Toshiba to ship 32nm NAND Flash in fall, 2Xnm by '11
Toshiba has shown a 300mm wafer with 32nm, 32-gigabit (4GB) NAND flash memory chips at the recent International Nanotechnology Exhibition & Conference. Dell sees sales growth for Mini 9s with Ubuntu

Telekom: Festnetz und Mobilfunk bald wieder vereint

MITRE develops hemispheric camera for visual telepresence
You have no idea how many times we've caught ourselves piloting prototype unmanned weapons platforms through hostile urban environments and thought, "this route is too complex, and this vision system too cumbersome to use -- there has got to be a better way." Well, it looks like the folks at MITRE have heard our call and replied with something called the Immersive Vision System. Currently in development, the heart of the thing is a hemispherical camera -- actually a number of stationary cameras that creates a video image that covers all 360 degrees horizontally and a none-too-shabby 270 degrees vertically. Clemson develops ballin' system to measure slam dunk intensity
For those of you who think knowing the miles per hour of each pitch the best part of a baseball game -- and sometimes, it really is -- Clemson University civil engineering professor Scott Schiff and his students have created a system that'll measure the force of the dunks and display it on the overhead screens instantly. In one match against East Carolina, Clemson forward Raymond Sykes managed a dunk that measured 30 G's -- which we're told is mighty impressive, but really, we don't have much comparison at this point. The team hopes its system gets adopted for other venues, and for sake of having more excuses to stare at the giant TVs and not the court, we hope so, too. Dell now taking Mini 10 orders, sort of
Dell may not be taking orders for the new Mini 10 on its website until February 26th, but it looks like those not willing to go the QVC route can now at least get an order in over the phone, with a few significant limitations. According to one MyDellMini forum user that opted for that route, Dell is only offering one configuration for $449, which doesn't include GPS or that promised built-in TV tuner, and is available in black only. News: eBay pulls pre-release iPod auction at Apple’s request
An auction by former Apple employee Mike Evangelist for a pre-release first-generation iPod was posted on eBay Sunday, then removed today at Apple’s request. According to Evangelist, the iPod was acquired while he was at Apple as part of an internal testing program, and never exchanged for a final released version. Sony puts the kibosh on Go!Messenger for PSP
Well, kids -- if you've been using Sony's Go!Messenger service (all three of you), we have some sad news. It looks like the company will be putting the brakes on the thing, citing lack of consumer interest. "Although Go!Messenger brought innovative communications features to the PSP community, the service has not developed the base of users" Sony was hoping for, reports GameIndustry.biz. German Mac cloners: "We know our product won't last long"
We knew the loophole in German contract law that would-be Mac cloners HyperMegaNet claimed exempted them from the OS X EULA was too good to be true, and it sounds like they do too: in an interview with the New York Times, owner Dirk Bloessl says that although he doesn't "fear Apple," all Cupertino needs to do to shut his PearC machines down is label the Leopard retail box "to be installed only on a Mac" or even just point out that the license is available on the Apple website. Intel rips into NVIDIA's Ion platform
Intel and NVIDIA aren't exactly hiding their differences with each other these days, and it doesn't look like that's about to change anytime soon, especially when it comes to NVIDIA's turf-encroaching Ion platform. Apple hat in den USA ein neues Feature namens iTunes Pass eingeführt. Den Start macht das für April angekündigte Depeche Mode-Album Sounds Of The Universe. Wer das Album zum erhöhten Preis von 18,99 Dollar vorbestellt, erhält über 15 Wochen hinweg regelmäßig Bonus-Material wie Single-Mixes und Musikvideos. Sobald neue Downloads bereit stehen, werden die iTunes Pass-Besitzer per E-Mail darüber informiert.
Im deutschen iTunes Store gibt es bislang keine vergleichbaren Angebote, das Depeche Mode-Album ist hier nur normal vorbestellbar. Eine deutschsprachige Infoseite zum iTunes Pass lässt aber darauf schließen, dass der neue Service nicht nur auf die USA begrenzt wird.

Apple launches iTunes Pass content
Apple has introduced the concept of the iTunes Pass, a new shopping option in the music section of the iTunes Store. The Pass automatically subscribes a person to all of the tracks and videos in a particular collection, downloading existing material and anything new as it becomes available. Apple notes that all the material provided in a Pass is DRM-free, and encoded with 256kbps AAC audio.

Laut Apple läd Safari 4 Websites dank der neuen «Nitro Engine» um den Faktor 4,2 mal schneller als Safari 3 und stellt somit neue Geschwindigkeitsrekorde auf. Ruslan Kogan, the Australian who built up our hopes only to let them down recently with his make believe Agora, is back with more outlandish promises, and for whatever reason, we think he actually expects us to just believe him this time. X11 on G1 hack is for those who like a little extra OS in their OS
Android may be doing its best to exterminate Linux on the mobile platform, but a dedicated group of fans is doing its best to keep it alive and on the move. Tomtom rutscht durch Tele-Atlas-Kauf in die Verlustzone

Studie warnt vor Datendiebstählen durch Ex-Mitarbeiter
Eine Studie des Ponemon Institute hat ergeben, dass unter ehemaligen Mitarbeitern Datendiebstähle weit verbreitet sind. FEC bringt IPSec-Client mit Budgetkontrolle

Bereits zur Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas zu Beginn des Jahres hatte MSI das X320/X340 ausgestellt. Analyst Brian Marshall von Broadpoint AmTech hält ein Apple Netbook trotz der Dementi für durchaus möglich. You what comes with exclusivity? Price gouging. Word has it that Orange's little European exclusive on LG's touch-screen G910 watchphone with HSDPA data will result in a £1,000 / €1,144 price per. Sinkende Apple-Aktie bloß Überreaktion?
Der Blick auf den Aktienmarkt sorgt derzeit selten für gute Laune und auch das Apple-Papier hat es in der vergangenen Woche einmal mehr erwischt. Grund hierfür war unter anderem ein Bericht der Marktforscher von NPD, die einen Rückgang der Mac-Verkäufe im Januar um 6 Prozent sowie einen Marktanteilsverlust von 16,4 auf 13,7 Prozent feststellten. Analysten werten den Fall des Aktienkurses jedoch als Überreaktion, allen voran nennt Seeking Alpha Gründe dafür, gerade jetzt an Apple zu glauben.

Finally, take that optical drive out of that unibody and put in another HDD
Frankly, since the MacBook Air was released, we've been questioning the validity of the internal optical drive in our MacBooks. Really, we need that thing once or twice a month, if at all, with the other options out there. USB sticks for data transfer, the Internet for 700MB movies and perhaps an external DVD for the occasional software install (and hopefully rare OS reinstall). Otherwise that thing is just taking up a lot of space and gathering dust as a relic of the past in our Unibody MacBooks.
The good news is that today, MCE has a solution for that wasted space. They simply take your DVD-R and put it in a USB case, then put in your MacBook another hard drive. Therefore you can technically have up to 1 Tb of storage with the Unibody MacBook with two 500GB of hard drive space.

Micron Technology hat die Einstellung der Fertigung von 200-Millimeter-Wafern in seinem Werk im US-Bundesstaat Idaho angekündigt. Charles Mangin wollte sein von 1978 stammende Apple Disk II Laufwerk nicht entsorgen. Von den Ausmaßen her größer als ein Mac mini kam ihm die Idee, den Mac mini doch einfach in das Gehäuse des Apple Disk II einzubauen. Das Ergebnis kann sich sehen lassen. Medtronic's implantable OCD treatment okayed by FDA
Looks like those brain pacemaker researchers are a bit late on this one, as folks at Medtronic are apt to get the jump on advanced OCD treatment given a recent FDA approval of their device. Finally, take that optical drive out of that unibody and put in another HDD
Frankly, since the MacBook Air was released, we've been questioning the validity of the internal optical drive in our MacBooks. Really, we need that thing once or twice a month, if at all, with the other options out there. USB sticks for data transfer, the Internet for 700MB movies and perhaps an external DVD for the occasional software install (and hopefully rare OS reinstall). Otherwise that thing is just taking up a lot of space and gathering dust as a relic of the past in our Unibody MacBooks.
The good news is that today, MCE has a solution for that wasted space. The simply take your DVD-R and put it in a USB case, then put in your MacBook another hard drive. Therefore you can technically have up to 1 Tb of storage with the Unibody MacBook with two 500GB of hard drive space.

NEDO's Advanced Robotics project enters second phase, boasts totally sweet bots
NEDO, an administrative institute in Japan, has been working on what it calls the "Project for Strategic Development of Advanced Robotics Elemental Technologies" since 2006. The project has now entered its second phase, and boasts some pretty impressive looking bots. Murata Machinery's robotic delivery system (pictured above) which is designed to help in places like hospitals, delivering medications late at night so that nurses and aids don't have to spend a lot of time on such tasks. The company plans to test it and monitor the bot in use at hospitals in order to verify its effectiveness. As we've seen with the MacBook Air, Apple clearly feels there are a select group of you out there who can live without an optical drive on your laptop. LG and Samsung sue Kodak after Kodak sues Samsung and LG
LG, Samsung and Kodak have already gotten themselves into quite a legal tangle, but things have really come full circle in the last few days, with both Samsung and LG filing suits at the International Trade Commission over some alleged patent infringment on Kodak's part. This, of course, follows Kodak's complaints that both Samsung and LG were infringing on its patents, which the ITC is now apparently investigating in full. Forthcoming UMID M2 already dancing on M1's spotlight
In today's world, it's a pretty safe bet that revision two is already on the drawing board by the time revision one hits the market. That said, it's still somewhat embarrassing for UMID that we already have leaked proof that the M2 is on the way to replace the just-barely-official M1. Amazon Kindle 2's now shipping
According to Gizmodo and Engadget, the first Kindle 2s are now shipping to their customers for an on time delivery date of Tuesday, February 24th. 9to5mac affiliate, Amazon is the only place you can get a Kindle and the going price is $359. Plex Media Center blows us away with App Store
Media Centers on the Mac have been pretty hit or miss so far. We've been playing with a few of them, along with Front Row and nothing has been really "sticky". One we're a huge fan of is open source Plex. It has been improving incrementally for the past year since it branched off from XBMC and basically does everything Apple's Front Row does, but better. You can use an Apple remote or there's built-in support for Harmony remotes. Plus it does a bunch of other interesting stuff like play 1080P movies in formats other than MP4 and MOV, streams weather information to your media center Mac, and it is skinnable.
But then something amazing happened.
Over the weekend we hit the 0.7.8 Beta version and ..erm.. Boom! They now have an App store! These apps bring together a lot of what you'd want in a media center. Obviously, you want to pick up Hulu, CNN, CBS

Turn your iPod touch into a phone with $15 mic
The second generation iPod Touch (and 4G Nano) came with microphone-in headphone jacks. Obviously you could throw some iPhone headphones in there and start yapping on VoIP apps like Truphone and Fring. Olympus still hasn't let out any sort of official word on a release date for it hotly-anticipated Micro Four Thirds cameras, but the company has just announced two new less-than-anticipated models, which will apparently each be exclusive to UK retailer Jessops for the time being. On the higher end of the range is the 12-megapixel Olympus X-915 (pictured above), which packs an ample 5x optical zoom, a 2.7-inch "hypercrystal" LCD, image stabilization, smile recognition, and a price tag of £299 (or about $435). Öffentliche Beta von Quake Live ab heute
Im Laufe des heutigen Tages wird Id Software die öffentliche Beta von Quake Live, einer im Browser spielbaren Version der Ego-Shooter-Reihe Quake, online stellen. Quake Live basiert auf dem im Dezember 1999 erschienen Quake III Arena und wird für jedermann kostenlos zugänglich sein.
