ITC closes the book on HTC's first complaint against Apple, still working on its sequels

iPad 3 display inspection backs 2048x1536 resolution
A rare, direct hands-on with what's believed to be a leaked iPad 3 display may have confirmed its 2048x1536 resolution. The MacRumors investigation went beyond surface checks to show that the pixel density was exactly four times higher than on the iPad 2 while keeping the 9.7-inch size. As expected, the display couldn't be powered up to show the effect, although at 264 pixels per inch it could appear near-seamless.

Congress passes bill opening up TV spectrum to next-gen WiFi networks
It may seem a bit odd to see tech industry groups like the CTIA and CEA praising the passage of the Temporary Payroll Tax Cut Continuation Act of 2011 by Congress, but that rather mundane-sounding bill has provisions attached to it that both groups and others have been pushing for years to happen. In an effort to cover the cost of the payroll tax extension, the bill also sets aside a large block of so-called unlicensed spectrum for auction, which is expected to bring in upwards of $25 billion. That spectrum had previously been used for TV broadcast use, but is now being eyed by various parties for next-generation WiFi networks, which could cover greater distances and potentially be used to bolster existing wireless networks. Foxconn raises Chinese worker wages
Foxconn has been back in the news lately for an investigation, commenced by Apple's request, into its worker practices. Perhaps influenced by those actions (though perhaps not), Foxconn has raised some of its pay levels by 16 to 25 percent. Depending on the worker and the results of some testing, junior level workers could pick up as much as 2200 yuan, which translates to about $350 US, a month. That's still only about $4200 a year, but it's more than the minimum wage in China, and most factory workers are also given room, board, and training by the company, so there are other expenses that are already taken care of. Windows Mobile takes up roost in Windows Phone, thanks to WML project (video)
Whether you're looking for a good laugh or a simple trip down memory lane, seeing Windows Mobile 6.1 hobble around like a grumpy old man within Windows Phone might just satisfy both those urges. Countdown zu 25 Milliarden App Store Downloads gestartet
Aktuell fehlen noch etwa 700 Millionen Downloads, doch der Zähler rast und rast auf die 25 Milliarden zu. Apple's Mountain Lion vs. a real mountain lion
Jeff Somogyi of dealmac has posted an amusing comparison between Apple's upcoming OS X Mountain Lion and a real mountain lion. It turns out the differences between them are not so subtle. BlackBerry Playbook OS 2.0 release confirmed for February 21st
There's been plenty of back and forth between the web and RIM lately regarding the debut date of the next OS release for the PlayBook, and now we've got some hard evidence showing that the software is set to be let loose on February 21st . Musicality: AirPlay popular music services to enabled speakers
Musicality (US$9.99) offers one-app access to Pandora, Last.fm, and Grooveshark streaming music services. What's more, it adds in extra features that integrate with Growl notifications (so you can immediately see what song is playing, even when the app itself is hidden) and AirPlay. Study claims iPad helps rise in literacy for kindergarteners
A study conducted in Auburn, Maine suggests that the iPad may be able to improve literacy rates among kindergarten students, notes The Loop. The Auburn School Department recently assigned iPads to half of the district's 16 kindergarten classes for a period of nine weeks. This translated into 129 students being taught with iPads, and 137 without; to gauge results, all of the students were tested before and after the trial.

Daily iPhone App: Streetquiz helps you learn your local roads
Streetquiz is part game, part navigation app that drills you about your local streets. The app uses your cellular connection and GPS position to pull down new questions about the streets on which you are walking or driving. It's meant to be a fun way to learn the roads in your neighborhood or town. The app launches with a session that lasts for ten questions. Each question asks you to identify your street and gives you a few choices from which to select. The game tracks the number you answer correctly and calculates your score based on these ten questions.One limitation with the game is that you only get one question per street. After I answered the question, I had to wait until I arrived at the next street to get another question.

Chitika: Windows' web share has dropped 10% in half a year
Chitika highlighted what it saw as a possible tidal shift in the computing industry based on its web tracking. Windows' share of the web dropped by 10 percent of its relative value in the past six months, down from 78.3 percent in August to 71.4 percent in February. An unusually sharp drop came in January, where it lost 4.2 percent of relative (3.2 percent absolute) share in a matter of weeks.

Google explains how and why Safari privacy settings were circumvented
In response to a Wall Street Journal report claiming that Google bypassed Safari privacy settings to track ads on both Apple computers and iOS devices, the company released a statement today from Rachel Whetstone, SVP of Communications and Public Policy. Following yesterday's Mountain Lion announcement, Firemint has detailed its plan to incorporate some of the operating system's new features into Real Racing 2. Game Center integration will add achievements, leaderboards, and friend invites for online play, while AirPlay support will allow users to easily play the game on external displays. Apple counts down to 25 billion App Store downloads
More than 24 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store, and Apple has rolled out a giveaway for whoever is lucky enough to claim the 25th billion download. CM9 for TouchPad gains access to nightly builds
Happy tidings for TouchPad owners looking for the latest Android 4.0 action: the Alpha 6 build of CM9 can now tune into nightly broadcasts of fixes and updates, courtesy of Teamwin and Eyeballer. This is an unofficial development branch and users have so far seen mixed results, but the main CyanogenMod crew seems content enough to recommend it -- at least until a new Alpha or Beta build comes along with major improvements like video playback or camera support. Messages may become Mountain Lion-only after beta
The Messages app introduced alongside OS X Mountain Lion will become exclusive to the new OS after the current beta period has finished, French site Consomac says it has learned. Buried in text strings for the app is a future alert for users of the Lion-based beta. "Thank you for participating in the Messages Beta program. Apple TV disappearing from store shelves; update imminent?
There's been a lot of speculation about an Apple HDTV of some kind, but it's much more likely that an improved Apple TV will make it to market before we see a large flat screen device. Angry Birds Space announced for March 22nd release, NASA and National Geographic lending a hand
Angry Birds has spawned countless ports and two sorta sequels, but Rovio has now announced what it's describing as its biggest launch since the original game. Angry Birds Space will be released on March 22nd, and the company has enlisted NASA and National Geographic as launch partners for the game (exactly what that entails is still unclear, though). As you can probably guess, the hook this time around will be some new physics to deal with, including zero gravity and a new "lightspeed destruction" feature, but details on the game itself otherwise remain a bit light, including any specific word on supported platforms. Proview stands by claims; Apple payout could hit $2B
Proview is holding to the position that it retains the iPad trademark in China, the company has announced at a Friday press event. "If we are not compensated properly, then Apple doesn't use the iPad trademark in mainland China," states Yang Rongshan, chairman of Proview Shenzhen, and the main shareholder in Proview International. A representative for Proview creditors in fact suggests that Apple could end up paying as much as $2 billion in compensation, even though Proview has previously only sought up to $1.6 billion in its lawsuit.

Foxconn hebt die Löhne um 16-25%
Halb China jubelt. Bei Foxconn gibt es jetzt für die Arbeiter mehr Geld. Die Löhne werden wohl ab diesem Monat um 16-25 Prozent angehoben. Man vermutet es ist eine Reaktion darauf, dass seit dem 14. Februar von Apple angeleierte Überraschungsinspektionen durch die Fair Labor Association durchgeführt werden. Der Einstiegslohn beträgt nun 1.800 Yuan und man kann sich auf 2.200 Yuan hocharbeiten. LED maker possibly tapped for Apple TV set's Sharp panel
Apple's much-rumored TV set might have had one of its first non-obvious part suppliers named through new tips. Contacts claimed to Digitimes that Genesis Photonics was expected to supply the LED backlighting circuitry for a Sharp-made panel. The Japanese company is believed to have switched some of its ordering from local firm Nichia to Taiwan's Genesis as far back as the first half of 2011, making Genesis' contribution to Apple more likely.

Um Siri auf einem älteren iOS-Gerät mit den Apple-Servern kommunizieren lassen zu können, benötigen wir grob gesagt einen Zugangsschlüssel eines iPhone 4S. Jedes iPhone 4S besitzt einen uniquen bzw. einzigartigen Zugangsschlüssel für die Siri-Server. Ohne diesen Schlüssel gibt es keinen Datenaustausch mit den Siri-Servern. Möchte man also ein älteres iOS-Device mit einem funktionstüchtigen Siri-Assistenten nachrüsten, benötigt man einen Schlüssel eines iPhone 4S.
Seinen persönlichen iPhone 4S-Zugangsschlüssel sollte man nicht frei zugänglich im Web bereitstellen, da die Gefahr besteht, dass Apple den Schlüssel sperrt wenn überdurchschnittlich viele Zugriffe erkannt werden. The new Messages beta gives us a peek at one iOS-like feature that'll land in OS X Mountain Lion when it arrives later this year. It also hints that Apple may be planning to refresh its Mac line with high-resolution, retina-like displays. MacRumors dug through the Messages app resources and discovered that some graphics within the app are available in both regular and double resolutions. Huawei was cycling past the FCC's ominous Washington bunker and dropped off a basket of muffins and its latest phone. NPD: 40% of iPad homes make over $100,000 a year
iPad owners are increasingly more likely to be wealthier and older than their counterparts, the NPD Group uncovered on Friday. China: Foxconn hebt Löhne um bis zu 25 Prozent

Apple wins injunction against several of Motorola's slide-to-unlock implementations in Germany
A German Court handed Apple a significant victory over Motorola this week. The Munich I Regional Court ruled that Motorola's handsets infringe on Apple's slide-to-unlock image patent. The patent describes a method of "unlocking a device by performing gestures on an unlock image." FCC rules VoIP providers must report outages in effort to improve 911 service
The FCC has many important things under its jurisdiction, and ensuring a functional 911 service is among the most critical. Foxconn raises pay up to 25% to mitigate concerns
Foxconn on Friday significantly raised pay for its floor workers in China for the third time in about one and a half years. An entry-level factory worker in Foxconn's main facilities at Shenzhen would now get between 16 to 25 percent more pay per month depending on whether or not the person passed a technical test. Boot2Gecko: Mehr Einblicke in Mozillas Antwort auf Android

The Wall Street Journal reports that Google has been bypassing privacy settings in Safari intended to block websites from tracking user activity across the Internet. Stanford researcher Jonathan Mayer discovered that Google had been implementing code that bypasses Safari's user-determined privacy settings, and the Journal's own researcher independently confirmed Mayer's findings. Mountain Lion's Gatekeeper adds additional security options to OS X
With the many updates and new features announced for the upcoming OS X release of Mountain Lion, one may have slipped by, but it's an important feature. It's also likely to become controversial. Mountain Lion may drop support for older Intel Macs
Appleís surprise announcement that its next update to OS X dubbed Mountain Lion will come as soon as this summer, has also yielded an additional surprise. As with the recent shift to OS X Lion, Apple will cut off users of older Macs from its next-generation OS -- for Lion, IBM PowerPC-based Macs missed out. Natürlich hat Google dieses Patent, das Patentlyapple.com ausgegraben hat, nicht erst gestern angemeldet, aber es dürfte auch kein Zufall sein, dass es jetzt auftaucht. Falls die Slide-To-Unlock-Funktion von diversen Android Smartphones verschwinden muss, gib es zumindest mal konzeptionell - neben der Gesichtserkennung und der Eingabe einer Schlidder-Figur - ein nächstes Trivialpatent, dass das Entsichern von Android auch in den kommenden Jahren sichert. iOS 5.1: Bilder eines neuen Vorab-Builds
Die portugiesische Website blogdoiPhone zeigt die Bilder des Beta-Builds, der von einem Mobilfunkbetreiber stammen soll.
Zum einen scheint Apple den “Kamera”-Knopf im “Verriegelt”-Zustand des iOS verändert zu haben: Bisher ließ sich die Kamera durch ein zweimaliges Drücken der Home-Taste einfach per Antippen aufrufen. Das konnte so auch unerwünscht in der Hosentasche passieren – wenn es auch recht unwahrscheinlich ist. Als weiteren “Schutzmechanismus” zeigt ein Screenshot ein Bild, in dem sich die Kamera nicht durch Antippen, sondern Fingerwisch aktivieren lässt.

Google in a report Thursday night was accused of circumventing the cookie privacy settings in Apple's desktop and mobile versions of Safari. Apple veröffentlicht Entwicklerversion Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
Apple hat nun ein wenig überraschend die Developer-Version des neuen Betriebssystems Mac OS X 10.8 veröffentlicht. Mit der Version mit dem Codenamen Mountain Lion finden zahlreiche vom mobilen Betriebssystem iOS bekannte Anwendungen ihren Weg auf den Mac-Computer. Neben dem Notification-Center und dem Game Center ist mit der neuen Version auch Messages und Airplay-Mirroring auf dem Mac verfügbar.Die Software Messages ersetzt dabei das altbekannte und ein wenig eingerostete iChat. Mit dem Programm kann man wie vom iOS-Device gewohnt, kostenlos Nachrichten, Fotos oder Videos an einen anderen Mac- oder iOS-Nutzer versenden. Google now known to be patenting own phone unlock techniques
Google is now known to have been actively seeking patents on unlock techniques that would help avoid the legal clashes with Apple that have hurt Motorola and others. The patent filing for an "Input to Locked Computing Device" includes multiple possible techniques to get access to an Android phone. One of the core techniques would be a reverse of the ring unlock technique in HTC's Sense 3.0: users would drag an app icon to a screen area that then launches the app.

Doodle Defense game uses Kinect to turn white boards into displays, dry-erase markers into weapons
Tower defense games have been done in damn near every way possible: on consoles, mobile apps, and online flash-based games. However, there's a new Kickstarter project, called Doodle Defense, that's putting a new spin on that simple gaming idea using some open source algorithms, a whiteboard, computer, Kinect and a projector. The game works by projecting the battlefield and bad guys on the whiteboard, while users can draw in obstacles using a black marker and towers of varied attack abilities in red, green, and blue. Kraftwerk performing 3D-enhanced retrospective concerts over 8 nights at MoMA
New York City isn't Europe and eight straight nights isn't exactly endless (though, it's plenty long if you're talking about lamp oil), but this humble metropolis is good enough for electronic and Krautrock pioneers Kraftwerk. XCode repackaged for MAS, updated to version 4.3
In a further move to support use of the Mac App Store for developers, the company has issued a new version of XCode as a free Mac App Store standalone application. The new version, 4.3, is for Lion developers and not the same as the v4.4 that was released earlier today with the developer preview of Mountain Lion. The new version replaces the previous XCode and adds support for delta updates among other changes.

Evidence of Proview transfer of iPad trademark emerges
Documents obtained by AllThingsD appear to show conclusively that Apple did indeed buy worldwide rights to the trademark name "iPad" in 10 different countries from Proview prior to the introduction of the tablet, and not from a "subsidiary that didn't own the name" as Proview has been claiming. The documents, part of a court case Apple won in a Hong Kong court, strongly support Apple's version of events.

Coverage? for iOS tells when you can and can't get on the cellular network
Coverage? is an iOS app that tells you where to expect coverage from all the major US carriers. The maps are based on coverage maps from the cell companies, but they are interpreted, updated, and quite a bit more useful. You can see all major US carriers, and overlay them. I initially looked at Coverage? in 2010 when the iPhone was only on AT&T. At the time, I found the comparisons a bit depressing. The Verizon coverage was pervasive, and the AT&T coverage was pretty sparse outside the big cities. Clearwire expects TD-LTE by June 2013
Clearwire chief Erik Prusch in comments during his company's fiscal results call Thursday set a timeframe for its move to LTE for 4G. He expected an initial round of 5,000 sites to switch on by June 2013. The currently WiMAX-only provider is planning to use TD-LTE on top of WiMAX and will focus mostly on heavy population areas where data use is most likely.

BBC 3D London Olympics plans include one live sporting event, daily highlights
The Beeb has finally detailed its plans for 3D broadcasts during the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer, and unfortunately for fans of the technology, the content available for live viewing will be pretty limited. The BBC's site lists the Opening / Closing ceremonies and the men's 100m dash for its experimental coverage and that's it. iOS 5.1 may tote always-ready camera button on lock screen
A finding Thursday in a late and possibly Apple-only build of iOS 5.1 has hinted that Apple may have addressed a common complaint about camera access. The pre-GM (gold master) version seen by Brazil's Blog do iPhone would have the camera button always available on the lock screen just require a swipe up to start shooting. Apple's current approach only shows the camera after double-tapping the home button, leading some to miss the camera shortcut entirely.

Every version of OS X has featured a standalone application called Software Update that delivers updates to Apple's operating system, applications, and hardware drivers. FTC wants Android, iOS devs to disclose child-related data
The FTC in a set of recommendations Thursday called on Android and iOS developers alike to provide more information to adults about what information an app might collect about their kids. Officials wanted simple, direct information to help parents either filter access or avoid apps entirely.
