NYT: Phone vendors profiting off turning blind eye to thefts
The cellphone industry -- including both carriers and phone makers -- is turning a blind eye toward the problem of smartphone theft, to its own benefit, a New York Times piece claims. The paper for instance quotes Cathy Lanier, the chief of police for the District of Columbia. "The carriers are not innocent in this whole game. They are making profit off this," she argues. In 2012, the DC area witnessed a record 1,829 phones being stolen.

360intersect inspires techies without getting technical
This past weekend in Seattle a small group of tech folks gathered to talk about the work they do while away from the computer. Unlike a lot of tech conferences, there were no discussions of APIs or frameworks, no in-depth analysis of App Store sales figures or phoney-baloney social marketing doublespeak. 360|intersect was about the people, their passions, and getting inspired to do great things.

News: Google denies Google Now for iOS drains battery
With users of Google Now for iOS — found within the Google Search app — complaining about excessive battery drain, a recently published post on Lifehacker suggested turning off location reporting in settings for a fix. Apple posts 50 billion app countdown
The race to 50 billion is on.
Just about a week after Apple announced that the App Store had crossed 45 billion downloads, Apple has decided it's high time to launch an official countdown towards the 50 billionth downloaded app.
The lucky winner will receive a $10,000 gift card redeemable on the App Store. Apple has run similar app download countdowns in the past, but this year it has decided to share the wealth a bit more. In addition to the aforementioned grand prize winner, Apple will be doling out $500 App Store gift cards to customers who download the next 50 apps once the 50 billion mark has been reached.

Apple Begins Countdown to 50 Billion App Store Downloads
Apple has posted a new contest on the App Store [Direct Link], offering a $10,000 gift card to whomever downloads the fifty billionth app from the App Store, similar to previous promotions. Apple said during its most recent earnings call that the company has surpassed 45 billion app downloads. Apple's most recent contest was for 25 billion downloads back in February 2012. Gradients is a free iOS photo editor that is worth a look
I'm always on the lookout for free photo apps that do a good job, and Gradients for iPhone (free, universal) fits the bill. The app lets you add gradients to existing photos with almost infinite variations and control. I often create gradients in Photoshop, especially to tone down the sky in landscapes. It's nice to have a lightweight utility to handle that simple task.
There are 46 filter styles available, and each one is customizable in parameters like opacity and tilt. You can turn photos into black and white images. Haven't heard of Noah Falstein? That may be the case, but you've probably heard of some of his work -- everything from arcade gem Sinistar to adventure game classic Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Well now he's working on another thing you've heard of: Google. Penultimate update adds smarter notebook titles and improved Evernote sync
Penultimate (free), the iOS handwritten note-taking app that was snapped up by Evernote just about a year ago, was updated to version 4.1 today.
What's different? If you connect the app to Evernote, it will now suggest notebook titles based on your location and events that you have on your calendar. The Evernote blog shows an example of a "design meetup" notebook that was created based on a calendar event. You can still change the suggested notebook titles by tapping and typing. iOS 6.1.4 update appears for iPhone 5
A somewhat unexpected iOS update showed up this afternoon for iPhone 5 owners. iOS 6.1.4 is a small update at 11.5 MB and the release note shows that it provides an updated audio profile for speakerphone.
The build number is 10B350 for those who keep track of such things. No developer beta of this update was released prior to today.

Instagram Launches 'Photos of You' Feature, Lets Users Tag People [iOS Blog]
Instagram today updated its iOS app to version 3.5, adding a feature called “Photos of You.” The new functionality allows Instagram users to tag people in photos and introduces an additional Photos of You profile section where tagged photos are aggregated. The tagging works similarly to Facebook tagging, but it is limited to the original photo taker, disallowing for third party tag suggestions. The new profile section will not be publicly visible until May 16, allowing users time to approve tagged photos and to adjust privacy settings. Facebook introduces 'Trusted Contacts' for extra account security
Facebook has announced plans to roll out a new security feature for accounts, dubbed Trusted Contacts. Under the scheme, an account owner will be able to pick three to five people to whom they can give special PINs. Should the owner have trouble getting into their account, three PIN holders will be able to help them log back in. It's not clear how quickly Trusted Contacts will become available to Facebook users.

iPad commands lion's share of tablet market despite Samsung's gains
The latest Q1 2013 research data from IDC shows that the market for tablets is absolutely booming, growing 142.4% year over year. To put that into context, IDC notes that the 49.2 million tablets shipped during the first three months of 2013 is greater than the number of tablets shipped during the first six months of 2012.
As one might expect, Apple's iPad continues to lead the tablet charge, ranking first in both marketshare and in overall unit sales. Specifically, Apple's iPad sales increased 65.3% year over year, climbing from 11.8 million units during Q1 2012 to 19.5 million units during Q1 2013.
Apple's marketshare, however, went down from 58.1% to 39.6% on account of impressive sales growth from competing manufacturers.

Android-Nutzung in Zahlen: Jelly Bean holt auf, Gingerbread bleibt Platzhirsch

Google hat neue Zahlen zu den Nutzerverhältnissen des mobilen Betriebssystem Android veröffentlicht. Demnach ist Gingerbread ab Version 2.3 bis 2.3.2 mit 38,4 Prozent noch immer das am meisten verbreitete Android. Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.3-4.0.4) läuft auf 27,5 Prozent aller Android-Geräte. iOS 6 devices get DoD approval for US government use
The US Department of Defense will soon approve the iPhone and iPad for use by military agencies for non-classified communications, reports The Wall Street Journal. The approval will only be for devices running iOS 6 or higher. According to the WSJ:

Twitter for iOS updated with location-based trends, more
Twitter has released an update to its iOS app that adds new features and several improvements. The biggest new feature is the ability to view global trends. Previously a user could view local trends in the Discover tab, but now you can select global trend locations and view trending hashtags from locales across the world.
Twitter for iOS now also lets you invite friends to join Twitter from within the app. Previously this feature was only found on its web-based client. Also, retweets have been tweaked to include both the original author's Twitter handle and the handle of the person retweeting it. Finally, Twitter has improved the playback of Vine videos within the app.

Apple has added new storage options to its iMac lineup, allowing users to choose either a 256 GB or 512 GB flash storage drive as part of the order customization process. The new options are available as $300 and $600 surcharges respectively to replace the 1 TB traditional hard drive that is standard across all iMac models. Previously, the 21.5-inch iMac had not been available with dedicated flash storage options, only offering the standard 1 TB traditional hard drive and a $250 Fusion Drive option. IDC release tablet 'shipment share,' claims Android topping Apple
Research firm IDC has posted the results of a questionable study on tablet "market share" that makes the claim -- not supported by sales evidence -- that Android has outgunned Apple in the tablet market, with 56.5 percent share in the first calendar quarter of the year, leaving Apple with barely 40 percent. The study also claims that Asus, not Amazon, is the third-largest tablet vendor with 5.5 percent of the market, having seen 350 percent growth year-over-year. The numbers seem unbelievable -- until one notices that IDC is estimating shipments, not sales.

Report: forthcoming iOS 7 'will ship on time' despite alleged crunch

Daily iPhone App: House of the Dead Overkill - The Lost Reels is gross but innovative
There are some really excellent apps arriving on the App Store tonight (including Firaxis' great Haunted Hollow), but before we tackle that new crop, I did want to mention this app, released last week by Sega. House of the Dead, if you're not aware, is an arcade shooting game, where you take on a whole haunted house full of zombies and demons with a light gun (and usually a friend, if you're playing in an arcade with quarters). Sharp seeking 100 bilion yen bailout loan for debt maturity payouts
A pair of Japanese banks are considering a 100 billion yen bailout loan to Sharp, to help it meet an upcoming bond redemption. The electronics manufacturer has nearly 200 billion yen in convertible bonds, similar to Apple's current offering, maturing in September. Lenders Mizuho Corporate Bank and Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ are also giving Sharp an extension on 360 billion yen in lending that matures in June. The offerings by the banks puts Sharp in the red to the two banks to just over 800 billion yen.

McDonald's releases McPlay app: 'Hey kids, this is advertising'
McDonald's has awkwardly tried to enter the App Store marketplace with an app it calls "McPlay," available for free on the App Store right now. I wouldn't recommend a download (personally, I've boycotted the golden arches for almost a decade now), but it is fascinating to see the fast-food giant not quite understand how to do iOS-style marketing. The app is just one game at the moment, asking players to throw a ball into a Happy Meal box. And McDonald's is obviously being as careful as it possibly can with this one. Not only is the app all about gathering nutritious food for kids, but there's a "for parents" nutrition section, and as you can see in the screenshot above, the app proudly proclaims, "Hey kids, this is advertising!"

Tipping Point Adventure for iPad is clever and engaging
My experience as an adventure game player goes way back to the text-only Colossal Cave game, which then morphed into the classic Zork text games from Infocom (which, by the way, you can play even now on iOS with the Lost Treasures of Infocom app).
Now, with speed and graphic power, games are a lot more immersive and fun to play. Tipping Point Adventure, is a recent iPad-only release that is rich in puzzles and high quality graphics. The game is currently on sale for U.S. $1.99 in the app store. Y

Chef Sleeve's Smart Food Scale sends nutritional info to your iOS device
Seeing as how Chef Sleeve is best know for its combo cutting board / iPad stand, the company's latest product isn't a huge leap. Sadly, the it didn't actually have a prototype of its Smart Food Scale at its booth here at TechCrunch Disrupt, but we did get a chance to chat a bit about the product, which just had its Kickstarter page open up. T-Mobile: MetroPCS customers won't get iPhone option just yet
The now-official merger of T-Mobile and MetroPCS into T-Mobile US will not immediately change options for no-contract MetroPCS customers in the way of being able to upgrade to an iPhone under their present arrangements, CEO John Legere said in an interview. While not closing the door on either changes to MetroPCS policies or a no-contract iPhone option in the future, Legere said that MetroPCS' nine million customers will not see iPhones offered anytime soon. 22Cans speeds up the Curiosity cube
Peter Molyneux's 22Cans studio put out Curiosity on iOS last year, as a sort of a social game-slash-experiment. The idea was that hundreds of thousands of people would be able to download the app, and then use it chip away (by tapping) on a virtual cube, unearthing layer after layer of virtual cubes, with only one person getting the chance to eventually tap on the center. Originally, the project was scheduled to end sometime next year, but that's become too long for 22Cans: The company has decided to update the app down to the last 50 layers.
