Die aktuell stattfindende Entwicklerkonferenz Google I/O könnte Gerüchten zufolge eine eigene Variante von Spotify präsentieren. Währenddessen schreiten die Arbeiten an Googles Nexus Q weiter voran, das Gerät soll aber noch nicht vorgestellt werden. Google+ Hangouts video chat won't connect over AT&T
If you have a smartphone connected to AT&T, you just got a bit more incentive to hop over to WiFi whenever possible. Apple drops below $400B in worth, Google surpasses $300B
Apple and Google both passed important financial milestones during Wednesday trading, notes The Next Web. While Apple's market value has fallen under $400 billion, Google's value has climbed over $300 billion. Apple marks 50 billion downloads from the App Store
You think 50 billion is a big number? It's certainly a bit bigger than some other numbers that spring to mind, such as 48 billion, and that in itself gives Apple something to celebrate. As is customary with these App Store milestones, whichever lucky jackanape triggered their download at just the right millisecond will receive a gift -- a $10,000 iTunes voucher, no less -- while 50 runners-up will get $500-worth of credit each.

Verizon Cuts Price on iPhone 5 by $100 for Some Customers [iOS Blog]
Verizon is offering a $100 discount on iPhone 5 upgrades to certain current Verizon customers, reports Gotta Be Mobile. The change makes the iPhone 5 available for $100 with a two-year contract, one of the lowest prices we've seen for the device. However, Verizon said the discount is only being offered to certain "basic phone customers [who] are interested in moving to a smartphone". The carrier did not elaborate on what qualifies customers for the deal and it also stressed that not every basic phone customer will be getting the offer, only those that it has identified as those who are interested in potentially upgrading to the iPhone 5. News: App Store hits 50 billion downloads
Apple’s App Store today reached 50 billion downloads, as noted by the end of the official countdown. As the site says, “The grand prize winner will be announced soon. Stay tuned.”

Google asks Microsoft to remove YouTube app for WP8, takes issue with lack of ads
YouTube only recently came to Windows Phone 8 as a full-fledged app, but its availability may be short-lived. According to documents obtained by The Verge, Google has requested that Microsoft remove the app from it Windows Phone Store -- and disable installations on devices -- immediately. The reason? Apparently the app didn't get Goog's stamp of approval before going live, and it blocks the ads that typically run on YouTube. Naturally, ads are an important source of revenue for both Google and no shortage of third parties, so Mountain View may not be out of line for crying foul. T

Studies: Android's malware, piracy problem growing
New research from F-Secure Labs on the prevalence of malware on smartphones, along with developer data on game app piracy rates paints a pretty clear -- and damning -- portrait of Android compared to other mobile platforms. The growth in mobile malware on Google's platform is increasing at such a pace that the malware threat is approaching the relative level of compromised Windows systems, while the rampant piracy is driving developers away and making paid apps scarce in favour of the "freemium" model.

Apple's Stocks app on iOS isn't terribly exciting, but in typical Apple fashion, it does have a bit more functionality lurking beneath the surface.
Pictured below is what you typically see when you fire up the Stocks app.
The information is pretty basic. We see that Apple's current share price is $456, and to the right of that in green we see how much Apple's share price has gone up for the day, in this case $3.98.

Verizon briefly posted a $100 pricetag for the 16GB iPhone 5 on its website this morning, says AppleInsider. The phone typically sells for $199 with a two-year contract, which was also a stipulation for the $100 cost. Apple sued over faulty power button on iPhone 4
A Florida woman named Debra Hilton recently filed a class action suit against Apple alleging that the power button on the iPhone 4 sports a manufacturing defect that Apple is well aware of and chose not to fix. The suit specifically claims that the iPhone 4's flex cable is defective and designed to cause the power button to malfunction shortly after the 1-year warranty on the device expires, thereby forcing users to either get it repaired for $149 or spring for an entirely new device.
The complaint reads in part:

Google Play Game Services services to support iOS
This morning at Google I/O the company announced that Google Play is coming to iOS. No, not the Android store, but Google Play Game Services -- a new group of application programming interfaces (APIs) the company is releasing to developers today. The APIs allows gamers to pick up their games across platforms, meaning if some is playing a game on an Android phone and it dies, their game state is uploaded to the cloud allowing them to pick up where they left off on an iPhone.

Google Play Game Services synchroniseren Spielstände zwischen iOS und Android
Google hat unter dem Titel “Google Play Game Services” neue Programmierschnittstellen für Spieleentwickler veröffentlicht. Das Interessante: Die APIs können Spiele über die Plattformen iOS und Android hinweg miteinander verbinden.

Belkin WeMo rolls out IFTTT multi-device control
TUAW readers know of my affinity for Belkin WeMo home automation tools, whether I'm using them to get Siri to turn on the Christmas tree or keep my cat cool in the summer. Today Belkin announced IFTTT multi-device control for WeMo switches.
What does that mean? It means that you can now control more than just one WeMo switch in your house with IFTTT recipes. Google Now updated with reminders, real-time public transit updates
Google Now is getting some I/O love, too. Several updates, called cards, are already available in the Google Play Store. You'll be able to set reminders for nagging pop-ups ("buy milk" is the obvious example). Now will also show you cards for upcoming books, albums and TV shows based on what Google thinks you'll like -- which could either be quite helpful or exasperating depending on how well it knows you accuracy. Google's conversational voice search reaches the desktop through Chrome
We're used to Google's mobile search apps letting us ask questions as we would with real people, but the desktop has usually been quite stiff. That's changing today: Google is bringing conversation-like voice search to our computers through Chrome, with no typing required. Web denizens just have to say "okay, Google," ask their question, and get back a spoken response similar to what they'd hear on their phones. Google today officially announced its new music subscription service, Google Play Music All Access, at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco. As reported yesterday afternoon, the service is designed to compete with Spotify, providing songs on demand that can be streamed to a computer or mobile device. Study: iPhone retains value better than top Galaxy models

Apple vs. Samsung: Nun auch Galaxy S4 Teil des Rechtsstreites
Apple hat am Montag bekannt gegeben, dass das neu erschienene «Samsung Galaxy S4» auch Teil des zweiten grossen Rechtsstreites zwischen Apple und Samsung sein wird. Android 4.3 confirmed as Google kicks off its I/O conference
We've still got about an hour and 20 minutes until the Google I/O keynote begins, but we're already starting to get hints of what's to come. The company just revealed, in an indirect sort of way, that the next-gen version of Android will be Android 4.3. The name popped up on one of Google's developer pages, which ended up being cached despite the fact that it wasn't live for very long. Unfortunately, that page didn't reveal much in the way of actual features, but it looks like we'll find out in 76 minutes and counting.

PC-Absatz im ersten Quartal 2013 um über 20 Prozent rückläufig
In Westeuropa wurden laut einer Studie des Gartner Instituts im ersten Quartal 2013 rund 12,3 Millionen PCs ausgeliefert. Das ist ein Rückgang um 20,5 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal. Gartner: Apples Smartphone-Marktanteil fällt unter 20 Prozent
Die Analysten von Gartner veröffentlichten am Dienstag die neusten Schätzungen zum globalen Smartphone-Markt. Im ersten Quartal wurden demnach über 210 Millionen Smartphones verkauft, was einer Steigerung von 42 Prozent im Vergleich zum ersten Quartal 2012 entspricht.
Trotz einer Steigerung des Absatzes von über fünf Millionen Geräten auf 38.3 Millionen iPhones ist es Apple nicht gelungen, den Marktanteil zu halten. Während Apples Marktanteil am globalen Smartphone-Markt im ersten Quartal 2012 noch 22.5 Prozent betrug, beträgt der aktuelle Marktanteil 18.2 Prozent. Das Wachstum im Vergleich zum Vorjahr war mit 15 Prozent allerdings ebenfalls unter dem Marktdurchschnitt.
Als einziger der fünf grössten Smartphone-Hersteller musste Apple eine Einbusse beim Marktanteil hinnehmen. Diese Zahlen dürfte denjenigen Analysten Auftrieb geben, welche

Justice Department calls Apple the "ringmaster" in e-book price fixing case
Back in April of 2012, the US Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple and a number of publishers for allegedly colluding to raise the price of e-books on the iBookstore.
The original suit targeted five publishing companies; Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin and Simon & Schuster. While Macmillan and Penguin were initially keen on fighting the allegations, all five publishers have since settled with the US Justice Department.
As such, Apple is the last man standing.
As part of its investigation into Apple's actions, the Justice Department collected evidence which it claims demonstrates that Apple was the "ringmaster" in a price fixing conspiracy.

Target Disk Mode — Mac als Thunderbolt- oder FireWire-Festplatte benutzen
Bei allen Macs mit FireWire- oder Thunderbolt-Anschluss erlaubt OS X die Nutzung des Computers im sogenannten «Target Disk Mode». Durch diesen Modus kann ein Mac an einem anderen Mac als FireWire-/Thunderbolt-Festplatte benutzt werden.
Um den Target-Disk-Modus zwischen zwei Macs benutzen zu können, benötigt man ein FireWire-zu-FireWire oder ein Thunderbolt-zu-Thunderbolt-Kabel. Sind die beiden Macs miteinander verkabelt, kann der Modus auf jenem Mac, der als Festplatte benutzt werden soll, in den Systemeinstellungen unter «Startvolume» über die Schaltfläche «FireWire-Festplattenmodus …» aktiviert werden, nach einem Neustart versetzt sich der Mac selbstständig in den Target-Disk-Modus — erkennbar an einem grossen FireWire-Logo auf dem Bildschirm (bei Thunderbolt-Geräten sind es ein FireWire- und ein Thunderbolt-Logo).

Tipp: Menüleiste antippen um nach oben zu scrollen
Kleiner aber feiner Trick für scrolling-müde iOS-Benutzer: Wer in einer iOS-App eine lange Seite bzw. Inhalt betrachtet, kann durch einfaches antippen der Menüleiste wieder an den Anfang des Fensters/Inhaltes gelangen.
Aufgrund einer fehlerhaften Implementierung einer WebKit-spezifischen CSS-Funktion* funktioniert dieser «Trick» auf Webseiten, die von dieser Funktion gebrauch machen, nicht.Da macprime.ch diese nützliche CSS-Funktion nutzt, funktioniert der Tipp ausgerechnet auf unserer Seite nicht. Bis 6.1.x wurde das Problem von Apple noch nicht behoben.

Tipp: Spotlight schnell aufrufen
Die globale Suche in OS X kann über das Lupen-Symbol in der Menüleiste schnell aufgerufen werden. Noch schneller — nämlich ohne den Umweg über die Maus oder das Trackpad — lässt sich die Suche in der Menüleiste über den Tastaturkurzbefehl ⌘Leertaste starten.
Ein neues Spotlight-Fenster kann über den Tastaturkürzel ⌘⌥Leertaste aufgerufen werden.
Da es sich bei diesen beiden Tastenkombinationen um globale Kürzel handelt, funktionieren sie auch bei der Benutzung fremder Applikationen — auch im Vollbildmodus.
Die Tastaturkürzel können in den Einstellungen unter Tastatur : Tastaturkurzbefehle jederzeit geändert werden.

iPhone 4: Defekter Netzschalter ein Serienfehler

BlackBerry Messenger ab Sommer auch für iOS
BlackBerry kündigte anlässlich der «BlackBerry Live»-Konferenz eine Erweiterung der hauseigenen Nachrichtenplattform «BlackBerry Messenger» an. Ab Sommer wird die Nachrichtenplattform nicht mehr nur für BlackBerrys zur Verfügung stehen, sondern auch für iOS- und Android-Geräte. Gemäss BlackBerry müssen die Geräte mindestens über iOS 6 oder Android 4.0 verfügen, damit der «BlackBerry Messenger» installiert werden kann. Google to Unveil Streaming Music Service at Google I/O Tomorrow
Google is set to announce a new music subscription service tomorrow at its annual Google I/O conference, reports The Verge, having finalized deals with Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment., and Warner Music Group. The service is said to be a direct Spotify competitor, offering up songs on demand that can be streamed to a computer or mobile device for a set monthly fee. My birthday was last week on May 6, and Firaxis must have heard about that because in recent weeks they've released not one but two great turn-based strategy games. Finger Tied Jr. coming next week
Finger Tied is an iPad app that arrived late last year. It's put together by developer Owen Goss, and he says that a lot of users have asked him to create an iPhone version of the app, but given that it's a game that uses the iPad's big screen for lots of finger-swiping space, he didn't want to make it until he was sure he could do it justice.

Apple möchte Samsung Galaxy S4 in US-Patent-Gerichtsverfahren aufnehmen
Medienberichten zufolge möchte Apple, bereits wenige Wochen nach dem Erscheinen des Galaxy S4, dieses in ein bereits laufendes Gerichtsverfahren gegen Samsung in den USA mit aufnehmen. With this review, I think that we're just about through the Spring 2013 crop of iPad Bluetooth keyboard folio cases, and it appears that I've saved the best for last. Tim Cook coffee meet auction ends with $610,000 bid
A charity auction for a coffee meetup with Apple CEO Tim Cook has come to a close. The initial goal of the auction, supporting the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, was to raise roughly $50,000. By the time bidding closed today however, the final bid was valued at $610,000.
