GM to mold San Fran and D.C. into early adopter markets for Chevy Volt
If General Motors has anything to say about it, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. will be the first early adopter markets for its plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt. The company is currently working with the local municipalities to flesh out the details. R10Cipher 2 adds file encryption, interface tweaks
Arten Science has released a major update to R10Cipher, its encryption utility. The program works on Mac, Windows and Linux systems, and is primarily used to secure text through 128-bit Blowfish encryption; deciphering content requires both R10 and a shared key. You know, once in a while you hear such a logical, well-thought-out idea that you start to wonder, even fear, that society will end up heading down some sort of interesting and completely boring path to productivity and peace. Citigroup analyst says 500,000 Kindles were sold in 2008
While it could possibly have something to say on the matter at its big event next week, Amazon has so far been mum on the total number of Kindles sold, which has prompted folks like Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney to do their own digging / speculating to arrive at some hard numbers. Apparently, Mahaney was able to determine that Amazon sold about 500,000 Kindles in 2008 by examining the company's agreement with Sprint, which seems to be a reasonable enough conclusion, although things get decidedly more speculative from there. College students contact space station with self-built radio system
While putting a call in to the International Space Station and chatting up an astronaut for a full ten minutes would likely be more than enough to satisfy most science classes, a group of students from Humber College in Toronto decided to go one big step further and do so with a radio system that they designed and built themselves. GLUON ships StudioPack ID for InDesign CS4
GLUON has released an update to StudioPack ID, a collection of publishing tools for Adobe InDesign. Apple has been sued four times over the last two weeks over poor 3G performance. NVIDIA Ion platform review roundup
A handful of sites have managed to get their mitts on a miniature test PC equipped with NVIDIA's Ion platform, and it looks like the line between netbook and laptop just got a whole lot blurrier. According to the testers, the setup delivers smooth HD video playback and could be a boon for the Home Theater PC market. LG Arena KM900 touchscreen phone shows itself in print
We got a whiff of this one last month courtesy of the FCC, but it looks like LG's new Arena KM900 touchscreen phone is now fully making its way out into the open, with the above image and some specs to go along with it surfacing in advance of MWC. As you can see above, this one bears a little resemblance to the Samsung Omnia, and boasts a 5-megapixel camera (plus a secondary one for video calls, it seems), built-in GPS, WiFi, and what's described as an "innovative S-Class 3D interface." SIM2 Solar Series infinite contrast HDR LCD ships in Q2
After several years high dynamic range LCD technology is finally ready for market, now that SIM2 and Dolby are showing off this Solar Series 47-inch screen at the 2009 Integrated Systems Europe show. Just like last year's prototype, it's both brighter (4,000 cd/m2) and has a greater contrast ratio than any flat panel currently available. Transcend rolls out high-speed 192GB 2.5-inch SSD drive
It's not exactly the most spacious 2.5-inch SSD drive available, but Transcend's new 192GB model certainly isn't any slouch either and, according to the company, it should be more than fast enough for most users as well. That's due in no small part to its SATA II interface that helps push out read / write speeds of 150MB and 90MB per second, which are further backed up by a latency of just 0.2ms, and some integrated Error Correction Code (or ECC) to ensure that data is transferred intact. No word on a price just yet, but it looks like it should be rolling out any day now, if it's not already.

Tokyoflash's Heko watch: the perfect gift for fashionable cryptologists
We've always been a fan of watches with unconventional ways of telling time, and Tokyoflash's Heko is no exception. The top and bottom rows each have four LEDs aligned for their analogous analog positions -- 12:00, 3:00, 6:00, and 9:00 -- and two lights in between to indicate one-hour / 15-minute intervals, respectively. The four diodes in the middle are used when the minutes aren't a multiple of five. For example, in the picture above we've got (from left to right) 1:37, 1:43, and 10:13. Toshiba TG01 GUI, video playback demoed on film
We just saw Toshiba's newest, Snapdragon boasting, offering -- the TG01 -- bust onto the scene, and now we're catching some demo action, too. We're not really expecting to get any alone time with the device until it's unveiled at MWC in Barcelona, so the gents over at Slashgear's impressions will have to do for now. Motorola posts $3.6b loss as devices sales fall by 26 percent
Things just aren't getting any better for Motorola -- just weeks after the troubled phone manufacturer announced deep layoffs, it's revealing that it lost $3.6 billion dollars in the fourth quarter. The loss is mainly attributed to falling device sales: handsets were down 26 percent, and mobile devices total were down 51 percent. According to Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha, the answer for now is Android phones, which the company thinks will be more competitive than WinMo devices in 2009 -- and he interestingly said that Moto plans on continuing to make Windows Mobile devices because it thinks WinMo 7 will be a big deal when it comes out in 2010. Recession-busting $150 Blu-ray players coming this year
If digital distribution is going to be held off for another year, Blu-ray players are going to need to achieve some serious market penetration at a rather difficult time. IBM baut Supercomputer mit 20 Petaflops

New iPhone in June? Somebody seems to think so
Apple has a habit of refreshing its iPod and iPhone-type products on a pretty regular schedule, so a new iPhone in June really wouldn't be the surprise of the century, but now we've got word to that effect from the United Arab Emirates. Etisalat is picking up the iPhone 3G over there, along with providing support for existing iPhones sold on the gray market, but the writeup in Business 24/7 makes mention of a brand new iPhone hitting in June, which Etisalat will also get at launch. Toyota claims plug-in Prius averaging 65 mpg
Not only does the impending plug-in Prius poop rainbows and chill out with unicorns, it's also doing pretty good for itself in "real world" MPG testing. Toyota claims they're hitting 65 mpg on average, 10 mpg higher than the brand new 2010 Prius "regular," and credit that fancy new lithium ion battery, which lets the car store up a lot more energy than an average hybrid. Die gängigste Methode, Daten gegen unerlaubte Zugriff zu sichern, ist noch immer die Passworteingabe. Dabei sind viele Alternativen wie eine Iris-Scannung oder auch der Zugriff per Fingerabdruck denkbar, viele davon sind jedoch umstritten. Obvious to us but according to the site English Russian, a large Russian electronics supplier recently bought what they believed to be genuine Canon-made Vacuum cleaners. Why not, after all, that logo slapped all over the manuals and device is a straight rip from the Japanese company. The KIRF-co even has the audacity to host a Russian site registered to Gold Space Inc. at www.canon-electonics.com (the official Canon Electronics site is canon-elec.co.jp) which, ambient music aside, is nothing but a portal into an empty consumer abyss. Studie: Domainmarkt erzielt 2008 hohe Zuwachsraten
Das Jahr 2008 ist für den Domainmarkt ein Jahr mit hohen Zuwachsraten gewesen. Dies geht aus der alljährlichen Studie (PDF) von Sedo hervor. So stieg die Anzahl der Domainverkäufe von 27.270 im Jahr 2007 um 35 Prozent auf 36.884. Das Handelsvolumen wuchs trotz der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Schwäche des vierten Quartals um 8 Prozent auf 53.135.710 Euro. Der Vorjahreswert betrug 49.136.552 Euro.

SanDisk verliert 1,8 Milliarden Dollar im vierten Quartal
SanDisk hat im vierten Quartal einen Verlust von 1,86 Milliarden Dollar oder 8,25 Dollar pro Aktie gemacht. Verantwortlich für den Verlust waren Abschreibungen und Wertberichtigungen auf Lagerbestände in Höhe von 1,91 Milliarden Dollar. Bereits im dritten Vierteljahr hatte der Speicherhersteller einen Fehlbetrag von 155 Millionen Dollar ausgewiesen. Im letzten Quartal 2007 lag der Gewinn des Unternehmens noch bei 106 Millionen Dollar oder 0,45 Dollar pro Aktie.

IBM's Sequoia: 20x faster than the world's fastest supercomputer
Roadrunner? Pfff, your chart-topping 1.105 petaflops are laughable. IBM just announced its 20-freaking-petaflop Sequoia supercomputer due for delivery by 2012. While supercomputer speeds have steadily increased year-over-year, a 20x jump in calculations per second since the last world ranking is unheard of, even if the system has yet to come on-line. Slated to spend its life simulating nuclear explosions, Sequoia will use 45-nm (PowerPC, presumably) processors with 16 cores per chip for as many as 4,096 processors per rack. That's a total of 1.6 million cores assisted by 1.6 petabytes of memory. P

Did Hackintosh just beat Linux?
Oh, dayum! We just noticed something peculiar in this week's marketshare numbers from Net Applications. Sketchy Mac OS's that didn't register version numbers outpaced Linux (and the iPhone) in January. Those is most likely Hackintoshes.

T-Mobile G1 firmware RC33 (also known as "not Cupcake") trickles into reality

Nikon just dropped the refresh bomb on its Coolpix line, adding eight new point-and-shoots to the family. Here's the rundown:
Coolpix S230 and S220: 10 megapixels with a touchscreen that lets you write and draw on your photos. Really affordable camera lens calendar is just what your layoff asked for
It's a camera lens no, wait. It's not. It's actually a calendar to goes up to the year 2032, designed by artist Sharad Haksar. It's apparently made from a solid piece of aluminum, though nobody seems sure if this is a manual calendar or one that is powered and self-updating. That's about it for details, but we hear they're going to be available on the artist's website for two grand -- according to a commenter on Yanko Design -- and the calendars will be ready to ship about two weeks from the time of the order.[Via SlashGear]

Garbage-powered garbage truck now making its way across merry England
The Brits get all the cool stuff -- Queen Elizabeth II, The Sex Pistols and now a rubbish truck that runs on rubbish (sort of). That's right: up in Hudderfield they've just unleashed a modded three-and-a-half ton Smith Edison Ford Transit garbage truck that tools around, picking up garbage, hauls it to a nearby Energy from Waste power station and recycling center which then burns the 'bage to make electricity for the next day's route. Aptera designs solar-powered pontoon
Sure, it's just a concept for now, but this Aptera-designed solar-powered boat is looking pretty decent, so we thought we'd bring a few of the details over here for you. The Loon, as it's called, has got a pontoon shape to it, and is relatively lightweight for its size, with 1000W solar panel roofing which is collapsible for compact storing of the boat when not in the water. It's 22 feet long, and is made of recycled materials, bamboo and natural fibers, with an estimated top speed of 7 knots (it should be able to travel about 35 miles a day). Pantech's blow-controlled Sky Wind not for the faint of breath
Using our powers of huffing and puffing is nothing new when it comes to device interaction -- even our Wii remote has doubled as an ocarina at some point -- but Pantech's looking to take it a step further with the Korea-bound IM-S410K Sky Wind. Powered by Fantalog Interactive's Emotion Engine software, the device recognizes short and long blows via the microphone and uses it for switching wallpapers, adjusting screen brightness, and -- in a less gimmicky use -- snapping photos with a blast of air while stabilizing the phone with both hands. Tesla can't get funding, postpones plans to build new factory
Looks like Tesla's decision to jack up options pricing on the Roadster to make the company's financials more enticing to investors didn't necessarily pay off: the company failed to score the required $100m in private funding needed to start building that new factory and HQ in San Jose. SMART adds "touch recognition" to SMART Boards
We've seen some interesting large-scale multitouch products from SMART lately, but the company's bread and butter is still the SMART Board interactive whiteboard, and it's getting a neat little upgrade today: touch recognition. The board now intelligently senses the difference between a pen and your hand, so you can draw with the pen, move objects with your finger, and erase with the palm of your hand all at the same time -- no tool switching required. It's just a little tweak, sure, but it's the stuff like this that's going to make touch a viable primary interface -- check out a video after the break.
