbian has been dealt setbacks in recent days as both Nokia's N97 and Sony Ericsson's Satio appear to have been pulled due to likely quality concerns. The former isn't available on most carriers and is now no longer selectable through Vodafone UK; while visible online, choosing it redirects shoppers to the N97 mini. You'll go ga ga ga ga ga over Elecom's Like a Spoon mouse
Travel mice don't tend to be fashionable things. Tiny? Yes. Lookers? No. Elecom's latest, the Like a Spoon mouse, bucks that trend, following in a long line of tidily designed gadgets from the company. In terms of buttons it's got nuffin' on the OpenOfficeMouse, but it looks to fall to hand much more comfortably, with a soft effects coating on top and a stainless steel rim 'round the edge. The price is set at a somewhat steep ￥8,000 in Japan, which equates to about about $90, though sadly we doubt this one will be making the transference to America.

Bisher gab es ja nur die Beta von Google Maps für Android 2.0. Nun hat Google seine Navigations-App auf Geräte ausgedehnt, die mit 1.6 (Donut) oder höher laufen. Ist bisher aber leider nur in den USA erhältlich. Mit einem Trick lässt sich die bisher nur für die USA freigeschaltete GoogleMaps Navi jetzt auch bei uns nutzen, und zwar theoretisch auf jedem Android-Device (zum Beispiel dem Motorola Milestone), das mit Android ab 1.6 läuft: dazu muss man eine modifizierte GoogleMaps-Variante namens Maps-no-root-aligned.apk installieren, die man sich aus dem Netz runterladen kann, natürlich auf eigene Gefahr. HP steigert Gewinn im vierten Quartal um 14 Prozent
Hewlett-Packard hat im vierten Fiskalquartal einen Gewinnzuwachs von 14 Prozent erwirtschaftet. Gegenüber dem Zeitraum August bis Oktober 2008 stieg der GAAP-Nettogewinn auf 2,4 Milliarden Dollar (1,6 Milliarden Euro) oder 0,99 Dollar je Aktie. Der Umsatz lag bei 30,8 Milliarden Dollar (20,6 Milliarden Euro), acht Prozent weniger als im Vorjahresquartal.

Das geschwungene CRVD-Wahnsinnsdisplay von Ostendo lief an der CES 2008 unter dem Alienware-Label, später gab sich dann NEC die Ehre. Aber offensichtlich waren das nur kurze Flirts, denn Ostendo verkauft das gebogene 43-Zoll-Monster mit einer Auflösung von 2880 x 900 Pixeln seit Ende August in Eigenregie. Laut Ostendo hat das Militär bisher die meisten Bildschirme gekauft, aber es gibt wohl auch ein paar Gamer, die sich von einem 6500 Dollar-Preisschild nicht schrecken lassen. Bericht: Wikipedia verliert ehrenamtliche Mitarbeiter
Im ersten Quartal 2009 hat die Online-Enzyklopädie Wikipedia mehr als 49.000 ehrenamtliche Autoren verloren. A post by The Kindle Team over on Facebook has made clear that Amazon is aware of the shortcoming, and it's currently toiling away on a "better way to organize your growing Kindle libraries." Minima ist schwer zu beschreiben. Das letzte Mal als ich ähnliche Schwierigkeiten hatte, war bei Eliss (<a href=”http://www.taptoplay.de/2009/05/05/eliss-neue-spielkonzepte-braucht-das-land/”>hier vorgestellt</a>). Minima hat, Name ist Programm: minimalistische Grafik. Die Grafik erinnert an ein vorbeilaufendes Feld mit Leuchtdioden, die in vier Farben aufleuchten: Weiß, Gelb, Violett und Pink. Man selbst hat einen weißen Pixel, der am unteren Bildschirmrand hin- und herbewegt wird. Ein Tap auf den linken Bildschirmrand bewegt ihn nach links, ein Tap auf den rechten, bewegt ihn nach rechts. Tappt man eine farbige Fläche an, nimmt der anfangs gelbe Pixel die Farbe der Fläche an wobei schwarz und weiß neutral sind und der Pixel diese Farben nicht annehmen kann.

IntelliScanner has released its Wine Collector mini, a software and hardware package for scanning barcodes and organizing wine collections. The scanner tracks wines based on the barcodes found on almost all wine bottles, while the software automatically recognizes wines, organizes them and visualizes collections in a virtual cellar. The scanner is USB-powered, rechargeable, and has memory for retaining scans until the data can be offloaded.

Early Core i9 benchmarks promising, make you wonder why you even bothered with Core i7
Immediate obsolescence is an age old problem in the computer industry, but it doesn't look like the upcoming Core i9 "Gulftown" processor is going to do anything to solve it. Word is from early benchmarks of the upcoming Intel processor is that it bests the current Core i7 at the top of the heap with speed gains as large as 50% -- directly in line with its addition of two cores on top of the Core i7's existing four. Of course, six 2.8GHz cores aren't quite as exponentially helpful when applied to non-optimized tasks, but with most major modern software development aimed at better utilizing multiple cores, the core overkill of Core i9 will likely prove increasingly useful over time. At the start, however, Core i9's improvements will come at a premium:

IBM to Drop the CELL?
According to the last news and tidbits, IBM might have decided to stop the development of its Cell CPU, a program initiated with Toshiba. If it is now present in servers and soon in TV, it became famous for being the CPU powering the Sony game station PS3, where it delivers amazing results. It remains unclear what could have pushed IBM to stop improving this CPU. It could be linked to the limited market and the specific and difficult to learn SDK. However, fans of the PS3 should not worry too much, as the development does not imply production and IBM will keep producing the CPU till the end of the life cycle of the PS3. It will then be possible that GPGPU would be the system selected for the entire 3D rendering and all tasks, making a single and powerful graphic card the main component of the future game stations.

TI introduces the eZ430-Chronos development platform... and sports watch
If there's one thing wireless networking developers have been clamoring for, it's the ability to take their reference platform mobile. Extremely mobile. TI's apparently heard this cry, as it's just introduced the eZ430-Chronos, a fully-capable wireless dev platform contained entirely within a sports watch. Yeah, it's just about the geekiest thing we've ever seen, and at $49 it's even kind of a steal -- especially since it doubles as a heart monitor out of the box. Ostendo now selling CRVD display directly; multiple CRVD display rig blows minds on video
We first saw Ostendo's crazy CRVD monitor at CES 2008 with Alienware branding, and then again at Macworld 2009 with an NEC label, but it looks like those were just flirtations: the monster 2880 x 900 quad-DLP display has been quietly on sale directly from the mothership since late August. Ostendo tell us most of the units sold have been for defense simulation and training, but there are apparently some gamers out there hardcore enough to stomach the $6,499 price tag -- including the crown prince of Dubai, who's purchased "multiple units." Buffalo intros USB 3.0 external hard drive
Buffalo Technology has introduced the DriveStation HD-HXU3, a new series of external hard drives featuring USB 3.0 interfaces. The high speed connection option is claimed to support transfer rates of up to 625MB/s, beating USB 2.0 and even FireWire by a considerable margin. Users can still connect using the current USB standard, however the transfer rates drop to approximately 480Mb/s.

The Python-based job manager utilizes Amazon's EC2 compute loud to process renderings and simulations, but without requiring the user to leave the Houdini interface. Klausner takes aim at RIM, Motorola over visual voicemail patents
It's been quite a few months since we've heard anything from Klausner Technologies, but it looks like the company has finally decided on its next set of targets that are allegedly infringing on its now infamous visual voicemail patents. As announced in a pair of expectedly terse press releases, Klausner says that both RIM and Motorola have now crossed into lawsuit territory with the Blackberry Bold 9700 and Motorola CLIQ, although it isn't specifying what sort of result it's looking for, or exactly how the two devices are infringing on its patents (at least some other RIM and Motorola devices are apparently covered under licenses granted to mobile operators). iPhone camera mod for magnification: because you can
We've thought before how nice it might be to have some powers of magnification on the iPhone's cam but are we going to go out and mod our unit? Probably not, but that doesn't mean we can't admire someone else's work. Taking various lenses and attaching them to the lid of a jar, the modder quite carefully built a contraption that looks a little "hobo Steampunk" to us, but we're still fairly impressed with this little gadget. Review: NBA Live for iPhone
You might think it would be tough to slim down all the gameplay elements of a feature-rich console title like NBA Live to work on the iPhone. And you'd be right -- NBA Live is a bit of a hodgepodge, mixing elements of awesomeness with assorted weaknesses that detract from the rest of the game.
