Qualcomm shows off Snapdragon-powered Lenovo smartbook for AT&T
It may still have a few lingering problems with the "smartbook" name, but it looks like Qualcomm is pushing ahead with the still-nascent product category nonetheless, with CEO Paul Jacobs taking advantage of a recent investor get-together in New York to show off a new Lenovo-built smartbook that will apparently be offered by AT&T. Unfortunately, neither Lenovo nor AT&T is saying anything about the device just yet, and Jacobs doesn't seem to have offered much more than what was already known from the standa

Apple startet iTunes Preview
Viele kennen das Problem: Klickt man auf einen Link in den iTunes Store, öffnet sich sofort iTunes und es dauert unter Umständen 15 bis 60 Sekunden, bis im Endeffekt das Gewünschte sichtbar wird. Dies scheint Apple nun laut MacWorld.com geändert zu haben. Ein iTunes-Link führt nun nicht mehr direkt in den iTunes Store, sondern zuerst auf eine Webseite, die eine Vorschau anzeigt. Incipio, CAZE announce new iPhone and iPod touch cases
Incipio and CAZE have announced new cases for the iPhone and iPod touch. Incipio's latest is the Feather, a shell for the iPhone 3G/3GS and the second-gen iPod touch. It is less than 1mm thin, and made of a light polymer. A soft matte finish is used, and bundled with the case are two surface protectors and a cleaning cloth. The Feather comes in five different Touch colors, or 14 different iPhone variants including black, turquoise, purple, yellow and green.

PDF2Office for iWork 1.0 converts PDFs for Pages, Keynote
Recosoft has launched a new PDF converter for Apple's iWork suite, PDF2Office for iWork v1.0. The software attempts to restore layouts in its conversion process, recreating paragraphs and tables. Gartner: iPhone widens lead over smaller rivals
Apple has extended its influence on the smartphone market even further, Gartner says in its data for the summer. The combined iPhone platform leapt from 12.9 percent to 17.1 percent of worldwide share in the summer, or third place, where the next-best competitor, HTC, topped out at 6.5 percent after increasing from 4.5 percent a year earlier. Samsung was near-flat and moved up just slightly to 3.2 percent.

CalDigit increases hard drive capacities to 2TB
CalDigit has announced increased storage support in terms of its hard drives and several of its RAID storage systems. The companyís previous hard drives were only available in capacities up to 1.5TB, but can now range up to 2TB at no extra cost. Enhancements have appropriately been made to the companyís CalDigit VR, HDElement, HDOne and HDPro RAID systems. Capacities can now extend from 4TB up to 16TB, or as much as 32TB when combined with other supporting systems.

AT&T adds Verizon's Island of Misfit Toys holiday ads to lawsuit, demands they be yanked off the air
Well, you knew this was coming -- AT&T's amended its advertising lawsuit against Verizon to include Big Red's new holiday ads, including that oh-so-cute Island of Misfit Toys spot, and demanded that they be taken off the air. At question is the same map of AT&T's 3G coverage used in the other commercial, which Ma Bell says misleads customers into thinking it has no service at all in large swaths of the country. Best part? Boxee device coming Dec. 7
Boxee today confirmed talk that it would produce its own hardware. The media center startup now says it has partnered with an unnamed home electronics company to make its own set-top box and that a mockup as well as further details will be shown at an already-planned December 7th event that was to mark the Boxee software entering beta. Most details aren't known, but Boxee stresses that the device will still let users choose from a wide variety of sources rather than a narrow channel.

I can't tell you—and the pictures can't show you—how utterly open and expansive the room feels. To give you an idea of the space, the walls are 45 feet tall, and could fit 11 Apple Cubes inside. The spareness is breathtaking. It's cold. Not literally, but the stone walls, the glass, the sheer space rob it of any sense of warmth or feeling. The only sense of life in room is the products. According to the latest data from research firm Gartner, Apple accounted for 17% of worldwide smartphone sales in the third quarter. Walmart's $30 deal vaults Pixi from 'meh' to 'sure, I'll take three'
At $100, the underpowered Pixi doesn't look like a great value against its bigger, older brother -- but at the $30 Walmart is charging through its partner LetsTalk, the game changes a bit, doesn't it? Sure, $70 isn't that huge of a difference quantitatively, but emotionally, $30 is basically an overpriced meal or two -- and considering the old adage of "a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips," wouldn't you just rather have webOS? Intel plans three ultraportable Core i5, i7 chips
Intel is planning on releasing three new 32nm dual-core CPUs for ultrathin notebooks in the first half of next year, Digitimes reported on Thursday. Their notebook manufacturing sources claim the 1.2GHz Core i7-640UM, 1.06GHz Core i7-620UM and 1.06GHz Core i5-520UM would be aimed at the high- to mid-range ultraportable markets and replace the current 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo SU9600. As Core i7 models, the two faster chips would support Hyperthreading and sometimes give these chips the behavior of quad-core models.

TomTom iPhone app to gain text-to-speech, lane guidance
The TomTom navigation app for the iPhone will soon receive a major software update, the company says. Some planned changes include the addition of text-to-speech, a feature common to most dedicated GPS devices, providing an audio description of directions for busy drivers. Qualcomm chips promises 1GHz speeds in 'mainstream smartphones,' simultaneous HSPA+ / LTE support
Qualcomm's Snapdragon has brought about a new wave of possibilities for smartphones, but evidently those chips are just too exclusive to slip into so-called "mainstream smartphones." In order to remedy such a tragedy, the outfit has today introduced the MSM7x30 family of solutions, which uses an 800 MHz to 1GHz custom superscalar CPU based on the ARM v7 instruction set. They say competition is a gift to help you change, so good news for Apple TV fans as that particular set-top box now has even more competition when it comes to streaming entertainment, as the Boxee team have announced a partnership with a company which will bring a set top box equipped with the team’s technology, first sight of which comes December 7.“We have signed our first partnership with a CE company. Apple pulls wraps off of Upper West Side NYC store
Apple has revealed that its Upper West Side store -- based in New York City -- will open to the public at 10AM on November 14th. The outlet is Apple's fourth in Manhattan and 280th worldwide; it will employ over 200 workers, and on its basement level feature the company's "largest area ever" devoted to training and tech support, for instance incorporating a 45-foot Genius Bar. Normal operating hours will run from 9AM to 9PM Monday through Saturday, and 9AM to 7PM on Sunday.

AMD hat auf seinem gestrigen Financial Analysts Day eine Roadmap für kommende Prozessorgenerationen vorgestellt. Samsung arbeitet an einem eigenen OS für Smartphone-Reihe, auf Symbian hat man in Korea keine Lust mehr. Bada heißt das neue Betriebssystem und im ersten Quartal des kommenden Jahres soll das erste Telefon in den Handel kommen. So könnte es aussehen. Aufgetaucht ist dieses Rendering auf der holländischen Webseite Mobile Phone Helpdesk Europe. Bada und die dazugehörigen Telefone sollen das iPhone attackieren, ein eigener AppStore ist ebenfalls geplant. Ob das hier Fake oder Wirklichkeit ist wer weiß das schon. IBM weiht neue Deutschlandzentrale ein
IBM hat heute die neue Unternehmenszentrale in Ehningen bei Stuttgart eingeweiht. Zur Eröffnung des Firmensitzes waren unter anderem Hans Bernhard Beus, Staatssekretär im Bundesministerium des Innern und Beauftragter der Bundesregierung für Informationstechnik, und Günther Oettinger, Ministerpräsident des Landes Baden-Württemberg, gekommen. In dem vierstöckigen Neubau sind auf 4500 Quadratmetern Grundfläche rund 12.000 Quadratmeter Büro- und Konferenzräume untergebracht. Der 2008 begonnene Neubau und der bereits seit 1986 bestehende Gebäudekomplex beherbergen derzeit 3000 Mitarbeiter und ein Kundeninformationscenter.

Intel to Pay AMD 1.25 Billion USD to Stop Legal Disputes
Intel Announced that it is paying 1.25 billion USD to AMD to settles their on-going legal procedures (including anti-trust and patent infringement lawsuits). In return AMD will stop all suits in US and Japan, as well as withdraw or not initiate suits to antitrust authorities worldwide. While Intel appealed the decision from the European Commission in May to fine the founder 1.45 billion USD for violating European antitrust law, EU representatives already reacted to Intel-AMD settlement but made it clear that it does not change anything concerning the on-going lawsuit initiated by the EC and the fact that Intel has to comply with EU laws.

Samsung denies claims of dropping Symbian
Just one day after Samsung's senior VP Don Joo said the electronics manufacturer will be dropping Symbian in favor of its bada mobile operating system developed in-house, the company has responded by denying this likelihood. According to a Thursday statement, Samsung says such a strategy is not in line with its smartphone plans. The company also stated it's an initial member of the Symbian Foundation and will continue to cooperate with the group, which also involves Nokia, Sony Ericsson and others.

Livestream today announced the immediate availability of its free service for streaming live to the iPhone and iPod touch, Livestream Procaster.Livestream Procaster users can stream live from their webcam, video camera or even broadcast their PC or Mac desktop, directly to iPhone users over 3G or Wi-Fi connections, with less than five minutes of setup. AT&T demands Verizon pull 3G ads
AT&T late Wednesday amended its lawsuit against Verizon to demand its rival pull its ads. The new version of the complaint asks the Federal Court to block all Verizon ads attacking AT&T's 3G coverage and would silence much of Verizon's marketing campaign for the holidays. AT&T acknowledges that the coverage map itself is accurate for 3G but implies no coverage in many of the areas AT&T still services with 2G.

Apple has deployed a new Get a Mac ad, this time directed not at TV audiences but at YouTube viewers. Mac (Justin Long) and PC (John Hodgman) stand at one side of the front page, watching security camera footage at the top showing former PC users entering Apple Stores. AMD hatte im März Meldung an die Börsenaufsichtsbehörde SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) gemacht, dass Intel mit der Aufkündigung des vor acht Jahren geschlossenen Cross-Licensing-Abkommens droht. AMD, Intel call truce in antitrust, patent fights
AMD and Intel this morning unveiled a surprise deal to end all of their respective antitrust and patent cross-licensing disputes. The move ends AMD's lawsuits against Intel in both the US and Japan as well as its "regulatory complaints" worldwide. In exchange, Intel promises to pay AMD $1.25 billion and to abide by a new set of business practices. The two have also entered into a five-year cross-licensing deal for each other's technology.

Second Microsoft official denies Mac influence on Windows 7
The appearance of Windows 7 is not based on Mac OS X, says Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc, writing on the official Windows Blog. A Microsoft partner group manager, Simon Aldous, recently told the the press that the "look and feel" of the new OS was based deliberately on the "graphical and easy to use" nature of the Mac interface, allegedly one of its main draws. Windows 7 does feature elements strongly similar to Mac OS X, such as the Expose-like Aero Peek and a Dock-like taskbar.

Anfang Oktober angekündigt, ist der von iHome vorgestellte Radiowecker mit den zwei Dock-Anschlüssen IP88, mittlerweile auch in Deutschland erhältlich. Wir haben uns den Nachfolger der IP9 (hier im ausführlichen Video-Review vorgestellt) angesehen und müssen zumindest all jenen unter euch, die auch einen vernünftigen Radioempfänger erwarten, leider vom Kauf abraten. Dell chases Mac mini with official Zino HD
Dell this morning officially unveiled its most direct attempt at claiming the ultra-compact desktop space currently held by the Mac mini. Shown after multiple teases, the Inspiron Zino HD occupies roughly the same footprint as its Apple counterpart but uses AMD processors to keep the costs low while still supplying options its rival doesn't have. The micro PC is seen as a home theater PC and comes with native HDMI output as well as options of discrete Radeon HD 4330 graphics and a Blu-ray drive.

Laut dem IT Marktforschungs- und Beratungsunternehmen Gartner wurden weltweit im dritten Quartal 2009 insgesamt 308,9 Millionen Handys verkauft; dies entspricht einem Anstieg von 0,1 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahreszeitraum. Es wurden weltweit über 41 Millionen Smartphones im dritten Quartal 2009 verkauft. Dies entspricht einem Anstieg von 12,8 Prozent gegenüber dem selben Zeitraum im Vorjahr. Joe Hewitt, the developer of Facebook.app for the iPhone has resigned according to his Twitter account. Facebook's iPhone app is one of the most popular and one of only a handful installed on more than 50% of all iPhones and iPod touches.
He didn't give reason for the move but said he handed the job off to another developer. He will stay on as a Facebook developer working on other projects (*cough* tablet*).

Apple's rumored tablet may have the option of a pen for input, a US patent filing published today suggests. The application for a patent on getting ink data from "pen-aware computer systems" shows an example device with slight interface cues from the Newton, such as the bottom icon tray, but with a significantly different design and a different engine. GPS-Case soll iTouch navifähig machen
Zubehörhersteller via Dual Electronics will eine Hülle für Apples iPod touch anbieten, in die ein GPS-Empfänger eingebaut ist. So soll das Gerät, das ja eigentlich ohne (Kamera und) GPS-Sensor auskommen muss, dennoch zum Navigationsgerät avancieren. Die Hülle XGPS300 soll ohne die (noch nicht im App Store verfügbare) Navigationssoftware NavAtlas ausgeliefert werden, diese soll für Käufer der Hardware aber kostenlos bereitgestellt werden. Auch andere Anwendungen, die das GPS-Signal des iPhones auswerten können, sollen mit dem Peripheriegerät funktionieren. In der Hülle sind außerdem ein Akku sowie ein Lautsprecher und eine Audio-Ausgangsbuchse verbaut. Der Akku soll die Laufzeit des iPods ungefähr verdoppeln. Eine Frontscheibenhalterung mit Saugknopf befindet sich an der Rückseite. Über den Zigarettenanzünder kann das Gerät aufgeladen werden. Xing verzeichnet erneut deutliches Umsatzwachstum
Xing hat seinen Umsatz dank wachsender Mitgliederzahlen im dritten Quartal 2009 (PDF) auf 11,7 Millionen Euro gesteigert. Lucids Hydra-Chip erstmals getestet
Ende Oktober machte sich ein wenig Ernüchterung breit, als das von MSI groß angekündigte Mainboard mit einem PCIe-Switch aus dem Hause Lucid nicht auf den Markt kam. Nein, wir wissen nicht wirklich, was im Inneren einer Kamera passiert, wenn man auf den Auslöser drückt. Aber vielleicht ändert das dieser Bausatz, der gerade im Prototyp-Stadium für Aufsehen sorgt. Die Digicam als Bausatz will Schluss machen mit diesem ganzen Technik-Voodoo und lässt Kinder (und uns) selber ans Fließband. Entwickelt wurde das Kit an der Columbia University in New York. O2 mit Rekordumsatz von 965,7 Millionen Euro im dritten Quartal
Telefónica O2 Germany hat im dritten Quartal einen Rekordumsatz von 965,7 Millionen Euro erwirtschaftet. Das sind 5,5 Prozent mehr als im Vorjahr. Die Erträge aus dem Mobilfunkbereich beliefen sich nach Unternehmensangaben auf 729,1 Millionen Euro, 0,4 Prozent weniger als im dritten Quartal 2008. Das weitgehend dem EBITDA entsprechende OIBDA (Operational Income before Depreciation and Amortization) stieg um 22,4 Prozent auf 234,9 Millionen Euro.

Versatel meldet leichten Umsatz- und Gewinnzuwachs
Versatel hat im dritten Quartal 2009 "trotz einer rückläufigen Entwicklung des Privatkundenmarktes" ein leichtes Umsatzplus von 0,3 Prozent auf 181,1 Millionen Euro erzielt. Der bereinigte Gewinn vor Steuern, Zinsen und Abschreibungen (EBITDA) stieg gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres um 3,7 Prozent auf 50,9 Millionen Euro. If you're anything like us, you're terrified of whales for pretty much no reason. Seiko's newest alarm clock -- the Ocean Theater -- probably isn't for you then. Fair enough, but plenty of people are not maladjusted, and we're willing to admit that it's pretty cool, even if it's terrifying. The clock, which responds to touch, can project various marine life upon your walls, and we imagine it'll be a huge hit with children. HP will 3Com übernehmen und erhöht Prognose

The venerable 2001 classic of an OS, Windows XP, strikes again. The scribes over at Laptop have put together a rather damning battery life comparison between old grey beard and the fresh Windows 7, which finds that on average netbooks get 47 minutes less battery life with the upgraded software. Auch die 27-Zoll iMacs mit dem Intel Core i7 Prozessor werden nun verschickt. Gut drei Wochen nach Vorstellungen der neuen iMacs dürften so langsam alle Bestellungen ausgeführt werden. Optoma doesn't have a price, release date or even a name for this thing, but it's a pretty solid idea: a portfolio-style case with slots for a pico projector and miscellanea on one side, with a pop-up miniature projector screen on the other half. Did Microsoft Steal Open Source Code?
This is a story that might well be quickly putting a company into a serious trouble. A developer was having fun in dissecting the code of tools allowing creation of USB key to be able to initiate the installation process from a disc image. While digging, he discovered that those tolls were using a large part of code originating from an Open source software released under GPL license agreement. Of course, Microsoft does not seem to have followed the rules of the GPL by uploading back its modified version of the code. The tool software has now been removed from Microsoft download center, and the company did not comment further this decision nor answered to claims.
As Microsoft is probably not willing to play with fire, one can imagine that a Microsoft developer found an easy way to quickly do his work by getting the code from the Open Source repository. Although we were too late to verify for ourselves, both Joystiq and Scrawl swear up and down that the above three images, each of whom unfortunately lack a higher-res version, all hail from the official Sony Computer Entertainment Europe website, and each showing a feature of the PlayStation 3's XMB we haven't seen before: some form of Facebook integration, the ability to change gamercard colors, and a new method of photo organization / perusal. The highlight for the semiconductor firm is "Bulldozer," a major revision for both desktops and notebooks that should be much more efficient at multithreaded codethan existing designs. It will be particularly optimized for pairing with graphics chipsets and will be supplemented by "Bobcat," a variant of Bulldozer tailored to ultraportables.
