Buffalo intros SHD-NSUM series SSDs with USB and SATA-II interfaces
Internal SSD drives generally aren't the most exciting devices out there, apart from the fact they're SSDs, but Buffalo's new SHD-NSUM series of drives look to bit a bit of an exception, with each packing a microUSB port for some data transfers in a pinch in addition to the standard SATA-II interface. Otherwise, the drives are expectedly pretty standard fare, with Buffalo promising that they're 30% faster than a standard hard drive, and offering them in the usual 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities. No word on a 'release round here just yet, but those in Japan should be able to pick 'em up in March for between $120 and $390.[Via

Pioneer Europe intros first 8X Blu-ray writer
Pioneer Europe on Wednesday announced it is shipping its BDR-203BK Blu-ray disc writer that is capable of recording single- and dual-layer BD-R discs at up to 8X speeds. Apple Shareholder meeting: No news is good news?
There is literally nothing to report from the Apple Shareholder meeting. All four shareholder proposals were voted down. All board members were re-elected.
No one said anything about Stevo - except that he is on track to come back in June. As news was getting worse and worse at the beginning of the year a 'status quo' is actually a welcome relief, right? Three months to go?

Amazon may sell just 500K Kindles this year

Softbank offers free iPhones in Japan
Softbank has announced a promotion that will allow customers in Japan to receive free 3G iPhones when signing up for a two-year contract. The 8GB version is available for free with a basic, premium or student plan. Cheaper Blu-ray? Sony, Panasonic, and Philips say it's coming, honestly
Look, we don't really "get" people who aren't willing to buy the latest and greatest thing regardless of the price and / or current economic state, but evidently there's a rather large sector still clinging to their antiquated DVD format. Blu-ray proponents Panasonic, Philips, and Sony are looking to change all that by knocking down the tab a few notches. The trio has revealed plans to form a single licensing firm for Blu-ray, which they anticipate will lower the cost of the license -- and therefore the retail price -- by "at least" 40 percent. They expect it'll amount to $9.50 for read-only BD player, $14 for a burner, 11 cents for read-only discs, 12 cents for BD-Rs, and 15 cents for BD-RE rewritable discs. In

Samsung's laptop-accompanying LapFit display gets reviewed
Samsung has certainly carved out a curious niche for itself with its new LapFit display, which not only competes with regular LCD monitors, but laptop stands that accomplish the same basic goal for a fraction of the price. Would you want a numerical row on your iPhone/iPod Touch keyboard?
iPhone Hacks shows a pretty ingenius idea, if only in concept - a hacked keyboard with the number row. The app is called 5-Row QWERTY Keyboard and is available through the Cydia repository. The question is: Would you use something like this? It could make typing quicker but will the error rate due to the close proximity of the keys increase beyond useful? PS3 price cut may be on the way very soon, says analyst
Mike Hickey, an analyst with Janco, says that a major price cut on the Playstation 3 could be on the way in the near, near future (like, in the next few days). Hickey claims that the price slash needs to be at least $100 to get the retail juice moving again, and that, failing that, Sony should expect to see its sales on the console continue to decline. Double-amputee New Zealander has mermaid dreams fulfilled
New Zealander Nadya Vessey -- who lost both of her legs to the knee when she was a child -- has just received a prosthesis that's pretty much unlike anything we've ever seen (outside of Splash). About two years ago, she approached Weta Workshop, who specialize in design and manufacturing of costumes and special effects (and have worked on projects such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy) to see if the company might be interested in making her a working, prostethic mermaid tail. Turns out they were, and they've just completed the final product. Apple TV: Mini-Update auf Version 2.3.1
Apple TV-Besitzer dürfen sich über ein Update für ihre Set-Top-Box freuen, so wird die kleine weiße Kiste mal wieder neu gebootet. Große Neuerungen bringt Version 2.3.1 allerdings nicht mit sich, Apple hat es bislang nicht einmal für nötig gehalten, die Liste der Apple TV Software Updates zu aktualisieren. Aber weiter im Text: Die einzige bislang entdeckte Neuerung ist der in den Netzwerkeinstellungen versteckte "Netzwerktest", diese Funktion sendet laut Erklärungstext Informationen zur Internetverbindung an Apple, um die Downloadleistung zu verbessern.
Das Update lässt sich wie gewohnt direkt von Apple TV aus über das Menü Einstellungen starten - eine Internetverbindung ist natürlich Voraussetzung.

Toshiba shows off 32nm NAND flash chips, promises to go smaller
32nm NAND flash memory may not seem like a huge leap over some of the current 34nm chips out there, but Toshiba seems to be able to appreciate the little things in life, and it's certainly found plenty to boast about with its latest chips here. Adobe addresses several Flash vulnerabilities
Adobe has patched multiple exploit holes present within recent versions of Flash, a company security bulletin informs. The vulnerabilities primarily affect Mac and Windows editions of Flash software at or below v10.0.12.36, as well as the Linux Flash Player starting with v10.0.15.3; the principal exploit involves luring people into loading a malicious SWF file, which exposes a computer to hacking

Yep, the North American version of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is now on sale for $399 at the flagship store in NYC, just as we'd heard. (Chicago doesn't seem to have them yet but we're sure that'll change soon.) Sure, you've been able to score a $349 Euro unit for a while now, but for an extra 50 bones the NAM version does US 3G on AT&T, and we know you like that 3G action. Benchmarks: Safari 4 deklassiert Chrome und Firefox

Panasonic's latest Toughbook 30 unboxing and hands-on
In preparation for a feature on rugged, semi-rugged, and generally brawny laptops that should be appearing here in the coming weeks, Panasonic was kind enough to send us a little overnight love in the form of a Toughbook 30. That it was packaged in a box labeled "handle with care" that was itself bundled in another box full of foam peanuts didn't exactly make us think "durable," but as soon as we got our hands on that magnesium alloy case with its rubberized edges we knew we were dealing with a serious laptop. Apple hat heute die webbasierenden MobileMe Services aktualisiert. Gleich bei der Login-Seite fallen erste Neuerungen auf, wurde diese doch neu gestaltet. Die genauen Änderungen hat Apple in einem Support-Dokument zusammengefasst. Primär wurden Mail, die Kontakte, der Kalender und die Gallery überarbeitet.
Gleichzeitig hat Apple auch ein neues Apple-TV-Update freigegeben. Die aktuelle Software-Version trägt somit die Versionsnummer 2.3.1.

PopCap ports Peggle Nights to Mac
Developer PopCap says it has released a Mac port of Peggle Nights, its puzzle game sequel. Similar to the classic Breakout, players attempt to clear bricks out of a series of screens using a bouncing metal ball, which must avoid obstacles and be shot precisely to maximize combos. Heute morgen brachte der DHL-Bote ein nicht gerade kleines Paket vorbei (Leser unseres Twitter-Streams haben es bereits gesehen), in dem ein nagelneues 24″ LED Cinema Display steckte. Leider nur testweise haben wir dieses herrliche Gerät jetzt für die nächsten zwei Wochen zum Ausprobieren da.

Microsoft bringt IE8-Update für Windows 7
Microsoft hat ein Update für die Betaversion des Internet Explorer 8 unter Windows 7 veröffentlicht, das die Stabilität des Browsers verbessern soll. Der Patch liefert nach Auskunft von Herman Ng, Program Manager für den Internet Explorer, einige Verbesserungen, die bereits im Release Candidate des IE8 enthalten sind. Studie: Zahl der IPTV-Kunden steigt bis 2013 auf 5 Millionen
Der Markt für IPTV in Deutschland wird in den kommenden fünf Jahren stärker wachsen als bisher prognostiziert. Laut einer Untersuchung von Detecon International ist bereits 2013 mit Überschreiten der Grenze von fünf Millionen Nutzern zu rechnen. Im Jahr 2011 sollen es bereits 2,5 Millionen Kunden sein. Seagate drops patent suit againt SSD maker STEC, runs home crying
Well, that was pretty anticlimactic. Seagate, which filed suit against SSD-maker STEC back in April -- claiming the company infringed on four of its patents for SSD interfaces -- in March after talking quite a sizeable game about similar possible actions against the big boys (Intel and Samsung), has just dropped the claim. Seagate said that the case against STEC was "no longer worth pursuing" because economic conditions are now so bad that STEC isn't really selling many of the SSDs in question. Well, what do we have here? Dell's own website has outed a new Studio XPS 435. Here's the specs for its supremum configuration: a 3.2GHz Intel Core i7 processor extreme edition on a X58 chipset, up to 24GB DDR3 SDRAM and 4.5 TB with three hard drive bays, ATI Radeon HD4870, Blu-ray disc drive, 15-in-1 card reader, and eight USB 2.0 ports. Whoever put together GiPhone F5 seems to have done a pretty good job of mimicking the iPhone's UI, but other than that the deets are rather sketchy. This bad boy seems to be a 3G handset with a capacitive 3.2-inch multitouch screen, Bluetooth, "kinds of games," and up to 16GB internal memory. Those AA alkaline- and lithium-powered phone chargers are a totally handy (and relatively inexpensive) thing to throw into a bag and carry around in the event -- the incredibly likely event -- that you end up running your set dry at one time or another, but there's a small problem: those AAs don't go very far.
