HP's 3rd quarter results hurt by budget PCs
HP this afternoon revealed mixed results for its quarter ended in October. The company's net earnings climbed 14 percent year-over-year to $2.4 billion, but its revenue dropped by 8 percent to $30.8 billion in the same time frame. It credits the profit boost to cost-cutting measures but saw its revenue drop across the board in every category, including the Personal Systems Group that handles its common PC business.

Sony recorders capture 1,072 hours, play MP3s
Sony on Monday introduced a new range of digital voice recorders with MP3 music playback capability. The ICD-UX200 and ICD-UX300F have a built-in, flip-out USB connector for easy transfer of files and can double as thumb drives for transferring other types of files. Mimo intros lowest priced touchscreen monitor
Mimo introduced what it touts as the industry's lowest priced auxiliary monitor on Monday, the 7-inch iMo Pivot Touch. It has a display with 800x480 resolution, 350cd/m2 brightness and a 400:1 contrast ratio. Eee PC 1005HR unboxed complete with 1366 x 768 display
It's taken ASUS a while, but there's finally an Eee PC with more than 600 pixels of vertical resolution -- the new Eee PC 1005HR sports a 10.1-inch 1366 x 768 display, which is good enough for 720p HD. Of course, it's debatable whether or not the 1.6GHz Atom N280 and integrated GMA 950 graphics can actually make decent use of that much screen, but at least you'll be able to rock some huge spreadsheets. New iPhone ads highlight Verizon's network drawbacks
Apple is set to launch two new TV ads in response to Verizon's criticism of the company's 3G network. Both ads focus on the iPhone's ability to maintain a voice call while simultaneously using features that require a data connection. The first sequence shows the iPhone interface as the user checks an e-mail, changes reservations and orders flowers without ending each call. The second spot features an iPhone user talking to a friend while checking movie times, sending the theater location and checking out a restaurant.

Airfoil Speakers Touch update restores product graphics
Rogue Amoeba says it has released v1.0.2 of Airfoil Speakers Touch, a companion app for the company's Airfoil desktop client. The former streams various forms of Mac audio to handhelds. The update makes only one change, which is to restore images of Apple hardware and software to in-app displays.

Apple comments on iPhone virus, security firm warns against jailbreaking
Apple has responded to the currently circulating iPhone worm that is enabling hackers to steal information from users with jailbroken iPhones, spokesperson Natalie Harrison said: "The worm affects only a very specific set of iPhone users who have jailbroken their iPhones and hacked it with unauthorized software.”"As we've said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones, and for good reason. Samsung STORY gets 2TB version, eSATA
Samsung has announced it will soon replace the existing STORY Station range with a a new STORY Station Plus external hard drive line, add a new 2TB model and update the entire range with the inclusion of an eSATA interface. Compared to the original STORY drives which only have a USB 2.0 connection, the new 3.5-inch STORY Station Plus drives have the ability to transfer data at a 3-gigabit per second speed, or about six times faster than the outgoing models. A USB 2.0 port remains for wider compatibility.

Creative intros 3rd-gen Vado HD with better video
Quickly turning around its pocket camcorders, Creative today added a third-generation Vado HD to its range. Google Maps Nav hits Android 1.6 ahead of iPhone
Google today gave Android a further edge by porting Google Maps Navigation to Android 1.6 phones. The update gives the T-Mobile G1, myTouch 3G and some international devices support for the turn-by-turn navigation system that was previously limited to the only Android 2.0 device, the Motorola Droid.

AT&T offers up short-term data passes
AT&T today countered efforts by Sprint, Verizon and Virgin Mobile in mobile data by adding the Data Connect Pass as an alternative to its subscriptions. The packages give occasional travelers the option of using 3G through a USB stick or similar device without having to commit beyond what they need. It also avoids unnecessary overage fees and lets users top up for the amount of necessary time if they run out of bandwidth before the usage period expires.

News: AdMob: iPhone accounts for 50% of smartphone ad requests
According to the latest data from mobile advertising firm AdMob, the iPhone accounts for 50% of all worldwide smartphone ad requests. Creative rolls out third gen Vado HD pocket camcorder
Creative sure seems to be taking the incremental approach to upgrades with its Vado HD pocket camcorders, but if you've found the previous two models just a tad lacking, you might want to consider the company's newly announced 3rd gen model. Malicious worm targets jailbroken iPhones
A new worm has begun targeting iPhones and iPod touches, however it only appears to attack jailbroken devices, according to the security company Sophos. The worm, which works in a similar way to the recent 5 Euro scam, was reportedly discovered after a Dutch ISP noticed unusually high volumes of data traffic.

AT&T's new DataConnect Pass plans serve up data a la carte
AT&T is following Verizon's lead today with the introduction of new prepaid broadband plans targeted directly at netbook and laptop users who find themselves out of WiFi range (and in desperate need of email) every once in a while. The so-called DataConnect Pass plans exactly mirror Verizon's pricing, which means you can get 75MB as a "day pass" for $15, 250MB as a weekly deal for $30, or a half gig per month for $50. Like Verizon, you're far better off getting the 5GB postpaid plan if you're a heavy user here -- but if you find yourself needing wireless once in a blue moon, this may very well be the way to go. Early Core i9 tests show up to 50% boost
Despite being more than a month away from the public, Intel's Core i9 (Gulftown) platform has already been tested and is shown to be potentially as fast as its design implies. The move from four to six cores has translated into an almost perfectly linear increase in speed for those apps that can use multiple processors. In tasks such as 3D modeling and video encoding, a 2.8GHz Core i9 is found by PCLab to be roughly 50 percent faster than a Core i7 at the same clock speed.

IBM PowerXCell-8i processor said to be last of its kind, but Cell will live on

Zahl der Twitter-Besucher erstmals rückläufig
Der Mikrobloggingdienst Twitter scheint allmählich an seine Wachstumsgrenze zu stoßen. PC shipments to climb 2.8 percent this year
The economy has bounced back quickly enough that the computer business will have seen a slight boost this year, Gartner said in a study published on Monday. The analyst group estimates that shipments will have overall climbed 2.8 percent in 2009 to about 298.9 million computers. It marks a sharp reversal from a forecast as late as September that had computers sinking 2 percent. A recovery of the sort is credited mostly to strong sales in the summer and "modest" anticipated growth in the summer.

Wii pay-per-view programming introduced in Japan

Gartner: Weltweiter PC-Markt legt 2009 um 2,8 Prozent zu
Die Marktforscher von Gartner erwarten laut einer neuen Prognose, dass 2009 weltweit 298,9 Millionen PCs verkauft werden. Das wären 2,8 Prozent mehr als 2008 (291 Millionen). Sony PS3 to Support 3D Stereoscopic TV
We already have several times mentioned that the next reason used by TV manufacturers to make us changing our brand new LCD or Plasma TV set to a new model will be driven by 3D stereoscopic TV technologies. Within couple of years, all customers should switch to such new equipment to further enjoy enhanced reality programs.
To demonstrate its leadership position, Sony announced that the PS3 will support 3D Stereoscopic TV technologies thank to a firmware update. In addition of being the only BD player able to be updated and improved via update of the BD profile, the PS3 seems to be the key factor used by Sony to regain its leadership position in video and game station markets. So, Sony will release SDK to game developers to create new games only available on the PS3 and making the current game station as rather good investment for the year to come. This could help Sony to better fight against Nintendo, while the Xbox is already way behind.

Apple devices now represent exactly half of all smartphone traffic on the Internet, AdMob said today in its report for October. The iPhone has gained 10 percent of absolute share since August to reach 50 percent while Symbian has fallen again to 25 percent. Apple has identical share in the US.

Those two words are likely to get people's ears up. The qualifier is that the security hole is with unsecured jailbroken iPhones. The equivelant in the computer world would be telling everyone to set the root password to "alpine" and enable root access. Then put your computer on the Internet without a firewall.
If you jailbreak your iPhone and don't change your password, it is the equivelant to physically giving it to a malicious hacker.

Korean iPhone launches Nov. 28th; prices revealed
Carrier KT has exposed details of the South Korean iPhone launch, confirming reports that the product will be released locally on November 28th. Plans are set to cost 45,000 ($39), 65,000 ($56) or 95,000 won ($82) per month on contract. Umfrage: Viele Bürger zweifeln an der Internetkompetenz der Politik
Ein Großteil der deutschen Bevölkerung zweifelt offenbar an der Internetkompetenz der Politiker. Im Rahmen einer repräsentativen Umfrage des Marktforschungsinstituts Aris im Auftrag des Bitkom, bei der 1003 Privatpersonen ab 14 Jahren befragt wurden, gaben 40 Prozent an, dass ihrer Meinung nach in der Politik nicht genügend Sachkenntnis über die technischen und wirtschaftlichen Hintergründe des Internets existiert. 44 Prozent halten die Kenntnisse der Politiker für ausreichend, weitere 16 Prozent sind unentschieden.

Cambridge's ProFORMA does 3D scanning with any stationary webcam
Never mind that silly name: ProFORMA (which stands for 'Probabilistic Feature-based On-line Rapid Model Acquisition', if you must know) is some cool system that turns any ordinary webcam into a powerful 3D scanning tool. In fact, a camera is pretty much all you need for some "on-line" modeling action -- no laser or green screen necessary -- meaning the 3D models are constructed on the spot while you slowly rotate the objects, although ProFORMA can also track fast moving objects as shown in the demo video after the break. Apple's Regent Street store in London reportedly generates sales of approximately £2,000 (~$3,300 USD) per square foot, according to an Evening Standard report. iPod Touch Camcorder Is Back
The announcement of new iPod last summer was a bit disappointing for the iPod Touch model. As we announced it couple of days before their release, the model would not feature the long rumored Camera. Once disassembled, the new iPod Touch model was indeed initially designed to sport a camera and WiFi 802.11n, even though Steve jobs was claiming it was not planned.
Today's rumor indicates that the camera should be finally finding its way in the Touch model for Spring 2010. This is not really surprising if one considers that the iPod nano already has one. The good news is that this camera will be similar to the one found in the iPhone and will support video and photo with a quality much higher than the one used in the iPod nano.

Fusion-IO: 1 TB/s Solution
Fusion-IO announced to have signed a contract with two states agencies to provide SSD solution of hundreds of TB of storage space with a bandwidth allowing reading and writing modes at a speed of 1 TB/s and a latency around 50 ms
To reach such performance level, they designed specific PCI Express 16x 2.0 sporting 8 ioDrive modules. To reach such transfer speed, Fusion-IO simply needs to assemble 220 units of such cards instead of around 55,000 plate-based HDs. Each card will offer 800,000 iops, and a bandwidth of 6 GB/s for a capacity of 5 TB. Of course, only a state agency can have the financial support to invest in such system.

EA Mobile releases Monopoly app for the iPhone
EA Mobile has expanded its line of iPhone and iPod touch games with the release of Monopoly. The app is based on the original board game, unlike the company's Here and Now edition that was previously released on the App Store. Players must choose a 3D token to move around the board and purchase properties, win money, and attempt to control key areas to push out their competitors.
