Microsoft roadmap puts Windows 8 in 2012
Microsoft should once again release its next mainstream version of Windows about three years after the last, a roadmap obtained this week reveals. The schedule has the major revision, tentatively titled "Windows 8," launching in 2012 or about three years after Windows 7. It will purportedly keep in step with a rhythm developed by Microsoft that has Microsoft launching major releases four years apart, as Windows Server 2008 is considered a major release where its R2 upgrade and even Windows 7 are both treated as "release updates."

AKVIS Sketch 10 update adds Snow Leopard support
AKVIS has introduced a new version of one of its photo effects apps, Sketch 10. The software converts photos into simulated watercolors and pencil drawings. The upgrade provides a new effects tool called Stroke Direction, which offers control over hatch direction and enhances realism. Three new presets have also been added, along with support for Snow Leopard and Windows 7.

Plaintiffs ask federal judge to force Apple to hand over the iPhone 1.1.1 source code in Jailbreaking case
Computerworld has the story. A lawsuit that has been dragging on since the iPhone 1.1.1 update that bricked a lot of jailbroken iPhones got an interesting twist this week. The plaintiffs in the case are requesting that Apple reveal the source code of the iPhone 1.1.1 software so they can ascertain whether or not Apple maliciously bricked jailbroken iPhones or whether is was just a by-product of the new software code.
Good luck with that.
I can't think of anything that Apple would want to give up less than that source code, even if it is two years and iterations old.

Macworld: Core i7 iMacs beat even 8 core Mac Pros
Woops. It looks like Apple might have made those new iMacs a little too fast!
Accroding to Macworld's tests, The Core i7 iMac beat the Octo-core Mac Pro 2.2GHz in a number of Speedmark tests and overall it was 1.5% faster than the fastest base model computer Apple sells. Sure, you can update that Mac pro Beast to 2.93GHz Octo, but that is $2600 more, $500 more than the entire Core i7 iMac!
Our tests of the built-to-order Core i7 iMac (which, other than the processor, has identical specifications as the stock Core i5 iMac) showed even greater performance prowess. Briefly: Firefox 3.6 enters 3rd beta, new Eye-Fi features
In Brief: Mozilla has already released a third beta of the upcoming Firefox 3.6 update, bringing a variety of bug fixes and security enhancements. Eye-Fi has updated its photo uploading utility with Selective Share, a new feature that allows users to selectively share only certain pictures on sites such as Flickr.

Mangrove WinMo tablet rough-handled, teased for being 'tubby'
Not too long ago C-motech popped up on our radar with Mangrove, the 7-inch touchscreen tablet that's been tragically saddled with Windows Mobile 6.5. The kids at SlashGear have just had a chance to play with the device, and to be honest they don't seem too terribly impressed. When stacked up against the Quanta Android Smartbook, for instance, the form factor was deemed unimpressive and "tubby," while the 1GHz Snapdragon seemed lackluster compared to the similarly powered HTC HD2. And it doesn't seem that the 800 x 480 resistive touchscreen has won many fans. But who knows? Maybe at the right price, this guy will find its (albeit small) audience. Or they

App Store API screening flawed, says developer
A new automatic screening technique Apple is using for the App Store appears to be backfiring, claims developer Rogue Sheep. The screening is believed to be aimed at catching unauthorized APIs, blocked under Apple's submission rules. A number of the apps trapped so far are allegedly ones using Three20, an Objective-C library. Rogue Sheep's Postage has in the past relied on some Three20 code, and so private API calls were removed from the software before submitting a recent update.

Microsoft fights claims of NSA backdoor in Win 7
Microsoft in a response late Thursday rejected assertions that it has put in a security "backdoor" at the request of the National Security Agency. The denial comes after the NSA's information assurance lead, Richard Schaeffer, told a US Senate terrorism subcommittee that the agency had worked with Microsoft to improve Windows 7's "security guide" and sparked fears that the government had deliberately left a secret window the NSA could use to spy on users.

Aqua Connect intros hosted Mac terminal services
Aqua Connect and Ashbourne Technology Group have announced a new partnership designed to provide hosted services on the Mac platform. The Aqua Connect Terminal Server previously had been unavailable as a hosted service, however the new offering will allow customers to take advantage of the Mac terminal services without purchasing a dedicated server.

Gameloft CEO: On Android nobody is making significant revenue
Bad news for those Android users who were hoping to get the same level of game access as exists on the iPhone. IT doesn't look like it is happening. Gameloft and companies like them have started to scale bck their Android investments, according to someone who should know, Gameloft finance director Alexandre de Rochefor:
"We have significantly cut our investment in Android platform, just like many others," Gameloft finance director Alexandre de Rochefort said at an investor conference. Rochefort said the company has cut back on investment mostly due to weaknesses of Android's application store. "It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone. Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android nobody is making significant revenue," Rochefort said. Games for iPhone generated 13 percent of Gameloft's revenue in the last quarter. "We are selling 400 times more games on iPhone than on Android," Rochefort said.

News: Wider distribution boosting iPhone sales in France

Nach längerer Zeit erscheint mal wieder ein Spiel aus dem Star Trek-Universum. Bei Star Trek D-A-C handelt es sich um einen actionlastigen Shooter, der auf dem letzten Star Trek-Film basiert. Avernum VI ist erschienen
Spiderweb Software hat nun den sechsten und letzten Teil der Avernum-Reihe veröffentlicht. Avernum VI wurde im Juni angekündigt (wir berichteten) und die Macintosh-Fassung ist nun erschienen. Eine Windows-Version folgt dann im Frühling 2010.

Verizon Droids already dropping in price. Dell sells for $120
You might be able to find a refurbished iPhone for $49 offbut only if if it is refurbished. Even chain discounter Walmart only takes $2 off the price of the iPhone and there are never sales. Apple simply doesn't discount it, ever.
Verizon/Motorola have taken a different approach. Merely a week after launch, the Droid handset has already lost $80 in value over at Dell who are selling it for $120 with plan. This follows news that the Palm Pre is selling for $79.99 at Amazon (Pixie is $24.99 - not even enough to qualify for free shipping).

TomTom to ship iPod touch-specific car kit
GPS maker TomTom has revealed a new car mount, one designed exclusively for the iPod touch. The accessory reflects a recent update to the company's GPS app, which now includes Touch support. The new kit is little different from its more broadly-compatible iPhone version, mainly being $20 cheaper at a price of $100.

Qualcomm demos FLO TV on iPhone
Qualcomm has quietly shown an example receiver that would give the iPhone and iPod touch FLO TV reception. Despite assertions that the company would use iPhone OS 3.0 support for native hardware, the demonstrator mimics the strategy used for the Softbank 1Seg tuner in Japan and pipes video over Wi-Fi. The receiver itself is roughly as large as the iPhone, though it's unclear whether this is due to its prototype nature or to accommodate a larger battery.

We've ridden our fair share of electric bikes and motorcycles, but we've yet to get our hands on one that's been hand assembled in Berlin/Biesenthal. Grace boasts a water-tight / ultra-light CNC-Aluminum frame, a 1300-watt motor, lithium-ion batteries, a 40 MPH top speed, a range of up to 31 miles, and a one-hour recharge time. YouTube blocking native video API from TV devices
YouTube drew controversy with word this week that it has begun limiting the use of its native video API on devices. Reflecting new terms of service, any device that connects to a TV must have a license from YouTube to get fully native video support. The move will ban smaller-scale devices like the Popcorn Hour C-200 from directly accessing YouTube videos, although it will still allow them access using Flash.

How-to: run Chrome OS as a virtual machine
Itching for some Chrome OS? Well, we all are, but you might be a bit disappointed at the fact that while Google has opened sourced its progress on the OS so far, the version that is currently available for download seem eons behind what Google showed just showed off at its event yesterday. Still, if you just have to see it for yourself, the good news is that it's a total breeze to get a virtual machine running. Confirmation of the excellent performance of Core i5 and Core i7 iMacs
Macworld has published a comprehensive test of the Core i5 and Core i7 iMacs. They confirms the results we have first shown, namely that these new Macs are very close in performance to the Mac Pro. The Core i7 can even be faster than the Quad and Octo-core Nehalem Mac Pro. Note, however, that in the detailed results, we suggest that this gain is largely due to accelerated disc transfer rate, associated with faster drives or a more efficient implementation of SATA II.

Intel loses another round against Europe
After being condemned to a record fine of 1.06 billion euros (£950M, $1.57B) by Europe, Intel announced two procedures. The first is a traditional call in which all business will be re-examined. The second aims to invalidate the first (and thus to make net result of the procedures zero). To this end, Intel had seized the European Mediator P. Nikiforos Diamandouros, deducing that points of the proceeding were disputed and restored the sentence in question. This latter has just returned its verdict: There were indeed points of contention in the procedure which were not perfect, but they do not call into question the final judgement. Intel is thus vindicated but the mediator benefitted from it as to have given recommendations to the civil servant who had carried out the first proceedings so that these errors are no longer made. Barnes & Noble sold out of Nook reader until 2010
Barnes & Noble today signaled that new orders for the Nook reader now won't ship at all in 2009. Those placed today will ship no sooner than January 4th, or more than three weeks after the delay to December 11th. The bookseller hopes to console those missing the Christmas target by giving them a certificate that promises a Nook reader when it ships.

China Unicom claims high expectations for iPhone
China Unicom has set high targets for iPhone sales in its native country, according to China Daily. One senior executive tells the newspaper that within two to three years, the iPhone is expected to represent 10 percent of all 3G devices in China. The carrier's chairman, Chang Xiaobing, has meanwhile suggested that the product will eventually become the nation's most popular smartphone.

Barnes & Noble's Nook now sold out for the holidays
Hoping to put your hands on a Nook this holiday season? Here's hoping you got in the door early, because bookseller Barnes & Noble claims that the Kindle-competitor has sold out for anyone hoping to gift the thing this year. According to the New York Times, B&N says pre-orders on the device have exceeded its expectations, and the well has now run dry on forthcoming stock. To make up for the loss, the seller is offering placeholder certificates for buyers, with a promise that the next round of devices will be shipping out around January 4th. Are suburban moms to blame? FLO TV for iPhone proof-of-concept caught in the wild
We don't know if watching TV on a 3.5-inch display is your bag, as it were, but it looks like Qualcomm is moving onward and upward with its plans for FLO TV on the iPhone. Not too many details at the moment, just some pics that Electricpig snapped of a handset running a proof-of-concept app that relys on an external device for reception, streaming re-runs of Mayberry R.F.D. to your handset via WiFi. No word yet on the when this device might actually go "prime time," but with any luck the five pocket TV enthusiasts out there may someday be freed from the tyranny of the FLO TV Person

Apple I system on auction through eBay
A resident of Roseville, California is auctioning off an original Apple I, according to the Detroit Free Press. The computer was the first put into production by Apple, launching in 1976 in a limited run of 200 units. It was distinctive at the time for being produced and sold by a two-man team -- Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs -- and building in its own terminal circuitry, requiring only a separate keyboard and TV set.

T-Mobile's US branch may land a deal with another carrier to grow its network much more rapidly, a rumor maintained on Friday. Sources for the German paper Handelsblatt claimed that Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile's parent, is in the "early stages" of looking for a partner that would help it build out the network through a cash infusion. The top candidates so far include budget carrier MetroPCS, WiMAX-based Clearwire and even AT&T, any of whom could get a small stake in T-Mobile in return for the investment.

Sony PS3 geht auf 3D im nächsten Jahr

Auf der diesjährigen IFA wurde bereits die PS3 mit 3D-Games gezeigt, im nächsten Jahr soll es dann endlich soweit sein und die hiesigen Wohnzimmer beglücken. Die dann erscheinenden Konsolen werden mit 3D-fähiger Hardware bestückt werden. Dass dazu ein passender Fernseher benötigt wird, ist natürlich obligatorisch. Eventuell kann Sony so zu den Konsolen noch ein paar TVs absetzen. Aber die Ära 3D scheint langsam aber sicher anzustehen. Interessant ist, was die Konkurrenz denn in dem Segment präsentieren wird.

Early details of Intel's 2011 Atom surface
Initial information has surfaced of Intel's sequel to its imminent Pine Trail platform for the Atom processor. Appropriately codenamed Cedar Trail, the 2011 update should be the first built on a 32 nanometer process and will take advantage of this through a new integrated graphics core. The new version will support DirectX 10-level 3D as well as HD video decoding. It should additionally bring dual digital outputs that recognize DisplayPort and HDMI as well as older formats.

A workaround has been developed to restore Atom processor support in Mac OS X 10.6.2, a Russian hacker claims. The technique relies on a custom version of the Mach kernel, which must be installed using Terminal because of the need to gain root access. We've seen it out and about, but at last we got a chance to actually play with Sony Ericsson's tribute to impractical style: the Pureness. As it turns out, using the device is just about as pointless as it seems. You can always just barely make out what's happening on the semi-translucent monochrome screen, and we found ourselves constantly shifting our angle and backdrop to improve readability. The capabilities of the phone should come as no surprise to anyone who's used a Sony Ericsson Java-happy dumbphone in the past, and the handset also has that wild variety of face buttons that are typical on a SE handset. California mandates TV energy efficiency improvements by 2011
That new HDTV of yours? It may be thin and light and lovely, but it ain't saving you any money. The state of California knows this and has created new energy efficiency standards applying to any sets sold after January of 2011. The initial regs state a maximum of 1 watt of consumption when "off" and, when on, a maximum of .2 watts per inch of screen area plus an arbitrary 32 watts. Two years later, in 2013, things get even tougher, that formula dropping to .12 per inch with a 25 watt base modifier. Wie eBay bekannt gegeben hat, konnte man den zugekauften Internet-Telefonie-Dienst Skype nach einigen Konflikten nun doch wieder verkaufen. Studie: Grafikkartenabsatz legt im dritten Quartal zu
Die Verkaufszahlen von Grafikkarten haben im dritten Quartal stark zugelegt. Das geht aus Zahlen der Marktforscher von Jon Peddie Research (JPR) hervor. Zwischen Juli und September wurden demnach 20,3 Millionen Grafikkarten verkauft, was einem Plus von 21 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorquartal entspricht. BlackBerry Pearl 9100 revealed, has lost its gemstone but not its luster
The BlackBerry Pearl 8100 was, and still is, a lovely little phone, QUERTYfied, pocketable, and rocking that little milky trackball that gave it its name. There's finally a true successor coming down the pipeline (the flippy 8230 not really counting) though it ditches the iconic pearl for a now-standard (and hopefully more reliable) touchpad. Atom support now enabled by a hack in 10.6.2
Yep, we knew this would happen. Apple, for whatever reason (they didn't test it and don't care or they are trying to prevent Hackintosh) killed support for Atom in their latest 10.6.2 build.
All of you cheap bastard Hackintoshers can rest easy though. A Russian hacker was able to slap an old Atom-supporting OSX Kernel on the newer Mac OS 10.6.2 build and get it running on his little Atom netbook. Depending on how much Apple cares, we'll probably see this shut down in 10.6.3. Rinse. Repeat.

Jobs tells developer to chill
Short Version: Apple's lawyers contacted the little App factory to change the name of its iPodRip product that pulls music and video off of CDs and DVDS. Because it has 'iPod' in its name, it is a violation of an Apple trademark. iPodRip's developer wrote a diatribe to Steve Jobs on why this was unfair.

Im Beiprogramm zur Vorstellung der neuesten iMac-Generation hat Apple auch eine neue Version der IR-Fernbedienung Apple Remote angekündigt. Inzwischen wird der für 19 Euro erhältliche Alu-Riegel ausgeliefert, Anlass für uns eine kurze Einschätzung sowie einen Größenvergleich nachzuliefern.
Die Apple Remote ist kompatibel mit allen nach 2005 eingeführten Apple-Produkten mit Infrarot-Empfänger, also den meisten aktuellen Macs (Ausnahme: das neue MacBook), Apple TV oder dem iPod Universal Dock. Zum gleichen Preis wie ihr Plastikvorgänger kommt die neue Version nun deutlich wertiger daher und liegt dank der länglichen Form auch wesentlich besser, dazu noch federleicht in der Hand. Windows 7 verkauft sich doppelt so gut wie alle Vorgänger im ersten Monat. Und damit sind nicht nur einzeln verkaufte Kopien gemeint, sondern auch die Zahlen der vorinstallierten Versionen. NASA entwickelt Chemikalien-Sensor fürs iPhone
Das iPhone gewinnt nicht nur als Kommunikations- und Unterhaltungsgerät für Endanwender und Wirtschaftsunternehmen immer mehr an Bedeutung. Auch in der Wissenschaft werden ständig Einsatzmöglichkeiten des Geräts für verschiedenste Bereiche ausgearbeitet. Die NASA beispielsweise arbeitet an einem Sensor nebst zugehöriger App, um den Gehalt von Chemikalien in der Umgebungsluft zu bestimmen.
Der Sensor ist in etwa so groß wie eine Briefmarke und wird in den Dock-Connector des iPhones gesteckt. Wie das mit dem momentanen Prototyp aussieht, zeigen Fotos auf den NASA-Internetseiten. Durch den Sensor können Chemikalien wie Ammoniak, Chlorgas und Methan in der Luft aufgespürt werden. Die Messergebnisse können im Anschluss über das Mobilfunknetz oder via WLAN einem Zentralrechner zur Verfügung gestellt werden.

Vor knapp einem Jahr brachte Electronic Arts mit der Monopoly World Edition eines der ersten namhaften Spiele auf das iPhone und den iPod touch. Jetzt ist auch die Originalfassung von Monopoly (2,39 Euro) im App Store erhältlich. Archos 9 pre-orders reportedly delayed until December, retail release pushed to 2010
Well, we just caught sight of it in all its dissected glory courtesy of the FCC last week, but it looks like the Archos 9 tablet / media player may not be quite so close to a release after all. According to UMPC Portal, Archos now says that the initial batch of pre-orders won't start shipping until "early December" -- well past the already-missed October 22nd launch date -- while the retail release has been pushed back all the way until sometime in the first quarter of 2010. Jobs tells developer to chill
Short Version: Apple's lawyers contacted the little App factory to change the name of its iPodRip product that pulls music and video off of CDs and DVDS. Because it has 'iPod' in its name, it is a violation of an Apple trademark. iPodRip's developer wrote a diatribe to Steve Jobs on why this was unfair.

Tempted by 10 Gbits/s Ethernet?
If for some users, gigabit Ethernet with its potential data transfer speed of 100 MB/s is not enough, especially if you are using large RAID volume or SSD, it becomes quickly a bottleneck. You can of course use optical fiber, but another solution might be available soon. In Japan, one can now find PCI Express card supporting 10 Gbits/s Ethernet on a PCI Express 8x slot.

Atom support now enabled by a hack in 10.6.2
Yep, we knew this would happen. Apple, for whatever reason (they didn't test it and don't care or they are trying to prevent Hackintosh) killed support for Atom in their latest 10.6.2 build.
All of you cheap bastard Hackintoshers can rest easy though. A Russian hacker was able to slap an old Atom-supporting OSX Kernel on the newer Mac OS 10.6.2 build and get it running on his little Atom netbook. Depending on how much Apple cares, we'll probably see this shut down in 10.6.3. Rinse. Repeat.

Big Fish Games has released Drawn: The Painted Tower, a new puzzle-adventure game for the Mac. Players must travel through painted worlds and unravel the secrets of the Painted Tower in order to rescue a girl named Iris. Each floor of the tower has been locked by a curse, which requires players to solve a series of puzzles in order to unlock. Players will also meet a variety of different characters throughout the game, some of which will help the players succeed while others will try and stop them.

Star Trek D-A-C arriving for Mac in December
Paramount and TransGaming have announced a December release for a Mac version of Star Trek: D-A-C. The new game is a top-down space shooter game pitting Starfleet against the Romulan Empire, supporting online multiplayer for up to 12 players, online co-op and single-player gameplay. Gameplay options include survival, team deathwatch, conquest and assault. Defeated ships offer new abilities and score pick-ups in survival mode, while conquest and assault gameplay involve attacking or defending sectors of space.

Sony's Blu-ray digital copies tested on PS3, PSP
We've seen digital copies of Blu-ray via separate DVDs before (e.g. Watchmen), and just recently Sony finally cut out of the middle disc and put the transferable video on the high-def disc itself. Joystiq recently showcased how it's done using a copy of Godzilla and a PlayStation 3. For this you'll need a PSN account and the 12-digit code included in the disc case. The standard definition video, here clocking in at 2GB, will copy to the hard drive (not a separate download, thankfully), and then if you want to the PSP. Christian Kienle has introduced Ebbinghaus 3.0, the latest version of the flash card application for organizing cards into decks, folders or "smart decks." All cards will be displayed within a table, while a progress indicator shows overall performance. Mac OS X 10.6.2 hacked to allow Atom support
No bonus points for calling this one, but it looks like Atom support has returned to Mac OS X 10.6.2 -- less than two weeks after it was unceremoniously removed to the dismay of hackintoshers. Of course, this new "fix" doesn't come courtesy of Apple, and it does take the art of hackintoshing to some risky new levels. Developed by a member of the InsanelyMac forurm, the hack is actually a full-on replacement kernel for OS X, which means it will require a good bit of fine tuning to get installed, and some considerable faith in the developer on your part. Ringce has announced the final release of Slammer, a layout and geometry utility for Mac OS X. Designed for both graphic designers and app developers, the layout tool can be used for creating blueprints, customizing borders and size presets, or saving and exporting templates. Version 1.0 includes improvements to the Unibody theme and introduces customizable themes, enabling users to alter the six built-in themes or create new ones. Microsoft CEO Ballmer says Windows 7 sales are double its predecessors'
Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer was on hand for the company's annual shareholder's meeting in Washington, and news of Windows 7 sales came up right away. While delivering the opening remarks, Ballmer said that Microsoft has sold twice as many copies of Win 7 as any previous OS in a comparable time frame. Researchers say RFID 'fingerprint' could prevent counterfeiting
While it hasn't exactly been a detriment to their widespread adoption, RFID tags have proven to be relatively easy to exploit in a number of cases. Some researchers at the University of Arkansas say they've now found a novel way to change that, however, with a new method that effectively amounts to a "fingerprint" for RFID tags. This writer is on record saying that gaming is the real killer app for 3D, and while we wait for 3D movies to find a home distribution method and start throwing some weight around, that continues ring true. Luckily, the ASUS G51J 3D doesn't skimp on the graphics power, despite its almost-pretty-portable 15.6-inch size. We checked out Left 4 Dead 2 in 3D on the machine, using the included NVIDIA 3D setup, and were pretty impressed by the gaming graphics and what 3D adds the experience. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ist nun seit einigen Tagen auf dem Markt und konnte einen sehr guten Start auf ähnlichem Rekord-Niveau wie GTA IV hinlegen. Apple uses Infineon 3G chips to dodge Qualcomm royalties
Apple has allegedly established a system to minimize licensing costs for 3G components patented by Qualcomm, according to Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi. While most 3G OEMs are paying Qualcomm roughly 4 percent on the wholesale price of their phones, Apple reportedly dodges most of the fees and pays an estimated 1.6 percent of its iPhone revenue to the chip maker.

American Airlines launches online widget to sniff out WiFi-equipped flights
You may bang on the legacy airlines, but American Airlines has a good thing going here with Gogo. The outfit has just completed installation of in-flight WiFi on 150 of its MD-80 aircraft, and in order to give you a better idea of how to prepare, it's now launching an online widget that'll let you know if your bird will enable web surfing when you get on. The tool is completely web-based, so any PC or smartphone can access it; the only real knock is that it only informs you of a "yes" or "no" 24 hours prior to departure, so it's still impossible to book a flight 3 months out and know for certain if you'll be able to hop online. Twitter turns on geolocation
Twitter today added its promised geolocation feature for tweets. The addition gives any app using the API, but not the Twitter site itself, the option of tagging posts with a location as well as to automatically draw on the location for position-based features, such as finding tweets in a certain area. It isn't exclusive to GPS-equipped devices and will work with Wi-Fi and other methods that can generate the relevant data.
