Sprint almost bought MetroPCS for $8 billion, Hesse said yes, but the board said no
Well, well, it looks like AT&T wasn't the only one looking to acquire a competitor in the wireless business last year. According to CNBC's David Faber, the Now Network was knee-deep in negotiations to acquire MetroPCS for $8 billion dollars before its board nixed the deal. Apparently, Sprint had been trying to make the merger happen for months and the coupling was even endorsed by CEO Dan Hesse, but for reasons unknown the board shot it down. We're still digging for details, so stay tuned for more as we have it.

Apple starts selling Brazilian-made iPhone 4s
Apple has begun selling Brazilian-made 8GB iPhone 4s in that country, reports say. Previously all iPhone 4 models were made in China, but units are now rolling off of Foxconn's Brazilian assembly lines. The switchover is actually believed to have happened several weeks ago, but gone largely unnoticed. At Apple's regional online store, the Brazilian-made black and white models are listed as MD128BR/A and MD198BR/A, respectively. Earlier Chinese-made equivalents for the area bore MD128BZ/A and MD198BZ/A identifiers.

Today at Apple's online store refurbished Mac mini models start as low as $519 for a Mac mini originally released in July of 2011 with a 2.3GHz Intel dual-core i5 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. Report: Apple's iOS accounts for 35% of mobile ad impressions
Apple's share of the overall mobile market seems to be heading dramatically upward, at least according to inMobi. The company measures how ads they serve (almost 100 million ads deployed each month) are filtered onto mobile devices. The figures are striking. Apple's share of ad impressions went from 23.2% in October of 2011 to 35% in January of 2012. At the same time, Android devices declined 3.2%. That's a reversal from a year ago when Android was topping the list. Android has also slipped 8.9% to an 11.6% share. The company also measures the top 3 handsets and they are all Apple products. The Apple iPhone 4, the first generation iPad, and the iPod touch are the devices that view the most advertising.

HP server may have slipped simpler Windows 8 lineup
HP may have inadvertently spoiled Microsoft's plans for a simpler Windows 8 lineup after it posted a document for OS support with the future OS inside. The sheet lists just a basic Windows 8 as well as Professional and Enterprise editions. Apart from the necessary 32- and 64-bit splits, no mention was made of Home Basic, Home Premium, Starter, or other separate home versions that previous Windows versions have had in the past.

It's rare to come up with a Friday Favorite for something as seemingly ho-hum as a USB hub, but this particular model caught my eye a while ago when a colleague brought it with him on a project. Google-Hardware: Tablet im Gespräch neben Musik-Hardware

Heute ist der Tag an dem scheinbar alle von Google-Hardware reden. Ein Analyst von DisplaySearch behauptet, dass die Produktion eines Google-eigenen Tablets schon im April anlaufen soll und das 7-Zoll Ice Cream Sandwich mit 1280x800 Auflösung als direkter Konkurrent für Amazons Kindle Fire gleich auch noch den selben Preis haben soll. 199 Dollar. Die Xoom-Tablets gehen ja eh in Googles Portfolio über, so abwegig ist das alles gar nicht. Abendrein wird bei Cmet erneut über die Android@Home Strategie gemunkelt. Man vermutet, dass Google Music über Hardware direkt von Google einen notwendigen Schub bekommt. Und ein Tablet wäre da ein nicht zu unterschätzendes Centerpiece im Google-Wohnzimmer.

Clear to-do list app hits 350,000 downloads in nine days

Analyst claims Google's own 7-inch tablet due in April
Google's rumored self-designed tablet got unusual anecdotal support from NPD's DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim. He still saw it as a seven-inch tablet, with a 1280x800 display, but told CNET that he understood production would start in April. As many as 1.5 million to two million would be made, Shim claimed.

iOS passes Android for North American ad impressions
In North America, iOS' share of mobile ad impressions grew a full 12.1 points between October and January, according to mobile advertiser InMobi. Traffic from iOS devices hit 35.3 percent in January, as compared to 32.7 percent for Android, and 11.6 percent for BlackBerry. Android in fact slipped 3.2 points between October and January, allowing iOS to seize leadership.

Microsoft Speed Challenge – Windows Phone gegen Android und iOS
Es ist immer wieder interessant mit anzusehen, was sich Unternehmen alles einfallen lassen, um sich von der Konkurrenz abzusetzen und sich in einem besseren Licht zu präsentieren. Ziemlich bekannt sind unter anderem die “Mac vs. PC”-Videos von Apple in der Vergangenheit. Seit einigen Wochen gibt es auch eine ähnliche Kampagne von Microsoft.
Den Smartphone-Markt dominieren derzeitig eigentlich zwei Firmen mit zwei unterschiedlichen Betriebssystemen. Zum einen wäre das Apple mit seinem iPhone und iOS und zum anderen Samsung mit seinen Android-Modellen. Derzeitig kommt man weder an dem Betriebssystem von Apple noch an dem von Google vorbei. Proview now suing Apple in the US
Proview stepped up its legal assault against Apple by taking its complaint to the US court system. Earlier this month, U.S.-based Proview Technology Inc. filed a suit against Apple in the Superior Court of the State of California in Santa Clara County. The suit claims Apple acted with "oppression, fraud and/or malice" when it bought the iPad trademark from Proview Taiwan. Study: Nokia already king of small Windows Phone kingdom
Nokia already has the largest piece of Windows Phone's small market share, Strategy Analytics found in a study on Friday. It had 33.1 percent of the Microsoft platform's shipments in the fall. While those lucky beta testers managed to get a healthy lump of extra Dropbox storage for their efforts, the mobile app's new auto-upload feature has officially arrived. Readability for iOS to arrive on March 1st
The long-delayed Readability iOS app will finally be available on March 1st, the company has announced. The app is being developed in tandem with Teehan+Lax, and will be a universal title with native iPad and iPhone interfaces. Users will be able to adjust options like brightness, font size, and font type, and share content via Twitter. Flashback.G Trojan uses three-pronged attack on Macs
A new variant of the Flashback Trojan is infecting Macs, says security firm Intego. Dubbed Flashback.G, the malware is reported to use three different methods to try and infect a Mac. The first two involve Java vulnerabilities, which are stopped if a computer's Java installation is up to date. Acer Liquid Glow: Glossy-coated ICS phone to show up at MWC
One phone is never enough. Acer's revealed that it's bringing a second handset to Barcelona next week and it's got that Ice Cream Sandwich we know you love. Apple halts iCloud push services in Germany
Apple was handed a setback in Germany recently when a court ruled in favor of Motorola in a patent infringement case involving Apple's iCloud and MobileMe push email service. A new support document on Apple's German website confirms the company is halting push email for its customers that are inside German borders. The document gives customers instructions on how to setup email to be delivered at regular intervals. The support page notes that iCloud email will resume its push behavior outside Germany, while MobileMe push email will be disabled until further notice. A new face recognition ad will only reveal its full contents to women. It uses a "high-definition" camera to scan people's faces, detecting their gender with an apparent 90 percent success rate. Smartphone-Apps auf Rezept vom Arzt
In Zukunft dürfen Ärzte in Großbritannien ihren Patienten neben Medikamenten auch Apps verschreiben, vorausgesetzt, man besitzt ein Smartphone. Was sich zunächst recht kurios anhört, hat einen ernsten und nützlichen Hintergrund: Die Apps sollen die Ärzte bei ihrer Behandlung unterstützen und den Patienten helfen, mit ihrer Krankheit besser zurechtzukommen.
Auf Anweisung des britischen Gesundheitsministers Andrew Lansley hat das zuständige Ministerium eine Liste von 500 Apps veröffentlicht, über die man abstimmen konnte. Fraunhofer's Full-HD Voice brings high fidelity VoLTE to Android smartphones
The audio nerds at Fraunhofer are set to raise the bar for Voice over LTE next week in Barcelona, as the company has announced a new technology known as Full-HD Voice. By leveraging the AAC-ELD codec, Fraunhofer claims that consumers will experience audio quality that rivals the experience of chatting face-to-face. Technically speaking, it's said the codec offers four times the audio bandwidth of regular phone calls and twice the bandwidth of HD voice services, all without an increase in bit rate. The technology will only be available for Android phones initially, but that seems like a fine place to start

Intel's long-expected Xeon E5 processor may have a narrower launch window. A rumor floated by Digitimes' industry contacts had the E5-2600 series and their matching C600 mainboard chipsets arriving in March. In fact, most of the kids I know would find its story boring. Instead, Desi Leaves Town is an experiment that combines art, literature, and puzzles in a compelling way. Compelling but not perfect. “iPad”-Streit wandert in die USA

Dropbox for Android now auto syncs photos, iOS version soon
Following the release of a beta version of its Dropbox for Android that automatically syncs users photos to their cloud-based Dropbox storage space, Dropbox has now released the app
to the Android Market. Although very similar to the way that Appleís iCloud-based Photostream service, or the equivalent Google+ service works, Dropbox CEO Drew Houston holds the view that neither service is currently in wide use. Battlefield 3: Aftershock – Der Shooter fliegt aus dem App-Store
Laut Electronic Arts möchte man das Feedback der Spieler berücksichtigen und die Qualität von Battlefield 3: Aftershock erhöhen. Daher flog die Shooter-App vorerst aus den Stores.
Erst Anfang des Monats veröffentlichte Publisher Electronic Arts die iOS-Umsetzung zum gleichnamigen Shooter. Das reine Multiplayer-Spiel umfasst dabei nur eine Karte, war aber doch recht rege verkauft worden.
Bereits nach kurzer Zeit hatte die App allerdings schon so schlechte Kritiken ob der Steuerung und diverser Verbindungsprobleme eingefahren, dass sich EA entschloss, Battlefield 3: Aftershock vorerst zur Überarbeitung offline zu nehmen.

iFixit: Weiterer Blick aufs wahrscheinliche iPad-3-Display
Nachdem bereits MacRumors das hochauflösende Display des vermeintlichen iPad 3 unters Mikroskop gelegt hatte, hat sich nun auch iFixit das Display einmal näher angesehen.

Motorola lawsuit forces Apple to drop push e-mail in Germany
Apple has failed in its legal bid to stop Motorola from forcing an injunction against its implementation of push email in Germany. Consequently, Apple has pulled the function from its iCloud and MobileMe services. The Cupertino-based company has posted a statement on the matter, which now leaves German iOS users having to force e-mail updates by opening their mail application or setting their e-mail client to check periodically for new e-mail.

iFixit hat das Retina Display des iPad unter die Lupe genommen

Apple Patent weist auf DJ-Qualitäten kommender iTunes Versionen hin

Das musste ja irgendwann kommen. Genius war nicht das Ende, weil es einfach nur eine Playliste zusammenstellt mit irgendwie zueinander passenden Stücken. Jetzt ist ein Apple Patent aufgetaucht, das die Beats der Stücke matchen will und mittels Crossfader einen Mix versucht, der dem eines DJs nahekommen soll. Wäre dann wirklich nicht die erste Software die so etwas angeht. Wir sind dennoch gespannt was am Ende dabei rauskommt, nur um dann schnell wieder zu unserem Lieblings-DJ-Set von gestern zu wechseln.

A new iPhone application that lets users post news of local events and discoveries along with reviews or comments called Echoer has launched in the Canadian iOS App Store ahead of a worldwide rollout. Rumor: Mozilla, LG to team up on Boot2Gecko mobile phone
Mozilla, which will be launching its own open-source app storefront in the forthcoming Firefox 13, may use this weekend's Mobile World Congress to launch a smartphone made by LG that runs its own mobile OS, known as Boot2Gecko. Amsterdam Apple Store gets date; Germany gets labor councils
Apple has set an official date for the opening of the Amsterdam Apple Store. The location is scheduled to open Saturday, March 3rd at 10AM, situated in the Hirsch Building at Leidseplein 25. Regular hours will run from 9AM to 9PM Monday through Wednesday, 9AM to 10PM Thursday through Saturday, and 11AM to 7PM on Sunday. The shop will be Apple's first in the Netherlands, based in the same building as regional operating offices.

California forges agreements with tech firms on app privacy
California's Office of the Attorney General has secured agreements from several major corporations on improving privacy in mobile apps, according to a spokesman. Under the terms of the arrangement the companies will ask developers to include privacy policies for apps, informing users before a download what an app will access, as well as what will be done with the data. UK based firm Wapple says it has won a lengthy trademark dispute with Apple, thanks to a new UK Intellectual Property Office ruling allowing it to retain its trademark. HP net profit drops 44%, CEO hints at fewer products
HP reported results for its quarter ended January that reflected a bruising in the PC business regardless of category. Its net earnings dropped 44 percent to $1.5 billion following a seven-point loss in revenue to exactly $30 billion after the core Personal Systems Group saw its revenue down 15 percent versus a year ago; the enterprise server group dipped 10 percent. The PSG's losses were mostly pinned on home users, as mainstream PCs made 25 percent less revenue while pro workstations were flat.

AMD said to have fluffed shot at Llano chips in MacBook Air
A potentially major rumor has asserted that Apple was at one point investingating using AMD's Llano architecture mobile processors in the MacBook Air. A patent holding company that fits the description of a patent troll has filed a lawsuit against Apple's iPhone and iPad, claiming that the company's implementation of voicemail violates two "multimedia voicemail" patents that originally belonged to a Florida modem maker called Paradyne, GigaOM reports. A flaw demonstrated in a YouTube video (seen below) demonstrates a difficult-to-access but reproducible bug in iOS 5.0.1 that can allow unauthorized users to bypass a lock screen on GSM-based iPhones and access recent contacts, make calls or even use FaceTime, iPhoneIslam reports. Proview denied ban on iPad in Shanghai
Proview suffered a major setback in its attempt to extract a settlement from Apple on Thursday after reports that it was denied a ban in the Shanghai Pudong New Area People's Court. T-Mobile gets LTE in 2013, says iPhone 4S cost 700K users
T-Mobile in reporting its fall quarter's results revealed that it would join other major US carriers in adopting LTE. The breakup fees and spectrum transfers from AT&T's abandoned takeover deal gave it the resources to add the faster network in "key US markets." With iPad included, Apple tops 2011 mobile PC sales
Apple was the lead mobile PC vendor in the fourth quarter of 2011 and the rest of the year, at least when including tablets, an NPD DisplaySearch report shows. The company shipped just under 23.4 million MacBooks and iPads in the fourth quarter, and more than 62.8 million for the entire year. Canalys: Android apps typically more expensive than iOS
Paid Android apps are on average over two and a half times as expensive as iPhone apps, says research group Canalys. As a test case, the company notes that buying the top 100 paid titles on the Android Market currently costs $374.37, averaging out to $3.74 per app. Buying the top 100 paid iPhone apps costs just $147, at an average of $1.47 per title.

TI shows dual ARM Cortex-A15 chip blowing past quad Tegra 3
TI has posted a demo video (below) of its OMAP5 processor in what could be a sign of how fast many next-generation processors will be next to even chips that have yet to arrive. Even clocked at just 800MHz with only two main cores, the use of ARM's new Cortex-A15 was able to run a web browser, MP3 playback, and downloading multitasking test more than twice as quickly as a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor. While the A9 wasn't named, it was likely NVIDIA's 1.3GHz Tegra 3, showing how little clock speed mattered.

Chinese writers double damage demands in App Store lawsuit
A group of nine Chinese writers have amended a December court filing against Apple to almost double the amount of damages sought, according to Macworld. Having previously sought 11.9 million yuan in their App Store piracy case, the group -- operating as the China Written Works Copyright Society -- is now asking for 23 million yuan, or about $3.65 million. OmniVision suddenly upbeat about mobile camera outlook
OmniVision might have given hints as to plans for one or more mobile companies after a rebound in the winter. Its revenue was down to $185.2 million from $265.7 million a year earlier, but it had unexpectedly beaten outside targets that were nearly $10 million lower. Expectations for the spring were considerably higher than both what it achieved in the winter and what analysts were expecting, with a target of between $195 million to $215 million instead of a previously predicted decline.

Apple acquires Chomp mobile app search engine
Apple has bought both the team and technology behind Chomp, a mobile app search engine that could find apps for users based on vague descriptions of what the apps actually do rather than by title or publisher, TechCrunch is reporting. Some of the 20-plus Chomp employees are already showing on LinkedIn as Apple employees, and the technology may be used as part of a rumored App Store redesign to help focus app searches.

Apple patent reveals possible keyboard redesigns
A patent awarded to Apple earlier today signals that the company is investigating methods to make keyboards even thinner and lighter than they are today without affecting performance, AppleInsider reports. The basic idea is to abandon the "scissors" or "dome" support approach keys currently use in favor of a "rigid support lever" that would reduce travel to as little as 0.2mm (eight one-thousandths of an inch).

Proview sues Apple in US, accuses it of fraud over iPad name
Proview is now known to have quietly sued Apple in the US last week over the iPad trademark dispute. It claimed in a Santa Clara court that Apple's decision to use a shell company, IP Application Development Limited (IPADL), was allegedly fraudulent. By masking its own involvement, Apple was trying to "defraud and induce" Proview into signing a trademark handover deal that it might not otherwise have agreed to, according to the lawsuit.

TiVo to offer four-stream transcoder boxes by late summer
TiVo, which just announced better-than-expected earnings earlier today, has also announced a forthcoming model that offers "four-stream transcoding" and the ability to send those streams over the internet to up to four devices, both for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets for either pre-recorded material or live TV. The future product, modelled after last year's TiVo Preview, may also offer Netflix and other online video services.

Apple may be ready to commit to smaller iOS dock connector
Apple's possible plans to rework the dock connector for iOs devices might be edging closer to reality. A rumor relayed to iMore had Apple "getting ready" to switch to a smaller port. GlobalFoundries acquires troubled DRAM chip maker
Industry sources are reporting that former AMD manufacturing arm GlobalFoundries has agree to buy out ProMOS Technologies, a troubled RAM and chip manufacturer with facilities in Taichung, Taiwan. The move should help GlobalFoundries extend its influence with Chinese IC designers and other global companies that rely on integrated circuits but lack fabrication facilities of their own, DigiTimes reports.

FCC thinks ISPs should do a better job preventing fraud, theft
Internet fraud and theft are major problems, there seems to be little doubt about that -- according to FCC chairman Julius Genachowski, some 8.4 million credit card numbers are stolen every year. The question, then, is who should be addressing the issue. Robot navigates, reassembles truss structures
Sick and tired of your boring old truss? This handy little robot may well be just the solution you're looking for. It can navigate a truss structure using its 3D-printed bi-directional gear innards, unscrew a beam with its rotational mechanism and reattach it, transforming the structure into a new shape. The structure itself is specially designed for the bot, with robot lockable connectors and reflecting segments that can be picked up by its sensors to help it detect its location. Tidbits from Apple's shareholders meeting
CNBC was at the Apple shareholders annual meeting that took place February 23 in Cupertino, and you can read through detailed notes of the summit on its site. There were only a few official matters to discuss, and the first was whether or not the company would adopt majority voting for its board of directors, requiring a majority vote for each director to stay. Shareholders decided to approve the measure, meaning board members would have to resign without a voting majority, but that ruling didn't matter much; all of the directors were elected with over 80 percent of the vote anyway. Hack enables fast refresh mode on Nook Simple Touch (video)
As anyone who's used an e-reader knows, page refreshes aren't the most elegant feature of E Ink. Apple tops 2011 mobile PC sales if iPad is included
According to an NPD DisplaySearch report, Apple was the top mobile PC vendor for the fourth quarter of 2011 and the rest of the year -- if you consider iPads to be mobile PCs. T-Mobile blames lack of iPhone for deactivations
T-Mobile announced its quarterly earnings on Thursday and in its Q4 2011 financial statement, the carrier used the word iPhone seven times. In T-Mobile's case, the iPhone wasn't the bearer of good news, but the scapegoat for the carrier's less-than-stellar performance this quarter. T-Mobile now has 33.2 million customers, down from the 33.7 million in the previous quarter. It lost 526,000 net customers in the last three months of 2011 and its churn rate climbed to 4.0 percent. iFixit examines alleged iPad 3 display, confirms doubled resolution

TiVo releases Q4 results, announces transcoder and IP set-top box on the way

Android apps more expensive on average than iPhone counterparts
As an unabashed iPhone fan, I often ask owners of Android smartphones why they chose their phone over an iPhone. Answers have included "I like larger screens and styluses" (from a Samsung Galaxy Note owner), "There are more choices," and the ever-popular "iPhone apps are so expensive!"
