Windows 7 to get 2,000 bug fixes pointed out by testers
Microsoft has been a bit lax in communicating with beta testers of its Windows 7 operating system who have reported problems or bugs to the company -- according to some of the testers, anyway. Well, apparently they've been really busy! Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president for the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group at Microsoft, has just directly addressed the issue of bugs in a blog post, noting some pretty astounding figures. Apple testing OS X 10.5.7 update
Following the release of Mac OS X 10.5.6 in December, Apple is now said to be testing the next maintenance and security update to the Leopard operating system, Mac OS X 10.5.7, according to AppleInsider. Sources indicate that the upcoming version includes a large number of bug fixes, with nearly six dozen code corrections already contained in the 440MB pre-release package.

MacBook Airs suffering from bad hinges?
First-generation MacBook Airs may have a fundamental flaw in their hinge construction, accounts suggest. A number of Air owners claim that after several months of use, hinges can become unreasonably loose, sometimes enough for a lid to travel or close completely without any help. Seagate drops Stec patent suit due to economy
Hard drive and flash-based memory maker Seagate announced on Thursday that is has dropped its patent suit against competitor Stec and that Stec has likewise dropped its countersuit, Forbes reports. Seagate said in a statement that pursuing the matter is no longer cost-efficient and the recent poor economic conditions have slowed Stec's sales of the technology that was being disputed in the lawsuit

HP promises fix for Mini 1000 webcam problem
Well, that was fast -- we were wondering where that Gear Diary video of an HP employee fixing the defective webcam on a Vivienne Tam Mini 1000 went, and it turns out that it was pulled at ol' Hewpie's request. The company's promised to release an official statement with instructions for sending in affected machines, and we'd guess it doesn't want customers taking matters -- and display bezels -- into their own hands while they sort out a plan. Sounds reasonable to us -- and we know you understand it too, which is why we've posted a similar video after the break.

NVIDIA Ion to begrudgingly support Core 2 Duo by Q4?
It's easy to overlook amidst all PowerPoint-fueled fisticuffs but, in addition to slinging rebuttals at Intel and muttering insults under its breath, NVIDIA also appears to have dropped a bit of news about its next-generation Ion platform. While we had already heard that Ion 2 would be supporting VIA's Nano processor in addition to Intel's Atom, it looks like it'll also support Core 2 Duo processors, and even Pentiums and Celerons for good measure. Researchers use nano-origami to build tiny 3D devices
MIT researchers are developing a new technique to create simple 3D structures out of nanoscale materials. Called "nano-origami," the kids are essentially using traditional micro- and nano-fabrication techniques to make 2D objects, at which point they are folded into pre-determined shapes. The folds can be induced by a number of means, including metal deposits (usually chromium), helium ions, and by running electricity through gold wires embedded in the material. While the process is still in its infancy (and all these options only work to a point) a simple 3D nanoscale capacitor has already been built. Crickey! DISH Network's hotly anticipated DTVPal DVR -- which, by the way, is the first standalone OTA HD DVR to come out in years -- seems to be causing all sorts of frustration amongst owners. So much, in fact, that DISH now has engineers trying to replicate problems and issue firmware updates; in the meanwhile, the box has suddenly "sold out" from the DTVPal website. Mapping robots equipped with visual vocab filters for more accurate mapping
Mapping robots have been tooling around the earth for quite some time, but a new development in their tech seems to be leading them in the direction of far more accurate results. In general, these mapping bots scan the territory they are in, but often have trouble recognizing a location they have previously seen because of incidental changes, such as the addition of a car here and there. MacBook Air hinge defect not covered by Apple's warranty?
Our rocky history with the MacBook Air Rev. A has been well documented, and while Apple would very much like us to forget all about it and plop down another $1,800 for the much-improved Rev. B, not everybody has that sort of birthday money to throw around. Reports of cracked hinges on the laptop are nothing new, but we always assumed Apple would eventually 'fess up to the problem and comp those repairs. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case, and we just got another report of a hapless MacBook Air owner who has a broken hinge that Apple says will cost $800 to repair, despite the fact the laptop is under warranty. Acer's Ion-based Hornet nettop leaked in presentation slides?
Despite NVIDIA's claims that we'd have an Ion desktop sometime this Spring, we still haven't really seen it in consumer-bound hardware -- until now, that is. Although unconfirmed, slides have purportedly leaked out of what is said to be the Acer Hornet Ion-based nettop. Aside from the platform and a HDMI output, we don't have any specs for the machine. Well, we dug up some hands-on pics of that new waterproof Canon PowerShot D10 we've been hearing about recently. Obviously, since it's aimed at the "sport" set it has to be available in "camouflage," and since it's waterproof it has to be sort of bulky. As for the stats, this guy rocks a 12.1-megapixel sensor, DIGIC 4 processor, 3x zoom, image stabilization, and a 2.5-inch PureColor LCD II display that's said to be twice as bright as the company's standard LCD II. A bit of surgery gives the HP Mini 1000 new sight
HP's Mini 1000 might get all the ladies, but the netbook is not without its flaws. Apparently in the manufacturing process somebody forgot to remove the protective film from the webcam lens, giving thousands of netbooks incredibly impaired vision of their handsome owners. HP hasn't fessed up to the problem in any grand manner, but an HP employee was kind enough to do some on-the-spot surgery of Gear Diary's Vivienne Tam-edition Mini 1000. ATI Radeon RV740 prototype 40nm video card gets reviewed, loved on
The Guru of 3D (not an actual guru, by the way) got its hands on a prototype ATI Radeon RV740 video card, and has been kind enough to put the thing through its paces. This is the company's first 40nm video card and while the review should all be taken with a grain of salt -- being "done with beta drivers and an early engineering sample board" -- preliminary results are quite positive. The card performs "fairly close to a Radeon HD 4850," something you don't often hear about in cards retailing for less than a hundred bucks. In fact, the reviewer was so taken by the card's performance at this price point that he predicts that this thing will be responsible for nothing less than "another shift in current mid-range pricing." NVIDIA responds to Intel's Ion dismissal, all eyes on recess for confrontation
It wasn't too hard to see this one coming, but NVIDIA has now shot back at Intel and responded point by point to each accusation Intel made recently about its Ion platform. For starters, while NVIDIA doesn't exactly dispute that Ion is just a repurposed MCP79M/MCP7A chipset, it does say that Ion is a "modern 2 chip solution," while Intel is relying on a "4-year-old 3 chip design." NVIDIA also points out that Ion is certified by Microsoft to deliver the "premium Windows experience," and not just Windows XP, and that, contrary to Intel's claim, Ion does in fact offer similar battery life to an Intel-based system while a

Intelligent Siftables blocks get even more face time
We were captivated when we first came across David Merrill's brilliantly simple Siftables idea last year, and though some time has passed us by, we're no less amazed this go 'round. Having already handled the Kindle 2 at it's launch in New York City, we had a pretty good idea of what we'd be getting into after it arrived at the bunker. Worm infiltrates computer, disables CPU fan, causes overheating
If you have both cats and dirt you may want to be wary of a new type of worm that's infecting computers across Great Britain -- or computer, anyway. It's called an earthworm, and one of the five-inch variety stealthily found its way into the laptop of one Mark Taylor. He began receiving overheating errors and took his machine to a technician who promptly found the unfortunate invertebrate wedged in the cooling fan, slowly crisping thanks to the system's heat. Taylor thinks one of his cats dug up the worm, brought it inside, and then the poor thing crawled through one of the cooling vents on his notebook to flee its pursuer.

Right, we know -- it's probably the hideous FCC photograph that's turning us off on the design, but there's still something here that just screams 1997. Nitpicking aside, the so-called Bluepeaker is a multifaceted device that provides GPS data to Bluetooth-equipped phones, PDAs and laptops, all while doubling as a BT speaker (audio streaming is obviously supported) or a BT speakerphone (handsfree is a lock). Dell ships eco LCDs, prices Studio XPS 435
Dell on Thursday started shipping its first two consciously eco-friendly LCDs. The 22-inch G2210 and 24-inch G2410 are both tuned to use power only when necessary and have ambient light sensors that auto-adjust the backlight to match the environment. Intel kritisiert Nvidias Geschäftsmodell

Einmal mehr fanden sich gestern Apple-Aktionäre zu einem jährlichen Treffen zusammen, um den Vorstand neu zu wählen und über Anträge aus dem Kreis der Anteilsinhaber zu entscheiden. Hyundai's B-490i Dolphin cellphone is ridiculously clever
You know, when we first read the image-less text describing Hyundai's dolphin-shaped cellphone, our instinctual, caffeine-injected reflex was to launch into an angst-ridden assault on the MB-490i. Then we saw the pictures and, well, dammit, we kind of like it. Somehow Hyundai managed to make the aquatic scroll-wheel on the front mirrored by cascading waves of aluminum along the backside work. Even the pale blue eyeball on the side comes across as tasteful without kitsch. Spec-wise, we're looking at a 240 x 400 touchscreen display augmented by a swipeable touchscreen surface below, a 2.0 megapixel camera (no flash), Yamaha speaker, Bluetooth, and a €250 price tag when it launches in May. Blu-ray-Lizenzen umfassen künftig Rechte für DVD und CD
Sony, Philips und Panasonic haben ein neues Lizenzmodell für Blu-ray-Player angekündigt. Hersteller von Abspielgeräten sollen ab Mitte 2009 eine Lizenz kaufen können, die alle Patente für die Wiedergabe oder Aufnahme von Blu-ray-Medien, DVDs und CDs enthält. Bisher müssen die Rechte an den Technologien einzeln erworben werden. Den Kostenvorteil des neuen Lizenzmodells beziffern die drei Unternehmen auf 40 Prozent.

QSC steigert Umsatz im Jahr 2008 deutlich
QSC hat im Geschäftsjahr 2008 nach vorläufigen Berechnungen den Umsatz um 23 Prozent auf 413,3 Millionen Euro gesteigert. Im Vorjahr hatte er 335,2 Millionen Euro betragen. Das EBITDA-Ergebnis verdoppelte sich nahezu: von 34,9 Millionen Euro im Vorjahr auf 67,3 Millionen Euro. Mit einem Plus von 0,8 Millionen Euro nach einem Minus von 12,7 Millionen Euro im Jahr 2007 erzielte das Unternehmen nach vorläufigen Berechnungen zugleich ein positives Konzernergebnis.

Nur kurz bei Ebay: Prototyp der 1. iPod-Generation
Mike Evangelist bekam in seiner Funktion als Apple Produktmanager kurz vor dem Start der Endproduktion eine Vorabversion der ersten, im Oktober 2001 vorgestellten iPod-Generation zum Testen. Den Versuch, das Gerät bei Ebay zu versteigern beendete das Auktionshaus allerdings recht schnell: Apple war mit der Aktion nicht einverstanden.
Vermutlich wollte man nicht, dass die Vorversion, deren Soft- und Hardware später noch verändert wurde in die Hände von Konkurrenten fällt - der Vergleich eines Prototyps mit der finalen Version gibt interessante Schlüsse über die interne Arbeitsweise preis.
Wie auch immer, die Geschichte dokumentiert Mike zusammen mit ein paar Fotos des guten Stücks in seinem Blog. Wir erfahren dort, dass sich die Software auf dem Gerät wegen der Unterschiede zur finalen Version zwar nicht mit den offiziellen Updatern aktualisieren lässt, aber der iPod sehr wohl auch mit den neuesten iTunes-Versionen synchr

IDC: Server-Markt schrumpft im vierten Quartal

AIM für iPhone aktualisiert, kostenpflichtige Version kommt
Der Name klingt wie ein vorgezogener Aprilscherz, aber einer Firma, die wie aus dem Nichts einen kaum konkurrenzfähigen Mac-Instant-Messenger auf den Markt wirft, ist auch dies zuzutrauen: AIM für das iPhone soll eine zusätzliche, kostenpflichtige Version namens "AIM Paid" bekommen. CNet hat sich die Beta von Safari 4 vorgenommen und einen ersten Benchmarktest für Javascript veröffentlicht. Der Vergleich zeigt einen Geschwindigkeitszuwachs: Safari sei der “schnellste Browser auf diesem Planet”; 42mal schneller als IE 7, 6mal als IE 8, 3,5mal schneller als Firefox 3. While Steve Ballmer himself declared that Windows Mobile 7 would be coming out next year, we've got a somewhat less reliable source suggesting that the desktop version of Win7 will be landing this fall. New slimline Acer Aspire One slimline pics, alleged specs leak
After seeing the tiniest bit of evidence this morning of a slimmer Acer Aspire One, an anonymous reader has bragged to netbooknews.de that he's gotten some hands-on time with the laptop, and brought along some purported pics of it as evidence. Dimension-wise, we're looking at 0.95 inches thick, 10 inches wide, 7.28 inches deep. Netflix streaming-only subscriptions coming 'in the future'
This news may not be a surprise, given the huge success of Netflix's Watch Instantly streaming service, which had been activated over 1 million times on Xbox Live the last time we checked -- accounting for about 10 percent of its subscriptions. Microsoft files patent lawsuit against TomTom over Linux-based GPS systems

Leaked Snow Leopard screenshots and video show new Stacks, install options
We haven't seen too many Snow Leopard screenshots leak out, but it looks like a few more have finally surfaced, and they seem to show some interesting -- if minor -- interface enhancements. Most notably, Stacks now allows nested browsing, so if you click on a folder in the stack view, the old stack drops back and you can navigate the folder contents -- the old way just opened a Finder window. Other improvements include a Put Back menu item for accidentally-trashed items, a redesigned Keyboard Shortcuts prefpane that might encourage people to actually use it, and what looks like a welcome new installer option to only install printer drivers for printers that have been used with your machine.
