Will Apple ever put Flash on the iPod/iPhone?
The news these days seems to go back and forth. Adobe says they are moving on Flash for the iPhone. Meanwhile Apple's Webkit team are working on ways around Flash using new CSS standards.
Apple, of course, has been silent on the matter. Last we heard, Steve Jobs said last year that Flash in its current form doesn't run well on the iPhone hardware and Flash Lite wasn't a compelling offer. Adobe plans to have Flash running at full speed on newer ARM hardware in the second half of this year, about the same time everyone expects some new iPhone hardware to come out. That mean

Google Books for iPhone adds 1.5 million reading choices to iPhone/iPod touch

Time Warner to offer data caps above 40GB limit
In response to complaints from unhappy customers, Time Warner plans to introduce broadband packages with data caps above the current 40GB limit that was applied to Beaumont, TX customers as part of a pilot program, according to the Associated Press. Intel 80GB SSD price cut by one-third, still very expensive
Looks like Intel is give some of its SSDs a more reasonable -- yet still very exorbitant -- price tag. The company has slashed the 2.5-inch 80GB X25-M from $595 in September to now $390. LG Arena confirmed, extra details slip
LG finished the week by validating rumors regarding the KM900 Arena on the company's official UK blog. ShareTool 1.2.6 adds VPN configuration, warnings

AT&T staff may strike over contract

New 3D software tracks peoples' location in buildings
It's not exactly the level of technology that'll cause Lucius Fox to storm out of a room, but this new so-called BEAM 3D mapping software developed by a pair of students from the Engineering College of Aarhus is still pretty impressive, and could be of real use to firefighters and others in an emergency. While complete details are a bit light, the software is apparently intended to be paired with a 3D sensor of some sort that's carried through a building by a firefighter or other individual, which relays information back to a handheld device that pinpoints the person's location. Communications Workers of America authorizes strike of 20,000 AT&T workers, could happen soon
It's been a little under the radar, but AT&T Mobility's been in contract talks with the Communications Workers of America on behalf of some 20,000 unionized workers, and things haven't been going so well -- in fact, the CWA just voted to authorize a strike if upcoming negotiations don't improve. The union's current contract actually expires tonight at midnight, but the strike won't take place until the union's executive board approves and the CWA president sets a date. For its part, AT&T says it maintains a good relationship with its unions -- it has more unionized workers than any other carrier -- and that the vote is just another part of the process, but that it's prepared for all contingencies, including a strike. HTC takes 17% year-on-year January sales hit
HTC confirmed its sensitivity to the poor world economy on Friday with word that it has taken a substantial blow to its sales in January. Although it had a healthy end of 2008 where its revenues were up 21.4 percent compared to holiday 2007, the company warns that its results in January are well off the same month a year before and dropped about 16.8 percent versus the same month a year earlier.

LCD "overdrive" gets explained, lamented
There's plenty of well known problems that plague LCD monitors, but the folks at bit-tech.net have set out to bring some attention to one of the decidedly lesser known issues, somewhat deceptively dubbed "overdrive." That is a technique some LCD manufactures use to artificially boost response times by increasing the voltage used to make liquid crystals change state, which does in fact increase the response time, but also has the nasty side effect of input lag and what's known as "inverse ghosting." Ottawa Apple Store due towards end of summer
Apple's planned Ottawa retail store should open its doors by the end of August, a reliable source tells MacNN. The store -- Apple's ninth in Canada and the first for the country's capital -- is at least expected to open before the end of 2009, one of only 25 new outlets scheduled worldwide this year. HP UK spurns Linux in its new netbook offerings
Looks like anyone in the U.K. hoping to buy a new HP netbook with Linux is going to be sorely disappointed. For reasons unknown, the company's decided not to offer the Mini 1000 or the Mini 2140 with a pre-install of Linux -- standard options for the U.S. versions of both. Current U.K. HP Linux offerings include the 2133, but it's an older model, so the lack of it for the newer models may signal a trend moving forward. Giant e-paper display spotted, ogled at Taiwanese book show
Now showing at a Taiwanese book expo: two gorgeous e-paper displays, one in black-and-white and one in color. The approximately 24-inch readers were created by Delta Electronics (no relation to the airliner) and are being used by a local newspaper publisher to survey attendees and gauge interest in their future use. While we're happy to eschew buttons for touchscreens on some things, we're still not entirely sold on the Harmony 1100's (relatively) minimalist design, an update to that display-focused layout first seen on the 1000. Most like to use remote controls without looking down, and that could be a bit of a challenge here. Microsoft insists it's not making a phone, rumored to be rebranding WinMo to "Windows Phone"

Intel stellt Chipproduktion in Shanghai ein

We've got ourselves some video of MIT's new "sixth sense" project, which really helps understand the concept. MIT basically plans to augment reality with a pendant picoprojector: hold up an object at the store and the device blasts relevant information onto it (like environmental stats, for instance), which can be browsed and manipulated with hand gestures. Nachdem zunächst bekannt wurde, dass einige Festplattenmodelle von Seagate Probleme mit ihrer Firmware hatten, die den Zugriff auf die Daten verhinderten, legte der Hersteller das eine oder andere Update vor. Intel bastelt an Nehelem-CPUs mit 10 Watt
Intels Core-2-Duo-Nachfolger ist bereits seit letztem Jahr auf dem Markt der Desktop-Rechner. Er heißt nun Core i7 und basiert auf dem schnellen Nehalem-Kern, der man in 45nm fertigt. Microsoft hat angekündigt, für den Release Candidate von Windows 7 erneut die Benutzerkontensteuerung (UAC) zu überarbeiten. Das Rennen um die DVD-Nachfolge entschied die Blu-ray für sich. Die Filmstudios sprachen sich gegen die HD DVD aus. Infineon schreibt weiterhin hohe Verluste
Infineon leidet weiterhin unter der Wirtschaftskrise und der Insolvenz seiner Speicherchip-Tochter Qimonda. Im ersten Geschäftsquartal 2009 (bis 31. Dezember) brach der Umsatz gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres um 24 Prozent auf 830 Millionen Euro ein. Im Vergleich zum Vorquartal ging der Umsatz um 28 Prozent zurück. Der Core-i7-Prozessor von Intel (ComputerBase-Test) ist mittlerweile auf dem Markt seit einiger zeit angekommen und hat die Performance-Latte ein weiteres Mal weiter nach oben gelegt. Wie die Zeit vergeht: Analogy ist eine Uhr, die als Bildschirmschoner läuft und Stunden, Minuten und Sekunden anzeigt. Die Zahlen sind in einem Kreis angeordnet, zum Ende der Zahlenschlange wird die Schriftgröße kleiner und die Darstellung abgeschwächt. Der Entwickler möchte mit Analogy die Eigenschaften von digitalen und analogen Uhren vereinen. Auf jeden Fall ist die Uhr gut lesbar.

Umbenennung: nForce 980a kommt wirklich
Bereits vor einigen Wochen, zum Start der CES in Las Vegas, machte eine Meldung von Asus die Runde, dass in Kürze ein neues AMD-Mainboard auf Basis des nForce 980a veröffentlicht wurden. Was quasi fast alle Seiten – uns eingeschlossen – für einen Druckfehler hielten, entpuppt sich als Mischung aus beiden. Der 980a ist nur eine weitere Umbenennung.

Reg hardware is quoting AmTech Research's Doug Freedman (who happens to follow NVIDIA) when they say there is a good chance that Apple's upcoming iPhone 3.0 will contain an ARM System on a Chip from NVIDIA called Tegra. While the specs on this thing are pretty sweet:

NASA unveils rock-climbing Axel Rover, slashes dirt without getting dizzy
NASA's latest toy is is an oversized robotic yo-yo dubbed the Axel Rover. Developed in collaboration with Caltech, it's designed to to raise and lower itself over any environment with a motorized lever that can be used for tethering as well as scooping up materials for scientific research and maneuvering its two cameras. Two more motors run each of its wheels, which should ensure it's more than equipped to traverse anything from the Garden of Eden to otherworldly terrain right next door to Hell. RIM's co-CEO Balsillie stepping down from board as part of backdating settlement
Remember that settlement RIM reached with the Ontario Securities Commission yesterday? Well, details of the arrangement have emerged, and Reuters is reporting that in addition to over $90 million CAD being repaid, the company's co-CEO will be stepping down from its executive board as part of the deal. Jim Balsillie will reportedly have to fork over $5 million CAD (~$4.1 million USD) and his position on the board for at least 12 months -- though we're not sure if he intends to return (or if he'll be welcomed back). Logic3 rolls out multi-colored "FunChuk" mini Wii nunchuks
There's certainly no shortage of alternative Wii nunchuks out there, but those really looking for something different than the norm may want to keep an eye out for Logic3's new "FunChuks," which ditch some of the size of Nintendo's standard offering and increase the eye-catchiness considerably.
