Dell misses targets, sees income plunge 54%
Dell today posted disappointing results for its latest quarter ended in October. The company saw its year-over-year revenue drop 15 percent to about $12.9 billion and its net income drop even further, falling 54 percent to $337 million. Both decreases were blamed on poor results both in the public sector and in its staple home PC business, where its shipments were up about 17 percent compared to a year earlier but its revenue was down 10 percent, an indication that many buyers were opting for less expensive PCs.

Dell lets loose Studio 17 laptop with multitouch display

Mac Tablet: Only for H2 2010!?
The rumor was indicating that Apple would release a famous Mac Tablet early 2010. According to Digitimes, it could well be postponed till H2 2010 (meaning its availability, not necessarily its announcement). The reason seems to be linked to recent decision from Apple to change some components. n fact 2 models could be unveiled, one with a 9.7" OLED display manufactured by LG (it should remind you the partnership signed between both companies earlier this year), while the second model will feature a larger 10.6" display but based on a classical LCD panel.
Beside the size of the display, the difference will be the price. The 10.6" unit should be around 800 to 1,000 USD, while the OLED 9.7" model, considering that the panel itself costs 500 USD, should be priced around 1,200 to 1,500 USD. For such price for a tablet, it better delivers great p

Ballmer: it "matters" that Apple has gained share
Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer today warned at a yearly shareholders' meeting that the company needed to improve the standing of Windows in the future. The executive was emphatic that Microsoft was still in a comfortable position with "96 out of 100" choosing Windows worldwide but acknowledged that Apple had cut into Microsoft's share in the past year. He downplayed the amount, labeling it a "a couple of tenths of a percent" but added that even the claimed amount was significant and worth fighting for.

Apple exec's avant-garde backyard's an eye-teaser
This looks like a nice avant-garde backyard for an Apple exec. Fortunately, that's just what it is - it belongs to Apple executive (Mobile Mac Systems), art collector Jeff Dauber, and was built for him by Berkeley-based architect Thom Faulders. Sony to expand PlayStation Network into Sony Online Service, sell music, books, videos
Sony had a big management meeting in Japan today, where the tech giant announced some extremely vague plans for what's initially being called the Sony Online Service -- an new "iTunes-like" service built on the PlayStation Network that will sell books, music, and movies. Editorial: Chrome OS is what I want, but not what I need
There's obviously something seriously wrong with me, since the idea of a feature-stripped OS that over-relies on a web browser at the expense of more powerful single-purpose apps has delightful shivers running up my spine. In fact, in a fleeting moment of ill-advised adulation, I was considering buying a netbook with solid state storage so that I'd be all prepped to hack this pre-release version of Chrome OS onto it and web-app to my heart's content. The real issue is that at the end of the day I know I'm always (well, for the next few years at least) going to be too reliant on "heavyweight" desktop applications like audio, video and image editors to really cut the cord and stuff my whole

Apple retail workers to get new iPod touch apps?
Apple Store workers will soon have more apps for their iPod touch-based EasyPay handhelds, a source claims. The devices are currently meant to run Easy Touch, an app which handles roaming checkouts in tandem with an attached card reader and barcode scanner. Firefox headed to the PS3? Can life get any better?
Playstation Insider's got a tipster (one that's reportedly "very close" to the company) telling them that Sony is in heavy talks with Mozilla to port Firefox to the PS3. The tipster didn't know if any actual deal had been struck, but it's not terribly surprising considering the PS3's current built-in browser is less than awesome. Paragon NTFS – Kurze gratis Aktion
Wer schon mal versucht hatte auf seine Bootcamp Partition etwas zu kopieren, musste feststellen das man nur Lesezugriff hat. Virgin Mobile Canada to sell iPhone 3G, 3GS

Die CPU scheint ein mit 256 MB RAM und einer PowerVR Grafik ausgestatteter Cortex A8 zu sein. Da ist es dann auch keine Überraschung, dass das Gerät HD kann, will sagen 720p Video aufnehmen und abspielen. Ausserdem soll das Symbian S60 Interface rasend schnell sein. Jobs: Forced name change 'not that big of a deal'
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has chastised a Mac developer in response to a letter regarding a name change, reports say. The CEO of Little App Factory, John Devor, says he was recently served a notice by Apple lawfirm Baker & McKenzie, asking him to change the name of iPodRip, a program used to transfer content from an iPod or iPhone back to a Mac. Devor decided to plead his case with Jobs directly, writing an elaborate e-mail message.

Intel's first 32nm mobile Celeron due in spring?
Intel's first Celeron processor based on its 32 nanometer Arrandale design should ship this spring, a leak says today. The P4500 will clock in at just 1.86GHz but should be a dual-core example and have 2MB of Level 2 cache and perform faster than an older 45nm Celeron. Both Hyperthreading and Turbo Boost will reportedly be disabled, as with the Core i3, to keep the price down and differentiate from faster Core i5 and i7 models.

Das Deutsche Institut für Service-Qualität DISQ hat den Service von zehn Handyhersteller getestet. Von 270 Kontakten wurden Apple, Asus, HTC, LG, Motorola, Nokia, RIM (BlackBerry), Sagem, Samsung und Sony Ericsson überprüft. Dabei wurde die telefonische Kontaktqualität sowie die Qualität der Antwort auf E-Mail-Anfragen ermittelt. Außerdem hat das Institut die Internetseiten der Anbieter unter die Lupe genommen. Germany's Sharkoon is coming out with a USB 3.0 hard drive dock that allows users to plug in any IDE or SATA hard drives and transfer data through a fast USB 3.0 connection. BenQ bringing nReader e-book reader to Asia
We're still not quite sure this mad rush to produce e-book readers will result in anything but tears and heartbreak, but that isn't stopping BenQ from joining in: it's just announced the nReader, which will hit Taiwan in January along with an online bookstore, followed by Japan and China. The hardware itself is pretty standard fare, with a six-inch touchscreen electronic ink display, 2GB of memory, and ePub / HTML / PDF support, so we'll see if this thing manages to move 300,000 units next year like BenQ says it will -- that seems fairly optimistic to us, but it's just a drop in the bucket according to BenQ, which says that over 100 million e-readers will sold in ten years. Imation this morning made further inroads into hard drives by shipping two new designs. The Imation Pro WX gives both Macs and PCs their first Wireless USB external hard drive and transfers data at a usable 15MB per second over the air. Trillian für iPhone: Veröffentlicht nach drei Monaten Review-Prozess
Nach knapp drei Monaten warten hat der Multimessenger Trillian für iPhone die Zulassung für den App Store bekommen. Die Entwickler von Cerulan Studios hatten ihre erste und bisher einzige App Trillian im August für den App Store eingereicht, seitdem aber weder Ablehnung noch die Zulassung bekommen.

NetApp erwartet nach Gewinnsteigerung Rekordquartal
NetApp hat sein zweites Finanzquartal 2010 (bis 30. Oktober 2009) mit einem GAAP-Nettogewinn von 96 Millionen Dollar oder 0,27 Dollar je Aktie beendet. HP schenkt der Welt ein zentrales Nervensystem

Wir lieben ambitionierte Projekte. HP will der Erde ein Zentrales Nervensystem (CeNSE) verpassen um ihr besser zuhören zu können. Eine Trillionen dieser Sensoren möchte HP quer über die Erde verteilen um Daten zu sammeln, die Google Streetview wie einen Witz aussehen lassen, die Vorraussetzung dafür ist allerdings ein minimaler Preis. Der erste Prototyp für einen Accelerometer ist schon fertig, mit der Besonderheit, dass er ca. 1000 Mal empfindlicher ist als alles was in iPhones oder Wiis steckt. Sensoren für Temperatur, Luftdruck, Windbewegung, Feuchtigkeit und ähnliches sind in Arbeit. Die Golden Gate Brücke z.B. sollte mit ca. 10.000 Sensoren gut ausgestattet sein. Wir sind gespannt.

Apple tablets pushed to 2H 2010, to get OLED model?
Apple may have delayed the launch of its repeatedly rumored tablet line to incorporate newer parts that could include an OLED touchscreen, a purported leak claims today. While an often mentioned 10.6-inch version with an LCD is still deemed on tap, the entire line may have been moved to the second half of 2010 to accommodate a 9.7-inch OLED from LG Display. The company may be delaying the launch to wait for OLED prices to fall, as a panel costs $500 today where Apple could save $200 to $300 just by waiting several months.

DigiTimes versorgt uns mit neuen Gerüchten ums Apple-Tablet: das Wundergerät soll nicht in der ersten, sondern erst in der zweiten Jahreshälfte 2010 rauskommen. Der Grund: es sollen zwei Tablets mit unterschiedlichen Bildschirmen werden - eine 9,7-Zoll grosse OLED- und eine 10,6-Zoll grosse LCD TFT-Version. Ausserdem wird erwartet, dass die Preise für OLED-Panel sinken, was ebenfalls zu Apples neuem Zeitplan geführt haben könnte. TomTom-Update bringt iPod touch-Unterstützung
Mit dem gestern erschienenen Update auf Version 1.2 werden die TomTom-Navigationspakete für Westeuropa (99,99 Euro) und D-A-CH(69,99 Euro) iPod touch-kompatibel. Die Software lässt sich jetzt auf dem iPod touch installieren und starten, Voraussetzung für die Benutzung ist laut Produktbeschreibung allerdings ein externer GPS-Empfänger oder ein TomTom Car Kit.
Nachdem das bei TomTom bereits erhältliche Car Kit fürs iPhone das Zusammenspiel mit dem Touch konsequent verweigert - der iPod erhält nicht einmal Ladestrom, zudem ist die Halterung deutlich zu groß - rechnen wir damit, dass TomTom e

Wir kümmern uns hier zwar nicht sonderlich um Software, aber wenn so ein Gigant wie Microsoft Office 2010 in die Betaphase geht, können wir euch das nicht verheimlichen. Bloomberg berichtet über angebliche Verhandlungen zwischen dem Chiphersteller Qualcomm und Apple. Dabei soll es um einen Chipsatz gehen, der Unterstützung für weitere Mobilfunkstandards bringt und damit das iPhone auch für weitere Carrier in den USA interessant machen dürfte.

launchd mit Hinweis auf Mac OS X 10.7
Ein Fehlerbericht von launchd nennt erstmals eine Mac-OS-X-Version mit einer Buildnummer beginnend mit einer elf: «11A47». Bisherige Mac-OS-X-Versionen trugen jeweils bei einem Major-Update eine neue beginnende Ziffer: Tiger war z.B. «8A…», Leopard «9A…» und Snow Leopard «10A…». Mit «11A47» wird demnach die Nachfolgeversion von Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, also Mac OS X 10.7 oder (aber wohl eher unwahrscheinlicher) Mac OS 11 angeschrieben. Microsoft darf chinesisches Windows XP nicht mehr verkaufen
Weil das Softwareunternehmen Microsoft ein Produkt eines chinesischen Softwareunternehmens in mehreren chinesischen Windows-Versionen unrechtmäßig genutzt haben soll, hat ein Gericht in Peking den Verkauf dieser Windows-Versionen untersagt. Camino 2.0 mit Tab-Vorschau und Growl-Nachrichten
Nach einer recht langen Entwicklungszeit ist nun der auf Firefox basierende Web-Browser Camino in Version 2.0 erschienen. Im Gegensatz zu Firefox ist Camino ganz auf den Einsatz mit Mac OS X hin optimiert und bietet eine dementsprechend angepasste Benutzeroberfläche. Apples Tablet kommt angeblich mit OLED-Display

Apple is in early development of the next major version of Mac OS X, evidence suggests. The information comes by way of the open-source launchd framework, which is used to boot Mac OS X and manage its processes. Wireless Dynamics unveils near-field/RFID reader for iPhone
Short-range wireless device maker Wireless Dynamics today introduced its iCarte 110, which is the first device to bring two-way near-field communications (NFC) and RFID to the iPhone and iPod touch. The iCarte can transfer info and make contactless payments by containing an embedded smart chip which can act as a debit, credit, pre-paid or loyalty card, turning the iPhone into an electronic wallet.

Nokia to drop Symbian on Nseries by 2012?
Nokia will abandon Symbian for all its Nseries services by 2012, the company said at a launch event for the N900. The Maemo-based smartphone is the only one of its type in Nokia's lineup so far, but the company plans to gradually phase out Symbian S60 on all its Nseries devices over time. It should eventually end in relatively mainstream devices and not just high-end flagships like the N900, which itself is considered a "bridge" between the old and new worlds.

Canalys: iPhone may become UK's best-selling smartphone
The iPhone could soon become the UK's most popular smartphone, claims a Canalys analyst. Presenting at yesterday's Canalys Mobility Forum event in London, Pete Cunningham observed that the iPhone was the most popular smartphone in France during Q3 2009, a result of the end of an exclusive deal between Apple and regional carrier Orange. The French government ruled that the deal violated competition regulations.

Microsoft vows GPU acceleration, standards in IE9
Microsoft on the second day of its Professional Developers Conference by providing an early look at Internet Explorer 9. The new browser is just three weeks into development but is already expected to significantly outperform its predecessor. The new version will take advantage of hardware acceleration from graphics chipsets that support D2D in DirectX to offload many of the visual elements of browsing, such as maps or sub-pixel rendering. Microsoft's aim is to let the hardware "shine through" in the browser, chief software architect Steven Sinofsky said.

Urban Design has released Qu-s 1.5, an update to its desktop organizational utility. A notes system lets users save links, schedule tasks and create lists which can include checkboxes or graphic pointers. Hulu adds music videos, more
Video on demand service Hulu, which offers the majority of its content for free to US viewers, is adding a dedicated music video section to its site on Wednesday. Together with music label EMI, the first artist's videos will be singer Norah Jones, before more artists' work is featured over time. All of Jones' videos will be on the site, as will footage of four concerts and several of her interviews.

Marware has launched three new iPod-based cases, the SportShell Convertible carrying solution for the iPod nano 5G and the EcoSleeve for the iPod nano 5G, alongside the MicroShell for iPod touch 2G. Qualcomm pushing for iPhone chip deal
Qualcomm chief Paul Jacobs in an interview today said his company has been talking with Apple about providing chips for the iPhone. He didn't provide specifics but tried to downplay the significance for Bloomberg, explaining that Qualcomm's size means it talks to "everybody." He also pointed out that company "haven't made [a deal] yet" with Apple and didn't say what progress if any had been achieved.

Google Android device to go data-only?
Google's frequently rumored self-branded Android phone could skirt around its partners' worries by using only Internet service if a source is true. The still unknown device would primarily be intended for data and would use VoIP for its calls. At least AT&T has expressed interest in supplying the network for the phone and could let customers pay as little as $20 per month for access, although TechCrunch understands that "conditions" may be involved at that price.

Analyst calls for up to 2.9 million Macs in Dec. quarter
Apple is likely to sell between 2.8 and 2.9 million Macs in the December quarter, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. The forecast is based on October sales data from the NPD Group, which indicates that the month's Macs were up 7 percent year-over-year. Should Apple meet expectations, overall growth for the December period should be 14 percent.

Flip camcorders getting Wi-Fi early next year?
Flip will reportedly release a new USB camcorder with built-in Wi-Fi functionality early next year, thanks to Cisco, which bought Flip maker Pure Digital earlier this year. While this is not official, it should allow the ultraportable camcorder to upload videos directly to video-hosting sites over private and public Wi-Fi networks. The new Flip will purportedly also have a large screen that would slide out of the way to grant access to the record and menu buttons.

Qualcomm vows color, video-ready e-readers in 2010
Qualcomm today showed off a new implementation of its mirasol technology that could lead to a major advancement in e-book readers. The semiconductor designer has developed an early mockup of an e-book reader that has a 5.7-inch, 1024x768 color e-paper display. While not fully functional, it represents a design that should not only be capable of supporting richer colors than any other reader but also playing video.

Enhance Technology has launched the EnhanceRAID TS800 series, a new desktop RAID line. The series includes four main models based on connection options: IP (iSCSI), SC (SCSI), SS (SAS) and FC (Fiber Channel). Silverlight 4 beta adds support for webcams, Chrome
Microsoft on Wednesday released an early beta version of the upcoming Silverlight software. Version 4 adds a variety of new features including the ability to integrate HTML content within applications, while Google's Chrome browser will also be supported. The company claims performance optimizations allow apps to start quicker and run up to twice as fast as they would with Silverlight 3.

Microsoft teases Win Mobile 7 in Office Mobile 2010 preview
Microsoft today inadvertently previewed its next mobile OS through a preview of Office Mobile 2010. Point 5 in a description of the beta shows a screenshot of the productivity suite running in an environment clearly unrelated to Windows Mobile 6.5 and which is consistent with earlier shots that point to a more touchscreen-friendly interface. At the same time, it retains the familiar two-button options at the bottom of the screen and generates touch lists not unlike the current platform.

Conde preps Wired for Apple tablet without Apple help
Magazine publisher Condé Nast today revealed that it's taking the unusual step of optimizing its publications with Apple's rumored tablet in mind. The agency doesn't claim to MediaMemo that it's privy to Apple's design but expects Wired, and later its 17 other magazines, to be ready in a format that works with the device by mid-2010. It will allow both actual-size and optimized formats and should include both mixed media and hooks for social networking.

Dell debuts new P-, V-series all-in-one inkjet printers
Dell on Wednesday introduced six new inkjet all-in-one printers geared for home and business use. All of the models feature print speeds of up to 33 pages per minute in monochrome or 25 pages per minute in color. Monochrome copy speeds are claimed to reach 25 pages per minute, with color copies processed as fast as 21 pages per minute. All "w" variants feature integrated wireless connectivity, while an optional Bluetooth dongle can be connected to the USB Pictbridge port.

The Camino Project has released an update to its self-titled browser for Mac OS X. Version 2.0 adds a tab overview feature that allows users to quickly browse all open tabs in a layout preview. AT&T denied injunction against Verizon ads
Judge Timothy Batten Sr. dealt an early setback to AT&T's lawsuit against Verizon over allegedly misleading ads by refusing to grant a requested injunction that would have forced Verizon to take the ads down immediately. The US District Court ruled that the TV spots might be misunderstood but weren't harmfully deceptive, thus leaving no urgent need to change or withdraw the ads ahead of court proceedings. AT&T will have a second chance to persuade Judge Batten at one more hearing on December 16th.

Adobe has announced several release candidates for updates to its RAW and DNG file utilities, Photoshop Camera Raw 5.6, Lightroom 2.6 and DNG Converter 5.6. AT&T strikes back at Verizon with new 3G commercials
AT&T has fired back at Verizon's "there's a map for that" commercials by launching its own critical ad. The carrier hired film actor Luke Wilson, who guides viewers through a chart comparing several aspects of the 3G networks. Wilson credits AT&T with having the fastest network, the ability to simultaneously use voice and Internet, the most popular smartphones and access to over 100,000 apps.

TomTom 1.2 funktioniert auf iPhone 2G und iPod touch
TomTom hat ein Update für seine iPhone-Navigationssoftware veröffentlicht. AT&T suffers setback in court case but fires back at Verizon in an ad
Well, you knew this was coming. First news is that the Judge denied AT&T's request to remove Verizon's ads from the airwaves. No big shocker there. AT&T didn't even disagree with the maps that Verizon was showing. But AT&T have vowed that they're going to keep fighting. Good luck with that.
Secondly, they've made their own ads with (a slightly pudgey?) Luke Wilson and a bunch of X's. It isn't quite the Misfit Toys level of cheekieness but it is certainly a start. They've also put up a website at http://www.truthabout3G.com full of fun facts.
We've got over a month until Christmas and we don't think the mud will stop slinging any time soon.

TomTom does what we thought they'd do: Support iPod
Forget the naysayers. We knew TomTom would support the iPod touch and today's software update confirms it. With Google's Free Navigator scaring all of the GPS software makers, it doesn't hurt their bottom line to avail the $100 TomTom to work on 20 million more devices. Oh, but you'll also need the $100 car kit for this to work with the iPod (or the original iPhone), which doesn't have its own GPS.

Latest word out of Cisco is that they haven't yet ceded the ultra portable video camera throne to Apple's iPod Nano. In fact, they have a Wifi update planned for the Flip line. The new Flips will be able to upload videos to (assuming here) Youtube and Facebook type sites for immediate sharing with friends and family. Still pictures should also be uploadable as well. Pocket-Lint is also saying it won't have a touch screen viewfinder and it should be an early 2010 release.

A new line added to the Open Source instruction "launchd" seems to indicate that Apple is already actively working on Mac OS X 10.7.

In the code 11A47, 11 indicates a major revision of Mac OS X, as all builds from Snow Leopard were tagged 10AXXX. On a technical point of view, this is of course not surprising, indeed, Apple never really stop working on its OS and their evolution. Some teams were already working on 10.6.1 whereas 10.6 was not even out. Of course, we would be curious to know what would be the name chosen for this new version, the new associated features and corresponding improvements. This is particularly true for the latest point, as we are still looking at the true benefit brought by Snow Leopard, beside paving the way for the future OS.

Juicy Couture makes decent looking photo frame, Dean Koontz writes pretty good novel
We have to hand it to Juicy Couture -- a company which we would have thought could never, ever crank out anything that made us think, "hey, that's pretty nice!" Regardless, here it is in the flesh: Juicy Couture's own take on the digital photo frame, and not a glitter or spangle in sight. In fact, we're really digging the gaudy, old-timey gold resin frame, which measures 6.5 by 8-inches, and boasts a 2GB SD card (though the hideous logo remains hideous). It's up for pre-order for now, and should ship by the end of November -- if you don't mind paying $140 for it.

Good old T-Mobile's on a roll these days with new phone plans, and this one seems perfectly catered to stocking stuffers. Lenovo's ThinkPad X100e gets detailed: AMD Neo-based, not a netbook
We've already gotten a few brief, mysterious glimpses of Lenovo's thin-and-light ThinkPad X100e (sometimes known as the X200e), but it looks like things are now starting to get a bit more real. Contrary to previous speculation, this one's not, it seems, a ThinkPad netbook, but an "entry ultraportable," which apparently means that it is small, thin and light just like a netbook, and has a "netbook-like price point" -- it's just not a netbook. Samsung Bada phone to be announced first half of next year
We're still not entirely sure why Samsung feels the need to launch its own mobile operating system while still cranking out Android and Windows Mobile devices, but it seems like things are going full steam ahead: a spokesperson told CNET Asia today that a Bada phone would arrive in the first half of 2010. Sure, that sounds like a long time off, but really it's just six months after the big Bada SDK reveal in December, so we'll have to see if that's enough time for developers to sort things out and release any apps.

Latest SixthSense demo features paper 'laptop,' camera gestures
We've already seen MIT researcher Pranav Mistry's SixthSense projector-based augmented-reality system in some cool demos, but he just gave a TED talk and his latest ideas are the wildest yet. Forget simple projections, he's moved on to taking photos by just making a box with your fingers, identifying books and products on store shelves and projecting reviews and other information on them, projecting flight schedules on boarding passes, and even a new paper "laptop" concept that works by using a microphone on the paper to sense when you're touching it. AT&T 'hits' back at Verizon's Map for That campaign with an 'ad' of its own
Boy, AT&T sure isn't taking Verizon's Map for That campaign too well. After losing a request for an injunction (for now), the company seems to have decided that the only thing to do in the short term is to start advertising right back at Verizon. Unfortunately, it looks like AT&T threw this one together in a hurry, grabbing a bucket of magnets and a board and sticking them into some abandoned warehouse with Luke Wilson and some Apple-ad-style music. Are Mac Still the Most Reliable Computers?
Results of a recent study carried out among 30,000 people having a notebook computer from different manufacturers indicates that Mac might not be the most reliable computer anymore.
Indeed, Apple ranks 4th, behind ASUS, Toshiba and Sony the the 2 and 3 years reliability factor, with an average failure rate at 3 years of 17.4%. this is not really surprising, and if one look carefully, one can see that figures for the first 5 manufacturers are really close to each other. In addition, most of those computers are built with identical components (CPU, capacitors, GPU, display, etc.) sometimes on the same assembling lines. Per eMail macht uns Jan-Willem Jekel, der Entwickler von Blower, auf den von ihm programmierten AppStore-Download aufmerksam. Blower (AppStore-Link) generiert einen hochfrequenten Ton der (die entsprechende Geräte-Lautstärke vorausgesetzt) die iPhone-Speaker so beansprucht, dass der Schalldruckpegel sogar für das Ausblasen von Kerzen herhalten kann. Die bislang von uns präferierte Lösung zum einfachen Photo-Import der mit dem iPhone geschossenen Aufnahmen, Wi-Pix, funktioniert bereits seit Wochen nicht mehr - das versprochene Update lässt nach wie vor auf sich warten, im AppStore ist die Applikation momentan nicht verfügbar.
