NEC's MultiSync X461UN LCD - 645 square feet, 46 inches at a time
Sure, a 30-inch display is one thing, but what do you do when you want a truly immersive computing experience? Like, "your entire apartment" immersive? NEC's MultiSync X461UN is a 46-inch LCD monitor with an ultra-thin (7.3mm) screen bezel designed specifically for large format commercial signage. It can be used alone or configured in up to 10 x 10 matrices for a total video surface of about 645 square feet. That's a lot of signage! PSP hits Europe in three more colors
Sure, fashion is usually the first to go during tough times, but Sony's keeping its head up during the struggle, releasing the European PSP in three more colors to compliment those Japanese Carnival Colors we saw last week. Look, we feel your pain. There's about a gazillion options when it comes to portable hard drives, but the iDrive Portable actually does differentiate itself from the masses in one particularly useful way. Days of Thunder: Fehlerhaft aber Sonderpreis

Canon prices, dates 2009 camcorders
Canon today followed up on promises made at CES by setting out launch details for its 2009 camcorders. The VIXIA series HD line has been pushed back slightly and will see the flash-based HF S100 and HF S10 sell for $1,100 and $1,300 respectively when they ship in early March. IntoMobile really, really believes there is a big future in multi-core iPhones. We agree, but just aren't sure the battery technology is there yet (for June iPhones that are running around South San Francisco). Samsung SyncMaster U70 is a really great idea - not for Mac yet
So you've probably heard of Samsung's line of USB bus monitors. It is a pretty cool technology without much of an application (slow, overpriced monitors at regular sizes) - until now. The SyncMaster U70 is a small, photo frame styled display that plugs directly into the USB port of the computer. No other wires necessary, it is also powered through USB. The SyncMaster U70 is just 7-inches, running at 800 x 480 resolution.

Windows 7 multitouch: it's a gimmick (for now)
We've spent some time with Windows 7 Beta's new touch and multitouch features this week, and came away largely disappointed. It's not that they don't work, at least on occasion, it's that they don't really provide a comprehensive or pleasurable method for using a computer. The primary enhancements to the OS that really make touch usage possible include a taller taskbar, pinch to zoom and tap-and-drag scrolling. Looking for a surefire conversation piece or guaranteed nightmares for weeks on end? Then you may want to take up Little Island's offer to create a tiny, custom robot version of you, which can apparently even be used as a VoIP phone of sorts to freak out family members when you're away. LaserPup trains for battle with Laser Cats
We don't really know where to begin. LaserPup involves shooting a laser at a dog over the internet, nothing more, nothing less, but somehow it transcends traditionally pointless moddery and becomes something so much greater. Maybe it's because you shoot a dog with a laser over the internet. MIT concocts wearable "sixth sense" device, Bruce Willis is like "what?"
We've nothing but respect for the researchers, engineers and all around brainacs that call MIT home, but unless our minds are simply too feeble to grasp the connection here, we can't figure how this "sixth sense" device actually relates to one of Bruce Willis' most well known films. Snow Leopard gets hip to CoreLocation and multitouch
We're in the Q1 2009, folks, and while we'd love to believe that the release of Snow Leopard is imminent, it looks like all we'll have to be sustained by is rumors and innuendo for the time being. According to "insiders" at, well, Apple Insider, the eagerly awaited operating system will be taking some cues from the iPhone, adding both CoreLocation and opening up the multitouch trackpad to third-party developers. David Reeves drops hint of Sony's shift to 45nm PS3s
It's no secret that Sony has been eyeing a shift to 45nm Cell processors in the PS3 sooner or later, but the always talkative David Reeves (Sony Europe's president) has now finally dropped a bit more specificity on the matter, while naturally still leaving the company quite a bit of wiggle room. Speaking to The Guardian newspaper, Reeves said that Sony is "always looking at ways to reduce costs," and that one of those measures is "replacing the current 65 nanometer Cell chip with a 45 nanometer one probably in middle of year." Smartphones trotzen schwächelndem Handy-Markt

Samsung's SyncMaster U70 is 7-inches of extra real estate
We can't get enough of these cute, fuzzy little add-on displays, and Samsung's chipping in with the new U70 SyncMaster unit which just hit Korea, and is already available in Europe. The 7-inch display runs at a fairly standard 800 x 480 resolution, and plugs into a single USB port for power and image. It's got 200 nits of brightness, a 400:1 contrast ratio and a 140 degree viewing angle, but like most of these displays is unfortunately Windows-only at the moment. Regelmäßig werden Umfragen durchgeführt, die ermitteln sollen, welche Käufe die Konsumenten in der nächsten Zeit planen und welche Marken bevorzugt werden. Der Anteil derer, die innerhalb der nächsten 90 Tage einen neuen Computer kaufen wollen, sank von 8 Prozent Ende des vergangenen Jahres auf jetzt 6 Prozent. Lenovo rutscht in die Verlustzone und tauscht CEO aus
Lenovo hat im dritten Quartal des Fiskaljahres 2009 (bis 31. Dezember) einen Nettoverlust von 97 Millionen Dollar oder 1,09 US-Cent je Aktie hinnehmen müssen. Eine Umfrage von ChangeWave hat eine sinkende Nachfrage nach Apple-Notebooks ermittelt. Demnach wollen nur noch 27 Prozent der Befragten, die in den nächsten 90 Tagen den Kauf eines Notebooks planen, ein Macbook erwerben. Whyte hat die für diesen Monat angekündigte Verhandlung der Patentklagen von Rambus gegen Micron Technology, Hynix Semiconductor, Nanya Technology und Samsung Electronics auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben. Der Richter reagierte damit auf ein Urteil seiner Kollegin Sue Robinson aus dem US-Bundesstaat Delaware, wonach Rambus seine Pflichten zur Aufbewahrung möglicher Beweismittel "vorsätzlich oder fahrlässig" verletzt haben soll. VIA: Umsätze brechen im Januar um 61 Prozent ein
Die Umsätze des Chipherstellers VIA Technologies sind im letzten Monat um 61,33 Prozent eingebrochen. Gegenüber Januar 2008 sanken die Einnahmen des Unternehmens von 28,226 Millionen Dollar auf 10,916 Millionen Dollar. Im Vergleich zu Dezember 2008 ging der Umsatz um 16,63 Prozent zurück.

Bundesregierung beschließt De-Mail-Adressen
Ab 2010 sollen so genannte Bürgerportale einen vertrauenswürdigeren Geschäftsverkehr im Internet ermöglichen. Die Bundesregierung hat jetzt einen Gesetzentwurf (PDF) dazu verabschiedet. Alcatel-Lucent meldet 3,9 Milliarden Euro Nettoverlust

Boss Autoradio: iPod hinter der Frontblende
Boss Audio war erst kürzlich mit der Ankündigung eines Autoradios mit ausfahrbarem iPod-Dock hier in unseren News, jetzt hat der Hersteller ein weiteres, iPod-kompatibles Modell angekündigt.
Ab Ende Februar soll das neue Modell wahlweise mit oder ohne Bluetooth-Freisprechfunktion erhältlich sein, das iPod-Dock verbirgt sich bei beiden Ausführungen hinter dem abnehmbaren Bedienteil des Geräts.

Benennt Nvidia erneut Grafikkarten um?
Die eigenen Produkte umzubenennen und in einem unveränderten Zustand auf den Markt zu bringen, scheint der neueste Schrei zu sein. So wurde zum Beispiel aus der GeForce 8800 GS die GeForce 9600 GSO, wobei die Hardware identisch geblieben ist. Cisco übertrifft Erwartungen trotz Umsatzrückgang
Cisco hat gestern Abend die Zahlen für das zweite Quartal seines Geschäfstjahres vorgelegt. Mit Einnahmen von 1,9 Milliarden oder 32 Cent pro Aktie und Verkaufserlösen von 9,1 Milliarden Dollar übertraf der Netzwerkausrüster ganz knapp die Erwartungen der Wall Street. Der Umsatz ging im Vergleich zum selben Quartal des Vorjahres um 7,5 Prozent zurück, der Gewinn (Non-GAAP) liegt 21,5 Prozent unter dem des Vergleichsquartals. Dennoch gewann die Aktie leicht und schloß bei 15,84 Dollar. Im nachbörslichen Handel setzte sich der Aufwärtstrend fort.

AOLs Werbeumsätze brechen weiter ein
Time Warner hat bei der Bekanntgabe seiner aktuellen Wirtschaftszahlen auch das Ergebnis für das vierte Quartal seines Tochterunternehmens AOL veröffentlicht. Demnach sind die Werbeeinnahmen von AOL zwischen Oktober und Dezember um 18 Prozent eingebrochen. Die Umsätze aus Internetanschlüssen sanken um 27 Prozent. Insgesamt setzte der Konzern im vierten Quartal mit 968 Millionen Dollar 23 Prozent weniger um als im letzten Vierteljahr 2007.

Recompute: a closer look at the sustainable, cardboard PC
We just recently saw some of the entries in the Greener Gadgets Design Competition that's happening in New York on February 27th. The designer of one of those entries, the cardboard-housed Recompute, was kind enough to contact us with some more detail about his computer, including a few specs. The fully functional PC houses all off-the-shelf components, including an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, and 2GB of RAM. With about three weeks left to go, the Progressive Automotive X-Prize has already got 25 submissions (20 names have been publicly released) with creators ranging from college students to large auto makers already in the game. WiiGator GameCube launcher promises to play "backups" sans modchip
Details are pretty light on this one at the moment, but a couple of videos have cropped up in recent days demoing the as yet unreleased WiiGator GameCube Backup Launcher, which promises to let folks play GameCube "backup" copies on their Wii without a modchip. From OSXHints comes a very interesting patch for those of you rolling with G4s. This one allows you to (slowly) run iMovie '09 on your elder hardware.
To patch iMovie '09 so that it will run on a PowerPC G4, Control-click on iMovie and pick Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. In the new window that appears, navigate into Contents » MacOS. Now you'll need a hex editor such as the free HexEdit; once you have that, edit the file iMovie in the MacOS folder.
Use the File » Go To Address function in HexEdit to go to the following addresses, and replace each existing entry at those addresses (7C 08 02 A6) with 4E 80 00 20. The addresses are 15fb9c,

Meizu M8 gets English-language video review
The Meizu M8 has been caught on camera plenty of times before, but we can't recall seeing an English-language version until now. One tester at MP4 Nation has managed to get some hands-on time with the unabashed iPhone doppelganger, and calls the audio and video playback quality a disappointment, especially given the powerful Samsung ARM CPU inside. As he eloquently puts it, "cheap MP4 players can do a better job." Ouch. Video resizing also seems to be poorly implemented, cutting off the edges when it doesn't match the 3:2 aspect ratio. Norway backs down from DRM dispute with Apple

Phone shipments plunge 12.6 percent year over year in Q4 '08
IDC's now assembled a comprehensive look at the phone biz in 2008, and as you might expect, it's not exactly the most amazing year on record. Actually, when you take the year as a whole, shipments totaled a whopping 1.18 billion handsets -- a 3.5 percent boost over 2007 -- but the fourth quarter was downright brutal, seeing a 12.6 percent contraction over the same period a year prior.
