RunKeeper for iOS gets new social feed and leaderboard

The fitness app RunKeeper already lets you check stats on your smartwatch, but what is activity tracking without a public shaming social component? Starting today, the iOS version of the app includes a new feed for viewing your friends' logged workouts along with your own, complete with the ability to comment on and "like" activities à la Facebook. Editorial: The subtexts of Apple's WWDC keynote

Monday's much-anticipated WWDC keynote was Apple's most crucial presentation in years. AAPL stock has fallen 37 percent over nine months. Android has grown into a monstrous competing platform, differentiating along the lines of lower cost, variety of devices and appealing operating-system features. In this sharp-elbowed environment, Apple has been widely accused of losing its innovation mojo, and of over-reaching with premium product concepts and prices, in what is increasingly viewed as a commodity tech category. Pandora isn't afraid of iTunes Radio

After years of speculation, Apple on Monday finally released iTunes Radio, Cupertino's take on a streaming music recommendation service. iTunes Radio, of course, is entering a market already populated by some heavy-hitting competition, namely Pandora and Spotify. Watching Apple through the lens of public perception, it would be easy to buy into the idea that the company has been under siege of late. But even if that were the case, it's clear that Apple isn't buying the hype. Each of the executives who took to the stage on Monday conveyed, to a one, both excitement and confidence about the future direction of Apple--and they brought the announcements to prove it.Related StoriesWWDC 2013 keynote will be streamed live on Apple website, Apple TV

Grab the OS X Mavericks wallpaper now

That beautiful image of a cresting wave that you've seen on banners and promo shots of OS X 10.9 Mavericks is meant to represent the surfing spot that the OS is named after. As with all OS X operating systems, Apple usually spotlights one wallpaper as the default desktop image for marketing material. This image is always included as a new wallpaper in the OS when it ships. However, if you don't want to wait for OS X 10.9 Mavericks in the fall, you can download the wallpaper directly from Apple now. What's interesting about this wallpaper is that it comes in 5,120 x 2880 resolution, which is higher than the resolution of any Mac currently on the market. Is this a sign of Retina display iMacs t

iOS 7's 'Activation Lock' Delivers Cautious Optimism to Officials Concerned Over Mobile Device Thefts

One of the new iOS 7 features introduced by Craig Federighi at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote yesterday was Activation Lock, which aims to reduce the appeal of Apple devices to thieves by preventing stolen phones from being activated by new users. There's one feature I want to talk about in a little more detail, which is Activation Lock. So, hundreds of millions of use Find My iPhone to find our phone when it's just lost in the couch, or maybe left at Starbucks, but also when it's been stolen. And now, with Activation Lock, if a thief tries to turn off Find My iPhone, or if they even wipe the device entirely, they will not be able to reactivate it because they don't know your iCloud user name and password. We think this is going to be a really powerful theft deterrent. App

Wired and the design behind the iOS 7

On the heels of its iOS 7 coverage, Wired has taken the time to dive into the story about how the overhaul to Apple's iOS platform came to be. Instead of retreading the old route from Scott Forstall to Jony Ive, the magazine explores the psychological justification of skeuomorphism and how modern design, such as what Ive and Steve Jobs embraced, came to be. It looks at how Apple needs to go beyond from getting people used to the idea of a smartphones and touchscreens and head to the next level of design and interactivity. Looking for a new Zelda game for your Wii U? Nintendo hasn't quite spilled the beans on that one, but it has given us some additional details about the system's upcoming Gamecube remake: The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker HD will hit stores this October. Naturally, Nintendo boasted that the game would be rendered in 1080p, justifying the "HD" part of the game's title, but the company saw fit to patch some of the original game's non-visual shortcomings, too -- lightly teasing itself for the Gamecube release's long and dull sailing segments. The fix, apparently, was numbingly simple: hold the A button to sail faster. Developing Filed under: Gaming,

As Apple explained during its keynote yesterday, devices with Activation Lock enabled will preclude a thief from turning off the "Find my iPhone" feature without fist entering in the device owner's Apple ID and password. The creators of Bastion will be making Sony's console their home early next year and it's bound to be one of the highlights of this year's E3. Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 coming to PS4

When Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura made a cameo at Sony's E3 press conference, we expected to hear an update on Final Fantasy Versus XIII -- we were wrong, but not disappointed. Instead of the heavily anticipated spinoff, Nomura revealed Final Fantasy XV to the world, promising the title for the PlayStation 4. It was hard to tell from the action packed trailer, but XV seems to to be a departure from the series' traditional turn-based combat, looking more to us like an action title than an RPG. And to showcase the console's graphical sophistication, Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshia played a 12-minute tech demo of Quantic Dream's upcoming PS4 title, The Dark Sorcerer. The majority of the demo focused closely on the sorcerer in question's face, giving an early glimpse of the nuance of hyper realistic expression capable in characters' eyes and faces.
