EU says it'll believe Microsoft is going open when it sees it

Echoing the reactions of many to Microsoft's decision to open things up this morning, the European Commission issued a statement this morning saying that while it welcomes any moves towards "genuine interoperability," it's not going to believe it until it sees it -- it's counted four similar announcements by Redmond in the past, with nothing to show for it. Of course, Microsoft is currently being investigated for antitrust violations in Europe, so there's a whispered belief that the new steps are a ploy to derail that process, but that's pretty doubtful -- and the EU's not having it anyway

Young Optics set to dish out pico-projector by mid-2008

Texas Instruments has been showing off its pico-projector technology for some time now, but it looks like it's finally making its way into a finished product, with Young Optics announcing that it expects to ship the first such projectors "by the end of second quarter or the beginning of the third quarter." iPhone: forever blowing bubbles?
Source: Macuser Macuser recently relayed information that had gone unnoticed until now, probably because it affects a limited number of people.
According to testimony from the Apple support forums , some iPhone owners (apparently among the first buyers) noticed under their iPhone screen air bubbles. One of the person has seen five such bubbles!

Franklin Speaking Spelling Bee takes a page from Mylo, also the whole design

Given how few people have actually ever seen or used a Sony Mylo, we suppose it's possible that Franklin's designers happened upon the look of the Speaking Spelling Bee completely by chance, but somehow we doubt it. Franklin was demoing the lil' guy at Toy Fair this past weekend, and it's actually an interesting little gadget: it hooks up to a TV so up to 6 kids can take each other on in spelling contests, it contains the Merriam-Webster Intermediate Dictionary, Thesaurus, and Rhyming Dictionary, it plays Sudoku and Hangman, and it's expandable via SD. We already thought that 4G iPod Bluetooth mod was pretty sweet, but Fstedie has managed to top himself, cramming a BT adapter into a 5G video iPod without altering the stock appearance, apart from that clear third-party faceplate. The basics of the hack are pretty similar -- replace the hard drive with a CF card, wire up a Bluetooth adapter -- but the cramped internals of the 5G case makes it much more difficult to pull off, apparently. Apple and Adobe butting heads?
The Wall Street Journal is postulating on a behind the scenes Apple - Adobe skirmish about putting Flash in the iPhone. I think the argument can be summed up with a sentense:
Who will control video on the mobile web?
Need evidence? If Apple was planning on releasing Flash on the iPhone, why would Youtube be converting their library to H.264? Yes the quality is better but not that much better than Flash. Every Youtube video put on the web is effectively a interface for a Flash interfaced mobile video platform.
Furthermore, (although likely a red herring) even the lighter versions of Flash tax the processor and by extention the battery life of a device - which provide a convenient excuse for Apple to say it wants to stay of

eSport wird Teil der Olympischen Spiele von Peking

Adobe wünscht sich Flash auf dem iPhone
Bisher unterstützt das iPhone Adobes Software für dynamische Inhalte, den Flash Player, noch nicht. Auch wenn es die noch immer hoffenden unter den Mac-Nutzern enttäuschen wird: Die Gerüchte um ein Special Event Ende Februar lösten sich letzte Nacht in Luft auf. iToilet case mod finally delivers upon the concept's amazing promise

MySpace to compete against iTunes in music downloads
It looks like MySpace owner, News Corp, plans to invade the music download space with a Music download service of its own. Reuters speculates that it might just be a white box version of Amazon's DRM-Free MP3 service (smart choice by MySpace).
Reuters points out that the venture may be more about distinguishing MySpace from up and coming rival, Facebook than actually making money.

An Apple a day not good for Flash memory
Time flies when you're having a good time: it has been almost 2 years since the market for memory has been very bad. Prices plummeted dramatically for manufacturers who have had a great deal of trouble to keep their heads above water, especially the little ones (manufacturers, not heads).
Leading analysts hoped that 2008 would mark the end of the crisis thanks to strong growth in the market for SSD drives and Walkmans.
But today Apple -- who buys 13% of world production for its iPod -- fearing a slowdown in sales during the year, decreased the volume of its orders. This means that we will end up again with estimates of production higher than sales, which will cause a further decline in prices.
The fact remains that for the first time in many years, the market for Apple's very profitable portable will have little or no growth. This expectation drove the significant reductions in the price of their 1 GB iPod shuffle while the 2GB model has not yet been announced commercially, evidence the

DVD Jon clobbers DRM again
DVD Jon, who acquired his "title of nobility" by bypassing the protections of DVDs, has also taken on, on several occasions, iTunes and its FairPlay DRM.
He has returned to the battlefield with his company DoubleTwist, and proposes a universal file-exchange solution for all platforms: computers, mp3 players, mobile phones.
The ultimate goal is to free users from the constraints inherent in these devices and create perfect interoperability.
His software is already available on the PC and detects iTunes Mp4 protected files , cleaning them of any DRM.
Just as this situation could have posed great problems to Apple just a year ago, the trend to do away with DRM minimises the impact of such news. The software DVD Jon once again proves that no protection is foolproof. This new move could help Apple convince the majors to abandon once and for all DRM protections.

Dieses Programm hätte beim Lied "MFG" von den Fantastischen 4 viel zu tun: TypeIt4Me erkennt bestimmte Textabkürzungen und schreibt diese dann automatisch aus. Apple warnt vor geringerer Flashspeicher-Nachfrage
Langfristig gesehen werden Flashspeicher-Produkte wohl einen großen Bestandteil in Bezug auf die Speicherlösungen ausmachen. Bereits heutzutage werden die kleinen Chips in MP3-Playern wie dem iPod wie Sand am Meer verbaut. Auch im iPhone oder im MacBook Air kommen so genannte NAND-Flashspeicherchips zum Einsatz. Hinter dem Namen DaXian X999 versteckt sich kein nues Automodell, sondern ein weiterer iPhone-Klon aus China. Die Bauform des Geräts und Erscheinung ähnelt dem iPhone sehr und selbstverständlich hat es einen berührungsempfindlichen Bildschirm. Nach Berichten, dass die 16-GB-Variante des iPhone nun über die Telekom-Shops bestellt werden kann, hat eine Nachfrage bei T-Mobile-Pressesprecher Alexander von Schmettow ergeben, dass dies den Tatsachen entspricht. A flood of low price portables
Source: Digitimes The EEEPC, a laptop with an 7" screen sold for less than 300, manufactured by Asus, has met with huge success despite minimalist performance. Already other PC manufacturers want to roll with the momentum and also offer machines at entry level for deflated prices.
That is certainly the phenomenon, in the face of the computing world's traditions, which has prompted Intel to accelerate the release of its platform Shelton, which will arrive as early as May, instead of later in the year.
It is the architecture of a very cheap motherboard and processors , entirely in line with this new method.
It will consist of engraved processors in 45nm low frequency (roughly those of Air Macbook) and a chipset with integrated video. The power requirement is not yet known.
Of course, one might wonder whether Apple will follow this wave and propose a machine two to three times cheaper than a MacBook.

So kommen Hörbücher von CD ins Hörbuchmenü
Das Thema ist unentwegt aktuell: Die selbst gerippte Hörbuch-CD liegt in Form von unzähligen Einzeldateien im Musikbereich in iTunes - wie schaffe ich es, dass das Hörbuch auch im entsprechenden iTunes-Ordner erscheint, am besten dann noch als eine einzige Datei mit Lesezeichenfunktion (d.h. iTunes oder der iPod spielen immer an der Stelle weiter, wo zuvor gestoppt wurde - auch wenn man dazwischen etwas anderes gehört hat)?
Wo früher noch mächtig Hand angelegt und Skripte ausgeführt werden mussten, genügen heute eigentlich zwei Programme: Der Audiobook Maker für Mac und der MP3 to Audio Book Converter für Windows. Und das Beste: beide sind kostenlos!

Erstmals mehr Flachbildfernseher als Röhren-TVs verkauft
Einem Bericht des Markforschungsinstituts DisplaySearch zufolge konnten im letzten Quartal 2007 weltweit erstmals mehr LCD-Fernseher als Röhren-TVs verkauft werden. Die Stückzahlen aller verkauften Fernseher stieg im Jahresvergleich um 5 Prozent an - auf 200 Millionen Stück weltweit. Damit wurden insgesamt mehr als 100 Milliarden US-Dollar umgesetzt. Die Anwendungsentwicklung ähnelt anscheinend einer Schatzsuche. Neuestes Fundstück unabhängiger Entwickler ist die CoverFlow-Technologie von Apple. Diese wird bekanntlich von iTunes genutzt, aber den Programmierern ist es gelungen, diese Technologie für eigene native iPhone-Software zu verwenden. Bisher gibt es Beispielanwendungen, welche die Symbole der installierten Anwendungen, vier festgelegte Bilder oder die mit der Kamera aufgenommenen (oder mit "ScreenShot"/Sketches erstellen) Fotos anzeigt.

Alien or zombie threat averted: the spy satellite has been destroyed... probably

We got a chance to check out the first functioning games for Zune and were able to answer a few -- but not many -- questions about how this thing's bound to play out.
For starters, first-gen Zunes don't appear to be ruled out by any means, but it's going to be dependent on the game controls. Zauri, the sample space shooter game demoed today, uses the Zunepad, thus wouldn't work (as well) on a Zune 30. Nothing has been decided as to whether games will universally require 2nd-gen Zunes, though.

This is frankly brilliant. A hands-free umbrella is perfect for walking to work while yapping on your phone with one hand and cradling a cup of coffee with the other. Unfortunately it's just never going to make it past the "my friends will laugh at me" stage, because they will. They will laugh so very hard. G-Trainer "anti-gravity" treadmill gets approved by the FDA

Alter-G looks to have been boasting about its G-Trainer "anti-gravity" treadmill for some time now, but it seems that it's now a whole lot closer to finding itself under your feet someday, as it has now been approved as an actual medical device by the FDA. In case it didn't pop up on your radar, the device itself makes use of a specialized air pressure regulation system to reduce the individuals' effective body weight by up to 80%, with it apparently precise enough to make changes in increments as small as 1%.
