ConnectED program could deliver 100Mbps broadband to 99 percent of US students

Apple to start first-party iPhone trade-ins later in June
Apple is planning to launch its own iPhone trade-in program later this month, sources say. The company is reportedly partnering with Brightstar, a phone distributor that already takes care of trade-ins at carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile, as well as some phone makers. Although the program means paying for used hardware, it could encourage people to upgrade to new products; AT&T for example is paying up to $200 for a working iPhone 4 or 4S, which is enough to cover a 16GB iPhone 5 on contract.

Accessory maker launches 'iPad 5' cases ahead of WWDC
A US accessory maker, Hard Candy Cases, has announced a pair of "iPad 5" cases, even though Apple has yet to debut the tablet. Hard Candy says it expects the device to be revealed during Apple's WWDC keynote on June 10th, and is taking a "gamble" that its cases -- the ShockDrop and the Squish -- reflect the hardware's final design. OS X 10.9 Build Number Suggests Extensive Internal Development
While many had expected Apple to follow last year's pattern and release a developer preview of OS X 10.9 early this year ahead of a summer public launch, the company has so far remained essentially silent about its plans for its next-generation Mac operating system. That silence does not, however, mean that Apple has not been working hard on the project since it first started showing up in web logs last fall. As spotted by an AppleInsider reader, circumstantial evidence of Apple's work showed up in a WebKit bug report early last month revealing that version of OS X 10.9 in testing was Build 13A451. Development Team Led by John Gruber Releases New Note-Taking App Vesper [iOS Blog]

Vesper simply collects and organizes your thoughts
Vesper (US$4.99) is a new iPhone app designed for the sole purpose of collecting and organizing your thoughts in a logical manner, and if the all-star development team is any indication, it should be a cutting-edge app with a modern, intuitive UI. Reuters: Apple to show off iRadio streaming service next week
Reuters is reporting that among the announcements we'll see at next week's WWDC keynote, Apple will introduce a new music streaming service called iRadio. The service will be free and ad-supported, Reuters says those in the know claimed, and will feature ads from the iAds team. The service is designed to dive into the already crowded market of music-streaming services, which includes Pandora, Rdio, Spotify, Slacker Radio and a number of other sizable options.

Mit iPhone überwachen: Airbus stellt intelligenten Koffer Bag2Go vor
Airbus hat einen Prototyp eines Koffers namens Bag2Go der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert. OS X 10.9 vor Fertigstellung?
Aus einem Bug-Report für Webkit geht eine Buildnummer für ein Mac-OS-X-Betriebssystem hervor, die auf eine baldige Fertigstellung von OS X 10.9 schließen lässt. Ein Mac-Entwickler und Leser der Kollegen von AppleInsider hat in einem Bug-Report die Buildnummer 13A451 für ein Betriebssystem gefunden. Vergleicht man diese mit internen Buildnummern vorheriger Golden Master von Mac OS X, dann könnte OS X 10.9 schon bald fertiggestellt werden. Deutlich wird, dass die ersten 2/3 Ziffern die Version des Betriebssystems markieren und die letzten drei Ziffern einer internen Versionsnummer entsprechen. BlackBerry denies June 27th date for Messenger on iOS, Android
The iOS and Android versions of BlackBerry Messenger will launch on June 27th, according to a now-deleted tweet by T-Mobile UK. BlackBerry recently announced that the apps would arrive this summer, but without a specific date. SugarSync has introduced a new Remote Wipe feature for its cloud storage service. First offered to business account customers last month, the Remote Wipe feature is now rolling out to all users. OpenFeint developer aims for a hardcore audience with Fates Forever MOBA
Jason Citron is a true veteran of iOS gaming. He was one of the two developers behind Aurora Feint, and later vaulted it up to the huge social network that OpenFeint became. Now, Citron is back to making games with a new company called Hammer & Chisel (formerly Pheonix Guild), and he's just announced today that his upcoming game is called Fates Forever. Las Vegas' Fashion Show Apple Store to undergo major expansion
The Apple Store in Fashion Show mall in Las Vegas is set to undergo major expansion and renovation, according to ifoAppleStore. By the end of the month the current location of the Fashion Show store will be moved to a new temporary location in the same mall. While the store is at its new temporary location the old location will be dramatically renovated and expanded.

Airbus Unveils Prototype iPhone-Enabled Smart Luggage [iOS Blog]
Airplane manufacturer Airbus has previewed an iPhone-enabled smart luggage prototype called 'Bag2Go' that uses a number of new technologies to help airlines and flyers keep track of baggage, reports Australian Business Traveler. The bags include RFID chips for next-generation airline baggage handling and a barcode that syncs with an iPhone app that includes a 'Find My Bag' feature that hooks into airline databases to give you up-to-the-minute data on the bags location. They also have a digital scale built into the handle of the bag that talks to the iPhone's app. Flyers simply lift up on the handle and the digital scale makes sure the bag is beneath an airline's weight limit. The airline believes the bags would cost some 20% more than comparable 'dumb' bags.

webOS to receive mandatory system update to maintain access to cloud services
It's not exactly the best birthday present ever, but today HP announced that webOS devices running version 2.1 and up will receive an automatic update to the App Catalog. The new code is needed to replace security certificate set to expire on July 23 that grants access to webOS cloud services. For the select few running older versions of webOS, fear not, for updating your devices merely requires manual navigation to the App Catalog, then grab and install the "HP App Catalog Update" application. Intel Shows Off Prototype 128GB Thunderbolt Thumb Drive [Mac Blog]
Intel introduced a 128GB Thunderbolt thumb drive at the Computex trade show in Taipei today, reports PCWorld. The drive, which Intel is calling the "world's fastest thumb drive," is similar in size to a standard flash drive and does not require an expensive Thunderbolt cable to connect to a Mac or PC. This is one of the first thumb drives demonstrated using Thunderbolt connectivity, which is the fastest technology available to transfer data between computers and peripherals, said Oren Huber, a Thunderbolt engineer at Intel Israel. Reuters sources back iRadio debut at WWDC, audio ads
Apple is indeed planning to launch a streaming music service at WWDC next week, and carry audio ads on it, according to new sources. One of the people tells Reuters that Apple has contacted some of its bigger advertisers, but hasn't started selling the service extensively. The sources also back reports that the service - often nicknamed iRadio -- will resemble Pandora in its revenue scheme, and feature both audio and banner ads, sold through iAd.

Apple argues it was "indifferent" to Amazon's e-book pricing
Apple's trial with the U.S government over allegations that Apple was the "ringleader" in a conspiracy to increase the price of e-books on the iBookstore is a doozy. The Justice Department on Monday laid out its case with a series of 81 slides which it claims show that Apple ran afoul of anti-trust law by using questionable tactics to rope five big time publishers into the agency model of e-book pricing.

Xbox One gamepad goes into low power sleep mode during movies, when you step away
The Xbox One controller isn't full of new bells and whistles, but it does have a few new tricks up its sleeves. The new gamepad can apparently go into a low power sleep mode, "if you're watching a movie or need to step away from the TV," according to a feature at Microsoft's official Xbox site. The controller will then re-awaken "the moment" it's picked up, the piece claims, and won't require resynchronization.

Back in mid May, we reported that BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) would soon be making its way to both iOS and Android as a free download.
And now, thanks to a tweet from T-Mobile UK, it appears that BBM fans have something to look forward to on June 27.

As noted by MacStories, Dropbox yesterday unveiled new beta versions of its desktop clients, bringing several new features to Mac users including a streamlined method for storing and sharing screenshots.The first one, an automatic screenshot sharing feature, is somewhat reminiscent of tools like Droplr and CloudApp: once enabled in the Preferences, it will allow Dropbox to redirect every screenshot taken on OS X to a /Screenshots folder in your Dropbox, sharing that file and putting a public link in your system clipboard. While not as full-featured as the aforementioned third-party tools, automatic screenshot sharing could indeed make for a nice solution to quickly share screenshots on Twitter and IM — retaining control over files that are simply located in the Finder.

Earlier this week, we told you that Apple has begun repairing iPhone displays in its retail stores for US$149 each. The iPhone is obviously nothing without its display. Replacement must be done accurately and the display has to be calibrated perfectly in order for things to look just right. Der bekannte Marktanalyst Michael Pachter hat in einem Interview seine Einschätzung zu den Startpreisen für die Sony PlayStation 4 und die Microsoft Xbox One preisgegeben. Apple & Co. sollen den Diebstahlschutz ihrer Geräte verbessern
Im Mai wandte sich der New Yorker Generalstaatsanwalt Eric Schneiderman in einem Brief an Apple, Google und andere IT-Konzerne, um mehr über ihre Anstrengungen in Bezug auf den Diebstahl von Smartphones und anderen elektronischen Geräten zu erfahren. Unreal Engine 4 now supports the Oculus Rift VR headset, Epic Games announced this morning. The move comes as part of an "Integrated Partners Program," which also adds support from a variety of other middleware companies (Autodesk, IDV, and NVIDIA to name just a few). Apple timed its bond sale perfectly
In late April, Apple raised $17 billion as part of a bond sale to help finance its $55 billion stock repurchasing program and increased dividend payouts.
A common question at the time was why a company like Apple, with over $145 billion in the bank, would need to raise money at all. The short of it is that much of Apple's cash lies overseas and the company would incur a 35% tax hit if it chose to repatriate it back to the U.S. As a result, Apple found it more economical to take advantage of historically low interest rates and borrow the money instead. In other words, the interest on its newly acquired debt is much lower than the tax hit it would otherwise take by using its own funds.

TextWrangler updated to version 4.5.2
As TidBITS kindly notes, TextWrangler has been updated to version 4.5.2, and the latest update is available for download right now. As you can see from the release notes, there are lots and lots of different bugfixes in this one, including problems with the Clipboard, various menu and display graphics, and some issues with saving and opening files.
TextWrangler is, of course, the free "little brother" to BBEdit, still a very powerful and capable text editor on its own. BBEdit itself was also updated recently, with the latest version numbered 10.5.

Images of an alleged Nokia EOS have leaked from what appears to be a factory, lending some credence to previous rumors of a camera-centric handset from the Finnish outfit. Apple und THX wollen sich aussergerichtlich einigen
Zwischen Apple und THX soll es momentan Gespräche geben, um den Patentstreit, welcher von THX gestartet worden ist, aussergerichtlich beizulegen. Beim Patentstreit geht es um das Design der Lautsprecher der neuen iMacs, welche angeblich ein Patent von THX verletzen.
Die beiden Parteien haben dem Gericht einen Antrag zugestellt, in welchem sie die Verschiebung der ersten Anhörung vom 14. Juni auf den 26. Juli verlangen. Im Antrag wird als Grund für das Verschiebungsgesuch die andauernden Verhandlungen zwischen den beiden Unternehmen genannt.
Wie gross die Chancen für eine Einigung sind, ist noch nicht klar. Eine aussergerichtliche Einigung ist aber in jedem Fall kostengünstiger und schneller abgeschlossen als der klassische Gerichtsweg.

ZTE MF90: Neuer LTE-Hotspot

Leider nicht in Deutschland, zumindest aktuell, ist der neue LTE-Hotspot von ZTE verfügbar. Bis zu zehn User/Geräte können sich via WiFi über den MG90 ins Internet einklinken, Maximalgeschwindigkeit: 100 Mbps. Dabei wird ein Großteil der weltweit aktiven LTE-Frequenzen unterstützt, ebenso 3G und 2G. Vier Stunden soll der 2.300mAh-Akku durchhalten. Zugang gibt es sowohl über 2,4 GHz als auch über 5 GHz. Eine Einführung des MF90 in Europa ist zumindest angedacht.

Googles CalDAV-API bleibt weiterhin für alle offen

USA: Was man über die eBook-Klage wissen muss
In New York steht Apple für einmal nicht aufgrund eines Patentstreits vor dem Richter, sondern wegen einer wettbewerbsrechtlichen Auseinandersetzung. Die US-Wettbewerbsbehörden werfen Apple vor, mit einigen US-Buchverlagen ein Kartell gebildet zu haben, um die eBook-Preise künstlich hochhalten zu können. Dabei sollen die amerikanischen Konsumenten um mehrere Millionen US-Dollar geprellt worden sein.
Ähnlich wie bei der früheren schweizerischen Buchpreisbindung einigten sich die grossen Verlage und Apple beim sogenannten «Agentur-Modell» auf die Festlegung der Preise durch die Verlage. Gleichzeitig sicherte sich Apple eine Provision von 30 Prozent sowie eine Preisgarantie. Apple wollte zu jedem Zeitpunkt die besten Konditionen beim Einkauf der eBooks erhalten. A twin-headed USB drive called iTwin Connect, which allows private and public VPN services using a thumb drive dongle, is now available for Mac users running OS X Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion alongside Windows users. Amazon accuses Apple of hindering Kindle at DOJ e-book trial
On the third day of the e-book trial brought by the Department of Justice against Apple, the judge heard from an Amazon executive who claimed that Apple's proposal of a shift to the "agency model" of e-book pricing (where publishers set the price rather than retailers) was intended to hurt sales of Amazon's Kindle e-reader and its success as a seller of e-books. Judge Denice Cote, who is conducting the bench trial, also heard from Apple lawyers that the length of negotiations and differences in the contracts it had with publishers prove that it did not collude to set prices.

Daily iPhone App: Dead Ahead races through a stylish zombieland
Dead Ahead is a game released by Chillingo a few weeks ago, and it's been huge in the App Store charts lately. It's an endless running game where you're actually on a moped (or, later, a motorcycle), racing through a zombie-ridden apocalypse. The game's controls are excellently simple (you move your finger up and down the screen to steer, and then there are two buttons to race forward or shoot backwards), but the biggest draw here is the game's aesthetic, which uses a very stylistic look to add a little bit of whimsy to a pretty spooky zombie setting.

Las Vegas' Fashion Show Apple Store Getting Major Expansion [Mac Blog]
The Fashion Show Apple Store, one of Apple's earlier stores opened in 2002, is set to undergo a major expansion that will nearly triple the store's square footage, reports ifoAppleStore, taking it from 3,900 square feet to over 10,000 square feet. As ifoAppleStore notes, the store sits in front of the Fashion Show mall's key feature: a lighted stage where fashion shows are held every weekend. The expanded store, which will also boast a storefront almost four times as big as the current store, will be more ready to accommodate the mall's 13 million annual visitors at the busiest part of the mall. Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions updated, on sale for half price
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions arrived on iOS a little while ago, and it's long been lauded as one of the best tactical strategy games out there. And there are two good reasons you should check it out right now if you haven't yet. First and foremost, the game just got updated. There are now better graphics in the game than ever before, all meant for higher resolution Retina Displays. The update also adds improvements to the game's animations, and iCloud integration has been improved as well. Apple Retail's New Machines for Calibrating Replacement iPhone 5 Displays [iOS Blog]
Earlier this week, we noted that Apple had begun in-store repairs of iPhone 5 displays, a $149 procedure that is part of an effort by Apple to revamp its AppleCare and warranty services. We had been told that Apple had sent new equipment to the stores in order to allow Geniuses to calibrate the replacement displays once they had been installed, and 512 Pixels has now shared a photo of one of those machines installed in the back-of-house area of an Apple retail store.From what I’ve heard, Apple Stores have been instructed that the iPhone is the “top priority” for the Genius Bar, and this new repair — and crazy machine — surely reflects that. Leaked court documents reveal NSA is collecting bulk call logs from Verizon
A court document published today by The Guardian reveals the NSA is currently collecting call records in bulk from Verizon. The request, granted by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court on April 25th, extends until July 19th and mandates Verizon produce all call detail records on a daily basis to the NSA. The data collected includes the numbers of both parties to a call, how long it lasted, location data, IMEI / IMSI numbers, but not the content of the call or identifying information about the customer. Briefly: Kindle for iOS, iTunes Festival app, Quark Xpress deal
Amazon has updated its Kindle app for iOS to make two small but significant changes. The first allows users to change the line spacing on e-books as well as the margins, to facilitate easier reading. Another change in the new version 3.8 is the ability to make multi-page highlights of longer passages or those that break between pages. Some accessibility improvements have been made (a larger maximum font size for example), and there have been improvements made in Print Replica Textbooks' notebooks -- new filters and the ability to sync starred notes between devices.

Microsoft teams up with financial services industry, FBI to take down hacker botnets
It turns out Microsoft was serious when it declared war on botnets: the company just announced that its Digital Crimes Unit has successfully disrupted more than 1,400 criminal networks. The company says the action was a coordinated effort between Microsoft and the financial services industry, noting that the FBI chipped in to help out with legal hurdles -- giving Redmond the leverage it needed to shut down malicious servers in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania. TWC gives same access as iOS, Android users to web interface streamers
An update today by Time Warner Cable to its web portal has enabled the site's users and cable subscribers to access select On Demand and live TV channels from any internet connection, not just the users' homes. The new utility is now parallel to the recent TWC TV app on the iOS and Android, and is available to both Mac and PC users.

Seagate releases 5mm-thick 500GB 2.5-inch hard drive
Seagate has launched a new line of ultra slim 2.5-inch form factor hard disk drives. The new Seagate Laptop Ultrathin line of drives are 5.1mm thick, 3.3 ounces, and come in a maximum capacity of 500GB. Manufacturers Dell and Lenovo have confirmed that some of the Computex-revealed line of products will use this drive.

Report: iPhone still top seller at AT&T, Galaxy S4 everywhere else
On the heels of a recent study showing the Android platform losing ground in US marketshare to rival Apple, Canaccord Genuity has released data showing that Samsung's Galaxy S4 took the top seller position at three of the four major US carriers' outlets in May -- with the exception being AT&T, where the eight-month-old iPhone 5 continues to be the most popular model. The survey, which only checked direct carrier stores' sales of handsets, gave the S4 the top spot at Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon, with the iPhone in second place at all three.

You Don't Know Jack maker Jellyvision becomes Jackbox Games
Jellyvision Games has been making variations of You Don't Know Jack for a while now, which is of course the irreverant and very popular trivia game. The title originally began as a series of PC and Mac games, though of course Jellyvision has taken the series to consoles, and then more recently to Facebook and iOS. Now, after nearly twenty years of work, the company has decided to rebrand itself, and Jellyvision is going to become Jackbox Games.
The new branding makes a lot of sense: It definitely allows the company to focus on You Don't Know Jack and that brand, and it sets the company up as a multiplatform studio. Jellyvision always was, but this should give Jackbox a chance to do more wit

Drosselt Apple Downloadgeschwindigkeit bei iPhone und iPad in USA?
Ein Entwickler behauptet, Apple würde die Downloadgeschwindigkeit für iPhone und iPad in den US-Hochgeschwindigkeits-Mobilfunknetzen von AT&T, Sprint und Verizon künstlich drosseln. Die Hochgeschwindigkeits-Netzwerke von T-Mobile in den USA seien von der künstlichen Drosselung der Downloadgeschwindigkeit nicht betroffen, behauptet Joseph Brown von iTweakiOS. Zumindest aber konnte Brown im iOS-Quellcode keine analogen Hinweise zu einer Drosselung finden, wie er es im Fall von AT&T, Sprint und Verizon konnte. Time Warner updates browser version of TWC TV to allow for out-of-home viewing
For Time Warner Cable subscribers, sly on-the-job TV-watching is about to get easier (don't lie, we know you do it). Starting today, the browser version of TWC TV will offer on-demand and live content from any internet connection, in a move that mirrors the company's mobile app upgrade back in April. Previously, Time Warner Cable customers were restricted to using TWCTV.com inside their homes, but the shackles are now somewhat looser.

AMD doch offen für Android und Chrome OS
AMD hat seine Meinung bezüglich der Prozessorproduktion für Android- und Chrome-OS-Systeme seit letztem Herbst radikal geändert. Letzten Herbst soll AMD noch wenig Sinn darin gesehen haben, seine Hondo-Chip-Serie für Tablets auf Android- oder Chrome-OS-Systeme anzupassen. Nun aber dringen andere Töne aus dem Munde des Chipherstellers. Gegenüber den Kollegen von PC World ließ Lisa Su von AMD auf der Computex wissen, dass die Firma Windows 8 zugeneigt sei und man außerdem einen Markt für Android und Chrome OS sich entwickeln sieht. Weitere Details über einen möglichen Veröffentlichungszeitpunkt erster Android-Tablets mit AMD-CPU wurden darüber nicht bekannt.

Aperture updated to v3.4.5, fixes memory card ejection issue
Shortly after releasing an update to iTunes, Apple also unveiled a minor update to Aperture, its pro-level photo-management and editing program. Like the previous few updates, version 3.4.5 fixes a few issues and includes the usual stability improvements. The new update corrects an issue that could cause Aperture to quit unexpectedly when deleting items from a camera or memory card after import, as well as ejects memory cards correctly when using the Delete Items option after import.
