Google experimentiert mit QUIC
Das maßgeblich von Google entwickelte SPDY-Protokoll wurde kürzlich zum Transportprotokoll für den kommenden Standard HTTP 2.0 bestimmt. Bei Google arbeitet man aber bereits erneut an einer Verbesserung der Geschwindigkeit von Netzwerkverbindungen. Das Zauberwort heißt dieses Mal „Quick UDP Internet Connections“ (QUIC).

Report: Apple considering new suit against Galaxy S4
Bloomberg is reporting that U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul S. Grewal has rejected Apple's attempt to include the recently released Samsung Galaxy S4 in Apple's second California lawsuit against Samsung which is slated to begin in March of 2014.
Adding another product to the case is a "tax on the court's resources," Grewal said in the ruling. "Each time these parties appear in the courtroom, they consume considerable amounts of the court's time and energy, which takes time way from other parties who also require and are entitled to the court's attention."

T-Mobile holding a press event July 10th, promises 'boldest moves yet'
We're never ones to turn down a particularly intriguing teaser, so you can bet we'll be be there with bells on. T-Mobile's event's going down on July 10th in New York City. Beyond that, well, your guess is as good as ours. The minimalistic magenta invite promises that the carrier will be delivering its "boldest moves yet," via an image file titled, fittingly, "moonshot." Moon rockets? PlayStation Moves? BlackBerry Bolds? The sky's the limit, apparently.

Daily iPhone App: Where's My Mickey combines Disney's old with its new
Disney has come up with yet another way to wring a new title out of its megahit Where's My Water. This time, it combines the "swipe to clean" gameplay with one of the company's oldest properties. Yes, they've pulled out Mickey Mouse for an iOS game, and Where's My Mickey? is available on the App Store right now.

Twitter #Music for iOS adds genres for more targeted filtering, thankfully omits rap-rock

Mailbox for iPhone adds landscape, Gmail aliases
Orchestra, Inc.'s Mailbox app has been updated to version 1.3.2, bringing with it a slew of new features and fixes. The first major addition is the inclusion of landscape view support, making the app just a little easier for users who prefer a sideways keyboard. The update also brings a new "send as" alias functionality with Gmail. With this feature users can now send messages with a different email address listed as the sender instead of their official gmail address.

RadioShack to be among chains carrying Virgin iPhone 5 at launch
RadioShack has announced plans to join in tomorrow's launch of the Virgin Mobile iPhone 5. Prices will be identical to those direct from Virgin, except that RadioShack is promising $50 off the cost of the phone with a qualifying trade-in. That offer expires July 27th. How Steve Jobs influenced Pixar's main campus building
Buzzfeed has put together an interesting article detailing the oversight and input the late Steve Jobs had over the construction of Pixar's main building on its 22-acre campus in Emeryville, California.

RadioShack to Offer No-Contract Virgin Mobile iPhones Beginning Tomorrow [iOS Blog]
As announced earlier this month, Sprint subsidiary Virgin Mobile is set to begin offering the iPhone this later this week. While the no-contract carrier will offer the phone via its own website, select retailers, such as Best Buy and RadioShack, will also be carrying Virgin Mobile iPhones. Numerous Apple executives sell millions worth of shares
Last Friday we reported on a new SEC filing from Apple which relayed that Apple's Board of Directors tweaked Tim Cook's compensation package by adding a performance metric to his stock options.
In addition, there were a number of other SEC filings from Apple which disclosed that a number of top executives sold millions of dollars worth of Apple shares that had recently vested.

Tesla win in North Carolina paves the way for direct-to-consumer sales
Tesla Motors continues to buck the odds, celebrating a major victory in the North Carolina Senate this week. The North Carolina Automobile Dealers -- concerned about competition -- set its sights on the green car company last month when it endorsed a bill that would've significantly curtailed Tesla's ability to sell vehicles in the state. NoteSuite could replace Evernote, Skitch, Reminders, PDF apps and more
NoteSuite is available for Mac and iPad, and despite the lack of an iPhone client it is putting a number of apps on notice. In particular, a lot of the stuff I do with Evernote just got replaced by NoteSuite -- and I don't have to pay a subscription to do any of them. NoteSuite is a suite, in a way, but also a tightly integrated application with a ton of well thought out, useful and efficient tools. Imagine a PDF annotation app, note-taking app, reminder app, drawing app and outliner rolled into one. While there are a number of "multi-tool" note apps out there, a few features put NoteSuite far ahead of the competition.

Spotify confirms plans for original content at press event with Mayor Bloomberg
Spotify held a gathering in its movie poster-lined Chelsea offices this afternoon to announce that it would be increasing its presence in New York City. Part of the plan includes a brand new US headquarters on 6th Ave that is several times the size of its current space. Plants vs. Zombies 2 gets delayed, now coming later this summer
I got to see Plants vs. Zombies 2 running at E3, and the game looked essentially done. That's why this news is so surprising. PopCap has tweeted that the title has been delayed from its July 18 launch to "sometime later on this summer." Note that it will still premiere on iOS.
There could several reasons for this. Popcap is part of EA, so perhaps the title must go through extra quality reviews, or maybe July 18 conflicts with something else in EA's lineup. Wie Vodafone in einer Pressemitteilung berichtet, will das Unternehmen Kabel Deutschland für 7,7 Milliarden Euro kaufen. Durch den Kauf von Kabel-Deutschland würde ein Telekommunikationsanbieter entstehen, der mit seinen Privat- und Geschäftskunden einen Umsatz von 11,5 Milliarden Euro generieren wird. Foxconn demos self-made smartwatch with health, notification features

"Designed by Apple" ads falling flat with viewers
The "Designed by Apple" ads that have been filling the airwaves (and print media) recently are apparently falling as flat with viewers as a Jony Ive UI. A Bloomberg article says that survey data from consulting firm Ace Metrix shows that the latest ad -- which has only been around since June 10 -- "has earned the lowest score of 26 Apple TV ads in the past year."

Apple Proposes New Multifunction Input Ports, Could Merge SD Card Slot and USB Port
Apple has applied for a patent on a computer port that combines two connectors such as a USB port and a SD card reader according to an application recently published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and noticed by AppleInsider. The invention, which Apple calls a 'combined input port', adds contact surfaces for multiple different ports. One such example used in the application adds a SD card to the bottom of a standard USB port, with additional cuts to fit the SD card. The combined port could save room on smaller notebooks, and is one potential way for Apple to fit an SD card reader in the 11" MacBook Air.

Wii-Style iPhone Game 'Motion Tennis' Hits the App Store [iOS Blog]
Rolocule, which debuted its Rolomotion concept back in April, has launched its first game that uses the technology. The Rolomotion software is designed to convert an iPhone or an iPod touch into a motion controller, similar to a Nintendo Wii Remote. The first game to use the technology, Motion Tennis, hit the App Store this morning. UK general practitioners use iPad to diagnose dementia
Macworld UK reports that some physicians in the UK are using an iPad based app to help detect the early signs of dementia.
The Guildford and Waverley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is promoting the use of the CANTABmobile system to help improve dementia diagnosis rates.
CANTABmobile enables GPs to test a patient's episodic memory through an easy to use ten-minute cognitive assessment. Of the 21 GP practices in the Guildford and Waverley region, 19 have been provided with iPads and the software to assess patients who have concerns about their memory loss.

Foxconn zeigt iPhone-kompatible SmartWatch
Eine SmartWatch von Apples Zulieferer Foxconn versteht sich prächtig mit dem iPhone. Sie wurde nun im Rahmen einer Aktionärsversammlung vorgestellt und bietet die Möglichkeit Facebook-Nachrichten zu lesen, Anrufe anzunehmen und überträgt Vitalwerte wie Herzschlag und Atemfrequenz. Foxconn möchte offenbar nicht auf die iWatch warten. Stattdessen wurde nun ein eigenes Produkt des Herstellers im Rahmen einer Aktionärsversammlung vorgestellt. Die Foxconn-SmartWatch überträgt Daten drahtlos an das iPhone. Mit ihr kann man Facebook-Nachrichten lesen, Telefonanrufe am iPhone annehmen und entsprechende Fitness- oder Gesundheit-Apps mit Vitaldaten des Trägers füttern. AOL for iPad now in the App Store
AOL, the parent company of TUAW, Engadget, TechCrunch and Huffington Post, today announced the availability of AOL for iPad (free). While for many longtime internet users the AOL acronym may bring back nightmares of receiving daily CD-ROMs in the mail, the company is quickly turning into a very nimble content provider around the world.
The app was designed from the ground up for the iPad, featuring a tiled UI with stories that can be tapped to dive in deeper. Renesas to shutter the modem business it acquired from Nokia in 2010
Today, Renesas is announcing that it's going to "discontinue" the wireless unit it acquired from Nokia. 'Designed by Apple' ad scores low with test audiences
Apple's "Designed by Apple" TV ad isn't scoring well with test audiences, says consulting firm Ace Metrix. The spot scored just 489 on an Ace Metrix scale, the lowest among 26 Apple ads aired during the last year, and below even a 542-point industry average. In the past, some Apple campaigns have scored over 700. Each Ace Metrix survey is based on at least 500 TV viewers.

Apple has not announced an iWatch, as many folks hoped it would, and that didn't bother Foxconn. The company that manufactures most of Apple's iPhones and iPads has made its own iPhone-compatible smartwatch, which it showed off earlier this week. The watch looks relatively simple, but it can check your pulse and respiration, as well as interact with Facebook and Messages, all while your phone is still in your pocket.

Fehler in Apples Java-Update 2013-004 korrigiert
Letzte Woche hat Apple ein neues Update 2013-004 für Java veröffentlicht, das einen Fehler enthielt. Mittlerweile existiert eine korrigierte Version, Nutzer sollten unverzüglich updaten. Das Java-Update 2013-004 enthielt einen Bug, der bestimmte Java-Applikationen unter OS X funktionsunfähig machte. Apple hat den Fehler korrigiert und ein neues Update herausgegeben, doch Nutzer, die besonders schnell waren, könnten noch das alte Update installiert haben. Es wird empfohlen, nach Software-Aktualisierungen zu suchen. iTunes Radio: Apples Verträge mit Plattenfirmen enthüllt
iTunes Radio als Pandora-Konkurrenz für iPhone und iPad wird kommen. WSJ: Apple courting smaller labels for iTunes Radio
According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is looking to bring smaller music labels on board with iTunes Radio. Apple has reportedly offered deals to several labels, some of which are more generous than what competitor-to-be Pandora is offering.
The Journal says that Apple's payout to artists will be a combination of how often their songs are played (US$0.13 per play) as well as 15% advertising revenue generated by Apple. In the second year, those numbers will jump to $0.14 and 19% respectively. According to the Journal, Pandora pays out $0.12 per play.
Apple, of course, had no comment.

Guardian: NSA has collected online information for 'more than two years' under Obama administration
Today, The Guardian reported that the Obama administration has permitted the NSA to collect large amounts of Americans' online data -- including email records -- for more than two years. The shocker here is that the metadata collection program authorized by FISA was discontinued in 2011, but it appears that the same information-monitoring processes are still going strong. Wenn man schon als normaler Nutzer eine Beta-Version von iOS 7 aus Spaß an der Freude installieren muss, sollte man es wenigstens unterlassen Apps im App Store schlecht zu bewerten, nur weil diese unter der BETA-VERSION VON IOS 7 nicht funktionieren. Sony hat am Dienstag in Shanghai die zweite Generation der «SmartWatch» vorgestellt. Im Vergleich zum Vorgängermodell verfügt die «SmartWatch 2» über einen grösseren Bildschirm. Dieser 1.6-Zoll grosse Bildschirm verfügt über eine Auflösung von 220 mal 176 Pixel. Zudem hat sich Sony entschieden, die Display-Technologie zu wechseln. Anstelle eines OLED-Bildschirms wie bei der ersten Generation der SmartWatch verbaut Sony in der zweiten Generation ein entspiegeltes LCD-Display. Durch die Entspiegelung soll es auch im Freien problemlos möglich sein, die Daten vom LCD-Bildschirm abzulesen. Darüber hinaus hat Sony auch den Akku der SmartWatch optimiert.

Wenn man schon als normaler Nutzer eine Beta-Version von iOS 7 aus Spaß an der Freude installieren muss, sollte man es wenigstens unterlassen Apps im App Store schlecht zu bewerten, nur weil diese unter der BETA-VERSION VON IOS 7 nicht funktionieren. Apple has lost a motion to include the recently-launched Galaxy S4 among a list of infringing products in its second of two US lawsuits against Samsung. Adding another product would be a "tax on the court's resources," said Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal in a ruling earlier this week. Apple will pay royalties for iTunes Radio based on both how many times listeners hear a song, and how much advertising Apple sells, according to a report. iTunes Radio will pay labels 13 cents each time a song is played, in addition to 15 percent of net advertising revenue, “proportionate to a given label’s share of the music played on iTunes.” The rates will rise to 14 cents and 19 percent of ad revenue in the second year of iTunes…

Ein am Donnerstag aufgetauchtes Patent von Apple zeigt eindrücklich auf, wie sehr der Konzern bestrebt ist, immer mehr Funktionen auf engstem Raum unterzubringen. Square Market brings ecommerce to neighborhood businesses
Online payment processing system Square has launched a new expansion called Square Market, a webstore that allows users to set up their own digital shops. Each store makes its own page that includes the business's important information, from hours of operation to location, along with a cleanly designed storefront to display and sell items online. The page becomes a mini-webpage of sorts with links to social media like Twitter and contact information.
Stores are free to create, with the company taking a percentage of each sale, similar to the model its epayment system has. Its cut ends up being 2.75 percent from every sale, lower than many private credit card process payments and lower than the flat fee some other online stores charge per item.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 mit LCD wegen Display-Knappheit?
Samsung soll sein Android-Smartphone Galaxy Note 3 ebenfalls mit IPS-LCD-Displays produzieren wollen. Der Grund für diese Entscheidung liege in der Knappheit von OLED-Panels. As promised, the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 ëGoogle Play Editions' have gone on sale to US customers only through the Google Play store. Bei ihren Phishing-Versuchen gehen die Täter immer raffinierter vor, wie die Spezialisten beobachten. So werden angebliche Support-Mails vom vermeintlichen Absender «service@apple.com» oder «Apple Customer Support» verschickt. Diese Mails sind meist professionell geschrieben und enthalten das Logo von Apple. Die Nutzer werden daraufhin auf Webseiten weitergeleitet, welche derjenigen von Apple detailliert nachgebaut sind. «iTunes Radio»-Lizenzbedingungen für Independent-Labels veröffentlicht
Das Wall Street Journal berichtet unter Berufung auf ungenannte Quellen, dass Apple damit begonnen haben soll, unabhängigen Platten-Label ein Angebot zu unterbreiten, um auch ihr Musik-Katalog über «iTunes Radio» streamen zu können.
Apple ist anscheinend bereit, im ersten Jahr 0.13 US-Cent pro gespieltem Titel zu bezahlen. Zusätzlich sollen die unabhängigen Labels 15 Prozent der Netto-Werbeerlöse von Apple erhalten. Je öfter ein Song in «iTunes Radio» gespielt wird, desto höher wird die Vergütung der Labels ausfallen. Im zweiten Jahr könnte die Vergütung auf 0.14 US-Cent pro gespieltem Lied und 19 Prozent der Werbeerlöse steigen.

Apple verteilt zweite OS-X-10.8.5-Vorabversion an Entwickler
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute eine zweite Vorabversion von OS X 10.8.5 an registrierte Entwickler verteilt. Diese zweite Beta-Version von OS X 10.8.5 trägt die Build-Nummer 12F13. In den Release-Notes von Apple werden keine bekannten Fehler gelistet. Den Notes nach zu urteilen, wird das Update wohl keine neuen Funktionen sondern nur Fehlerbehebungen beinhalten. Erst vor einer Woche verteilte Apple die erste Beta-Version von 10.8.5 (12F9).
Die Entwickler sollen sich auch bei dieser neuen Vorabversion vor allem auf die Bereiche Wi-Fi und Grafik-Treiber, sowie die PDF-Anzeige und das Aufwachen nach dem Ruhezustand fokussieren. Neu sollen die Entwickler aber auch auf das Management von mobilen Geräten achten. Wi-Fi und Grafik-Treiber standen bereits bei den zahlreichen Vorabversionen von OS X 10.8.3 und 10.8.4 im Fokus der Updates.

Samsung hat in Korea den Marktstart eines 55-Zoll großen, gebogenen OLED-HDTVs bekanntgegeben. Damit schließt der Konzern an die Konkurrenz von LG auf, die Anfang dieses Monats ebenfalls ein solches Gerät ankündigte. „Tempora“: Anfrage von Justizministerin abgewiesen

Apple: iTunes store was down for 20 percent of iTunes users
For about an hour and 20 minutes earlier today, some 20 percent of users trying to access the iTunes Store and associated services such as the App Store and iBookstore were blocked from doing so due to a service outage, Apple reports. According to its Services Status page, the problem began at 7:25PT and lasted until 8:45PT this evening. Earlier in the day, a small (1.5) percentage of users were hit with a brief iCloud outage that lasted about 45 minutes in the late afternoon, Pacific Time.

iTunes mit Problemen am heutigen Morgen
Wie aus diversen Tweets hervorgeht, scheint Apple am Morgen ein Problem mit dem iTunes Store gehabt zu haben. Nutzer berichten, dass es ihnen am Morgen nicht möglich war, ein Lied herunterzuladen oder ein Update für eine App durchzuführen. Vom Ausfall betroffen war nicht nur der iTunes Store, sondern auch der App Store sowie der iBookstore.
Zum Ausfallzeitpunkt, welcher gemäss Apple von 4:25 Uhr bis 5:45 Uhr MESZ dauerte, konnten 20 Prozent der aktiven iTunes-Nutzer keine Käufe im iTunes Store tätigen. Die Geräte konnten auch nicht mit dem iTunes Store verbunden werden.
Bislang ist noch unklar, welche Probleme zum Teilausfall des iTunes Stores geführt haben.

WSJ: Indie labels being courted by Apple for iTunes Radio
A new report in the Wall Street Journal details the offer Apple is making to independent labels for its iTunes Radio service, one that is said to be nearly identical to the deal reached with the major labels. Under the terms of the agreement, Apple would pay a slightly more generous rate on songs streamed on the service than is currently paid by its main streaming competitor, Pandora. The latter company is actually seeking to cut the rate it pays for songs, claiming it cannot make a profit on its current 12 cents per 100 streams rate.

Apple applauds Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage
In the wake of the Supreme Court overturning the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), Apple issued a statement to All Things D praising the decision.
"Apple strongly supports marriage equality and we consider it a civil rights issue. We applaud the Supreme Court for its decisions today," an Apple spokesman told AllThingsD in a statement.

Apple's iTunes Radio Terms With Record Labels Revealed
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple sent its iTunes Radio terms to independent record labels last week and the paper was able to review a copy of the contract. It dictates that Apple will pay record labels both in royalties on individual song plays, as well as how much advertising Apple is able to sell. During iTunes Radio’s first year, Apple will pay a label 0.13 cents each time a song is played, as well as 15% of net advertising revenue, proportionate to a given label’s share of the music played on iTunes. In the second year, that bumps up to 0.14 cents per listen, plus 19% of ad revenue.That's compared to the 0.12 cents -- $0.0012 -- that Pandora pays labels per play, although the paper says Apple will be paying publishers more than twice as much in royalties than Pandora. For streaming music, publishers and record labels are paid independently.

AAPL closes below $400, but still ahead of moving average
Apple's stock has continued wavering in the marketplace, closing below $400 for the first time since mid-April on Wednesday and down some 43 percent from its all-time high of $705 nearly a year ago. While still trading higher than it was at the time of former CEO Steve Jobs' passing, many investors are puzzled at why a company with very solid fundamentals, a newly-announced generous dividend and buyback program, and a low price-to-earnings ratio would be doing relatively poorly. Retailers' growing relationship with Passbook
Apple's Passbook has had a rocky road. When it was first introduced in iOS 6, it seemed like an excellent idea. You could store all of your loyalty cards, tickets, and other mobile payment items all in one place. But in practice, Passbook hasn't been all that helpful. More research points to explosion of Android mobile malware
Confirming an earlier study by a different firm, a new report has found that 92 percent of mobile attacks are aimed at Android, with the number of attacks generated per year on a steady increase. The Juniper Networks study calls the 614 percent increase in attacks since March 2012 "staggering," with three out of five coming out of China or Russia.

Apple, Samsung spar over Presidential veto of iPhone ITC embargo
In a letter to the agency that President Obama has delegated the authority to override US International Trade Commission embargo orders, Apple is requesting a rare Presidential veto. The letter to the United States Trade Representative requests that a veto of the order banning import of the AT&T iPhone 4 and iPad 2 be entered, as the ITC ruling sets a dangerous precedent for future ITC rulings and "makes the ITC an outlier internationally and domestically" in its ongoing patent legal battles with Samsung.

Supreme Court refuses to hear Mirror Worlds' appeal to have damages award against Apple reinstated
Back in 2008, a company called Mirror Worlds filed a patent infringement suit against Apple alleging that a number of OS X features infringed upon one of its patents. The accused features included Cover Flow, Time Machine, and OS X's Spotlight search feature.
In October of 2010, Mirror Worlds won a $625.5 million judgement against Apple. At the time, the damages amount was the fourth largest patent judgement in U.S. history. Apple, naturally, appealed and in April of 2011 a federal judge reversed the judgement.
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court refused to consider Mirror Worlds' recent attempt to have $208.5 million of the damages award reinstated.

Apple argues that import ban against iPhones and iPads makes ITC an "outlier internationally and domestically"
In early June, Samsung rejoiced as the ITC handed down an order precluding Apple from importing AT&T models of the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4. Also included in the order were AT&T models of the original iPad and the iPad 2.
Because the ITC order is final, the only way to get around it is if a Presidential veto is issued.
At the time, Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said:
We are disappointed that the commission has overturned an earlier ruling and we plan to appeal. Today's decision has no impact on the availability of Apple products in the United States.

Apple seeds second OS X 10.8.5 beta build to developers, retail staff
The weekly updates of the next minor update to OS X Mountain Lion continue, with the second beta of OS X 10.8.5 being distributed to developers and Apple retail staff through the Mac Developer Center and the Mac App Store for those with developer or employee accounts. The release again focuses on bug fixes rather than new features, though there is some speculation that the forthcoming release could be the last for Mountain Lion as the company focuses on OS X Mavericks (10.9), the second Developer Preview of which was sent out on Tuesday.
