Apple's data centers now powered by 100% renewable energy
Apple released the 2012 update of its environmental policy pages and notes that the company is now using 100 percent renewable energy sources -- solar, wind, hydro and geothermal -- at its data centers.
The 100 percent renewable energy figure was also achieved at facilities in Austin, TX, Elk Grove, CA, Cork, Ireland and Munich, Germany, as well as at the Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino, CA. For all of Apple's corporate facilities worldwide, the figure is at 75 percent, and the company says that they "won't stop working until we achieve 100 percent throughout Apple."

HBO CEO casually mentions standalone HBO Go option for broadband subscribers, but it's not à la carte
HBO's president and COO Erik Kessler stated just last month that having à la carte access to HBO isn't going to happen in the near future, but it seems that the channel's CEO has been mulling a compromise. Firefox Nightly now packing OdinMonkey JavaScript optimization
Today, Firefox's Nightly channel received a pick me up in the form of its asm.js optimizer known as OdinMonkey. Baked into June's stable release of Firefox 22, this subset of Mozilla's rendering engine lets developers compile C or C++ to JavaScript by using Emscripten. This gives the code the potential to run within 2x its native performance. For those of you who've now gone cross-eyed, simply put this should give Firefox a hefty performance boost and open the door to more sophisticated browser-based games as well as faster web apps. Apple Podcasts app for iOS updated to version 1.2
Thursday afternoon, Apple updated its iOS Podcasts application again. The v1.2 update addresses "additional stability and performance improvements," over the previous versions and adds a couple of new features. The Now Playing view has been redesigned with easier to use playback controls, playlists synced from iTunes now appears in the Podcasts app, and iCloud integration has been improved.

Study: Higher resolution smartphone screens mean more in-app purchases
The results of the study discussed in this post seem obvious when you think about it, but at least there's some empirical data to back it the findings. A study conducted by Pocket Gems suggests that people whose smartphones (including iPhones) have high-resolution screens are more likely to buy in-app purchases from game apps, according to AllThingsD.

Microsoft demos improvements to Bing voice recognition for Windows Phone

Apple updates Podcasts app to version 1.2
Apple's homegrown Podcasts app (free) received an update today to version 1.2, with a few new features as well as some of the famous "additional performance and stability improvements" the company is known for.
Per the release notes, Podcasts 1.2 allows users to create custom stations of their favorite podcasts that update automatically with new episodes and choose whether the stations begin playing with the newest or oldest unplayed episode. Those stations are stored in iCloud, so they're synced across all devices.
Listeners can create On-The-Go playlists on their iOS devices with their own list of episodes, and the Now Playing view has been redesigned with playback controls that Apple says are easier to use.

Apple enables two-step verification option for Apple IDs
A two-step verification process is now an option for Apple ID accounts, reports say. The option can be accessed on Apple's website, and once enabled requires entering a PIN before making an account change or a purchase on iTunes or the App Store. Codes are sent via Find My iPhone or a text message.

Bubble Browser for Evernote shows tags as bubbles
Bubble Browser, now available on the Mac App Store, is a new tool to assist in visualizing Evernote data. In particular, it excels at showing you tagged info, and presents larger bubbles corresponding to the frequency of use for a given tag. It's fast and easy to use, and I had a lot of fun poking around my "other brain" to see what I had been storing and what I hadn't tagged.

There's been few Apple iOS apps that have garnered more complaints than the company's Podcasts app (outside of Maps, at least), and it looks like it's now finally taken some of those criticisms into consideration with the latest update. Jony Ive Pushing for 'Flat Design' in iOS 7 Amid Greater Hardware-Software Design Collaboration
Last October, Tim Cook tasked Jony Ive with leadership of the company's Human Interface teams in addition to his role as head of Industrial Design. LG E980 arrives in the FCC's database with LTE: is this the Optimus G Pro for AT&T?

Report; next iPhone parts headed to Apple in May
Allegedly, components for the next iPhone will commence shipping at the end of May, with a possibility of a new device seeing release some time in the third quarter. Apple says Google Now never submitted to App Store
A Google Now app has yet to be submitted to the App Store, Apple says in a new statement. At this week's Big Tent Summit, Google chairman Eric Schmidt hinted that an app might just be waiting for approval. "You'll need to discuss that with Apple," he remarked. "Apple has a policy of approving or disapproving apps that are submitted into its store, and some of the apps we make they approve, and some of them they don't."

Apple on the verge of rolling out two-step verification for iCloud, Apple ID
According to a report on 9to5 Mac, Apple has begun training support personnel in advance of rolling out two-step authentication for iCloud and Apple ID. This is a significant step towards enhanced security for Apple accounts as it requires both a trusted device and an extra security code in addition to a password. Apple says it now gets 75 percent of its total energy from renewable sources

Apple Increases Account Security With Optional Two-Step Verification System for Apple IDs
Apple has implemented a new two-step verification system for Apple IDs (via 9to5Mac), adding an additional layer of protection for Apple accounts with an extra security code and a "trusted" device. Two-step verification will require you to verify your identity using one of your devices before you can make changes to your account or make an iTunes or App Store purchase from a new device. You will also get a Recovery Key for safekeeping which you can use to access your account if you ever forget your password or lose your device.Once enabled, the new system replaces the standard security questions that are asked before users make purchases on a new device and password resets can only be done from the designated iPhone or iPad.

Apple datacenters now fully powered by renewable energy
Apple's datacenters are now fully supplied by renewable energy, the company has announced on its website. The company is relying mostly on a mix of solar, wind, and geothermal energy. At a facility in Maiden, North Carolina, it is also relying on fuel cells that convert biogas; the main source of energy though is a 100-acre solar farm, which became fully operational in December. The company says it has met a goal of producing 60 percent of the center's energy on-site.

Apple brings two-step verification to iCloud and Apple ID users
It's been a strong selling point from Google for security-minded users, and now Apple has finally come on board with a two-step verification process for Apple ID and iCloud users. Nintendo European eShop restriction lifted, get your 18+ games at any hour
Nintendo's European arm worked out a deal with Germany's video game regulation body, USK, and its 18+ eShop games are now available at any hour on the 3DS and Wii U. In a missive issued to European Nintendo console users, the company said "adults can browse and buy all games at any time of day" from now on. AOL travel website Gadling takes a look at the American Airlines iPad Electronic Flight Bag that received initial FAA approval more than a year ago. iCloud, Dropbox, Amazon top US cloud services
According to a study recently published by Strategy Analytics, Apple's iCloud and iTunes Match are tops among US consumer cloud services.
The study polled 2,300 Americans and found, among other things, that 27 percent of respondents have used iCloud and/or iTunes Match. Further, 17 percent have used Dropbox and 15 percent of participants have used Amazon Cloud Drive.

OS X 10.8.3 fixes Pixelmator 'restarting' bug
In December we reported that a bug in OS X 10.8.2 would sometimes cause a user's machine to restart automatically when the user was intensively using Pixelmator. Pixelmator took the brunt of the blame for the bug, but actually the issue was caused by NVIDIA GeForce graphics card drivers and not by Pixelmator's code. The company was stuck with the bug until Apple got around to fixing it.

Blackberry OS: Sicherheitstest dauern noch an
BlackBerrys neues OS 10 werde den Sicherheitsanforderungen der britischen Regierung nicht gerecht, schrieb der Guardian gestern. Den Bericht hat Hersteller RIM inzwischen dementiert. New 'Yontoo' Adware Trojan Targets Major Browsers on OS X
Russian security firm Doctor Web this week highlighted a new trojan (via The Next Web) affecting OS X systems and which installs an adware plug-in capable of injecting ads into users' browsing experience. As with other trojans, this new Yontoo malware relies on tricking users into installing the package, which in this case masquerades as a movie trailer video plug-in, download accelerator, or other software a user might believe they want or need on their system.When launched, Trojan.Yontoo.1 displays a dialogue window that asks the user if they want to install Free Twit Tube. New adware trojan targets OS X users
Adware attacks against OS X are on the rise this year, says a report by anti-virus company Doctor Web. The Russian firm recently discovered another threat, Trojan.Yontoo.1, which has quickly become the most prominent adware trojan attacking Apple desktops and laptops.
The trojan worms its way onto your computer through websites that require you to install a plugin to view the content of the site. The most common vector are movie trailer websites that prompt you to install an HD Video player or similar plugin. Instead of a media plugin, unsuspecting users will download the trojan.

Tablet-Computer für Luzerner Schulen
Wie die Pendlerzeitung 20 Minuten berichtet, sollen vier Luzerner Schulen bald mit Tablet-Computern ausgerüstet werden. Im Sommer wird das Projekt testweise in 24 Schulklassen gestartet. Was für Tablets genau zum Einsatz kommen ist noch nicht geklärt. Die Kosten von «rund 500 Franken pro Tablet» sollen sich Kanton und Gemeinden teilen. Da noch nicht alle Eltern informiert wurden, konnten die Verantwortlichen auch noch nicht bekanntgeben, welche Schulen am Pilotprojekt teilnehmen werden. Der «Willisauer Bote» schreibt, dass die vier Schulen in Dagmersellen und Menznau seien. Verläuft das Projekt erfolgreich, ist es möglich das bald alle Schulen des Kantons mit Tablet-Computern ausgerüstet werden.
Die Geräte sollen etwa für Übungen oder die Suche nach Informationen genutzt werden.

An Apple fan, Mohamed Kerroudj has posted a couple of concept videos on where Apple could take its UI in iOS 7. Looking reminiscent of the flat Windows Phone design language combined with elements of Google Now and the new popular new Mailbox app for iOS, Kerroudj's approach has a minimalist style. Kerroudj's version of iOS 7 would have a much more functional lock-screen, while also removing the skeumorphism apparent in native iOS apps like Calendar.

Apple lässt sich «iAd» schützen
Das US-Patentamt hat Apple am Dienstag die Markenrechte am Symbol von «iAd» zugesprochen. Damit erhält das Symbol fast zwei Jahre nach der ersten Verwendung den rechtlichen Schutz vor der Konkurrenz. Apple aktualisiert GarageBand für iOS
Apple hat am Mittwoch GarageBand für iOS auf Version 1.4 aktualisiert. Als grösste Neuerung nennt Apple die Unterstützung für Audiobus. Mit «Audiobus» können Audio-Ausgaben verschiedenster Musik-Apps gemischt werden. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Apps, welche Audiobus unterstützen, kann mit GarageBand lediglich ein Audiosignal empfangen, nicht aber gesendet werden.
Neben der Neuerung mit Audiobus hat Apple auch diverse kleinere Veränderungen an der Musik-App vorgenommen. Gemäss der Beschreibung der App kommt es zu keinen Rückkopplungen mehr, wenn man Zubehör von Drittanbietern anschliesst. Zudem kann das magnetische Raster zur Bearbeitung von Regionen und Noten deaktiviert werden.

Two of the industry's heaviest hitters on Wednesday filed amicus curae ("friend of the court") briefs with the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) in support of Apple's position in its appeal over the dismissal last year of a two-way lawsuit with Motorola over patents and FRAND licensing. Samsung's Android phones affected by another lockscreen bypass, fix is in the works
Since lockscreen bypass methods are apparently what's hot in the streets, it's no surprise that yet another one has surfaced, this time targeting Samsung's Android phones. A variant of another, earlier uncovered method, this one does not fully unlock the phone by itself, but does provide access to apps and settings for a brief period. Given that, as demonstrated in the video by Terrence Eden, it's possible to use Google Play to download an app to disable the locked screen and fully access the phone. NYC MTA to install 90 futuristic touchscreen kiosks across the subway

Logitech shows gaming focus, unveils eight new products
While input device manufacturer Logitech has made gaming-focused accessories for some time, the company is now formalizing the G-series of gamer input devices. Department of Defense Ordering 650,000 iOS Devices?
The United States Department of Defense is reportedly ordering more than 650,000 iOS devices according to Electronista, which cites unnamed sources. The report says the DoD will purchase 120,000 iPads, 120,000 iPad minis, 200,000 iPod touches and 210,000 iPhones.
