Norwegische Verbraucherschützer lassen von iTunes-DRM ab
Keinen Ärger hat Apple nach dem Wegfall des DRM von norwegischen Verbraucherschützern mehr zu befürchten. Die Verbraucherschützer hatten Apple lange damit gedroht, die Verbindung von iTunes und iPod auf dem Rechtsweg zu stoppen. Ähnliche Beschwerden hatten auch Gruppen in Deutschland und Frankreich geäußert. Mit dem auf der Macworld bekanntgegebenen Wegfall des DRM auf Musiktitel ist diesen Beschwerden nun die Grundlage entzogen.

RC33 G1 firmware update gets detailed in full
We've already heard of one big new feature included in the RC33 firmware update for the G1, but with the update now trickling out into the wild, we've finally got the complete rundown of what's been added and fixed. T-Mobile tops J.D. Power's customer care survey
Wireless provider T-Mobile topped the rankings in the J.D. GarageBand '09 aktualisiert
Kaum ausgeliefert, gibt es schon ein Update für GarageBand auf die Version 5.0.1. Viele Worte verliert Apple nicht über das Update, neben der üblichen allgemeinen Verbesserung der Stabilität sollen vor allem Probleme beim Herunterladen der Videos aus dem GarageBand-Store behoben worden sein. 17-inch MacBook Pro delayed two weeks
Bad news for those of you waiting on pins and needles for the 17-inch MacBook Pro -- it's been delayed to at least February 19th. According to an email Apple's sending to pre-order customers, "wrapping up the new 17-inch MacBook Pro is taking a few days longer than we projected," and orders won't ship for another two weeks. German company joins in Mac cloning efforts
Another Mac clone builder has appeared in spite of questionable legality, a publication reports. Based in Germany, a company known as HyperMegaNet UG has begun selling the PearC line, on which shoppers can have Mac OS X Leopard installed, or alternately Windows Vista or XP. The line is divided into Starter, Advanced and Professional models, with base prices ranging from €499 to €1,499.

Eco-friendly Moto W233 ships for T-Mobile
The previously announced Motorola W233 Renew handset is now available for purchase at wireless provider T-Mobile for about $10 on a two-year contract. The W233 Renew is the first handset to use recycled plastics in the construction of its housing that includes recycled water bottles. News: RapidRepair offers 240GB 5G iPod drive upgrade
RapidRepair has posted a page touting a 240GB hard drive upgrade for the fifth-generation iPod. It's official: DTV "hard date" moved to June 12
After much wrangling, the DTV Delay Act has worked its way through the House of Representatives and will certainly be signed by President Obama, changing the cutoff date for analog broadcasts from February 17 to June 12. Don't expect this to bring a sudden end to digital TV confusion, since stations can switch prior to that date, and according to the FCC up to 61% will be able to. Mission One electric motorcycle boasts 150 MPH top speed, extreme price tag
The Mission One EV electric sports bike got a proper unveiling at this week's Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) conference, and boy does this baby exude power. Mission Motors says the motorcycle's got an 150 MPH top speed and 100 foot-pounds of torque at any point between 0 and 6,500 RPM. Rice University rolls out new and improved "nanocar"
Nano-sized letters are one thing, but nothing impresses the nanotechnology community like creepy crawly nanotech, and some researchers from Rice University look to have fully delivered on that point with their latest so-called "nanocar." RapidRepair offers 240GB upgrade for video iPods
Online retailer RapidRepair will soon offer an upgraded 240GB hard drive for first- and second-generation video iPods. The upgrade comes in the form of a 1.8-inch drive from Toshiba, introduced last year. The dual-platter drive has a PATA interface and spins at a comparatively fast 4,200rpm.

It looks like Acer's 10-inch Aspire One D150 is getting set for a US debut, as it just popped up in the FCC's all-knowing database. Google Latitude coming to other devices, iPhone included
T-Mobile's decision to bundle Google's Latitude location-tracking service into the RC33 G1 update may have gotten all the attention this morning, but if you've got a BlackBerry, Window Mobile or S60 device, you can start oversharing right away -- Latitude is built into the newest version of the Google Maps app. Not only that, but it looks like iPhone owners will be able to get in on the fun soon -- Google says it's working on a Latitude app that will "hopefully" be available shortly. Tazzari Zero's preliminary specs released
Italian industrial firm Tazzari has announced preliminary specs and launched a new website for its plug-in auto, the Zero. Measuring 113.5 inches long and sporting 15-inch wheels, the city-bound electric car weighs in at 1,200 pounds -- 312 of that from the lithium-ion Fe battery. It'll handle 88 miles with a full charge that takes 9 hours to fill, but you can reportedly juice up to 80% in just 50 minutes. Top speed is 56 MPH, so don't expect to be driving this on the highway, and it can go from 0 to 31 in under 5 seconds. The company says it's due out later this year in Europe and the Carribean for less than 20,000 Euros ($25,760), and yes, there's a dozen Crayola-inspired colors available. News: Norway consumer advocate drops iTunes complaint
Following three years of attempts to sanction Apple for anti-competitive iTunes practices, Norwegian Consumer Ombudsman Bjorn Erik Thon has said he is dropping a complaint against iTunes before the company’s Market Council, due to Apple’s announcement that all music on iTunes Store will be available DRM-free as of April. “We have no reason to pursue them anymore,” Thom told AFP. iTunes no longer allows purchases outside of the motherland
According to Slashdot, that iTunes EULA aggreement that you just agreed to without reading contained some big changes for those of us who travel and live abroad:
"I just accepted the new terms of service for iTunes and found that I will no longer be allowed to access US iTunes outside of the United States. This may seem like no big deal but, I am a US citizen living abroad and I regularly purchase and view TV and movies from AppleTV. Not to mention US citizens just traveling abroad. Does anyone know if this has been enforced or have themselves been affected by this?"

Google Latitude coming soon to iPhone
Another day, another Google product for iPhone. This is another interesting one too. Google Latitude pulls your GPS data and allows you to share it with friends in a convenient map form. Potential for abuse? Possibly big. Potential to ruin teenagers lives, even bigger. No more of the ol' staying at the friends house while the friend is staying at yours but really you are both hangin' out at the lake. Sucks to be you kids!
Yes you can manually set your location or turn it off (see below)- but don't think you won't be able to tell the difference between movement and manual settings.

LG Arena KM900 gets further detailed
We've already gotten a pretty good look at LG's curiously familiar Arena KM900 phone, and we're now starting to get some more details as well, although LG is still managing to keep a few things under wraps for the presumably imminent announcement. AT&T may snap up ex-Verizon wireless
AT&T may end up acquiring some of the resources Verizon has to auction off to complete its buyout of Alltel, sources tell the Wall Street Journal. The iPhone-carrying provider is reportedly one of the stronger bidders for the estimated $3 billion in cellular coverage, spectrum and other assets that the US government has determined should be sold to competitors to maintain a level playing field.

MS laying down plans for SkyBox 1.5, 2.0?
In-depth plans for Microsoft's SkyBox sync service have been leaked, according to anonymous sources said to be "well-connected" to the matter. A v1.0 beta of the service is expected to go live in mid-February, and provide basic backup, restore, management and sharing functions for cellphone data. AT&T reportedly eyeing post-merger Verizon Wireless assets
As you may recall, one of the requirements that Verizon had to agree with in order to complete its little acquisition of Alltel was that it must offload some $3 billion in wireless assets to avoid becoming too monolithic, and it looks like there's already a number of bidders angling for a piece of the action. The biggest of those, by far, is AT&T, which is apparently looking to pick up as big a chunk of the assets as it is able to and, according to The Wall Street Journal, it's in a good position to do just that. Fuji expands A-series with A150 and A100 boringcams
Although we're expecting big things from FujiFilm's Super CCD EXR-packing F200, we can't say we're nearly as intrigued with the two new A-series compacts the company also saw fit to release this morning. The A100 and A150 are pretty much the basic kit you've come to expect at the bottom end of things: both have 10 megapixel sensors with ISO 1600 sensitivity, 3x optical zooms with image stabilization, face detection, QVGA video recording, and a bunch of scene modes that shouldn't be too hard to completely ignore. RIM reaches settlement with Ontario Securities Commission over backdating shenanigans
Gearing up to close another chapter in its tale of cooked books, RIM announced this week that the company and "certain of its officers and directors" have reached a settlement with the Ontario Securities Commission over backdating stock options. iTunes no longer allows purchases outside of the motherland
According to Slashdot, that iTunes EULA aggreement that you just agreed to without reading contained some big changes for those of us who travel and live abroad:
"I just accepted the new terms of service for iTunes and found that I will no longer be allowed to access US iTunes outside of the United States. This may seem like no big deal but, I am a US citizen living abroad and I regularly purchase and view TV and movies from AppleTV. Not to mention US citizens just traveling abroad. Does anyone know if this has been enforced or have themselves been affected by this?"
Obviously, Apple wants to sell as much media as possible and doesn't care if you are in St. Petersburg Florida or St. Petersburg, Russia. This has the entertainment industry written all over it. Perhaps this had something to do with the recent deals made for DRM-Free Music.

Palm Pre landing mid-March?
There's no shortage of disparate and sketchy launch date predictions for the Pre, but here's one with a little bit of meat to it. Boy Genius Report has a purported End Of Life list for Sprint, which lists the projected deaths of various phones, along with the planned replacement, with a bit of overlap in timing to keep things moving along smoothly. The Pre shows up as "target in-stock 3/15," replacing the Palm 755p, which is slated to fizzle out in late May. Electronic Arts streicht 1100 Jobs
Electronic Arts (EA) hat angekündigt, 1100 Stellen oder 11 Prozent seiner weltweiten Belegschaft einzusparen. Die Kündigungen sind Teil eines Programms, mit dem das Unternehmen im Laufe des Geschäftsjahres 2010 (bis 31. März 2010) seine Kosten um 500 Millionen Dollar senken will. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, wird Electronic Arts auch zwölf Standorte schließen und die Anzahl der angebotenen Produkte verringern. Ende Oktober hatte EA noch mit bis zu 580 Kündigungen gerechnet.

IBM: Super-Computer mit 20 Petaflops

Firefox 3.0.6 behebt Sicherheits- und Stabilitätsprobleme
Mozilla arbeitet derzeit an einer überarbeiteten Version von Firefox. Leider musste man vor kurzem die Veröffentlichung der finalen Version 3.1 im Zeitplan nach hinten schieben. Qimonda bekam 219 Millionen Euro vom Bund
Der Speicherchiphersteller Qimonda, der zuletzt 150 Millionen Euro aus dem sächsischen Landeshaushalt gefordert hatte, ist trotz massiver staatlicher Finanzhilfe in die Insolvenz geraten. Qimonda zeigt weltweit kleinsten DRAM-Chip
Qimonda hat heute den nach eigenen Angaben weltweit kleinsten 2-Gigabit-DRAM-Speicherchip vorgestellt. Der DDR3-DRAM-Chip basiert auf der von Qimonda entwickelten 46-Nanometer-Buried-Wordline-Technologie. Er hat eine Fläche von weniger als 55 Quadratmillimetern. Firefox 3.0.6 behebt Sicherheitslücken und erhöht Stabilität
Mozilla hat den Firefox in Version 3.0.6 veröffentlicht. Mit der neuen Version wurden insgesamt sechs Sicherheitslücken geschlossen, wobei drei kritischer Natur sind. So konnten zwei Sicherheitslücken zum Auslesen von sensiblen Daten missbraucht werden. Mit ClearCam ist eine iPhone-Software erschienen, welche die Erstellung hochauflösender Fotos mit dem iPhone erlaubt. Momentan lässt sich die Software aber nur für entsperrte iPhones laden. Mit CleanCam erstellt der Anwender in 2,5 Sekunden schnell hintereinander sechs Fotos der gleichen Szene. Anschließend wird aus diesen sechs Fotos das hochauflösende Foto berechnet. Olso rolls out biomethane-powered busses
The city of Oslo is getting down and dirty with a new scheme for its public transportation. Adding "minor modifications" to 80 of the city's public busses will allow them to run on biomethane fuel produced from raw sewage. The buses are apparently much quieter, and are more eco-friendly than biogas, with zero carbon emissions. The leader of the project, Ole Jakob Johansen, also says that the city should save about €.40 per liter on fueling the busses. Google Tasks: To-Do-Liste für iPhone und iPod touch
iPhone und iPod touch können ja viel, für die Verwaltung anstehender Aufgaben bringen die Geräte bislang allerdings keine vernünftige Lösung mit. Verschiedene im App Store erhältliche Programme springen hier in die Bresche, allerdings nicht immer ganz günstig.
Eine schicke, einfache und kostenlose Lösung gibt es nun von Google (Internetverbindung ist allerdings Voraussetzung). Mit Google Tasks lassen sich Aufgaben schnell und übersichtlich organisieren, sogar in verschiedene Listen aufteilen.

GarageBand '09: Kein Musikunterricht auf PowerPC-Macs
Bei jeder neuen Softwaregeneration werden die Mindestanforderungen an die Hardware etwas höher geschraubt, so dass dies wohl nur eine Frage der Zeit war: GarageBand ist nicht mehr vollständig auf PowerPC-Macs lauffähig. Die neuen "Artist Lessons", also der Musikunterricht an Gitarre und Keyboard unter der Anleitung diverser Musiker, verlangt nach einem Intel-Mac mit einem Dual-Core-Prozessor oder höher.

FujiFilm's 12 megapixel F200EXR camera promises a revolution, might just deliver
Meet the FujiFilm FinePix F200 EXR, the company's first camera to host its new 1/1.6-inch Super CCD EXR sensor revealed back in September. The sensor promises high resolution, high sensitivity, and a wide dynamic range without the noise typical of these compact shooters. Spec-wise, we're looking at a 12 megapixel resolution, 3-inch LCD, 28-mm wide-angle 5x zoom lens with CCD-shift stabilization, a 5fps burst mode and 640 x 480 video recording in AVI (Motion JPEG) format, support for SD/SDHC and xD Picture Card storage, and plenty of automatic shooting modes as well as manual control over the shutter speed and aperture. Erlaubt Apple bald Hintergrund-Anwendungen für das iPhone?
Ruhig ist es um den Push-Notifizierungsdienst geworden, der gebündelt Nachrichten sammeln und dann an das entsprechende iPhone weiterleiten sollte. Den ursprünglich für das iPhone OS 2.1 geplanten Dienst hatte Apple als Ersatz für Hintergrundanwendungen vorgesehen. OpenFrame and O2 caught canoodling in the wild
Our good friend Mr. BlurryCam managed to steady his (or her) hands a bit and snap a few shots of a working OpenFrame, complete with an on-screen widget indicating the multimedia phone's apparently found itself a home with European carrier O2. The documentary Welcome to Macintosh has reportedly received positive feedback and praise during a recent screening that included several Apple personalities. iBook G4 benchmarked against hackintosh netbook, comes out even
Apple's been pretty resistant to putting out an OS X netbook, and we might have an inkling why -- according to benchmarks run on a hackintosh'd MSI Wind variant, Apple's OS runs just about as well on your average 1.6GHz Atom / 1GB RAM machines as it does on a four-year-old iBook G4.
