Apple overtakes Nokia as most profitable phone maker
Apple is now the single most profitable phone maker in the US, Strategy Analytics said today. Although it has just 2.5 percent share and makes just two similar iPhone models, Apple is estimated to have generated about $1.6 billion in operating profit from its cellphones in the summer where market leader Nokia said it had only generated $1.1 billion. Nokia's second-place finish comes despite it being one of the most experienced phone builders and Apple having only entered the category in 2007.

Palm Pixi seen running webOS 1.3.1 on video
We've already seen a quick Palm Pixi unboxing and hands-on video, but we're guessing most folks are looking for a bit more than that in the lead-up to launch day. Dual GPS cradle brings navigation to iPhone, iPod touch
Dual Electronics on Tuesday revealed the XGPS300 GPS cradle, which enables an iPhone -- or the typically GPS-lacking iPod touch -- to perform turn-by-turn car navigation. HP Envy 15 unboxing and hands-on
After our mixed feelings on the HP Envy 13, we were excited but also a little bit scared to see the 13's big brother, the Envy 15. It's running a Core i7 processor clocked at 1.6GHz, and has 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 discrete graphics fronted by a 1920 x 1080 15.6-inch display despite the fact that it doesn't have a built-in disc drive. Luckily there's an external Blu-ray packed into the box (that's a $225 option on top of the $1,800 base price), but most games and apps these days are available via download anyway, so it's not that big of knock on your power-user cred. Senator's bill would bar early-cancel rate spikes
Minnesota Democrat Senator Amy Klobuchar said on Monday that she will introduce a measure to prevent US cellular carriers from raising their early termination fees (ETFs) quickly. The move is a direct reaction to Verizon's decision to double ETF rates for "advanced devices" like the Droid to deter customers from exiting their service early. Klobuchar claims the rate hike has "little to no relation" to the cost of the phone and that it punishes those who depend on cellphones and have to quit for honest reasons, such as moving into regions that don't have coverage.

NSF backs development of laser-guided robot wheelchairs
It's been well over a year since we last saw the laser-guided, self-docking wheelchair developed by folks at Lehigh University, and now the team is back with an altogether more ambitious project. According to associate professor John Spletzer, the recipient of a five-year CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation, the goal is to "extend the autonomy of the wheelchair so it can navigate completely in an urban setting and take you wherever you need to go." Orange UK claims 30,000 in first-day iPhone sales
Orange has already sold over 30,000 iPhones in its first day of UK iPhone sales, according to company figures. Sales began at 7AM local time, and hit the 30,000 mark by 4PM, leaving room for after-work shoppers to increase the launch tally further. The company claims to have broken the all-time record for single-day phone sales in the UK.

Hands-on with Rogers' 21Mbps HSPA+ 3G
Over the past few days, Electronista has had the opportunity to test Rogers' new HSPA+ 3G service to see whether or not it lives up to the cellular provider's claims and see what T-Mobile USA users can expect in the near future. With peak speeds of about 21Mbps, it's theoretically three times faster than the best anyone has to offer on a national level. Dual-screen enTourage eDGe ebook reader gets a little hands-on time
We're still reserving our doubts about the viability of the enTourage eDGe -- after all, at $490 you can buy yourself a respectable netbook and a halfway decent ereader for the appropriate occasion -- but we won't say that we're not interested. Just under a month after it hit the scene, the dual-screen device has landed (in prototype form) over at Gearlog, and while some of the features weren't functional, the physical build shouldn't change much when it goes final. Apple ships Core i7-based iMacs
Apple has begun shipping the more powerful Core i7 version of the 27-inch iMac, according to shipping notices. A variant of the already high-end Core i5 model, which began shipping yesterday, the i7 boosts core speeds from 2.66 to 2.8GHz, and also enables performance-enhancing technologies such as hyperthreading. Features are otherwise identical to the i5, including options for up to 16GB of RAM and 2TB of hard drive storage. A Magic Mouse is included by default.

Remember that Emotiv EPOC mind-controlled USB controller from last year? Well, we've been dreaming of controlling a game of pong with merely our thought waves ever since, and it looks like our wish might at last be granted. According Emotiv's site, the $299 headgear will be shipping in limited quantities to US customers on December 21st, just in time for your thoughts of the holidays to coalesce into a concentrated, computer-controlling tip. The device works with 14 "saline sensors" applied to the head, in addition to a gyroscope for controlling a camera or cursor, and it comes with the "EmoKey" software to define keyboard shortcuts to be activated by your various expressions and thoughts. NVIDIA tablet mystery solved: an ODM Tegra prototype
NVIDIA just hit us with more info on that mysterious tablet Jen-Hsun Huang was pictured with yesterday, and the truth is just as we'd assumed: it's a Tegra prototype from an ODM called ICD that's being "actively" shopped to carriers around the world. Dual Electronics announces XGPS300 navigation cradle for iPod touch
Well, it looks like iPod touch users pondering the somewhat pricey (and still unfulfilled) proposition offered by TomTom's Car Kit now finally have another option to consider, as Dual Electronics has announced a navigation cradle of its own that's aimed solely at Apple's GPS-less handheld. While it's not quite as sleek as TomTom's unit, Dual's new XGPS300 rig does boast a few decided advantages, including a cradle that also doubles as a rechargeable battery for some added juice when you're out and about and, most importantly, a free NavAtlas navigation app, which will apparently only work with Dual's cradle (sorry, no mix-and-matching here). Dell on Tuesday released three commercial workgroup printers meant for use by businesses. Photoshop gains fixes from Mac OS X 10.6.2 update
Yesterday's Mac OS X 10.6.2 update has also solved some problems related to Photoshop, says Adobe product manager John Nack. The fixes are noted to have been tested with help from Apple, and target problems such as application crashes when opening or saving files. Similarly, crashes and program errors should no longer occur when using the Menlo font, in Premiere as well as in Photoshop.

Google offers free airport Wi-Fi through January
Google today extended its free holiday Wi-Fi deal to include 47 airports. Major stops in common destinations such as Boston, Las Vegas, Orlando and San Jose will have unrestricted wireless Internet access starting from today and lasting through to January 15th. Two of the airports, in Burbank and Seattle, will have the Wi-Fi permanently.

ITC rules Samsung infringed on four Sharp patents, bans import of some LCDs
The US International Trade Commission already ruled in June of this year that Samsung had infringed on one patent held by Sharp, but it's now back with another ruling that finds Samsung violated no less than four LCD-related patents held by its rival. Once again, the ITC has also barred Samsung from selling the infringing LCDs in the US (still not clear on exactly what's affected), but Samsung seems more than ready to comply with the ruling, saying that there will be "no impact on our business and our ability to meet market demand." Die Video Eletronics Standard Association, kurz VESA, hat den Mini DisplayPort heute offiziell zum Standard erklärt.
Der von Apple entwickelte Stecker wird seit 2008 in allen aktuellen Geräten genutzt und ermöglicht eine Auflösung von bis zu 2560×1600 Pixeln.

Deutsche Bank will Desktop-PCs abschaffen
Die Deutsche Bank will ab Mitte 2010 neben Notebooks nur noch Thin Clients einsetzen. "Desktop-PCs werden verschwinden", sagte Carl Brennan, Global Head of Windows Engineering des Finanzinstituts, auf der Microsoft-Hausmesse Tech-Ed in Berlin. Stattdessen setze man auf eine Virtual Desktop Infrastrucutre, das heißt, die Maschinen werden im Rechenzentrum virtualisiert. Außer Notebooks gibt es dann bei der Bank nur noch Thin Clients.

Measuring some 13,750 square feet, a 2007 banner was larger than normally allowed, and deemed illegal by the state's Outdoor Advertising Board. Einem Bericht des Norddeutschen Rundfunks (NDR) zufolge konnte ein Kunde des Unternehmens die Adresse "alice@alice.de" registrieren und erhielt daraufhin mehr als 100 E-Mails, die Links zu vertraulichen Kundendaten enthielten. Droid sells one tenth iPhone's numbers on launch
The Motorola Droid's quiet launch achieved just a tenth the sales of the iPhone 3GS, according to estimates by Broadpoint AmTech analyst Mark McKechnie. He determines in a note released yesterday that Verizon sold 100,000 of the Android phones on launch weekend, or just a fraction of the 1 million iPhone 3GS units that were sold when AT&T launched that device in June. Orange UK launches iPhone; O2 offers unlocking services
Orange on Tuesday became the second official iPhone carrier in the UK, marking an end to an exclusivity held by O2 since late 2007. Analyst estimates 100,000 DROID smartphones sold in first weekend
The lines may have been subdued, but one way or another, it sounds as if Motorola managed to sell quite a few DROIDs over the weekend. The VESA group today officially released Mini DisplayPort as a finalized standard. Known for short as mDP, the Apple-developed connector can now be used by other companies to attach displays with the expectation that they will meet all the DisplayPort 1.1a specs. Nokia has just launched a massive recall of their chargers for mobile phones. It is nearly 14 million units that will need to be exchanged. These chargers have a weakness with the plastic casing that insulates them and that can easily fall apart, exposing the components and thus being able to cause electrocutions. We already knew that Apple's homegrown Mini DisplayPort connector was being baked into the DisplayPort 1.2 specifications, but now said socket has even more validity in the marketplace thanks to a ringing endorsement from the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Großteil der Tandberg-Aktionäre lehnt Übernahme durch Cisco ab
Cisco stößt bei der geplanten Übernahme des norwegischen Videokonferenzspezialisten Tandberg auf erheblichen Widerstand seitens der Aktionäre. Nokia N900 ships, due in North America soon
Nokia on Tuesday said it has started shipping the N900, its new flagship. The crossover between its Internet tablets and media smartphones is the company's first phone to use Maemo Linux instead of Symbian and is better-suited to modern computing: it has both a full Mozilla-based browser with Flash but basic multi-touch and multitasking that can support many simultaneous apps open. Helping this is along are a fast ARM Cortex-A8 processor and 256MB of RAM that closely resemble the hardware in the iPhone 3GS.

Gnome 3.0 Release-Termin auf September 2010 verschoben
In einem Schreiben an die Gnome-Developer-Mailingliste teilte Vincent Untz vom Gnome-Release-Team mit, dass der Erscheinungstermin der Version 3.0 des Gnome-Desktops auf September 2010 verschoben wird. That Ricoh GXR camera system we saw yesterday has today become official, and dpreview have gotten on the case to provide an early preview and a set of sample images taken with the shooter. The novelty to this new setup is in the so-called lens units, which contain both a lens and an appropriately matched sensor inside a sealed casing. This precludes dust from getting in where it doesn't belong and provides a tailored pairing of optics and electronics. Vodafone steigert Umsatz um 9,3 Prozent
Vodafone hat im ersten Halbjahr seines Geschäftsjahres 2009/2010, das am 31. März 2010 endet, eine Umsatzsteigerung um 9,3 Prozent auf 21,8 Milliarden Pfund (24,24 Milliarden Euro) erzielt. Navigationssysteme fürs iPhone gehören zu den hochpreisigsten Apps, die man sich zulegen kann, versprechen aber gleichzeitig auch höchsten Praxisnutzen. Im Erfolgsfalle kann ja sogar die Investition in ein oder sogar mehrere fest installierte Navigationssysteme überflüssig werden. Der portugiesische Anbieter NDrive hat bislang 32 Kartenkombinationen für sein iPhone-Navi vorgestellt, welche laut Anbieter in 20 nationalen App Stores "dominante Positionen" einnehmen. Mitgeholfen haben dürfte dabei, dass die NDrive-Angebote preislich teils deutlich unter denen der Wettbewerber wie Navigon, TomTom oder Sygic liegen. A story of a dishonest delivery man?
In the words of one of our readers:
I ordered an Imac from the Apple Store last week and I awaited the delivery via UPS scheduled for today. Connecting to the interface to see where my Imac had got to, I had the surprise to see the status changed to "delivered" , without having received anything! This is my 4th order to the same address (an office open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.…), so I immediately contacted the 'after-sales-service' of Apple. I was even more prompt to react when I noticed on the interface that the package had been signed for by a person named "RENE". Once in contact with the person in charge of the orders, I learn with stupor that I am not an isolated case and that at least two other people did not receive their order today from UPS whereas the status is "delivered". Worse still, the person who signed is each time was "RENE". They promised to investigate and to find my mac and will contact UPS, I would be kept informed by email (at this moment I do not have any news).

MiddleClick: 3-Finger-Tippen in Safari als Mittelklick
Trotz Multitouch muss im Browser immer noch CMD + Klick genutzt werden um einen Link in einem neuen Tab zu öffnen. Das liegt an der bisher nicht unterstützten Mitteltaste beziehungsweise dem nicht entsprechend belegbaren Tippen mit 3 Fingern.
Ein kleines Tool namens MiddleClick ermöglicht die Nutzung des 3-Finger-Tippens als Mitteltaste, womit sich Links in Safari

SSD in fünf Jahren gleich teuer wie normale HDD?

By a mere chance, I noted that if one puts a console PlayStation®3 SIXAXIS /DualShock 3 to be charged via USB on my Mac running Snow Leopard Mac OS X 10.6.1 with Bluetooth configured to accept new peripherals, that by pressing the button PS of the console created an automatic addition of the console. One can then disconnect and use it via Bluetooth without any further configuration! It is really super practical and easy.
Notes:
• The 4 LEDs flicker permanently since a number cannot be allocated. • To turn it off - all it needs is to press it is advisable to maintain the PS key for a moment.

First sale figures for Windows 7 indicate that the new OS is selling well, definitely a good point for Microsoft. When comparing figures between Windows 7 and Vista, the company records + 234% higher volume sales; however, one should not forget that Vista was the worst selling OS made by Microsoft. IT might look completely different if we would compare it to XP or Win98, especially if we take into account the number of active computer. If Microsoft is celebrating and trying to make a buzz about it, Pc manufacturers are not as happy as Redmond's giant. Indeed, according to Digitimes, the release of the new OS does not generate a significant impact on hardware sales and figures remain rather flat. PC manufacturers and resellers might be the victims of the Win7 effect, as the RAM manufacturers were the unfortunate target of the Vista failure.

PC-Prozessormarkt erreicht Rekordwachstum im dritten Quartal
Der Prozessormarkt hat nach Angaben des Marktforschungsunternehmens IDC zwischen Juli und September ein Rekordwachstum von 23 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorquartal erreicht. Mit dem PowerPad stellt GEAR4 das nach eigenen Angaben erste eigens für das iPhone 3G / 3 GS entwickelte kabellose Ladegerät vor - aber vgl. das ebenfalls Induktion nutzende Angebot von Powermat. Wie dieses erfordert auch PowerPad eine spezielle Hülle, um das iPhone induktiv laden zu können. Samsung announces Bada mobile OS, SDK sets sail in December
Because what the world needs now is yet another mobile operating system, Samsung has announced its foray into the field with Bada. Not much to reveal at this point other than some key PR speak: the name means "ocean" in Korean, the company's committed to "a variety of open platforms" in mobile industry and it plans this to be easy to integrate / customize based on carrier's experience. The software, whose name is based on the Korean for "ocean," is designed to be open and will compete directly against rivals like Android or LiMo. All Android phones only have 250MB for app storage?
One of the things that no one has really talked about much on the Android platform is the limit of installing apps to the ROM (news to us). AndroidandMe exposes this significant issue with the Google OS:
The Droid ships with a 512 MB ROM which contains only 256 MB available for app storage. Google does not support installing apps to the SD card (and likely never will), so developers are limited in what they can create.
Google is all about the Cloud so this is likely something they've considered, but it will significantly limit what can be put on an Android phone like the Droid. 256MB is only enough for a few mid-sized games. Somehow I think Apple

OpenOffice distances itself from OpenOfficeMouse, joins everyone else
Well, the OpenOfficeMouse rightly caused a bit of skepticism when it was officially announced earlier this week, and it turns out it is something of a fraud after all -- just not the way you might think. Yes, the multi-buttoned mouse is still all too real (in prototype form, at least), and supposedly set for a release sometime, but it seems that mouse's creator got a bit ahead of himself in slapping the OpenOffice name on it. HP rolls out new budget LCDs, two desktops
HP kicked off its week by launching a pair of business-focused LCDs as well as two desktops to match. The 17-inch LE1711 and its closely related 19-inch counterpart, the LE1911, are spun as eco-friendly displays that still use conventional backlights but use 50 percent less mercury and entirely scrap toxics like arsenic, BFRs and PVC.
