iTunes fairplay protection broken again
While for years we did not have a solution on the Mac to remove DRM music bought on iTunes without any loss of quality, since the beginning of the year two programs (that we will not cite) have pointed the ends of their noses up at DRM and allow in a few seconds to remove all traces of protection.
Their approach is different: The first reads the mp4 (permission/licence must be installed on the computer) and scans what passes through the memory of the Mac to intercept what looks like the mp4 audio. The second is much more radical because we are dealing with a program that for the first time simply removes the DRM file by reverse engineering, without the help of QuickTime libraries and especially without the user needing to have the rights to the mp4 in the first place. It seems that the latter program that has exploded since its publication, Apple's lawyers have sent a nice letter (Cease and desist) to the forum hymn-project and others in rapidshare asking them remove all links to download. Apple scores 100 extra for Apple TV in Europe
Since MWSF Apple TV costs only $229 in the United States, and Apple has not seen fit to lower its price in Europe (250 Euros excl tax).

iPhone wide open
Last week we told you about our experiences vis-a-vis the iPhone and the latest hacks for sim unlocking.
Since then things have changed and protections for iPhone have now been undone in large part by the famous Geohot.
The latest hack lets you change the bootloader of the iPhone, ie the first piece of code that loads the the hardware drivers, the software that tells the iPhone what it is. The bootloader contains basic information on the iPhone, and these were exploited in its first draft, stamped 3.9.
Apple has responded by offering a new bootloader, 4.6 in the latest equipment (roughly since the launch in England) , which removed these flaws and is relatively reliable. However, its reliability has also been compromised, at least in a certain way.

Upstart Solazyme promises to make fuel from algae

Optimus Maximus: at long last, we bring one home to test

Sure, it seemed like after the years of hard drinking, petty crime, and run-ins with the law, Elmo had cleaned up his act -- but a shocking report out of Tampa Bay, Florida, says otherwise. BBC iPlayer for the Mac in a couple of weeks

Selbstverpflichtung chinesischer Internet-Anbieter

Time Capsule steht vor der Auslieferung
Bereits zur Macworld Expo im Januar angekündigt und für Februar versprochen, ist bisher noch nichts von Apples Time-Capsule-Geräten im Handel zu sehen. Während man bis vor kurzem im deutschen Apple Store auf die Verfügbarkeit im Februar hingewiesen wurde, sind dort jetzt 3 - 4 Wochen zu lesen. Jedoch scheint der Mac-Hersteller gut im Zeitplan zu liegen, denn MacNN berichtet nun unter Berufung auf US-Händler Best Buy, dass die ersten Geräte am kommenden Sonntag ausgeliefert werden sollen.

Noch mehr Multitouch-Eingabeideen von Apple
Schon mit dem Touchpad der MacBooks sind diverse Multitouch-Fähigkeiten gegeben. Die Krönung setzt dem aber bisher das MacBook Air mit seinem neuartigen Touchpad auf. Denn mit ihm sind bereits Funktionen möglich, die man bisher nur beim iPhone sah. Diese erweiterte Pad wird bald wohl auch in den anderen MacBook-Modellen zu finden sein. Chinesische Regierung unterstützt 3Com-Übernahme
Zur vorerst geplatzten Übernahme des US-Technologieunternehmens 3Com durch den chinesischen Telekommunikationsausrüster Huawei und das Private-Equity-Unternehmen Bain Capital meldet sich nun auch die chinesische Regierung zu Wort. MySpace to compete against iTunes in music downloads
It looks like MySpace owner, News Corp, plans to invade the music download space with a Music download service of its own. Reuters speculates that it might just be a white box version of Amazon's DRM-Free MP3 service (smart choice by MySpace).

The Wall Street Journal is postulating on a behind the scenes Apple - Adobe skirmish about putting Flash in the iPhone. I think the argument can be summed up with a sentence:
Who will control video on the mobile web?
Need evidence? If Apple was planning on releasing Flash on the iPhone, why would Youtube be converting their library to H.264? Yes, the Quicktime quality is better - but not that much better than Flash on a 480x320 inch screen. Zyxel begins shipping WiMAX routers to Sprint Nextel
Digitimes reports that Zyxtel is shipping the XHOM WiMAX high speed routers to Sprint that will be used in its nationawide WiMAX rollout. These will be used at Sprint's customer's homes and should start hitting the streets very soon.

ATI's mix-n-match CrossFire X technology gets official, tested

Das Spiel der Könige gab es schon in diversen Umsetzungen für PC und Konsolen. Oftmals mit zahlreichen zusätzlichen Elementen, die das Brettspiel modernisieren und aufwerten sollten, man denke nur an die Battle-Chess-Reihe. Mit einem Festakt hat heute der nordrhein-westfälische Ministerpräsident Jürgen Rüttgers in Jülich den schnellsten zivilen Supercomputer der Welt für die Nutzer freigeschaltet. Der "Jugene" genannte Rechner schafft rund 167 Teraflops (Billionen Rechenoperationen pro Sekunde). Dazu rechnen über 65.000 Prozessoren in 16 etwa telefonzellengroßen Schränken. Jugene ist damit Europas schnellster Supercomputer.

Neue Technik: Tausendfaches Blitzlicht im Drucker
Toner-Drucker heizen beim Drucken das gesamte Papier auf, was nicht selten zu Problemen führt und für gewellte Oberflächen sorgt. Papiere mit Klebstoffanteilen wie Etiketten aber auch Kunststoffen und anderen temperaturempfindlichen Materialen leiden ebenfalls unter der Hitze. Wenn der Mac Pro nicht aus dem Schlaf erwacht
Sollte ein Mac Pro anstatt aus dem Ruhezustand aufzuwachen, jedesmal neu starten, so findet der Anwender einige Vorschläge zur Problemlösung bei MacFixIt. Zum einen besteht die Möglichkeit, den System Management Controller (SMC) zurückzusetzen. Dieser Chip ist für Energie-Funktionen zuständig. Der SMC lässt sich zurücksetzen, indem man den Mac Pro ausschaltet und alle Kabel entfernt. Nach einer Wartezeit von mindestens fünfzehn Sekunden können das Netzkabel wieder eingesteckt und alle Peripheriegeräte verbunden werden. Anschließend kann der Computer wieder eingeschaltet werden.

Alpine präsentiert drei Nachfolger für das iDA-X001
Alpines iDA-X001 war das weltweit erste, speziell auf den iPod zugeschnittene Autoradio. Für 2008 hat der Hersteller nun gleich drei Nachfolger für die iPod-Headunit vorgestellt.
Sowohl das Topmodell IDA-X100 wie auch die Mittelklasse-Headunit IDA-X200 kommen mit dem neuen "Double-Action-Drehregler" und lassen sich jetzt einfacher und innovativer bedienen. Im Gegensatz zum X100 mit Vielfarb-TFT-Display und der möglichen Anzeige von Covergrafiken kommt das X-200 mit einem einfacheren 3-Farb-Display, das Einstiegsmodell X300 besitzt lediglich ein Monochromdisplay.

Office 2008 für Mac - Update in Arbeit
Das Mac-Team von Microsoft will am 11. März 2008 ein Update für Office 2008 für Mac veröffentlichen. Damit sollen kleinere Programmfehler korrigiert werden und insgesamt wird eine höhere Stabilität der Software versprochen. Apple will personalisierte Podcasts einführen
Bald werden Podcasts persönlich - zumindest wenn ein beim US-Patentamt eingereichter Antrag in die Realität umgesetzt wird. Allerdings geht Apple dabei nicht so weit, Platzhalter zu erlauben, um den Namen, Wohnort und andere Daten, die sich so auf der Festplatte tummeln, in den Podcast zu integrieren. Stattdessen wird das Konzept übernommen, was der iTunes Store mit den klassischen Musikalben gemacht hat: Statt den Podcast in seiner Gänze zu abonnieren, sollen Abonnenten zukünftig die Möglichkeit, haben, sich die für sie relevanten Themen herauszupicken.

Windows Live SkyDrive: Online-Festplatte mit 5 GByte

Ohne Monitor: iToilet
Die Antwort auf japanische High-Tech-Toiletten und eine Ergänzung für Apples Produktpalette: die iToilet. Silberfarben besprüht und mit Apple versehen, haben sich die Macher dann doch eher unter die Clone-Hersteller begeben und statt einem echten Mac einen Pentium III reingesteckt, mit insgesamt 280 GB Festplattenspeicherplatz und Ubunto 7. Die Fotos wurden allerdings mit dem iPhone gemacht, der Videoschnitt erfolgte mit iMovie HD - der Mac war den Machern für eine Toilettenfüllung wohl zu wertvoll.

Easter Eggs in Computer-Software sind seltener geworden, aber im Keyboard-Firmware-Upgrade für MacBook und MacBook Pro ist eines drin. Es ist zwar kein Flugsimulator, aber dafür zeigen Apple-Entwickler ihre Verbundenheit mit dem Roman 1984. Mehr neue Blackberry-Kunden als erwartet
Research In Motion hat im vierten Quartal 15 bis 20 Prozent mehr neue Kunden gewonnen, als ursprünglich angenommen. Ursprünglich ging RIM davon aus, insgesamt 1,82 Millionen neue Abonnenten während dieses Zeitraums werben zu können. Doch ein besonders starkes Weihnachtsgeschäft und das Ausbleiben des üblichen saisonbedingten Einbruchs hätten nun für einen noch größeren Zuwachs gesorgt. Obwohl es erst vor kurzem zu einem erneuten Ausfall des Blackberry-Services gekommen war, bleibt der Kundenzustrom demnach ungebremst.

Microsoft will sich mehr öffnen
Microsofts Führungselite hat bekannt gegeben, Rechtsvorschriften künftig besser nachkommen und harmonischer mit dem Rest der IT-Branche zusammenarbeiten zu wollen. Einerseits sollen unzählige Dokumentationen der Kommunikationsprotokolle veröffentlicht werden, um es dritten Parteien leichter zu machen, an Microsofts Produkte anzuknüpfen. Außenstehende Entwickler bekommen beispielsweise ab Juni Zugang zu den Programmierschnittstellen für Office 2007, die auch die Microsoft-Ingenieure nutzen. "Zunächst helfen wir so zwar unseren Konkurrenten, doch letztendlich wird Microsoft davon profitieren, wenn Drittentwickler Produkte auf Basis unserer Software entwickeln", erklärt Microsoft-Chef Steve Ballmer.

Infineon-Chef angeblich kurz vor dem Rausschmiss
Infineons Vorstandschef Wolfgang Ziebart steht einem Zeitungsbericht zufolge kurz vor seiner Ablösung. Grund soll die finanzielle Situation des Chipherstellers sein, die nicht zum Besten steht. Die Sanierungserfolge lassen auf sich warten, der anhaltend hohe Preisdruck in der DRAM-Branche macht Qimonda, der ehemaligen Halbleitersparte von Infineon, zu schaffen. Im abgelaufenen Quartal musste Qimonda fast 600 Millionen Euro Verlust einstecken.

Fujitsu-Siemens-Chef erwartet Fortbestand von FSC

Tech-On , a publication of Nikkey, gave engineers a MacBook Air, which was torn to pieces and they gave their views on its architecture.
They were very surprised, admitting that they have never seen anything similar in their career: it does not resemble any other machine.
Mostly they were surprised by the complexity not of the motherboard, but of the assembly of the machine. Imagine it took 30 screws to remove the keyboard. These cannot be for securing the keybord - there is not the slightest chance of the keyboard moving if the laptop is knocked. One of them has even said that he would never have dared to propose such a solution to his employers for fear of being given an earful.
Overall, there are simply an enormous number of screws in the machine: What mount several laptops from other brands!

WowWee Dragonfly bots being hunted by hawks

Researchers claim GSM calls can be hacked on the cheap

Diesel-powered Loremo promises to hit 150 miles per gallon

It's not the first time we've seen diesel touted as a solution for more efficient vehicles, but Loremo AG's new eponymously-titled vehicle may just have all of 'em beat -- if it can live up to its claims, that is. Cold boot disk encryption attack is shockingly effective
