Apple posts EFI and keyboard updates
Apple has posted EFI updates for it's MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and iMac computers - without much details, as usual:
This update fixes several issues to improve the stability of computers.
They also updated the accompanying restoration CD image: Firmware Restoration CD 1.6
The Firmware Restoration CD is used to restore the firmware of Intel-based Macintosh computers.
And an update for the aluminium keyboard:
This firmware update addresses an issue with the aluminum Apple Keyboard and the aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard where a key may repeat unexpectedly while typing.
All updates can be found on www.apple.com/support/downloads/, or via the well-known Software Update panel.

PSP firmware 3.95 hits the tubes

Yamaha bringing Tenori-on Stateside this month

iPhone is already the top mobile browser
It's been on the market for just six months, and already the iPhone (plus its Wi-Fi-only variant, the iPod Touch) is the most used mobile browser for Internet access in the U.S., according to Irish researcher StatCounter. At No. 2 is the Symbian OS used in Nokia's devices. Globally, the two positions are reversed. In either case, Windows Mobile -- in all its versions -- is just a blip.

Les 8800 GT soon for the Mac Pro Rev 1 ?
Source: Macrumors Since the release of Mac Pro, the owners of the previous model have been hoping that a 8800 GT model compatible with their machine will (soon) be available, and despite promises made by NVidia this is still not so.
A reader of Macrumors decided to put the question directly to Steve Jobs via mail. He responded and his answer could revive hopes:
"NVidia has not stepped up, we will have to do so. This should be available within a month."

Apple Store US closed [Upd]

Another iPhone SDK
Source: http://www.iphoneatlas.com Apple is offering a downloadable new beta iPhone SDK marked 9a2151. It contains, among other things, a new emulator and new firmware that can be installed on the equipment of developers accredited by Apple.
It seems Apple has an enormous power over the iPhone using the beta firmware. They could (it is still to be confirmed) disable the betas remotely once the new versions become available. Strangely, the unofficial devices on which the installation of the beta was forced are not affected by this disabling.
We remind you that if the sim deblocking is not illegal, downloading a beta firmware and installing it is considered piracy.

Yahoo! launches a new online publicity system

TimeMachineScheduler compatible with network discs
The software TimeMachineScheduler which allows changing the frequency of backups using Time Machine is now at version 2.1.

Toshiba fleshes out new Satellite P300 series

We spotted this P300 refresh last week, but Toshiba was kind enough today to bring some actual SKUs out in the open. The 17-inch laptops pack a decent punch for the price, but the 1440 x 900 screens aren't exactly going to win any points. For $1,050 you can get an Intel Core 2 Duo T5550-powered machine, with 3GB of RAM, a 320GB HDD, DVD burner, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 256MB graphics, a built-in webcam and so forth. Lop off a hundie and you can nab an AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-62 processor, 2GB of RAM, 250GB of HDD and a Radeon X1250 graphics.

DIY picture frame does IM, Skype notifications

The 14.1-inch 1280 x 800 laptop runs on an Intel T2370 processor and measures a passable 1.37-inches thick, and yet retails for a mere 5,499 Yuan -- about $784 US. ASUS didn't skimp on the looks, ports or other internals either, though the integrated graphics is always a sad comprimise of this price range. Intel CEO Paul Otellini is a Mac user by night, but sticks with his Windows laptop for business applications, he revealed today.Otellini was speaking in a wide-ranging interview with the BBC. FireWire set to double in speed
FireWire data transfer speeds seem set to double, thanks to a new chipset that has been announced this week by developing company, Symwave.
While there's no immediate plans to implement it in the Mac the company behind the invention is now actively seeking device and computer manufacturers prepared to employ it.
Devices implementing support for the new technology will see speeds of 1.6 gigabits per second. Even better, it will power external hard drives without demanding they be plugged in.

Just last week, the robot walker set an unofficial world record by trotting nonstop for 45 laps (that's 5.6 miles, for those counting) around the university's Barton Hall running track. AirPort-Basisstationen zusammenschließen
Wenn die Airport-Basisstation nicht weit genug funkt, kommt man um eine zweite Basisstation meist nicht herum. Mittels des Wireless Distribution System (WDS) ist es aber möglich, mit einer zweiten Basisstation das selbe drahtlose Netzwerk zu "verlängern" - so müssen nicht zwei verschiedene WLANs nebeneinander betrieben werden. Apples Airport-Basisstationen unterstützen diesen Standard schon länger, mit dem neusten Software-Update wurde die Einrichtung eines WDS aber deutlich vereinfacht.

Höhere Auflösung auf iPhone und iTouch
Auch wenn Apple die Videoauflösung für den iPod touch und das iPhone mit 640 x 480 angibt, lassen sich deutlich höher aufgelöste Videos darauf wiedergeben. Arstechnica ist aufgefallen, das ein aus dem iTunes Store bezogenes Video mit 853x366 Pixeln aufgelöst ist - also gut 5.000 Pixel über der bisher als Limit gesetzten Gesamtpixelzahl von 307.000 Pixeln. Bei weiteren Versuchen kam heraus, dass das iPhone Videos bis zu einer Auflösung von 720x576 Pixeln mit 25 Bildern pro Sekunde wiedergeben kann, was exakt dem europäischen PAL-Standard entspricht.
Scheint, als müssten wir unseren alten Artikel Konvertiertipps für iPod-Videos demnächst überarbeiten. Allerdings solltet ihr wissen, dass sich die hohe Auflösung nur dann lohnt, wenn die Filme tatsächlich auch auf einem Computerbildschirm oder TV-Gerät wiedergegeben

Vista SP1: Microsoft beseitigt Fehler im Vorab-Patch
Für einige Vista-Anwender, die auf das Service Pack 1 für Microsofts aktuelles Betriebssystem warteten, wurden bereits die Vorbereitungen eine wahre Odyssee. Der Patch KB937287 führte auf einigen Systemen im Februar 2008 zu einer Endlosschleife, so dass sich Vista nicht mehr hochfahren ließ. AMD hat seine Umsatzprognose für das erste Quartal nach unten korrigiert. Der Wechsel von einem höheren in den seit gestern neu angebotenen günstigsten Tarif Complete S ist offensichtlich auch vor Ablauf der eigentlichen Sechsmonatsfrist möglich.
Bei T-Mobile heißt es ja offiziell: Der Wechsel in einen höherwertigen Tarif ist jederzeit möglich, ansonsten besteht nach Ablauf von sechs Monaten die Möglichkeit zum Tarifwechsel. Bayerns Ministerpräsident fordert Investitionen in Jugendschutz
Bayerns Ministerpräsident Günther Beckstein hat gestern auf dem Kongress "Munich Gaming" in München die Digitalspieleindustrie als Zukunftsmarkt mit großen Chancen bezeichnet. Gleichzeitig forderte er die Branche aber dazu auf, sich offen mit den kritischen Aspekten des Games-Sektors auseinanderzusetzen. EU erlaubt Handynutzung in Flugzeugen
Europäische Fluggesellschaften können ab sofort das Telefonieren mit dem Handy während eines innereuropäischen Fluges erlauben. Die EU-Kommission hat gestern die notwendigen technischen Standards für Telefonate über den Wolken festgelegt. Die verlautbarten Rahmenbedingungen beschreiben Bordsysteme, die eine Weiterleitung der Gespräche an den Boden ohne Gefährdung der Flugsicherheit ermöglichen. Nun seien die Fluggesellschaften aufgefordert, die Systeme umzusetzen und den Service anzubieten, heißt es von Seiten der Behörde in Brüssel.

Quake 3 on iPod Touch

Microsoft bietet ab sofort die Beta 1 des Internet Explorer 8 auch in deutscher Sprache an. Anfang März 2008 erschien die erste Vorabversion des kommenden Microsoft-Browsers zunächst nur in englischer Sprache. Bis auf die Lokalisierung unterscheiden sich die beiden Beta-Fassungen nicht. iPod-Radiowecker bei Tchibo
Da geht man zum Bäcker um zwei Brötchen (auch Wecken, Schrippen und was weiß ich alles genannt) zu kaufen und kommt mit einem iPod-Wecker nach Hause. Na nicht ganz, das MP3-Radio-Soundsystem von Tchibo gibt es vermutlich nur online, aber einen Hinweis ist es uns wert:
Für 80 Euro gibt es das Radio mit PLL-Tuner und 10 Senderspeichern sowie Weckfunktion und iPod-Dock. Der angeschlossene iPod wird natürlich auch geladen, im Lieferumfang sind zudem neun Dock-Adapter, ein Netzteil sowie eine Fernbedienung (mit etwas vielen Tasten) und die Batterien dazu enthalten.

Researcher creates malicious, router-controlling website

Don't tell Dan Kaminsky that -- the researcher has developed a method of DNS attack utilizing typical D-Link or Linksys routers that can allow hackers to gain command of your gear. The winner-takes-all maneuver, which is called a "DNS rebinding attack," functions by putting JavaScript into play that fools your browser into altering your router's configuration, thus letting the operator remotely administer the device. The concept isn't water-tight, as it takes advantage of easily-guessable router admin passwords, though Kaminsky says the enabling bug exists as a "core issue" for browsers.
