Apple updates iOS GarageBand to 1.4, adds Audiobus support
Earlier today, Apple released an update for the iOS version of GarageBand, incrementing the app to revision 1.4. The new update contains bug fixes for one of Apple's most popular apps. In addition to the fixes, the app update brings support for Audiobus, a third-party app that can record audio from other apps that support the application as well.

GarageBand for iOS updated, adds AudioBus support
Apple has pushed out an update for GarageBand for iOS. The version 1.4 update brings a number of enhancements to GarageBand for iOS, most notably support for playing and recording audio routed through the third-party app AudioBus.
AudioBus is an iOS app that allows users to route various music apps through it. The makers of AudioBus liken it to a "virtual cable" that connects separate audio apps together.
The full list of enhancements to GarageBand in this update include:

Pixelmator Crashing Issue Fixed in OS X 10.8.3 [Mac Blog]
Back in December, the team behind Pixelmator posted a lengthy apology on their blog after a bug in OS X 10.8.2 would sometimes cause Macs to restart or the app to crash when intensively using the popular image editor. It appears that the issue has now been resolved with the release of OS X 10.8.3 last week. Shine for Mac OS adds very realistic lighting effects to your images
Shine (US$9.99 in the Mac App Store) is not the first app we've seen that allows you to add realistic lighting effects to your images, but it is very capable and easy to use.
To start, drag and drop an image into the Shine palette, and place a light source. Drag it and rotate it where you want, then adjust size, intensity, and color, and you'll have an enhanced image. The app includes undo, and auto saving and restoring.
The lighting effects are realistic and natural looking. The danger is that, like any app that modifies an image, you can get carried away. I prefer a subtle hand. My favorite place for photography is Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona. It's a slot canyon, and you have to be there at just the r

Google Play Books now available in Mexico
Despite going on quite the world tour, Google Play Books hasn't been available as close by as Mexico. That's been rectified: the online bookstore is now open in the country, with both local titles and prices in Pesos. Report claims 'iPhone 5S' special event set for June 29
An unnamed "inside source" at Apple (and "confirmed" by an also-unnamed "third party") has alleged that Apple will introduce its next model of iPhone and iPad at a special event on June 29 in celebration of the sixth anniversary of the original iPhone. The dubious report claims the event will be called "Original Passion, New Ideas" to highlight that the "iPhone 5S" and "iPad 5" will be the first new products from Apple with no input from the company's previous CEO and co-founder, Steve Jobs.

New lockscreen bypass discovered in iOS 6.1.3
A new lockscreen bypass has been discovered in iOS 6.1.3, notes iPhoneinCanada. Unlike the tricks discovered in iOS 6.1, the new one appears to affect only the iPhone 4. It also, unusually, involves popping out an iPhone's SIM card while using Voice Control to dial an emergency number.

Exclusive: US DoD to purchase 650,000 iOS devices
Electronista has discovered that the mobile device testing program currently underway at the Department of Defense has produced a pending purchase order for Apple hardware. Following completion of the first phases of the project, as well as a few other initiatives coming to fruition, the Department of Defense will be ordering just over 650,000 iOS devices from the Cupertino manufacturer following conclusion of the sequester.

Still haven't found the sound you're looking for in Apple's iOS GarageBand offering? The newly released version 1.4 broadens the music app's horizons, thanks to Audiobus compatibility, letting it work alongside titles like Animoog, ThumbJam, Samplr and pretty much all of Korg's iPhone offerings. SolForge preview gets an update, with new decks to play

Google Currents for Android now supports audio playback, improves syncing between devices

BioShock Infinite to be Released for Mac This Summer [Mac Blog]

China Telecom reports big lift from iPhone sales
China's third-largest cellular carrier, China Telecom, reported higher-than-expected fourth-quarter profits on the strength of attracting new subscribers and a lift gained from iPhone sales, which increased average revenue per customer due to better sales of wireless voice and data. Though net income was down from the same quarter a year ago, it beat analyst's estimates, and the company added some eight million users in the last quarter -- boosting its total base to 160.6 million subscribers.

Sony/Philips-funded Intertrust sues Apple over 15 patents
Research and development firm Intertrust has filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming violation of 15 patents connected to "security and distributed trusted computing," according to an announcement. The company doesn't go into specific detail about the patents, but identifies numerous Apple products as infringing, including Macs, the iPhone, the iPad, and the Apple TV, along with services such as iTunes, iCloud, and the App Store.

Review: RHA's SA950i headphones with remote and mic
Simply put, I'm not a fan of headphones. For me, they are bulky, unsightly and, more often than not, uncomfortable.
Sonically, I've found in-ear earphones provide a much better reproduction of sound, too. You don't need to have the volume as loud and they isolate external noise much more efficiently, too.

Google search adds sports info, gets a bad case of March Madness
Google's big push toward richer search just got a bit more sporty. The site announced that it's adding sports schedules, stats and other contextual information to its results. Interested parties can now find game scores, full league standings, schedules grouped by day and week and can drill down for more info on players in individual games. Halfbrick Studios has posted a quick teaser for a brand new game on its website, but here's all we know. It's got something to do with fishing. SpaceX's Merlin 1D engine gets flight qualified, Musk expects launch this year

DRM Software Development Company Intertrust Files Lawsuit Against Apple for Patent Infringement
The Wall Street Journal reports that patent holding company Intertrust Technologies Corp. has filed suit against Apple, accusing the Cupertino-based company of infringing on 15 of Intertrust's patents related to "security and distributed trusted computing." Intertrust invents and licenses technologies for digital rights management, currently holding more than 150 patents. Pebble updates smartwatch firmware to version 1.9, improved interface and Snake game in tow

JetBlue names in-flight WiFi service: Fly-Fi, powered by ViaSat Exede
During today's analyst event, JetBlue shared some more details about its upcoming in-flight WiFi product. Walmart extends iPhone scan-and-checkout feature
Walmart is expanding its Scan & Go checkout feature to over 200 stores, up from the current 70, according to Reuters. Scan & Go allows Walmart shoppers to scan items in the store with the Walmart iPhone app and then pay for them at self-checkout terminals.

Walmart to grow Scan & Go iPhone checkout to 200+ stores
Walmart will expand its Scan & Go iPhone checkout system to over 200 stores by the end of the coming year, says Reuters. The program started near Walmart's home office in Bentonville, Arkansas, and is currently in about 70 stores so far. China Central Television recently singled out Apple for its shoddy products and poor customer service in a three-hour documentary. According to M.I.C. Gadget, a gaffe by a celebrity may have exposed this film as nothing but propaganda.

iPhone boost helps China Telecom profit beats estimates
It's a pattern that has been repeated over and over; a wireless carrier adds the iPhone to its mix of products and profitability improves. The latest beneficiary of this little bit of Apple magic is China Telecom, which began selling subsidized iPhones last year. The company reported that net income for the quarter fell 17 percent to 2.36 billion yuan (or about US$380 million) from the previous year, but that figure exceeded the 2.04 billion yuan analysts were predicting.

More than a few of us were surprised when Facebook tried pushing Android app updates outside of Google Play. Was it switching app distribution models? Not quite. Judge Paul S. Grewal has strong words for Apple's legal team
When you're in the midst of a series of court battles around the world, it seems like the last thing that you want to be doing is angering judges. Unfortunately for Apple, that's just what they seem to have done, as U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul S. Adobe claims over 500K paid Creative Cloud subscriptions
Adobe has cracked over 500,000 paid, individual subscribers to its Creative Cloud service, the company announced on Tuesday as a part of its quarterly results. Schriefer only had a few minutes to chat, but he demoed a customizable iPhone case that was stunningly simple in design and execution. The frām case (US $34.95) makes personalizing your iPhone case with just about any photo or artwork a quick 90-second process.
The frām case, which is currently only available for iPhone 4/4S, uses a clear polycarbonate back to protect an image or photo that is cut to the shape of that back. In fact, the back is easily popped out of the case and becomes a template to mark a photo for trimming and placing into the case.

AT&T to offer increased data plans for business
AT&T has announced that it's rolling out new large data plans meant for businesses. Starting on March 22, businesses will be able to sign up to data plans covering either 30, 40, or even 50 GB of data per month, which can be shared across a number of phones on one plan. There is a standard charge per month for each tier, and then AT&T charges per phone on the rest of the plan. If you'd like, the business can even sign up other tablets or devices like laptops to the plan, allowing one plan to cover all of the devices your company uses.

Nichts für 007: BB10 verpasst Sicherheitseinstufung in UK

BlackBerrys BB10 hat laut dem Guardian den Sicherheitstest nicht bestanden, den die britische Communications Electronics Security Group für den Einsatz bei Behörden vorschreibt. US-Gericht droht Apple mit Strafzahlung
US-Richter Paul Grewal wirft Apple in einem aktuellen Prozess ein “inakzeptables Verhalten” vor. Der Konzern aus Cupertino hatte geforderte Dokumente nicht eingereicht. Apple wird in dem Fall beschuldigt, Ortsdaten von iPhone-Nutzern zu sammeln und weiterzugeben. Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch wechselt zu Apple
Adobe hat in der Nacht auf heute in einem Schreiben an die amerikanische Börsenaufsicht den Abgang von seinem Technologie-Chef Kevin Lynch bekanntgegeben. Kevin Lynch verlässt Adobe auf den 22. März. Als Grund für den Abgang gab Adobe an, dass sich der CTO künftig anderen Herausforderungen widmen möchte. Gemäss CNBC ist es Apple gelungen, den hochrangigen Manager von Adobe abzuwerben. Bei Apple soll er die Position des «Vice President of Technology» übernehmen, womit er direkt Bob Mansfield (SVP of Technology) untersteht.
Nun wird spekuliert, wieso Apple gerade Kevin Lynch für diesen Posten engagierte. Möglicherweise ist das Interesse von Apple darin begründet, dass Lynch tiefe Einblicke in Adobes Flash hatte. Lynch hatte gestern seine Kündigung bei Adobe mit der Begründung eingereicht, andere Möglichkeiten verfolgen zu wollen, wobei zunächst nicht ganz klar, welche das sein sollten. Apple veröffentlicht Apple TV Update auf 5.2.1
Neben iOS 6.1.3 hat Apple gestern Abend auch ein Update für die Fernseh-Settop-Box «Apple TV» veröffentlicht. Das Update auf die Version 5.2.1 bringt Fehlerbehebungen, Stabilitäts- und Performance-Verbesserungen sowie ein runderneuertes Hulu-App.
Das Update behebt eine Sicherheitslücke, mit welcher unsignierter Code auf Kernel-Ebene ausgeführt werden konnte. Weitere Verbesserungen gab es für die Software-Update-Prozedur, Untertitel und die generelle Performance. Ausserdem ist «iTunes in the Cloud» für Musik nun auch für Apple-TV-Benutzer in Japan und Israel verfügbar. Der in den USA über Apple TV verfügbare «Video-on-Demand»-Service Hulu bekommt mit dem Update eine neue Benutzeroberfläche.

Excel Software, makers of various utilities that help developers package, license and protect their software projects, have updated both DocProtect and AppProtect to version 3.0. Canonical cuts support for non-LTS versions of Ubuntu, users now get nine months of bug fixes
Until now, people who downloaded non-LTS (long-term support) versions of Ubuntu were treated to a lengthy support period -- a full 18 months. Now, though, Ubuntu's technical board is shortening that support window to nine months, in the hopes that Canonical can assign its engineers to other projects. (If you look at the board's meeting notes at the link below, the group also agrees that most bugs get fixed within nine months anyway.) If you're wondering how this might affect you, the new policy applies to version 13.04, along with all future non-LTS releases. Analyst: Apple likely to gain US share on Samsung this year
After watching the sometimes-awkward public debut of Samsung's Galaxy S4 smartphone, research analysts Yankee Group are predicting that while the model will do well in the US, it won't stop the slow gains in Apple's North American marketshare. Apple credits Evad3rs team for holes plugged in iOS 6.1.3
In closing six potential exploits in the security-oriented iOS 6.1.3 update released earlier today -- and simultaneously breaking compatibility with the evasi0n jailbreak -- Apple has acknowledged the contributions of the Evad3rs team behind the jailbreak with finding four of the six flaws that, in the wrong hands, could have lead to an increased risk of malware rather than just a path to unofficial apps and customizing. In a surprise move, the Chief Technology Officer at Adobe has left the company effective Friday to become a Vice President of Technology at Apple. Kevin Lynch -- who once famously defended mobile Flash against Apple's exclusion of the technology in its iOS devices -- will report to Senior Vice President of Technologies Bob Mansfield, who may be intending to groom Lynch as a possible successor. Gone in a flash: Adobe Chief Technology Officer joining Apple

NimbleBit's Nimble Quest coming to iOS and Mac March 28
NimbleBit has announced that its latest game, Nimble Quest, is due March 28, right in the middle of next week's Game Developers' Conference in San Francisco. I've been playing the game for a few weeks, and it's great. It's definitely more arcade-y than NimbleBit's other games (including Pocket Planes and Tiny Tower), but it's a lot of fun, and there's no shortage of heroes to unlock and high scores to earn as you play through the Snake-based RPG dungeons.
The game is coming to iOS and to the Mac next week, which I believe is a first for NimbleBit. The team has released its games on both platforms before, but not at the same time. This is probably a re

eMusic CEO steps down as site merges with e-book distributor
It's only March, but 2013's already proving to be quite the wild ride for music distribution trailblazer, eMusic. A month after eschewing its long time subscription-only model by adding direct music purchases, the site has merged with Ray Kurzweil-founded e-book distributor, K-NFB Reading Inc. The companies confirmed the move in a statement sent to record label partners, which highlights their plan to, "create a consumer-centric interface that makes discovering, interacting with, and purchasing all kinds of media content more accessible and seamless for consumers."
